Australian Open 2023 results: Britons advance as doubles gets under way..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/0982/production/_128343420_whatsubject.jpgJoe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram won the Australian Open title in 2020 ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/13A32/production/_128343408_64328452.jpgNeal Skupski, Joe Salisbury and Jamie Murray were among the Britons who advanced to round two as doubles action got under way at the Australian Open. Skupski and his Dutch partner Wesley Koolhof, the world number one pair, cruised past Alexander Bublik of Kazakhstan and Australia's John-Patrick Smith 6-1 6-2. Second seeds Joe Salisbury and American Rajeev Ram won 6-2 6-3 against Constant Lestienne of France and American Marcos Giron, while it was another straight-set win for Murray and Michael Venus. Seeded 11th, Murray and his New Zealand partner defeated Colombia's Cristian Rodriguez and American Hunter Reese 6-4 6-2. All-British pairing Henry Patten and Julian Cash, who won a record 10 ATP Challenger titles together in 2022, won 6-4 6-3 on their Melbourne debut against Argentina's Pedro Cachin and Guido Pella. But the British success did not continue in the women's doubles, as Heather Watson and her American partner Danielle Collins were knocked out in the first round with a 6-4 6-2 defeat by Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk and Romanian Elena-Gabriela Ruse. The doubles had been scheduled to start on Wednesday but rain delays meant matches were pushed back a day. Former world number one and two-time men's doubles Grand Slam champion Murray had earlier said it was "unfair" to players that the schedule for Wednesday had been released so late, saying that it was published at 11.30pm on Tuesday, with players having to arrive at 8-8.30am for an 11am start. "Just start matches later and give players more rest/prep time," he tweeted. "You have lights!"

Rafael Nadal out for six to eight weeks after Australian Open injury..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/10F9E/production/_128343596_gettyimages-1246321237.jpgSpain's Rafael Nadal is expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks with a hip injury that hampered him during his exit from the Australian Open. The 22-time Grand Slam champion struggled to move in a 6-4 6-4 7-5 defeat by American Mackenzie McDonald in the second round on Wednesday. Nadal, 36, had an MRI scan on his left hip in Melbourne and it showed a tear in his left psoas muscle. The world number two will return to Spain to begin physiotherapy treatment. Top seed Nadal said he was "mentally destroyed" after his title defence in Melbourne came to an end. "The scan showed a grade two injury in the psoas of the left leg," Nadal tweeted on Thursday. "Now it is time to have rest and anti-inflammatory physiotherapy. "The normal recovery time is six to eight weeks." The timeframe means Nadal could be fit to play the first Masters tournament of the 2023 season at Indian Wells in March. The European clay-court season starts the following month and culminates in early June at the French Open, where Nadal hopes to win a record-extending 15th title. Can Rafael Nadal come back from this injury and win another slam..? he will be 37 on the 3rd June. The legend Roger Federer won his last slam, the Australian Open at the age of 36 and 5 months.

Australian Open 2023 results: Andy Murray beats Thanasi Kokkinakis at 4am in Melbourne..ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/A055/production/_128354014_murray.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/E0F7/production/_128319575_murray.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/F249/production/_128352026_gettyimages-1457682061-1.jpgAndy Murray produced another scarcely believable display to fight back from two sets down to beat Thanasi Kokkinakis in an epic Australian Open match finishing at 04:05 local time. In one of the latest finishes in tennis history, Murray won 4-6 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 7-5 on a night of gruelling physical and mental endurance. The second-round match started at 22:20 and lasted five hours 45 minutes. It was the longest contest in 35-year-old Murray's eventful career. The exhausted Briton remained straight-faced after taking his first match point before the two players enjoyed a warm embrace at the net. With his mum Judy in tears in the stands, he then let out a huge roar as he contemplated one of the best comebacks of his career. A healthy and boisterous crowd stayed inside Margaret Court Arena until the end, showing their appreciation for the efforts of both men and providing much-needed vocal support. The match is the second-latest finish in Australian Open history after a 2008 third-round match between Lleyton Hewitt and Marcos Baghdatis that ended at 04:34. "The match was very up and down, there was frustration, tension, excitement, all that stuff," Murray said. "It's amazing to win the match but I also want to go to bed now. I want to sleep." Murray is the second Briton to reach the third round at Melbourne Park this year, joining Dan Evans, with Cameron Norrie hoping to join them by beating Czech youngster Jiri Lehecka on Friday. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/8C9A/production/_128349953_murray.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/EE75/production/_128354016_murray.jpg'Who does it benefit?' - Murray unhappy with late finishThe late finish brought more questions about why tennis allows this to happen and led to more scrutiny of the scheduling. During the match, Murray screamed his frustration after losing a point and asked why they were "still playing at 3am". Afterwards, he continued to express his displeasure and told a huddle of journalists, who were waiting in a corridor underneath Rod Laver Arena in a bid to speed up his exit, it was a "farce". "Who is it beneficial for? A match like that and that's what the discussion is. Rather than about an epic match, it ends in a farce," he said. "Amazingly, people stayed until the end and created an atmosphere, I really appreciate that. Some people need to work. "But if my child was a ball kid for the tournament and they're coming home at 5am I'm snapping at that. "It's not beneficial for them, for the umpires, the officials. I don't think it's amazing for the fans. It's not good for the players."

Australian Open 2023: Jiri Lehecka beats Cameron Norrie at Melbourne Park..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/13DE9/production/_128358318_gettyimages-1457834375.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/F0F5/production/_128358616_lehecka.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/16625/production/_128358619_norrie.jpgBritish men's number one Cameron Norrie is out of the Australian Open after losing to rising star Jiri Lehecka. Norrie, seeded 11th, had been aiming to knock off another notable career milestone by reaching the last 16 at Melbourne Park for the first time. He led by two sets to one before Czech Lehecka fought back to win 6-7 (8-10) 6-3 3-6 6-1 6-4 in the 3rd round. The 27-year-old left-hander was far from his best and needed treatment on his left knee early in the decider. "I can't really put my finger on why I wasn't at my best, he played better than me and better in the bigger moments," said Norrie. "The knee did not affect the outcome of the match - it was a small niggle and I wanted to check it was nothing serious." Lehecka will play Canadian 6th seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in the fourth round on Sunday. It was a measure of revenge for the 21-year-old after he was beaten by Norrie at the Auckland Open last week. "I felt that I could beat him," said Lehecka, who is ranked 71st in the world. "The only thing I learned from that match [in Auckland] was to never give up and fight for every ball." Norrie's exit means Andy Murray - who won his extraordinary second-round match at 04:05 local time earlier on Friday - and Dan Evans are the only British players remaining in either singles draw. Evans plays his 3rd round match against Russian 5th seed Andrey Rublev on Margaret Court Arena at about 2am GMT on Saturday. Murray takes on Spanish 24th seed Roberto Bautista Agut in the opening match of the night session on the same court at 8am GMT.

Australian Open: Jamie Murray wins and loses in doubles on same day..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/0F19/production/_128356830_gettyimages-1455854687.jpgJamie Murray (right) and Michael Venus lost in their second-round match on Friday
Jamie Murray won his first-round mixed doubles match at the Australian Open after losing in the men's doubles second round on the same day. Murray and American partner Taylor Townsend beat Kirsten Flipkens and Edouard Roger-Vasselin 6-2 3-6 10-7. Earlier he and New Zealand partner Michael Venus lost 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 to Gonzola Escobar and Tomislav Brkic. Briton Neal Skupski and American partner Desirae Krawczyk also advanced to the mixed doubles round of 16. The third seeds beat Australian's John Peers and Storm Sanders 6-7 (3-7) 7-6 (14-12) 10-8 in their first-round match at Melbourne Park. In the men's tournament Briton Liam Glasspool and Finnish partner Harri Heliovaara reached the last 32, beating American pair Jackson Withrow and Nathaniel Lammons 7-6 (7-3) 6-3. All-British pairing Henry Patten and Julian Cash, who won a record 10 ATP Challenger titles together in 2022, won 6-4 7-6 (8-6) against Matwe Middelkoop and Robin Haase of the Netherlands. In the women's doubles Britons Alicia Barnett and Olivia Nicholls lost to Czechs Marketa Vondrousova and Miriam Kolodziejova in their first-round match 3-6 6-3 7-5.

Andy Murray v Roberto Bautista Agut - a repeat of 2019 match Briton suggested at time might be his last..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/A537/production/_128359224_gettyimages-1082206162.jpgAndy Murray lost in five sets to Roberto Bautista Agut at the 2019 Australian Open

Much has changed for Andy Murray since he last played Roberto Bautista Agut at the Australian Open - and much has stayed the same. Four years ago, Murray lost in the first round to the Spaniard in a match many thought was going to be his last. Since then he has gained a metal hip, but as he battled to take a five-set victory against Thanasi Kokkinakis in the early hours of Thursday, it was clear his desperate will to win is unchanged. The 35-year-old, who also needed five sets to beat Matteo Berrettini in the first round, finished playing at 04:00 Melbourne time and was back at Melbourne Park eight hours later to begin his third-round preparations. Now ranked 66th in the world, Murray will face 24th seed Bautista Agut for an Australian Open fourth-round place few would have dared to predict back in 2019. While Murray has spent a total of 10 hours and 34 minutes on court in the first two rounds, fourth seed Novak Djokovic has been out there for five hours and six minutes. Djokovic, seeking a 10th Australian Open title, continues his bid against Grigor Dimitrov but he has been hampered by a hamstring injury in Melbourne. The 21-time Grand Slam champion may benefit from the men's draw opening up in the early stages, with top two seeds Rafael Nadal and Casper Ruud already out. Britain's Dan Evans will also be in action on day six, playing fifth seed Andrey Rublev in the third round. In the women's draw, French fourth seed Caroline Garcia will play Germany's Laura Siegemund, while 21-year-old American qualifier Katie Volynets will attempt to keep her impressive run alive against Chinese 23rd seed Zhang Shuai. When Murray lost to Bautista Agut in 2019, he was shown an emotional tribute video and said: "If this was my last match, it was an amazing way to end." Having first had hip surgery in 2018, he had a second operation shortly after the 2019 Australian Open and made his singles return towards the end of that year. On Saturday, Murray has the chance to reach the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time since his run to the Wimbledon quarter-finals in 2017. He and Bautista Agut have met twice since 2019 - both times in 2022 - and the Spaniard won the two meetings in straight sets. What remains to be seen is how he will bounce back from two physically gruelling matches and one extremely late finish. He will play in the night session again against Bautista Agut. After his second-round win against Kokkinakis, Murray said he "felt better physically" on court than he had in the first round. He was not sure how he managed to get through the near six-hour contest, but reminded fans what had helped him grind through the years since his hip problems began, saying: "I have a big heart." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/5771/production/_128358322_bbc-sport-fixtures-detailed-sq--59572e8d-de27-4333-a91c-6dd1bbca4e11.png

Australian Open 2023: Dan Evans beaten by Andrey Rublev in 3rd round..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/16C70/production/_128369239_evans_gettytwo.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/11E50/production/_128369237_evans_getty.jpgBritain's Dan Evans was overpowered by Andrey Rublev in the third round of the Australian Open on Saturday. Evans lost 6-4 6-2 6-3 to fifth seed Rublev, who hit 60 winners to 22 unforced errors in a strong display. Russia's Rublev will face Danish teenager and ninth seed Holger Rune as he bids to reach the Melbourne quarter-finals for the first time. Evans' defeat leaves Andy Murray as the only British player left in either singles draw. Murray faces Spanish 24th seed Roberto Bautista Agut from 08:00 GMT on Saturday. "Andrey was too good. He played some good tennis," said 32-year-old Evans, who was seeded 25th. "I didn't feel I did too much wrong. I had a little chance in the first when I had break point, but I didn't take it. "He was very aggressive and better than me." Evans had won three of his six previous meetings with the 25-year-old Russian, but all of those were three-set matches. The British number two, who reached the fourth round in Melbourne in 2017, started well against Rublev, creating a break opportunity for a 4-3 lead in the first set. However, Rublev saved it and broke to close out the set, before upping his aggression to win the next two sets in solid style. "I'm not stupid, I know it's three out of five and a very different match to two out of three," said Evans. "That also gave me a lot of confidence that he'd have to win three. Obviously it didn't work out that way." Rublev thanked Evans after the match for giving him a banana during a changeover. "I asked the ball boy, but Danny asked for bananas earlier and he had two so he just said 'take it', and I caught it," Rublev said. "He helped me with some energy, for sure. I had extra because I ate the banana."

Australian Open 2023: Andy Murray loses to Roberto Bautista Agut..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/2A37/production/_128370801_murray.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/1375B/production/_128370797_murray.jpgA step too far even for MurrayEver since Murray beat Australia's Thanasi Kokkinakis in a five-set thriller that ended at a time he described as a "farce", the question was: how would he recover physically against 24th seed Bautista Agut? Murray, ranked 66th in the world, needed five hours and 45 minutes to beat Kokkinakis in the longest match of his eventful career. That was already an extraordinary effort - particularly for an ageing player with a lump of metal in his hip - after needing nearly five hours to beat Italian 13th seed Matteo Berrettini in the opening round. "I slept from 6-9am on the morning I played Kokkinakis, which obviously isn't enough," said Murray. "Then I had to come in [to Melbourne Park] and had about seven or eight blisters that I had to have drained. "My feet didn't feel great. My legs were actually OK, but I was struggling with my lower back. That was affecting my serve "That was really the main thing that I was struggling with." The signs were not good from the start. Regularly wincing after points, and walking gingerly between them, the five-time finalist looked to be in pain as Bautista Agut wrapped up the opening set in just 29 minutes. When the Spaniard, a consistent counter-puncher, moved a break up in the second set it looked like it would be a short night. But Murray, as he has so often in the past, refused to accept he was beaten. The British number four started moving a little more freely, at least during the points, and fought back to take the set into a tie-break. There, he again needed his fighting spirit. Murray trailed 5-2 but, with the support of the crowd behind him, recovered and levelled the match with his second set point. A tight third set - where Murray continued to produce some stunning shots but bent over in pain between points - stayed on serve until he finally buckled to help Bautista Agut break in the eighth game. Despite struggling to even serve, Murray broke for a 2-0 lead in the fourth set but Bautista Agut remained patient and broke for 5-4 before serving out the match. A excited celebration from the mild-mannered Bautista Agut signalled how deep he had to dig to see off the gallant Murray, who received a rapturous standing ovation when he trudged off court. "Playing Andy in a Slam is always very tough, he knows the game very well," said 2019 quarter-finalist Bautista Agut, who plays American Tommy Paul in the last 16. "I am very happy how I managed all the nerves and the tension during the match. I played good tennis and I'm happy with the win."

Australian Open 2023: Neal Skupski and Wesley Koolhof through to men's doubles third round..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/15637/production/_128370678_gettyimages-1458087216.jpgSkupski and Koolhof reached the quarter-finals together at last year's Australian Open
Briton Neal Skupski and Dutch partner Wesley Koolhof won a final-set tie-break to beat Petros and Stefanos Tsitsipas in the second round of the men's doubles at the Australian Open. The top seeds won 7-6 (8-6) 4-6 7-6 (10-7) against the Greek brothers. They next face Serbia's Nikola Cacic and Pakistan's Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi. Lloyd Glasspool of Britain and Finland's Harri Heliovaara take on Australian duo Jason Kubler and Rinky Hijikata later on Saturday. Should they win, Glasspool and Heliovaara will face Bosnian Tomislav Brkic and Ecuadorian Gonzalo Escobar in the last 16. US Open finalists Skupski and Koolhof are hoping to win their first Grand Slam together having reached the quarter-finals at Melbourne Park last year. Meanwhile, Stefanos Tsitsipas plays Italian Jake Sinner in the men's singles on Sunday after the third seed beat Tallon Griekspoor in straight sets on Friday.

The most annoying player ever to pick up a racquet. I have to say i agree he is a very annoying player, but he will overtake Rafa in the next few years and become the most boring leader in the most slams won. The only real thing to halt his progress this year will be covid, if he could hand over his entire $165m fortune for another couple of slams i'm sure he would.

Australian Open 2023 results: Joe Salisbury out of men's doubles but Neal Skupski into quarter-finals..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/4CFC/production/_128380791_whatsubject.jpgBritain's Joe Salisbury and his American partner Rajeev Ram are out of the Australian Open men's doubles after a three-set defeat in the third round. Second seeds Salisbury and Ram, the 2020 champions in Melbourne, lost 6-7 (4-7) 7-6 (8-6) 6-2 to Monaco's Hugo Nys and Jan Zielinski of Poland. They held match point in the second-set tie-break but could not convert it. It is the first time since the 2021 French Open that the pair have failed to reach the last eight of a Slam. But Britain's top seed Neal Skupski, with Dutch partner Wesley Koolhof, is through after they defeated Nikola Cacic of Serbia and Pakistan's Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi 6-4 6-2. The 2022 US Open finalists will face Australian wildcards Rinky Hijikata and Jason Kubler in the quarter-finals. Skupski is also through to the quarter-finals of the mixed doubles after he and American partner Desirae Krawczyk defeated Australian wildcards Alana Parnaby and Andrew Harris 6-2 6-4. Skupski and Krawczyk, seeded third, will face Britain's Jamie Murray and American Taylor Townsend next.

Year in year out. This tournament throws up more surprises and shock results than any other Grand Slam events. I am quite well versed in this game, but even I haven't heard of some of the names still in the draw. Gluten frees hamstring problems must be really bad if he dropped that many games in his match. I am beginning to feel sorry for him, having such disadvantages when playing must be really difficult. I also see that there is a possible investigation into his special drinks bottles that are mixed by his team and passed to him with love hearts and kisses written on them.

Novak Djokovic was left holding back tears on court after Jim Courier got the nine-time Australian Open champion talking about both of his kids and their hobbies following the Serbian's majestic win over Alex de Minaur. The Aussie was tipped to test Djokovic to the max, particularly with the Serbian struggling with a hamstring issue. But there was no signs of Djokovic's injury affecting his game through the fourth-round match. Speaking after the match, Djokovic admitted that he felt no issue in his hamstring throughout the contest. And Courier, who conducted the on-court interview with Djokovic, wanted to 'lighten the mood' by asking about the tennis icon's two kids. Courier then moved on to Djokovic's daughter, Tara, with the tennis icon having to hold back tears at the end. "She's not into tennis at all," Djokovic began. "She's into ballet, gymnastics. She's a really cute girl and keeping me grounded and humble as well. She spins me around every single day. Whenever she looks at me, I'm disarmed. Her look is the most beautiful look I've ever experienced in my life. "I miss them. I miss them a lot."

He felt no issue with the injury, simply because there isn't, and never had been, an injury. The blokes acting ability is pathetic beyond belief. Injured players don't play tennis to that level.

Nine-time champion Novak Djokovic has reached the Australian Open semi-finals, sweeping aside fifth seed Andrey Rublev in a devastating display.ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/0C76/production/_128409130_djokovic.jpgSerbia's Djokovic, 35, cut a frustrated figure at times but channelled his emotions into a ruthless 6-1 6-2 6-4 win over Russia's Rublev in Melbourne. Djokovic races through another win.."I could not be happier with my tennis. I'm playing solidly from the back of the court and love these conditions," said Djokovic, who has not been practising on the days between matches. "I'm going to keep going. I think it's important to be smart and wise with the body in these circumstances where it's more important to recover and get ready for the next challenge." Much of the talk has centred around the scale of Djokovic's hamstring injury, and racing through another victory - this one in little more than two hours - seems to be the best way to protect the problem. Rublev has one of the most powerful forehands in the game, but was dispirited by Djokovic's precise and incessant returning. Asked if it was his best performance of the tournament, Djokovic said: "I would rank it as number two but it is very close to the performance of two nights ago [against De Minaur]. The fourth seed, who again had his left thigh strapped, will play American Tommy Paul in the last four on Friday. Tommy Paul, 25, ended Ben Shelton's surprise run to reach a first major semi-final. American world number 35 Paul won 7-6 (8-6) 6-3 5-7 6-4 against 20-year-old compatriot Shelton on Rod Laver Arena. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/7F30/production/_128406523_gettyimages-1459253885.jpgTommy Paul is the 24th American man to reach the Australian Open semi-finals in the Open era and the first since Andy Roddick in 2009

Australian Open 2023: Britain's Neal Skupski knocked out of both doubles events..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/15F04/production/_128406898_whatsubject.jpgNeal Skupski (left) and Wesley Koolhof are the world number one pair in men's doublesNeal Skupski's Australian Open hopes were dashed as the Briton suffered two doubles defeats in one day. Skupski and Wesley Koolhof were stunned by Rinky Hijikata and Jason Kubler in the men's doubles quarter-finals. The top seeds were beaten 6-3 6-1 by the Australian wildcards. Skupski then lost in the mixed doubles semi-finals with American Desirae Krawczyk, going down 6-7 (5-7) 7-6 (7-5) 10-6 to Indian duo Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna. He had been hoping to reach back-to-back Grand Slam finals with Dutchman Koolhof after finishing as runners-up at the 2022 US Open. "On a personal level I was quite sluggish today. I don't know if it was from a late evening last night after the mixed. I just didn't feel right on the court. It was very disappointing because we've been playing well," said Liverpudlian Skupski. "Mixed doubles was on pretty quick after the men's, just over an hour. It's one of those things, it came down to a match tie-break again. I thought we could have made a lot more returns." Hijikata and Kubler are playing their first tournament as a partnership. They will take on eighth seeds Marcel Granollers of Spain and Horacio Zeballos of Argentina in the last four. Skupski and Krawczyk have won the past two Wimbledon mixed doubles titles but have never reached the final at Melbourne Park.
