Taking six weeks 'off-season' to weigh up the biggest decision of your entire career is wholly acceptable, in my opinion. Nobody has handled anything badly.

I totally agree with the 'take six weeks to consider' approach, just raise an eyebrow slightly that he took ten. I'll proceed on the basis that all will be good, though.

There may have been more to it than that.

Great news, sure he will have a good season and somebody will have to pay a proper fee for his services, sometime in the future, nearer or longer, thanks Matty for the loyalty, even with a bargained contract, which was deserved. What will continue to bother me is why he didn't do this earlier. It sounds like Poxford had expected to have him sign and he then turned them down. He could have signed earlier, like Sir Rickie, knowing he would go and then at least knowing we would benefit from it. Dont get me wrong, happy he signed but it raises more questions for me anyway. I suspect he overplayed his hand and may look to produce the good and go in January. His statement seems to indicate that in saying that he could walk away with his head held high. Both Rovers and Oxford expected him to sign for Oxford a couple of weeks ago,it was apparently a done deal, what changed I do not know but it did

BRISTOL Rovers boss Darrell Clarke admits it would have been hard to replace 28-goal striker Matty Taylor if he had decided to pursue his career away from the Memorial Stadium.
Taylor returned to training with his team-mates on Monday morning for the first time since snubbing a whole of host of Championship clubs to commit his immediate future to Rovers by penning a new long-term deal.
Clarke was pleased that the summer-long "saga" was at an end and that the in-demand striker had decided to throw his lot in with Rovers for the long term.
"He scored 28 times last season and he was involved in at least 45 per cent of those scored by others," said Clarke. "That is a lot of goals and assists to replace and I am really delighted we have managed to retain him
"I haven't been sat at home watching the soaps all summer so there was a contingency plan, of course. There were different options and scenarios if we needed to go down that route as there are hundreds of players available.
"But it was always my preferred option to retain the majority of the squad that won promotion last season and Matty was a key part of that. I didn't think we would keep him, but Matty is a deep thinker and he took a lot of time to make sure he made the right decision for his career.
"When Matty first signed for us after leaving Forest Green Rovers he had better offers on the table than the one we made him. He signed for us at that time because he believed in the project and believed in what I wanted to do here and that we are continuing to move in the right direction is what has kept him at the football club."
The striker will be carrying a heavy burden of expectation on his shoulders to replicate his goal scoring exploits of the last two seasons when stepping up to League One for the first time.
"Matty will be judged on his goals but I know what he gives me both on and off the ball," said Clarke. "I am happy with what I have seen from him in that regard since he has been here and I don't anticipate anything different during the coming season.
"There are questions about everyone all of the time these days. I remember a lot of supporters wanted rid of him when he took some time to get off the mark during the Conference season. Then people wondered whether he would be able to maintain that sort of form in League Two. He answered those questions last season, but now the same questions will be asked of him again.
"Everyone has an opinion on the players or the manager at all clubs and they are able to voice it every minute of every day if they want to. The platform is there through social media for supporters to do that if they want. That side of things is very much part of our professional lives now and we have to accept that and get on with it."
Taylor is expected to feature for Rovers when they host Aston Villa in a pre-season friendly at the Memorial Stadium on Wednesday night (7.45pm).

After all Oxford United are at the same level as ourselves, so where was the step-up that was being talked about. Or was it all just newspaper talk do you think?

They have reported that he returned to training for the first time today ''since snubbing a whole of host of Championship clubs.'' This could well have been Matty Taylor's agent up until recently, when he ran out of credit on his Pay-As-You-Go mobile . . .

I was Gary Smarts neighbour for 5 years and the Rovers players who came to the many parties ended up in some states. It really is a whole new ball game now. The state of MS was the stuff of legends lol.

He seems almost sheepish here or is it just me ? I've watched at least 15 interviews of Matty over the last 2 seasons, some on YouTube and some on Gas player. He doesn't come across any different than usual, it's like most players when put in front of cameras and microphones, they become shy and awkward. Our lads could learn alot from Mildy & Mansell, 2 of the best talkers I've seen in a long time.

I don't mind at all if players are rubbish interviewees. Very few footballers are especially interesting to listen to. As far as I'm concerned Taylor owed us nothing out of contract. I very surprised and glad we were able to sign him again. I hope he can leave us only for a higher division as a gas hero. For a transfer fee. Hopefully not too soon. Let's see what we can do in the third division.

It helps if the interviewer asks sensible and interesting questions. Who was the interviewer - one of the normally sound Radio Bristol stalwarts - Richard Hoskin or Ed Hadwin? I thought the questioning in this case was inane.
What was the point of asking "[compared to the Conference], will it be exciting to test yourself against better teams?". What's MT meant to say? "No?"
And what was the media man's intention in asking the question "have you been practising one-on-one's"? Matty seemed to interpret that as "have you been training on your own / with a personal trainer?" (to which the answer is "yes", we hear), rather than "have you been trying to improve your ability to finish chances when through with only the goalkeeper to beat" (which would have been a bit cheeky).
The interviewer also seemed to be in a massive hurry, firing out lengthy, closed, questions in double-quick time. Matty wasn't for rushing though, and kept his cool. He gave adequate answers to rather poor questions, I thought.
Underlying the interview was the fact that Matty had taken time to consider other offers. That's a sensitive matter, which the interviewer - probably wisely, at the training ground - chose not to probe. Maybe that's the reason for the slightly underwhelming nature of the clip.
