Looking at stats dons had the best of it. We were efficient with possession and chances! Looking forward to Saturday, first game for 4 months after illness. UTG. Ditto. My first game in that time too. I really enjoyed myself and very nice to see a working scoreboard and familiar faces not seen in too long a period.

I've actually got sympathy for Akinfenwa on the sending off. He comes on and gets pulled up for fouls on the two occasions he competes for the ball. It seemed to me like the referee was giving his decision based on what he thought was reputation. It was difficult to see who was fouling who (if either were) and probably six to one and half a dozen to the other. The one that lead to him going on the rant you can see James Clarke still had hold of his shirt (whatever happened before I can't tell). Prior to that the ref had been letting their defence get away with pushing and shoving. I don't think he was biased - just completely incompetent. To add to the pushing and shoving that he didn't blow for, here are a few other strange decisions: - Gave us a goal kick when it was clearly a corner, in the first half. A ball down wing (in front of the East Stand), which Parkes clearly heads on and goes out near the corner flag. The linesman correctly flagged for a corner and the referee incorrectly overruled him (some of the East Terrace got it wrong as well as the gave the linesman grief). - Gave us another corner when James Clarke headed over the bar from a corner (I've watched the video and can't see that any of their players touched it). - Blew up for half-time when one of their players was injured, but was clearly going to play on before that. - Linesy intercepts and comes away with the ball by the dugouts. Their player comes across and shoves him off the pitch. The ref is only 20 yards away, gives nothing, and they mount an attack. - Stops play to book one of their players for diving when we'd broken away up the pitch. Should have waited until the ball went out before booking him. - Gives 3 minutes injury time in the first half, when there were several stoppages (including one where one of their players took more than 3 minutes just to walk from one side of the pitch to the other), but 4 minutes in the second when I'm struggling to remember much in the way of stoppages at all. But what about Akinfenwa ranting and raving at the referee? ... Well, let's be honest, whatever he said was most probably true

I too felt sorry for the Big Man. The plenty times I've seen him before he has come across as a credit to his profession (and not a bad player in his heyday when he had knees.)

He was absolutely no worse than an average League Two ref.
Moaning at a ref is one thing, carrying on until you get sent off is just very silly.

He seems like a decent bloke and a good player, but he's let himself down on the two occasions he's got sent off at the Mem (nearly 12 years apart, surely some sort of record).

Akinfenwa's sending off was hilarious, total 'roid rage Even more hilarious was the fact that on walking off the pitch he was still having a right barney with some sort of invisible person next to him. Probably only those in West Enclosure would have seen it as he walked towards the tunnel. Really not sure what that was all about. Must have had some real demons going on there! My mate who is part of the stretcher bearers team is also a qualified paramedic was in the tunnel with the players before the game started and also at half time said that Akinfenwa was talking away to himself all the time, he just couldn't work out what was going on in his head. He recalls chatting away with him before other games and said he was the absolute gentleman. It appeared as if he was drug induced in his behaviour. very weird

He does have the reputation of being a thoroughly decent guy but you can't do what he did and not get sent off really. At some point you have to shut or you will get sent off. I don't think he has a bad disciplinary record generally though. The Wimbledon report suggested that he is probably not going to be retired-at his age and with his injury history that might be it for him as a pro - possibly it's just raging against the dying of the light. The guy has done amazingly well to last as long as he has with his natural build given the injuries he's had. It's actually a testament to his disciplined commitment to fitness training and the game in general - for 5/6 years he basically hasn't been allowed to train properly with the side because his knees are that shot. Most players would have chucked it in years ago rather than go through what he has.

I agree, I only mentioned the two red cards as trivia really. His fight with Kevin Austin feels like a lifetime ago.
Like the Wimbledon fans report suggests, I expect he's nearly finished as a League player. But he's done very well in his career, no question.
