DC got it wrong, obvs, but it wasn't a tactical error, it was an error in assuming players could do a job and then they didn't.
That of course is down to the players involved (who got subbed) but I think the worry with the DC's "squad theory" is that some players are form players. Easter is the example for me: he needs a run in the team to sharpen his touch (and get the confidence to shoot), but maybe his legs aren't up to it. I don't know.
But, on the whole I'm more than happy with the way DC is doing his job and he has more than enough credit in the bank to cover getting it wrong occasionally.
Ellis not trying or playing for the shirt: wow, I thought we got past all this BS. Yes he had a bad game, yes I would rather see Gaffney at the mo, but the idea Ellis isnt trying or doesn't repect the shirt: rubbish.

I dont think you can say their isnt a player doesnt try in the squad. If there was, i dont think DC would give them numerous chances. Ellis was frustrating. Needs to be stronger. He actually did some good things in the first half, but the bad was pretty bad and easy to forget what he did/can do. Gaffney would start for me if fit. Woyld be interesting to see what sort of partnership Gaffney and Ellis would be if Ellis was the 'main man' and not the target man

I think DC has a good squad and does try and keep them happy by making changes, older players are obviously not part of his long term plan though; you would have thought Mans should have at least made the bench this season. Ellis must be a different player on the training pitch. I want him to succeed but his performances IMO do not warren this continued inclusion!

Mrbluesky, I HATED the John Ward style of management and I am sorry if you don't think Professional footballers are fit enough to play one game with ten players,120 minutes of a cup tie and another League match within 1 week? Hardly a fixture pile up. Boateng was far more effective qualitywise than the other midfielders and I think you will find that a large percentage of fans would have disagreed totally with the side selected today. Lines, Gaffney and Taylor were three of our most influential players on Tuesday and Montano was dangerous and none played and yet I bet you will find that 90% of teams in this division play the same team every week or very few changes. It's not that professional footballers are not fit enough to do that, it is that they are likely to be up against professional footballers who wouldn't have had to do that which risks a disadvantage. Most professional players could probably physically get through a game quite easily carrying several injuries - that doesn't mean it makes sense to do that. Clarke is very clear that he plays a squad game and he values fitness very highly. The game is also going in that direction - I think it's very unlikely that 90% of teams in this division have stable teams week in-week out as they did even 10 years ago. They won't always get the balance right but I think the squad rotation approach is one reason why we score so many late goals and it's also a reason why I would expect us to have a good last 2/3 months of the season as we have the last 2 years. Our players are not knackered and carrying loads of injuries through games.
