Confusion surrounds a Football League deadline which was issued to the Sky Blues. Coventry City Football Club had been given until the end of this month to pay Ricoh Arena operators ACL £590,000 towards its unpaid rent bill. The deadline was issued after the club went into administration last year, following a lengthy dispute with stadium bosses. The payment was a condition of the membership agreement which allows the club to continue to compete in the Football League. All signs indicated the football club would not meet that May 31 date after ACL yesterday confirmed no payment had been received from the football club. www.coventrytelegraph.net/news/coventry-news/confusion-over-football-league-deadline-7195827

Looks like the FL have got a lot to do very quickly. Wonder what would happen if the league decided to kick them out as the conference AGM was this weekend?

How excited are Tranmere fans getting about this? I can't seem to access the Cowsheds forum.

nah! Coventry and Wycombe for the conference! Torquay and us safe, then we get fined / kicked out the league over pitch invasions and Gateshead take our place. (all said tongue in cheek).

I don't think there will be any alterations to the Football League. There may be alterations among Conference existing members (Hereford and Macclesfield in a spot of bother). There are rumours that a couple of clubs in Conference South and North may be asked for financial bonds before being admitted but these are rumours and I have seen nothing official on any of this.

I bet the FL and Conference bosses are rubbing their heads at the moment. What saddens me though is the history that is going down the drain.

I doubt the Conference are rubbing their hands. For obvious reasons they like ex Football League in their division but they are very strict on finances and although FFP does not operate in the league in some ways I think they are probably tougher. This season, for example, they will inspect some club books without warning. And, in fairness, if Hereford are in deep trouble and cannot complete their fixtures or pay the players etc that is not a healthy situation for any League or for the other clubs in the league.

Not even sure we've applied to join the Conference yet, the silence coming from our board is deafening, they are certainly in 'a league of their own' and if they don't pull their fingers out soon that's where we'll probably find ourselves

If a team drops out of the football league, they will have to be replaced.
Question is, does the league table move up through the whole football pyramid or do they look at the best placed relegated teams to fill the positions (Tranmere and errrr us...)
I vote the second option...

Say Coventry dropped out the FL could run Division One with one less team next season.

I think it would be far fairer to everyone if they reprieved the 71st-worst Football League club than promoted the third-best Conference side to fill a gap in the Football League. Not that is or will be a gap, though

No need, we'd valiantly fill the breach if required!

Should we call off the friendly now? don't want to be playing a team in the same league as us, mind you if we get reinstated......

The football league needs all the places filled. Even if one team drops out, the funds that are generated from one club (especially in league one) is still huge. Why would the football league want to miss out on £££'s that could be generated with the addition of another club at Coventry's expense???
