Davis Cup 2023 results: Great Britain beat Switzerland 2-1 to strengthen hopes of Final Eight spot..By Jonathan Jurejko, BBC Sport at Manchester Arena.Great Britain strengthened their bid to reach the Davis Cup Finals knockout stage as Dan Evans and Neal Skupski secured a tight win over Switzerland. Evans and Skupski won 6-3 6-3 against Swiss pair Stan Wawrinka and Dominic Stricker in the deciding doubles. In a best-of-three tie, Andy Murray won in the singles - later revealing he was missing his gran's funeral - before Wawrinka beat Cameron Norrie to level. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/7C42/production/_131101813_murray.jpgBritain, who play France in their final tie, can clinch progress this weekend. After also beating Australia in their opening Group B tie on Wednesday, Britain will qualify by beating the French on Sunday and claiming three wins from their three ties. But Britain could progress before that if the Swiss, who are now eliminated, beat Australia on Saturday. Asked how far Britain can go, captain Leon Smith said: "Honestly, I think we've only got to get ready for Sunday, it's a massive match. "[Qualification] will go down to the wire, we need a full house and a lot of noise." Four nations - Britain, Australia, France and Switzerland - are playing in the group-stage event held at Manchester's AO Arena. They all play each other once in a round-robin format, with the top two countries going through to the knockout stage - known as the 'Final Eight' - in Malaga in November. Britain are top of the table with each nation having played twice, having earned their second win of the week against Switzerland on Friday. Former world number one Murray, 36, fought back to beat Swiss debutant Leandro Riedi 6-7 (7-9) 6-4 6-4 on a difficult day where he became emotional on court when dedicating his win to his gran Ellen. Murray's win meant Norrie had the chance to seal victory, but the British number one lost 7-5 6-4 to three-time major champion Wawrinka. However, Evans and Wimbledon champion Skupski played superbly to win the doubles and spark jubilant celebrations in front of an ecstatic home crowd. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/DE62/production/_131103965_gb.jpg"We're using the whole squad and that's really important - everyone has played their part," Smith added. "We knew it would be tough today. Andy did a fantastic job in our first match, Stan played incredible against Cam, and I hoped for a quick doubles - that's what we got." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/6932/production/_131103962_murray.jpg

Davis Cup 2023 results: Great Britain to play France in decider after Australia beat Switzerland..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/63E2/production/_131107552_thanasikokkinakis.jpg Australia last won the Davis Cup in 2003 when their side included current captain Lleyton Hewitt (left)Great Britain must beat France in Manchester on Sunday to reach the Final Eight of the Davis Cup. Leon Smith's British side would have advanced on Saturday without playing if Switzerland had beaten Australia. However, Australia won 3-0 as Thanasi Kokkinakis and Alex de Minaur gained singles victories over Dominic Stricker and Marc-Andrea Huesler respectively. Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell then beat Stricker and Huesler 6-2 6-4 in doubles to secure Australia's qualification. Liam Smith's Great Britain beat Australia 2-1 on Wednesday and Switzerland 2-1 on Friday, and face France in their final Group B match on Sunday, with a crowd of more than 13,000 expected. "It's a massive match. It will go down to the wire - we need a full house and a lot of noise," said Smith. A loss would mean Britain, who last won the Davis Cup in 2015, miss out on the closing stages of the tournament. The match between Great Britain and France will be shown live on the BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport website from 1pm on Sunday.

Davis Cup 2023 results: Great Britain and France level after Dan Evans wins and Cameron Norrie loses..By Jonathan Jurejko, BBC Sport at Manchester Arena.ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/8107/production/_131113033_gettyimages-1686642840.jpgGreat Britain must win a deciding doubles to reach the Davis Cup Finals knockout stage after Cameron Norrie was unable to secure victory over France. With a spot in the Final Eight at stake, Norrie lost 7-6 (7-5) 3-6 7-5 to Ugo Humbert after handing over match point with a double fault. Earlier in the best-of-three tie, Dan Evans fought back from a set and break down to beat Arthur Fils 3-6 6-3 6-4. Evans and Neal Skupski will put Britain through if they win the doubles. The British pair, who have established themselves as Leon Smith's first-choice team, face experienced French duo Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin later on Sunday. Four nations - Britain, Australia, France and Switzerland - are playing in the group-stage event at Manchester's AO Arena. They all play each other once in a round-robin format, with the top two countries going through to the knockout stage of the men's team competition - known as the 'Final Eight' - in Malaga in November. With Australia already through and Switzerland eliminated, Britain know they can only qualify with a victory over the French. Britain, who last won the Davis Cup in 2015, are aiming for a return to the knockout stage after missing out last year. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/17/7fe4261f-f979-4594-a7fa-b1dd62b9e34b.jpgDan Evans and Neal Skupski

In front of a partisan British crowd in Manchester, Evans and Skupski beat Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin 1-6 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (8-6). Evans won from a set and a break down in the singles but Cameron Norrie lost. Evans and Skupski, roared on by the home fans, recovered to seal victory. "It was bonkers. I don't know what we've all sat through for nine hours," British captain Leon Smith said. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/0FBF/production/_131113040_evo_skup.jpgGreat Britain will now go on to the knockout phase of the men's team competition - known as the Final Eight - in Spanish city Malaga in November. Four nations - Britain, Australia, France and Switzerland - played in the round-robin event at Manchester's AO Arena, with the top two countries going through. Britain, who last won the Davis Cup in 2015, finished as Group B winners and will play Serbia or Italy when the draw is made on Tuesday. Australia progressed as runners-up, with defending champions Canada, the Czech Republic, Finland and the Netherlands completing the line-up. But notable absences will be hosts Spain, who failed to make it out of Group C, and 32-time champions the United States, who were stunned by Finland in their final Group D tie.

Guangzhou Open: GB's Harriet Dart wins opener as WTA returns to China..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/976/cpsprodpb/B52D/production/_131118364_gettyimages-1648478008.jpg Dart beat Fang Ying Xun of China and Valeria Savinykh in straight sets to qualify for the Guangzhou OpenBritain's Harriet Dart won her opening match of the Guangzhou Open as the Woman's Tennis Association resumed competition in China. The 27-year-old beat Germany's Jule Niemeier 6-3 6-2 to reach the last 16. Compatriot Jodie Burrage was knocked out by Polish top seed Magda Linette. The Guangzhou Open is the first WTA event since January 2020 to take place in China. Covid-19 disruption of the tour was followed by a boycott over allegations made by Peng Shuai. Former doubles world number one Peng said in November 2021 she was "forced" into a sexual relationship with former China vice-premier Zhang Gaoli. As a result, the WTA suspended its end-of-year events in China and said it would not return until there was an investigation and it had proof of Peng's safety. She later denied making the allegations though she has not been seen outside China since. Zhang has not commented publicly on the allegation. In April 2023, the WTA announced it would resume tournaments in China having accepted an investigation into the sexual assault allegations will not be carried out by the Chinese government. "We've been in this for 16 months and we are convinced that at this point our requests will not be met," WTA chief executive Steve Simon told BBC Sport at the time. "To continue with the same strategy doesn't make sense and a different approach is needed. Hopefully, by returning, more progress can be made." Qualifier Dart will face Belgian seventh seed Greet Minnen in the last 16 on Wednesday. Burrage took the first set in her match but went down 6-7 (3-7) 6-0 6-2 to Linette. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/624/cpsprodpb/670D/production/_131118362_gettyimages-1648478162.jpg

Davis Cup Finals 2023: Great Britain will take on Novak Djokovic’s Serbia in quarter-finals..By Russell Fuller, BBC tennis correspondent.ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/1/21/75e53be2-3bd5-48c8-b62b-d3cbf47829fa.jpgGreat Britain have been drawn to play Novak Djokovic's Serbia in the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup in Malaga. The knockout stage of the competition, which GB last won in 2015, will be played between 21st and 26th November. Dan Evans and Neal Skupski had to save four match points to beat France in a decisive doubles match in Manchester on Sunday to qualify for the last eight. Djokovic, who won with Serbia in 2010, says the competition is his top priority for the rest of the season. But the ties will be the best-of-three matches, and Serbia do not have any other singles players in the top 30. "We've topped this group so we expect to get a kinder draw in the quarter-finals but it's not panned out that way," Great Britain captain Leon Smith told BBC Sport. "But you know what, we deserve to be there - and we've got a chance against anyone. It doesn't matter if Novak plays for Serbia, or anything else. You've got to win two [singles] rubbers and a doubles and that's what we've proved to be good at." The winners will play either Italy or the Netherlands in the semi-finals, with Italy able to call on world number seven Jannik Sinner and top-20 player Lorenzo Musetti. Hosts Spain will be absent from the Final Eight after failing to make it out of Group C, while 32-time champions the United States also miss out after losing to Finland in their final Group D tie. In the top half of the draw, Canada will continue their title defence against the Finns, who are making their debut in the quarter-finals, while last year's runners-up Australia will play the Czech Republic. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/976/cpsprodpb/E7EC/production/_131127395_-4541c8c2-9b8f-4504-acad-0f02e8ac3ca0.png

Emma Raducanu: Former British number one to return next season after injury problems..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/976/cpsprodpb/15526/production/_131143378_gettyimages-1251963103.jpg Emma Raducanu's last match was a 6-2 6-1 defeat by Jelena Ostapenko in Stuttgart in AprilBritain's Emma Raducanu says she will make her return to tennis next season after struggling with injuries. The former world number 10 has missed three of the four Grand Slams this season after undergoing surgery on her ankle and both wrists in May. On Monday Raducanu dropped outside of the world's top 200 and she will not return to tennis before the season-ending WTA Finals in November. "Next season I'll be back," the 20-year-old told BBC London. "This season all the slams were finished so it was difficult to watch them go by but I was trying to stay in my lane as much as possible and keep focused on my recovery." Raducanu has been hampered by a series of injuries since her stunning US Open title win in 2021. The former British number one has not gone beyond the second round of any Grand Slam since becoming the first British woman in 44 years to win a major singles title. Asked about how she deals with criticism, Raducanu said: "The fact they are still talking about me even though I'm not at these events is just a compliment. Someone told me 'worry when they are not talking about you'." Raducanu returned to the practice court in August for the first time since undergoing surgery and, despite playing just 10 matches in 2023, she is hoping to return to better form and fulfil her Wimbledon dreams. "Wimbledon is the dream and always has been growing up. It's still the ultimate dream to win Wimbledon," she said.

The former world number one battled "very humid" conditions to beat Mo 7-5 6-3 and reach the last 16. "It was a very, very fast court," he said. "My opponent played a solid level at the beginning of the match and pushed me while I was trying to adjust to the conditions. "Once I managed to get ahead at the beginning of the second set, I felt a bit more comfortable but it wasn't easy and a lot of the players have said the same thing." The opening set was competitive and on serve until Murray broke the Chinese wildcard in the final game to edge the set 7-5. Murray then fought off four break points in his first two service games in the second set, before breaking for a 3-1 lead and maintaining the advantage. He served his 10th ace in the match to win on his first and only match point. It was the 36-year-old's first match since helping Great Britain reach the quarter-finals of the Davies Cup. He will now face Aslan Karatsev, who beat Murray in their only career meting at the 2022 Sydney Classic final.

Less than a week after helping Great Britain secure a place in the Davis Cup Finals last eight, Evans lost 6-3 6-3 to Russian Roman Safiullin. Evans, 33, and team-mate Neal Skupski saved four match points to edge a nerve-wracking decider against France in Manchester on Sunday. But, having received a first round bye, the fourth seed could not progress. Ranked 27th in the world, Evans' tournament was ended in 83 minutes by the 55th-ranked Safiullin, who will meet Australian Jordan Thompson in the quarter-finals. The Russian, who reached the 2021 Australian Open semi-finals as a qualifier, came through 4-6 6-3 6-2. Murray led 5-2 in the opening set and held off a Karasev fightback to take it but the world number 63 was the stronger after that. The veteran Scot lost his serve twice in the second and third sets as Karatsev wrapped up the victory. It made it two wins out of two for Karatsev, who had also beaten Murray in their only previous career meeting in the 2022 Sydney Classic final. Karatsev will face another Briton in the last eight after Cameron Norrie swept past Australian qualifier Marc Polmans 6-0 6-3. The world number 17 won 90% (26/29) of his first-serve points and did not face a break point on his way to victory as he chases his second title of the season. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/A6F7/production/_131234724_gettyimages-1679980544.jpg

Emma Raducanu tells girls they don't need men to succeed as she reads revised fairy tales which write out Prince Charming in new HSBC ad..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/09/22/14/75728781-12549229-image-a-55_1695388596951.jpgEmma Raducanu has told girls they don't need men to succeed in an advert that sees her read aloud revised fairy tales that do away with Prince Charming. The tennis star, 20, read from Fairer Tales by Emma Dodd in a nine-minute-long advert for HSBC's financial education programme. Dodd's stories revisit Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Rapunzel with a fresh take, in which Prince Charming is written out as a main character. In the reimagined tales, Cinderella is a successful businesswoman who designs her own sports shoe, Rapunzel becomes a property mogul by renting out her tower and Sleeping Beauty becomes rich from interest earned during her 100-year-long sleep. Emma - who is the sixth-highest earning tennis player in the world, in part thanks to numerous sponsorships and advertising deals - praised the women for succeeding without the help of a prince. She said: 'Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and Rapunzel are all successful young women. 'They have used their brains, imagination and good sense to earn enough money to look after themselves without a Prince Charming in sight. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/09/22/14/75728121-12549229-image-a-51_1695387741152.jpgEmma Raducanu of GB celebrates with the trophy US Open Championships 2021In Fairer Tales, Sleeping Beauty takes a more realistic 21st-century approach to men after she eventually wakes up from her sleep to the sound of Prince Charming ringing her doorbell. Readers are denied the traditional 'happy ever after' fairytale ending when she refuses to kiss him - let alone marry him. Beauty tells the prince: 'I don’t need a kiss because all your noisy ringing has already woken me up. And I’m certainly not going to marry you, we’ve only just met!' While in the original version Charming manages to track Cinderella down through her glass slipper, in the new version the heroine gains fortune through her own agency in setting up a shoe business. Her fairy godmother tells her: 'You shall go to the ball but you don't need to marry a prince to get away from all this. 'You have everything you need for success and happiness right inside of you.' i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/09/22/14/75728129-12549229-image-a-53_1695388342666.jpgShe has also teamed up with Porsche to become one of the stylish car's ambassadorsMeanwhile Rapunzel, far from being passively rescued, escapes her tower using her hair and rents it out to others, building up financial security. Raducanu said: 'Rapunzel is now a free woman, who earns lots of money and is able to live well. She even has some spare money, which she can use to buy a share in Cinderella’s new and exciting sports shoe business.' The tennis ace won the US Open in 2021 in only the second major tournament of her career when she was just 18 years old. However, the former British No1 has been dogged by injury since her record-breaking victory. She was forced to miss out on the recent US Open, French Open and Wimbledon after undergoing operations on her wrists and ankle. Raducanu fell out of the world's top 100 this week but insisted that she will make her return next season. She is currently ranked at number 214 but is the sixth-highest earning tennis player with annual takings of around £12.2million, in part thanks to sponsorships including those with HSBC. She has also worked with the likes of Dior, Tiffany, British Airways and Vodaphone. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/09/22/13/75671173-12549229-Emma_Raducanu_has_revealed_she_will_be_sidelined_for_the_remaind-a-47_1695386930948.jpgEmma Raducanu has revealed she will be sidelined for the remainder of the year Traditional fairytales have been given a revisionist spin in recent years and have been criticised for the lack of independence attributed to the female heroines. Rachel Zegler, who is playing Snow White in the upcoming film, admitted she 'hated' the original movie and described the prince as a 'stalker' and the storyline as 'weird' in a resurfaced clip. She promised that her version of Snow White is 'not going to be saved by the prince' and said 'she's not going to be dreaming about true love'. But the 22-year-old star was met with furious backlash online from fans, including one TikToker called Angie who said: 'Criticising Disney Princesses is not feminist. 'Not every woman is a leader, not every woman wants to be a leader, not every woman wants or craves power, and that's OK.'

Emma Raducanu has 'ultimate dream' - to win Wimbledon in front of her adoring home crowd.i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/07/11/21/73103715-0-image-a-18_1689108770193.jpg"Wimbledon is the dream and always has been growing up. It's still the ultimate dream to win Wimbledon," she told the BBC. There is still a long way to go before she can fulfil her childhood ambition though. A recent rankings update marked a two-year low for the former world No 10 as she dropped out of the WTA's top 200 rankings for the first time in 27 months (she is No 217 as of September 18). Raducanu has been plagued by injuries in recent years and could only watch this year's grass-court Grand Slam from the sidelines after undergoing surgery on her ankle and both wrists in May. However, in August, she returned to the practice court with compatriot Kyle Edmund at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton for the first time since her surgery. Reports suggest Raducanu is progressing well and she expects to achieve her goal of being ready for next season. "Next season I'll be back," Raducanu added. "This season all the slams were finished so it was difficult to watch them go by but I was trying to stay in my lane as much as possible and keep focused on my recovery." Radacanu has failed to progress beyond the second round of any Grand Slam tournament since becoming the first British woman in 44 years to win a major singles title when she picked up a US Open title in 2021. Since then the pressure has been mounting but the Bromley-based tennis star isn't concerned by the criticisms being levelled at her. "The fact they are still talking about me even though I'm not at these events is just a compliment," she said. "Someone told me 'worry when they are not talking about you'." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/07/11/22/73103755-12288661-Victoria_Azarenka_warned_Emma_Raducanu_pictured_she_shouldn_t_be-m-84_1689109901061.jpg

Zhuhai Championships: Britain's Cameron Norrie loses in quarter-finals to Aslan Karatsev..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/F48C/production/_131240626_tv087861892.jpg Great Britain progressed in the Davis Cup despite Cameron Norrie losing both his singles matches in ManchesterBritish number one Cameron Norrie was beaten in straight sets by Russia's Aslan Karatsev in the Zhuhai Championships quarter-finals. World number 17 Norrie, 28, who was the second seed in China, lost 7-6 (7-5) 7-6 (7-5) to the world number 63. Karatsev, 30, who knocked out Andy Murray in the last 16, edged another hard-fought contest on Sunday. He will face either Germany's Jan-Lennard Struff or Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka in the semi-finals. After losing the first set, Norrie backed up a break of serve to go 3-1 up in the second and then served for the set at 5-4. But Karatsev broke back before again edging out Norrie in a tie-break. Russian top seed Karen Khachanov takes on American Sebastian Korda in the second semi-final. Norrie was playing in his first singles tournament since reaching the US Open's round of 32 and was part of the team that helped Britain reach the final eight of the Davis Cup last week. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/A66C/production/_131240624_tv087863877.jpg

Laver Cup: Team World thrash Team Europe to retain trophy..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/2994/production/_131244601_gettyimages-1699274236.jpg Team World suffered four straight defeats by Team Europe when the tournament began in 2017 but have won the last two editionsTeam World thrashed Team Europe 13-2 to win the Laver Cup for a second successive year in Vancouver. Americans Ben Shelton and Frances Tiafoe beat Poland's Hubert Hurkacz and Russia's Andrey Rublev 7-6 (7-4) 7-6 (7-5) in the doubles to triumph. Team World dominated the tournament and only needed to win the doubles match to secure the trophy. Norwegian Casper Ruud's win over American Tommy Paul on Saturday sealed Europe's only points. With the winner being the first team to reach 13 points, Team World were on track after day one having won all four matches before Americans Taylor Fritz and Tiafoe both won in straight sets on Saturday and Felix Auger-Aliassime, of Canada, and Shelton added a doubles win to carry a 10-2 lead into the final day. "We stepped up and I thought all the guys played great," said Team World captain John McEnroe. "This was a special year for us. I know they're going to come back strong but I'll take two in a row any day. And I'm starting to think is it possible for three in a row!" Shelton, 20, knocked compatriot Tiafoe out of the US Open earlier this month, reaching the semi-final and rising to 19th in the world rankings, but the pair worked well as a partnership, coming from behind in both tie-breaks in a dramatic win. "It was very special being part of that last year - it was so emotional for being my first time. Now with Ben it's a lot of fun," Tiafoe said. Shelton said: "It's been crazy for me. I enjoyed being in a team environment, they did a great job cheering me on all week and I hope I did a good job cheering them on as well." Team Europe won the first four editions of the competition but that run came to an end in London last year when Team World emerged victorious at the tournament that marked the end of Roger Federer's career. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/184D8/production/_131244599_gettyimages-1699306949.jpg

The second seeds beat United States pair Nathaniel Lammons and Jackson Withrow 6-4 6-4 in China. It was their fourth title in 2023, following victories in Dallas, in the Bosnian city of Banja Luka at the Srpska Open, and in Geneva. Victory in China means the pair move to ninth in the ATP doubles team rankings. In a strong doubles display, Murray and Venus saved all 13 break points they faced against the Americans and dropped just one set. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/2689/production/_131256890_gettyimages-1648842084.jpgElsewhere in China on Tuesday, British number two Jodie Burrage was knocked out of the Ningbo Open as she lost 6-2 7-6 (7-1) to Tamara Korpatsch of Germany in the last 32. At the Japan Open, fellow Briton Harriet Dart was defeated by seventh seed Veronika Kudermetova 6-3 7-6 (7-4).

China Open: Andy Murray exits in first round with defeat by Alex de Minaur..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/13310/production/_131280687_gettyimages-1706076304.jpg Murray has failed to beat De Minaur in all five of their meetingsBritain's Andy Murray missed three match points as he suffered a first-round defeat by Alex de Minaur at the China Open. The former world number one lost 6-3 5-7 7-6 (8-6) in a tightly contested match in Beijing. Murray led 5-2 in the third set and had two match points on De Minaur's serve, before the Australian broke back as Murray served for the match. The Scot missed another match point in the tie-break as De Minaur prevailed. It is the 36-year-old's fifth successive loss to De Minaur, who is number 12 in the world rankings. Murray committed just 13 unforced errors compared with the 16 of De Minaur, who will play either Tommy Paul or second seed Daniil Medvedev in the second round. The 24-year-old becomes the fourth player to beat Murray in five consecutive matches, as well as Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic. Thursday's defeat is the third time this year Murray has been knocked out of a tournament in the opening round by De Minaur. The Australian ended Murray's chances of being seeded at Wimbledon with victory at Queen's in July, before a further win at the Monte Carlo Masters. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/4C98/production/_131280691_gettyimages-1706067665.jpg
