I thought I went to Portsmouth in the 70s but looking through my programmes the first one is from 83. I only have a couple of memories of that day, went on a special train and David Williams (think he was injured) was giving out letters from the club telling everyone to behave ( there had been trouble at Reading ). We stood at the Milton end,it was uncovered then and at full time a line of coppers stood across the pitch in front of us,all 6 foot at least...except one and he was fat, someone started singing "one little fat one, theres only one little fat one" and it seemed like all the Rovers lot joined in..he went bright red but he did end up giving us a wave. There was fighting going back to the station and windows got smashed when the train got stoned, but it was the same every away game then....sadly I cant remember the match at all,I looked it up and Rovers lost 1-0. You may well have we played millwall at Pompey in March 78 about 500 gas several thousand mill wall and all of Portsmouth were there it was not a day for the faint hearted and if some of the things that happened that day were repeated today it would make national headlines pretty sure we won although all I can remember was the gauntlet getting back to the station Why did we have to play the game at Pompey ? I would have been 15 & not allowed to go to away games. Not without my brothers or others that were deemed sensible. If only my parents knew

7am train out of parkway with a couple of fellow dudes & dudettes for a proper all day brewski session! Should be a good one & as already mentioned, we were stuffed after an hour last time out. Both our (arguably) best players got injured and we were knackered in no time! Here's to 3 points this time round! I read somewhere that there are engineering works and the train stops at Warminster, buses to Southampton and train to Portsmouth.
Correct, it's why we are nipping across to reading first ; ) Always thinking ahead!

Is it my old age playing tricks or did we play Pompey on a freezing afternoon, when all the main first division (old) matches were called off and we ended up on match of the day ? Think it ended 0-0

Think it ended 0-0 Boxing Day 1981. Rovers team: Martin Thomas; Vaughan Jones; Donnie Gillies; Neil Slatter; Aidan McCaffery; Tim Parkin; Brian Williams; David Williams; Gary Mabbutt; Shaun Penny; Mike Barrett. Sub Archie Stephens. Att: 11,395. Match of the Day showed all the highlights - it lasted about twenty seconds.

Pompey is up there with Leicester for scary away experiences, careful if your going, some quite unpleasant individuals down their. If you want to make a day of it, pop onto "the victory", most fascinating historic tour I've ever done

That must have been the 3-0. AB walking around their end (or side) Is my memory playing tricks on me or was he eating an ice cream! No it was a 2-1 win. The OB were randomly cracking nuckles of those on the cage and ended up in a pitch invasion with Bobby Gould coming over to try and restore order. Pretty sure Nicky Platnauer scored the winner. We were 1-0 at the time of the pitch invasion... Memory weak, was in the Main Stand and the locals went ape as our lads got over the huge fence onto the pitch. Seem to recall Graham Withey getting them both, one with neat footwork the other a towering header - but that might just be my imagination playing tricks. Great day!

Much better, no time for 90mins on a damn coach between trains. I read earlier that just under 3000 tickets have been sold? Immense stuff.

My last visit to Fratton Park was in the 80's, a night match in the first round of the League Cup. While on holiday in the Isle of Wight I popped over on the ferry to watch the game. The one and only time I have travelled overseas to watch the Gas.

I was about to question that figure of just under 3,000, as the club initially received 1,965, then got an extra 500. We've not had any updates since: www.bristolrovers.co.uk/news/article/portsmouth-tickets-sold-out-2919587.aspxThen noticed the Supporters Club website saying 2,827 sold: bristolroverssc.co.uk/2016/02/08/2827-sold/Unless someone from the Supporters Club can't count. EDIT: The previous supporters club update to that, mentioning numbers, only states an extra 500. Any posts between times only say that tickets are still available. So either we got 2 lots of extra 500, or the supporters club have forgotten how many they received and based their workings out on taking what we have left away from 2.965, rather than 2,465! bristolroverssc.co.uk/2016/01/29/tickets-available/

Yes 2 injured Smith and Woodards ?. I remember Ryan Taylor playing that day and getting stick same as at Oxford. Ricky Holmes was the winger we struggled to deal with on that day. Can't recall whether he came on or started though. He scored too maybe? Thought he would go on to better things. He's at Cobblers now

Well I'm heading down with my old man and taking my young un to his first proper away day with the Gas (Nuneaton doesn't count). Shame about the train as I didn't fancy a 3 hour journey from Trowbridge, so I will be driving.
