the harsh reality of our relegation and the massive loss of income caused by going out of the league,losing the rugby club and trying to secure the new ground means we are unable to compete with other conference clubs for higher profile players.
personally im not unhappy with the players we have and as has already been pointed out on here most of our budget is used up by the players still on league contracts in non league.
but midson etc were out of reach for us.in my opinion.
ive come to accept that the best we can hope for this season coming is a top half finish with an outside chance of reaching the play offs,,will the crowds hold steady at say 5,000-5,500 if this happens? i hope so but i wouldnt want them to rack up even more debt trying to get back up straight away.
would our fans except say an 8th place finish if they could see an improving hard working team on the pitch? i would accept that but would others?

To be honest, yes, I would accept that.
We currently have a squad of 19 players, 4 of whom are 1st year pros and 1 who is a 2nd year pro who played only a few minutes of first team football last season.
We have to be realistic and say that things may get worse before they get better.
I will remain optimistic however that we can be play off contenders.

I dont except being where we are, let alone finishing 8th in the non-league, but the reality is as you say, probably spot on, I have never believed were a sleeping giant, thats absolute bull crap, we now need to get real, except where we are and get on with it, the crowds that we can generate as a big city football club is the only positive at the moment!

There may be no long term disadvantage in dropping down to the Conference South as that would at least get the painful medicine over and done with in one large dose. Once we were established there, and competing on a level playing field with clubs like Weston-Super-Mare and Bath City, I'm sure some semblance of pride would return and the future for Rovers would be a lot blighter. There is obviously the danger of a further drop into the Southern League but as long as we don't plan for that then it is unlikely to happen.

with possible exception of Constable would you have wanted any of these even if we could afford them? I'd rather have kids on way up not old blokes on way down anytime, especially in this league

I haven't even accepted that we are now a non-league club!!!
However, if our Chairman had a plan for the club to break-even five years ago then I may accept where we are today!
As our only plan has been to lash everything up the wall then the position we find ourselves in isn't good enough.
As for the Conference South, we could easily find ourselves there in 2015/16 - all on the back of not having a plan and some kind of footballing philosophy that we can get behind!

Sigh. We've been signing the likes of Midson, Constable, Iwelumo etc. for the last half a decade and we're in the fecking Conference. We looked at teams like Accrington, Dagenham etc. with s*** teams on paper, and wondered how they did better than us whilst we bent over backwards for JJO'T in the summer. Look at our 2006/07 squad, any 'superstars'? Not particularly, more a team who went out there and put everything on the line for BRFC. Damnit that's the sort of team I want again, not one full of money grabbing b******s like the ones you mention. It's all about how a manager can create a TEAM dynamic and spirit, how he operates tactically and how the team applies themselves both on and off the pitch. Having a couple of big-time charlies really doesn't help us in any of those areas. Not signing 'big names' = excellent Having a proper wage structure = excellent The likes of Smith and Mildenhall saying pre-season so far has been very strenuous = excellent Forgive me if this post bites me in the ass come August, but the signs so far have been good for me. Let's hope we can create that aforementioned team spirit, have a fully fit squad and put some performances in (and more importantly get some results!) next season  If those things happen, there's no reason we cannot challenge, or at least do well. |

there isnt any harm in a bit of sarcasm ie "paul buckle was right" or "conference south" but i sometimes think that some of the posters on here will be dissapointed if we got promoted sraight back up

-We have an experienced non league manager with contacts (not my words)
-We are signing non league players over league experience and this is the right way forward (again, not my words)
- A board who say they will do everything to go up first time (not my words)
- DC has told us we will have pace and goals in the team (not my words, but DC'S)
- The 12th best defence in league 2 last season still intact (FACT!)
I expect and demand a top 7 finish. I do not think that is too much to ask, especially after what we have been told going into this season by the board, DC and players.
Anything less should be considered a failure.

It might take a few years for expectations to be truly lowered but it won't be long before we are an established Conference outfit looking over our shoulder at the drop every year and are grateful for a top half finish. And that will be perfectly acceptable. |
