Only been the once. Clinched promotion in 73/4 with a 0-0 draw on a Friday night. Don't remember much about the game except that Jim Eadie made a brilliant save near the end of the game. I confess to going on the pitch after the game. There were quite a few on the pitch before me. The police weren't arresting anybody, so I thought that I would risk it! I was on the pitch, then up in the stand with the players, two of us went but we spent all our money getting there and getting in,had no way to get home. Walking out after the celebrations we saw a Rovers coach outside a pub,we asked the driver any chance of a lift home,he said I am leaving in ten minutes if they don't leave the pub i'll leave them behind We got a lift on a half empty coach Also up in the stands with the team. Arm round Alan Warboys singing 'You'll never walk alone' if I remember correctly. No Irene then as I recall. Long trip home by train, up to London, across to Paddington and last train home. No recollection of the game apart from the result.

Who would want to be a keeper in those days? He got a free kick - what's he complaining about? Overprotected if you ask me.... What I liked was the reporter referring to some 'grand passing' which seemed to consist of Southend stringing 2 passes together.

badhand That's the one! Thanks for the video - I had forgotten how those old-type balls failed to bounce more than once(!) on the rice puddings they called pitches in those days. Not too much grass visible! It was brass monkey weather too, although I remember the sun being visible. The Bradford goal was scored by the man who was my all-time hero at Rovers; he lived for a while at the top of our street, on the corner of Tetbury Avenue. As a young lad, I idolised him. Great memories!

Blimey, what a contest, jumping in with two footed tackles even on the goalies although the ball clearly being in their possession. Did they have a race track round their pitch as well ?

The camera work was better than for the Cambridge game

My only time was 1974 when we clinched promotion. I got one of Frankie Prince's socks in the after match celebrations. Well worth the journey around the North Circular on a SC coach.

Roots Hall is my most visited ground (as I live in the area) and would often go as a youngster to watch Southend play (as my dad was a copper) so have many memories of it before it became an all seater stadium.
I've watched Rovers play there a few times but don't think I often saw us win!

Been there a few times. I still remember buying a hot dog and walking to my seat as the players were warming up. Paul Tait smashed a ball into the crowd and it took the hot dog straight out of my hand, I'd not even had a bite!
