All out 145 in front. Not terrible, but I can't help but think being bowled out for 289 isn't a great score here.
Suspect we'll be chasing 250+ to win.

Warner has gone off like a train, Clarke is with him. If they can turn this good start into something more substantial then it is very much game on. If Clarke fails again and Warner's luck runs out then they'll be really struggling to post much of a target.

I think they're in the 'struggling' camp now.
I am so, so pleased for Steve Finn. He couldn't have dreamed of a better comeback to the Test side than this.

Absolutely - I hope he gets the chance to come on and polish off the tail so he can finish with 5+ wickets and be in the frame for man of the match. He deserves to be because even though Anderson bowled superbly yesterday Finn was definitely the spark that lit the fuse and had the Aussies jumping about; for me this has been his match. Well done jackthegas as well! I thought you'd struggle to go to a more exciting and defining day than yesterday but I think he's managed to do it. Feel sorry for my mates with tickets for tomorrow mind. This could still be a 2 day game here and there certainly shouldn't be much left in it tomorrow.

Problem for the series I would think.
Big shame for him and for England. Shouldn't affect this match, but may well affect the series.

If it's a side strain, and it certainly looked like it, that's probably him gone for the rest of the summer which is a big problem because we really don't have anyone else. An attack of Broad, Finn and Wood would be very samey and also likely very expensive.

Who would you bring in for Jimmy ? How are Liam Plunkett and Graham Onions doing these days instead of Wood (although I like his attitude and he has bowled quite well) or is there a wild card available from the County circuit ? Outstanding bowling so far from the England team and like has been already said so pleased for Steve Finn in his return to Test cricket.

Outstanding bowling so far from the England team and like has been already said so pleased for Steve Finn in his return to Test cricket. Onions has barely played this season, hasn't done very well when he has and seems more or less done in the longer format unfortunately. Don't know Plunkett's injury situation but I don't think he's fully fit either. Currently seems to be playing as Yorkshire's 4th seamer. If he was fit he'd be the one I'd favour I think purely based on the type of bowler he is. Seems like Chris Jordan is also injured. Other options would be Footit, Woakes and as a wildcard a last minute SOS to Ryan Sidebottom who is ripping it up yet again in county cricket (again I'd seriously consider that option). No getting away from it that the cupboard is rather bare though. Anderson is pretty much the most irreplaceable player in the side - not just because he's so good but because we just don't really have anyone else who does what he does.

I'd also go for Sidebottom, especially at Trent Bridge. We don't need to re-invent any wheels or to try and 'blood' a youngster, we need someone who can exert control and keep the scoring down.
Whether he'd be up for it is another matter, I suppose, and it doesn't seem very ECB either.

England win by eight wickets. Ian Bell is rejuvenated! Yep - played England's 2 most important innings in the game. On to Trent Bridge. Interesting, I always thought our best chance of winning the series was to take the games at Edgbaston and Trent Bridge because that's where our bowlers should be most difficult to play. In the absence of Anderson though I wonder if we're slightly regretting the order of games. Trent Bridge is a result ground, it's very unlikely to be a draw so that will make things very interesting I would have thought.

Good shout on Ryan Sidebottom, he'd rather gone off my radar but as you say he's playing pretty well. I agree it's not time to bring in a complete novice, Wood I feel has played well but not sure he is the exact replacement we require. I've always felt Ryan was a team player, if picked I'm sure he wouldn't let this England team down.

Unsurprisingly, they have gone for the next in line rather than thinking creatively. I imagine if Plunkett is fit he'll go straight in, I don't see the point in rushing Wood back with Finn in the side. Presumably Footit is in as cover for Wood and/or Plunkett.

I think Plunkett is in there as cover for Finn and Broad. We'd have a very samey attack if we went with those three. Footit and Wood are next in line for a reason. I think they're genuinely the best we have. While I love Sidebottom to bits he is a complete liability in the field these days and he's almost 10mph slower than he was when he was playing for England. In 2009 when we needed a batsman for the 5th test we resisted the romantic idea of picking Trescothick or Ramprakash and went with Trott and that worked pretty well. Hopefully we'll have similar success this time.
I think Rushworth was the outside bet but that kind of horses for courses selection has rarely worked for England. Besides, Trent Bridge has been more like the Lords pitch in the last couple of tests played there.
