Got the impression from the commentary that it was only the Sarfend protests that made the ref speak to the linesman who had not initially given any reason to disallow it? Would be be interesting to hear from some one who was there. I can confirm that we were mystified! Taylor stood offside blocking the keepers view appears to be the reason, but if that's it its a very harsh decision I reckon. The linesman certainly didn't flag until after the referee had spoken to him after the protests. Cheers. That's how it came over on the radio. Onwards.....two second half goals will ease the pain.

Two Sarfend players yellow carded including Adam Barrett.Rovers 56% possession so doing OK.Pity our goal scoring potential is so poor.Clarke and McChrystal now receive yellow cards.Gas three goals in last 5 games isn't good enough. We need forwards who can score.

Sounds like a decent second-half performance... I'll say it again - frustrating!

One thing from the commentary seemed to be repeated over and over again....'...beaten in the air..." Just seems to be a theme in our matches.

36 attempts on goal in the last 2 games and no goals scored.
Says it all.
What on earth is going on with Easter when the manager would rather leave Taylor out there?

I would have brought on Lucas for Easter a lot earlier as he seemed more interested and more attacking.

We can concentrate on the league now!! Don't forget we've still got the quarter final of the Gloucestershire Senior Challenge Cup! Now, who are we playing on 19th January ? .................oh yes, Mangotsfield United away. I hear they have a new management team.

The 2nd half was much more encouraging and I think of we'd scored we would have gone on to win the match. I think we just need a couple of ugly goals and a favourable ref!
I hope someone can explain the strange phenomena of waving lights around during the game. Very strange indeed.

I left reasonably encouraged that we matched a League One side well for an hour, even if we did start badly again.
In many ways it was like the Cambridge game, but we had no luck at all in front of goal. Easter missed two chances that Taylor would've been crucified for, and our best chance fell to McChrystal who'd gone up front as an auxiliary striker and managed to bundle a sitter wide from 4 yards. Stick to defending please.
I still think the referee made a huge error in disallowing our goal, two Southend fans I spoke to briefly on the way out said that while Taylor was offside, the ball deflected off a defender and the keeper had no chance anyway. So not sure how Taylor was interfering in anything. I'd like to see it again.
I'm never going to lose sleep about being out of the Mickey Mouse Cup, but I hope we have more luck on Saturday. It feels to me like we're in danger of letting a reasonable start to the season slip into a battle at the wrong end of the table, and its not for lack of effort.

Easter had the two best chances of the night, not easy ones but as he is the experienced pro in the team you'd hope he would do better but of course he didn't. Taylor was his usual busy self, created one chance for himself which the goalie saved.

Me too, we didn't look out of place playing against them although I'm not sure they had a full strength team out. I don't think Mark's chance was a sitter, the ball came to him very quickly and seemed to richocet off his leg just past the post. As for our disallowed 'goal' it was too far away for any of us lot in the away end to have any clue why it wasn't allowed to stand. Another frustrating performance, that we could have won. I hope the players and managers don't get too deflated from it, overall I thought it was an excellent performance against League 1 opposition.

From the Southend United official site:
Boss pleased with progress in JPT after win against the Gas at Roots Hall.
Southend United boss Phil Brown praised the mentality of his side as the Blues progressed into the semi-finals of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy with a 1-0 win at home to Bristol Rovers.
But the manager also admitted it was a tricky test against Darrell Clarke's men, despite John White netting an early winner at Roots Hall on Tuesday night.
“It was hard work and what a good side they are,” Brown began after the game.
“I think that's their second away defeat in something like 29 or 30 games.
“The mentality was right and it started from the likes of Adam Barrett and Adam Thompson. It was a risk in playing two centre backs who haven't played for a number of months but it's a risk worth taking.
“Dan [Bentley]pulled off two one-on-one saves to keep us in the game and they were throwing caution to the wind towards the end.”

I think Rovers need a big brute of a centre forward as another option, also a right full back. In the second half I thought that Rovers made enough chances and were unlucky not to equalise. The basis of a good team is already there but there do need to be a few changes and additions,I don't think that James Clark is not a full back and Parkes is a bit suspect. Some of the play was good and I thought that it was an enjoyable match to watch in a good old stadium, bet its a great atmosphere there when they get a good crowd for a night game.

Lockyer, to me, can play right back. Clarke is better suited at centre half, but DC appears to be putting Lockyer there as first choice. The trouble is fitting Leads in the team as well. Parkes, as before, has lost form. Big centre forward, yes please, but they are probably waiting to see how Lucas gets on, to save money; so don't expect one before January, if then.
