Then Clarke needs to get his fingers out and use his "connections" to get in some players who WILL stand out at this level. The next month will fly by now and we really need to be seeing some creative players coming in soon and the priority should be on getting some players with League experience to replace the many we have lost. To be honest I am very much unsure about Clarke and his ability to get players in. He has talked a good game but there seems to be less talking now and even less action. Well, of course, it is a good way to motivate players before a game to tell them that they are not top of his list. Also naturally he will want to alert other clubs about who he wants. But no doubt your experiemce of trialling and signing players is far superior to DCs.

I don't need to have any knowledge to give an opinion on how things are progressing with team building-just at the moment IMO Clarke chatted a good game but the action has been very slow and the number of players we are aftedr seems to go down every time Clarke speaks.

No you don't,and this preseason is starting to look like the last few and we know how we started those seasons. A very big couple of weeks coming up reguarding signings we make or don't make imo.

Coloured by the injuries picked up in pre-season last year, I would be tempted to hold on a bit before making any final decisions. God forbid, but an injury to a key player in a key position can dramatically change things.
You could argue that this could happen any time, but the Brunt and Broghammer injuries in pre-season last year dramatically affected the line-up and forced us to promote some players that would have been better strengthening in development games, e.g. Santos.
A moot point now, but I also suspect we would have played a more attacking 442 with Brunt and Harrold up front had both been fit all season.

As our FD was reportedly slow off the mark with his budgeting does anyone think that Darrell's recruitment pot may have shrunk still further?
Clearly the player budget would have substantially reduced anyway.

No you are right uninformed opinions are always best! DC has said for the last 2 weeks that he wants to get in 4 more players plus a couple of trialists but that at present a lot of players are keeping their options open. He might also have said that the FA have indicated that rovers may be reinstated so he has to be careful who he brings in.

Do we have the players to score/assist from midfield? I'm not so sure and this is my big worry at this moment in time. I'm willing to give DC the benefit of the next few weeks to rectify this, but we must go into the season with a settled squad/first 11. If we don't hit the ground running then i'm afraid next season will be a write off before we even start.
Over to you DC.

those quotes can be taken a thousand ways though. playing his cards close to his chest. bit of psychology in there.don;t tell someone they are amazing! price goes up, and performance could go down. just a genuine feeling that no-one is head and shoulders above the others, but he never said they aren't any good / underwhelming

After the team sheet was released for tonight I googled the players names. Nothing like an in-depth review ala GasheadWes but here we go:-
Craig Ross: GK, 24 years old. Previous club: Cambridge United
Ryan Higgins: RB, 20. Previous club: Birmingham City
Danny Haile: Defender, 18. Seems he's already a youth player for us.
Pierce Mitchell: CB, 18. Previous club: Bristol City
Lawson D'Ath: CM, 21. Previous club: Reading - had loan spells at Yeovil, Cheltenham, Exeter and Dagenham
Jonathan Brown: LW/ST, 24. Previous club: Hereford
Lewis Rankin: Midfielder, 18. Previous club: Coventry
Lewis Taaffe: Striker, 22. Previous(current?) club: Concord Rangers
Jordan Forrester: Striker, 18. Previous club: Coventry
Kane Manning: GK, ?. Previous club: Paulton Rovers

Lawson D'Ath & Craig Ross would be decent signings.

Pierce Mitchell , Lawson D'Ath & Craig Ross were the main 3 that stood out for me tonight. Yeah, they were definitely the best of the bunch I'd agree. Was pretty impressed with D'Ath actually, as much as you can be in a game like tonight. Was all him for the goal.

We really need to be looking at a bit higher level qualitywise or we are going to have a too youngster based squad which IMO was the biggest problem last year and it won't be any easier this season. Its ok going for all Conference and Lower if you want to end up with a Mid Table team but you need a good mix and we dont have that once you get in front of the back players. At the moment I think the players signed are OK but need something like 4 or 5 more signings mainly being players who will excite the fans a bit and show we mean business.
