In today's Post they are reporting that Bristol's MP's have sent an open letter to the CEO of Sainsburys asking for reassurance that they are not going to pull out of the plan to build at the Mem.
It's very worrying that they feel the need to do this and shows that the club are becoming frustrated and concerned about Sainsburys behaviour.

Doesn't look good, why the sudden change from waiting for a few forms to be signed to now begging them not to pull out. Looks like the beginning of the end.

This is a worry because why couldn't these MPs just ask Nick Higgs how things are?
Charlotte Lesley has Higgs number i'm sure,so it seems Nick Higgs doesn't know what's what either!
Sainsbury have so far made no comment!

I mentioned in an earlier thread a month or so ago that I spoke to a friend who was involved with the Sainsbury's planning process and his personal view was that he was "very worried" and that he believed they would pull out as their whole business strategy is now changing. Let's hope his fears are proved wrong and that they continue.

why hasn't Charlotte asked her BFF Nick Aren't they friends anymore? or doesn't she believe him? Maybe they are still friends and she's trying to help him learn the answer to the question. Only three weeks to the open forum - he'll be sweating on finding out good news before then, I would imagine.

Certainly a lot in the news recently about the large shop strategy for the big supermarkets is starting to fail as people don't do big weekly shops anymore.

You would think there is money to be made for Sainsbury on the Mem site. The local population is over 30,000. But,if they've changed their "whole business strategy" (as Two headed sex beast explained might be)then that may well be that.
So,that would leave Rovers looking very much non league, with the worst board in England sat in Box 1,grinning inanely surrounded by their failure.

This is pretty worrying as it suggests the MPs have got wind of some evidence of Sainsbury's getting cold feet. It may also reveal why Nick Higgs has been a little uncomfortable in confirming timescale.
A couple of points to put into context: 1. Sainsbury's new CEO Mike Coupe has just taken over from Justin King (last Friday I think). This is an inside promotion, but it is unclear whether the new CEO will embark on a new strategic direction regarding larger stores. 2. The industry trend has been away from the largest supermarkets towards smaller local supermarkets and considerable pressure is being felt by the recent success of Lidl and Aldi. That is not to say that all larger supermarkets are being scrapped, just expansion of this sort continues to be scaled down across the sector.
Whether the MPs intervention is helpful or a hinderance - we will see. But this is an issue that we need straight answers from the club about.

How long should the MPs wait for an answer to such a vital question, what would be reasonable?
I would of thought unless they hear by the end of today then it all begins to look more likely the UWE will not happen.

If this is the case then clearly there is something going on behind the scenes, which the masses know little about, only suspect. But what is it that they know, that's the question. Whatever it is, I don't think that it will be welcome news, otherwise why would it be necessary for Bristol MP's to seek reassurances at this stage? Perhaps it's the time for NH to go through the compensation clause in the contract.

Nothing to see here folks. The diggers are all poised to go in as soon as minor legal technicalities are sorted. The delay is ENTIRELY attributable to TRASH and Jamie Carstairs. I've been assured on Twitter and on the forums that all is in hand and to stop being so negative (some people will complain about ANYTHING). Of course when this all falls through what else could the Board have done? How is it their fault? It's Sainsbury's fault. Not the Boards fault that for the second time a major partner will have withdrawn at the 11th hour. And how is it the Boards fault we are a non-league side? They backed John Ward and it was him that took us down. And we wouldn't be where we are now without them (sic). And we were only in the relegation zone for 70 minutes so stop your whining. The Board are doing a GREAT job. We're on the cusp of a new Stadium and from that it follows that as soon as we move in we're assured of a meteoric rise up the Leagues. Don't you know the special circumstances we have to deal with at the Mem. Anyway, relegation to non-league could be the best thing that has happened to us etc etc etc .... (and repeat)

I wonder if they will receive the same reply as I did a couple of weeks ago:
Thank you for your patience.
Our Property Team has confirmed that following the rejection of the judicial review challenge we are engaged in detailed legal talks with the other parties to this deal prior to completion, in the same way that is needed for any other site that we seek to acquire. We will update the community as soon as these have concluded and we have something we can announce.
We appreciate you taking the time to contact us and we hope to see you in store again soon.

If this wasn't water-tight when we got into it, then someone is being ridiculously naive. There's no way that any business should commit themselves to a massive long-term project like this that depended on the changeable, short-term whims of a huge company like Sainsbury's.

Thanks for this post NB. So this reply suggests that Sainsbury are in talks with BRFC ("other parties") and hopefully are sorting out a few 'bits and pieces' before the diggers can start at the UWE site. Does'nt it. Does'nt it?

I'm reading that reply as a positive......but then I would. By the way, I think the MPs have written to the wrong guy (see my post above). Justin King is probably in the Bahamas, Bermuda or Balsall Common with his pay off cheque safely nestled in his Sainsbury's bank account.
