I live in Torquay and have asked two ST holders of Plymouth what they think of Hartley and both responses were slow, ponderous but scores a few goals!! Nelson and Carey will both play a higher standard of football one would think. Hopefully in a blue and white shirt. Steve Elliot was never the quickest, but he was a good player. No he wasn't, he was f***ing brilliant.

Re nelson - sadly he was named in the Lge 2 Team of the Season, which is basically a great advert (but a lazy way...) for higher clubs to snaffle the best players in lower divisions. Just like being named in the England C squad was, and so on. Happens all the time. The secret of great football transfers is finding these players before they get wide recognition.

The sad bit about this, is that some truly great players never get picked up. Here I am at 51 years old , still waiting for the call

Also hoping dc is saving some of our budget, in case Taylor does not sign. Goalscorers cost a lot, even if they are out of contract like Taylor.

I would have preferred to have signed Nelson, however, he is quick but not that good in the air. Lockyer and Hartley would be a better pairing. One good in the air and more experienced and one young and quick. Lockyer and Nelson together would struggle against a tall physical striker. Dc can get the best out of players. Willing to give him a try. Steve Elliot was never the quickest, but he was a good player. It'll be like having 20p and Yates back. Them were the days

We could do with a quick CB even with Hartley signing ! For those unhappy with number of signings - Oxford and Wimbledon who went up with us haven't made any yet.

For a centre back he's not exactly slow lol. Centre backs hardly ever have pace, I would say Lockyer is quicker than most, especially at this level.

I had an old Shoot magazine that said central defenders are usually amongst the quickest players at a club, and used Gary Pallister being quicker than Ryan Giggs as an example. James Clarke is the only one of our current lot that I would say isn't slower than average.

Defenders are supposed to be agile, maybe have a bit of pace/acceleration, whereas wingers are supposed to be more about explosion and then agility. But that's in very absolute, old-school patterns, of course. Modern football requires a bit of everything

I don't understand why many believe CB's should be quick; it's mainly positional play and organisation that makes a player excel in that position.
