In the evening post, which is crap as full of adverts, but here is the story elsewhere www.thesun.ie/irishsol/homepage/sport/irishfootball/6856924/Rory-Gaffney-I-suppose-Im-just-caught-by-the-bks-arent-I.html?CMP=spklr-_-Editorial-_-TWITTER-_-IrishSunSport-_-20160113-_-SunIESport-_-329565497-_-Imageandlink
RORY GAFFNEY is in the odd position of having done too well OUT on loan to get his wish of a permanent move.
Striker Gaffney, 26, is back at parent club Cambridge United after a successful month at Bristol Rovers, where he scored five goals in seven appearances.
Having made just six appearances in the previous 11 months at Cambridge following his move from Limerick, Gaffney was keen to make his move to Rovers permanent.
‘The Gas’ — Bristol’s nickname — were keen too and were told before Christmas that Gaffney was available on a free transfer.
But four goals in his final week before his loan spell ended changed all that as Cambridge had a rethink.
Gaffney told SunSport: “I suppose I’m just caught by the b*****ks, aren’t I?
“Cambridge had said that I was free to go to Bristol around Christmas Eve so they’ve changed their mind since so I’ve had to come back.
“I think I changed their mind but I would have wanted to stay at Bristol.
“It was a great move, it was a great seven games, we won five of them and drew two and I got five goals.
“It was my first time getting a run of games in England and I couldn’t have asked for more.
“At Cambridge, when I made my first start, I got dropped the following week after scoring two and I couldn’t get a run going.
“There was a change of manager and Shaun Derry said I wouldn’t get games under him.
“They tried to arrange a loan to the Conference and I said I wasn’t going to the Conference.
“Thankfully Bristol took a punt on me for a month.”
He swapped inaction with a mid-table Cambridge side for regular starts at a promotion-chasing Bristol Rovers and loved every minute of his time there.
Gaffney added: “I wasn’t playing and then I was told, ‘Bristol want you until the end of the year’.
“You think, ‘Yeah fantastic’. You score two and you think, ‘Ah great’, and then you score two again and it’s like, ‘This is brilliant’.
“I had a great understanding with the team, there was great support there. It was a great place.
“Then all of a sudden, it’s, ‘Ah no, you’re not allowed go to Bristol, come back’.
“Ten days ago, I was a free transfer. So you do think, ‘What’s going on here?’”
As he was Cambridge’s player, it was within the parent club’s rights and Gaffney did start in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat against Crawley but he is unsure what it all means.
He said: “They had a striker on loan but he’s gone back so I played at the weekend and got taken off after 75 minutes.
“I don’t know what will happen this weekend. Bristol want me but I don’t know what will happen here.”
