Other than Mansell are we actually going to sign any experience or League Players? In all honesty although I think it is good to sign some good non League players we are not going to get anywhere without signing some experienced League players whether they be young League players or experienced ones. I see Torquay have today signed Bowman from York City and also they are having three or 4 EXPERIENCED midfield players training with them next week with the hope of signing one or two of them. Do we have any experienced triallists or are we really approaching this season on the cheap? We really do need to sign a few players to show a bit of ambition because if we don't I can see crowds of 3000 before Christmas.

We've signed 'league' players for the last five seasons.

DC made a good point in today's GP interview, he said Luton spent several seasons trying to sign league 1 & 2 players and it didn't work for them, he said you need players who know the division well and who might not be household names but know how to get the job done in that league.

Completely agree. Had we had this approach when last going down to L2, we may not have struggled so badly.

We need a bit of experience in the attacking areas without question IMO, especially now that we have lost Harrold and the chance to sign Gow. Whether that should be league experience is another question, but we would be very foolish to dismiss these types of players just because they did not produce for us in the past. Luton proved last season with Benson, Griffiths, Guttridge, Cullen that players from higher leagues can make a difference.

I'm in total agreement with SteveK. We've got one season in my opinion to get it right and without the parachute payment the following season I fear the worst.

They had plenty of players in their squad last year who had played league football though (and also signed from league clubs) so i'm not really sure where DC is coming from with this? They won the league after all...

Is our squad even that inexperienced compared to Torquay? Bear in mind our back five have around 900 League games between them.
5 more players should do it in my opinion.
- 2 more experienced wingers at this level (with Gosling and Harrison stepping in when needed) - A centre back to provide competition for Parkes/McChrystal - A striker to replace Harrold (perhaps a Benson type who can bring 'clever hold up play') - Back-up goalkeeper.
Then, with that added experience, I think we'll have a good mix.

They then signed 5, and were definitely more consistent in the second half of the season. However, to use them as a benchmark for lack of success is a bit odd, as they got in the play-offs every year apart from two. Season before last (7th) and this season (1st). EDIT: They definitely reverted more to signing players from Conference level and lower under John Still though - which I think is DC's point.

Don't we have league experience in our entire back line, half of the midfield and a striker? I thought it was a fairly good mix.

Two players that prove my point - Luke Guttridge (signed from Northampton) and Paul Benson (signed from Swindon on loan).

In his opening post of this thread, stevek192 said . . . Perhaps (if we're lucky) we may be able to pick up a couple of TUFC rejects, who knows? But seriously, has anyone heard anything about any new recruits on the horizon?

He has coach Hakan Heyrettin (Ex Grays, Waltham Forest, Thurrock manager) who has contacts. He has an experienced assistant in Terry Harris. What do we have?

Hopefully DC will rectify that problem in the next week or two. Luton in their first season didn't sign a single player from a Conference team until January. I meant an example of a team who failed because they got FL players. They still secured play-off spots each year, despite DC suggesting their approach was wrong. I completely agree with the two examples there, and I feel someone like Benson is exactly who we need now to fill in the gap left by Harrold. Unfortunately, most of these experienced FL players aren't available till January time. Mansell I feel provides the experience in midfield, and we have two very good players in Lockyer and Sinclair to play alongside him.

We lack quality, not necessarily experience.

In my opinion, we are doing things the right way. Other than Mildenhall, our experienced league players have generally not been good enough, yet the inexperienced players have shone. Lee Brown and Michael Smith have been just about the only positives to come out of the last 3 years, yet they had little or no league experience when they came through our door.
Give young, hungry lads, who are desperate to forge a career in football the opportunity to do just that, rather than players to whom Rovers in just another payday. I would sooner have players who have yet to reach their potential at our club than players who are over the hill.
