Emma Raducanu: Tennis star receives MBE at Windsor Castle..Tennis star Emma Raducanu has said she is "extremely grateful" after meeting the King and receiving her MBE. The 20-year-old was awarded the honour for services to tennis, at an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle. Raducanu, from Bromley in south-east London, won the US Open in September 2021 when she was 18 years old. She became the first British woman to win a Grand Slam singles title since Virginia Wade in 1977 and the first qualifier of any nationality to do so. The former pupil at Newstead Wood School in Orpington beamed as she posed for pictures after meeting the King. In a statement issued by her agent, she said: "It's been great to receive my honour today from His Majesty the King - I feel extremely grateful." The Labour MP Dame Nia Griffith, who was conferred with her damehood at the same ceremony, said of Raducanu: "I think it is fantastic seeing a young person [achieve] the success that she had and I think obviously now she faces that incredibly challenging situation of coping with that success and coping also with disappointment. "And I certainly think it is wonderful to see young people being praised and being rewarded and let's make sure we give every young person the opportunities so that they can develop their talents to the full." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/480/cpsprodpb/13D4E/production/_127803218_emma337ab8b2b066f5cf084a7acdbddb45a5c61aad94.jpg

Emma Raducanu appoints Sebastian Sachs as new coach..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/497D/production/_128031881_sebastiansachs.jpgSebastian Sachs (left, with Belinda Bencic) is Emma Raducanu's fifth coach in 18 months
Emma Raducanu has appointed Sebastian Sachs as her new coach. The 30-year-old German, who guided Belinda Bencic to Olympic gold last year, has started working with the Briton, last year's US Open champion. Sachs is in Abu Dhabi with Raducanu, who lost on Friday to Wimbledon runner-up Ons Jabeur 5-7 6-3 (10-8) in an exhibition match on her injury return. The German had a brief career as a player on the Futures tour, but has enjoyed plenty of success as a coach. Before helping Bencic into the world's top 10, he worked with Julia Gorges and before that as part of Victoria Azarenka's team. Sachs will be Raducanu's fifth coach in 18 months. This year, the 20-year-old Briton has worked with first Torben Beltz and then Dmitry Tursunov. Tursunov decided not to continue the partnership after this year's US Open, despite Raducanu's improved performances since Wimbledon. The Russian spoke in late October of "red flags" and potential problems further down the line if she continued to listen to too many voices. "She's probably a two-and-a-half-year project. Her game is very raw," the 39-year-old Tursunov told tennismajors.com. "It's going to take some time, but as I said to her and to pretty much everyone on her team, 'I think you just need to have one voice and just try that for a bit'. "I could have stuck around, I could have agreed on everything that her team proposed, but, deep down, I felt like that wasn't the right thing to do," Tursunov is now coaching Bencic. Raducanu has only been able to return to full training in the past 10 days after a wrist injury ended her season prematurely. But in that time she has been working with Andy Murray's former physical trainer Jez Green. The British number one is set to start her 2023 season in Auckland in the first week of the new year. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/480/cpsprodpb/3C99/production/_128031551_emma.jpg

Andy Murray: Scot in good shape but wary of one 'big injury' ending career..Andy Murray says he is one "big injury" away from calling time on his career, but that he is currently in the best shape he has been in for some time. The three-time Grand Slam champion, 35, had hip surgery in 2018 and 2019. And, while 2022 has been disappointing, a training block with coach Ivan Lendl in Florida has convinced him he is fit enough to compete at the top level. "If my body is in good shape and I'm still able to compete consistently, I'll keep playing," Murray said. "But I can't look so far in advance with the age I'm at and with the issues I've had. If I was to have a big injury, I probably wouldn't try to come back from that." Murray played 45 singles matches in 2022, winning 26 and reaching finals in Stuttgart and Sydney to reach an end-of-year ranking of 49. His best run in a Grand Slam was reaching the third round of the US Open, where he lost in four sets to Matteo Berrettini. The former world number one will be part of the Scotland team taking on England in the Battle of the Brits in Aberdeen over the next two days. Murray will face Jack Draper on Wednesday and Dan Evans on Thursday, before teaming up with brother Jamie - who has arranged the event - to play Joe Salisbury and Neal Skupski. After that, the two-time Olympic gold medallist is targeting improved performances at the Grand Slams next year, starting at the Australian Open in January. "I spent three weeks in Florida, getting my body right and getting some work done on my game and it went really well," he said. "I'm certainly in better shape than I was. A lot of work was done in the gym, trying to build up my endurance and my stamina a bit and I'm hoping that's going to help me next year. "I wasn't happy with how last season went - certainly the last six months or so from a physical perspective - but my ranking still went from 125 to 50 in a year. I'm hoping that this year, with the work I've done, things will continue to improve and I'll still be motivated to get out there and compete." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/480/cpsprodpb/4909/production/_128079681_gettyimages-1244388402.jpg

Emma Raducanu says she is injury free and feels 'good' after exhibition match..Emma Raducanu says she is now injury free and feeling "good" following her exhibition match with Wimbledon runner-up Ons Jabeur in Abu Dhabi on Friday. The 20-year-old was beaten by Tunisian Jabeur but has been working on her fitness before the 2023 season. Raducanu announced on Friday she had appointed German Sebastian Sachs, 30, as her new coach. "Physically, body, injury-wise I'm good now, I'm clear. Touch wood it stays like that," said Raducanu. Last year's US Open champion will attend the World Cup final between Argentina and France in Doha on Sunday before flying to Singapore to resume her pre-season training. Raducanu's 2023 tennis campaign starts at the ASB Classic in Auckland on 2 January, before she heads to Melbourne for the Australian Open two weeks later. She added: "I really worked on my fitness the last two months, less on the tennis court. So I'm just trying to get my feeling on the court." Raducanu said the match against Jabeur was "pretty positive step in seeing where I'm at and what I can do better". "I really obviously want to work hard, try to get back on court as much as possible but I could overdo it if I didn't really think it through because I want to be back on court so much," the Briton added. "I just need to maybe cut down a little bit on the hours sometimes." One of her "biggest goals" for the season, Raducanu said, was to play freely and "not think" about her fitness. "I want to be able to go out there and just focus on the tennis," she said. "I think this year I'm in a better position but it's still going to take some time to develop fully. "I think my goal in 2023 is probably to win a title." Raducanu also spoke about Sachs, who is her fifth coach in 18 months after Russian Dmitry Tursunov ended their coaching partnership in October. "We are trialling until the end of the year and just seeing how it goes really," said 76th-ranked Raducanu. "It's been going well. I've done a week with him so far and I think he's a really calm influence. He's on it, switched on, and yeah, I'm excited to see how it goes." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/16A1/production/_128039750_emma.jpg

Battle of the Brits 2022: Andy Murray beats Jack Draper after Dan Evans wins opener..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/B837/production/_128095174_murraybody_getty.jpgAndy Murray rolled back the years, beating England's Jack Draper on a deciding tie-break, to leave the Battle of the Brits level on day one. The 35-year-old claimed a 6-2 1-6 12-10 victory for Team Scotland in Aberdeen after England's Dan Evans had won the opening rubber. Draper, 20, took the momentum into the 10-point tie break but Murray turned the tide with some trademark hustle. "While I am still able to do it this is what it is all about," he said. "Will to win, fighting for every point, chasing every ball down. It was part luck, part skill. "A few shots came off and it was an unbelievable ending. I've not played many tie-breaks like that before." Murray channelled the fervent home support to break three times in the opening set, claiming it via a second set point on the Draper serve. The Englishman responded strongly, breaking Murray three times to take the second set, showing the form that took him to this year's Next Gen Finals for the best young players on the ATP Tour. In the deciding tie-break he opened a 6-3 lead before Murray whipped up the crowd after reaching a ball out wide to force a backhand winner down the line. The Scot surfed that wave of support to level and eventually claimed victory on a third match point with a stunning forehand winner.

'We have a lot to thank Jamie Murray for' - Dan Evans..
Evans, 32, had put the English team in the driving seat, taking the opening rubber with a 6-4 6-2 victory over Scotland's 373rd-ranked McHugh.
The world number 27 repeated the two-set victory he enjoyed in his only previous meeting against the 22-year-old Glaswegian at the inaugural Battle of the Brits tournament in 2020.
Evans thanked tournament director Jamie Murray for setting up the event - the Scot staged the first two Battle of the Brits meetings during lockdown, without spectators, at a time when the regular tennis tours had been halted.
"We have a lot to thank him [Jamie Murray] for," said the Birmingham-born player. "He really looked after us back during Covid.
"I had a big chance to come and do it in front of the public and it wasn't even a choice really.
"All the players were always going to come. He has done an amazing job basically selling this place out so thanks so much to Jamie. It's an amazing event and I look forward to playing in many more."
Evans has one more singles match to play, against Andy Murray, in the afternoon session on Thursday.
The Battle of the Brits - between Team Scotland and Team England - involves four men's singles and two men's doubles matches spread over two days, from Wednesday to Thursday, 21-22 December.
As well as playing Evans, Andy Murray is due to partner brother Jamie in a doubles match, potentially for the final time in their careers, to close the tournament on Thursday evening.

United Cup: Great Britain beat Spain 3-1 to reach play-off..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/11ED3/production/_128172437_whatsubject.jpgGreat Britain reached the play-off round in the inaugural United Cup with victory over Spain in Sydney. Dan Evans gave Great Britain an unassailable 3-1 lead in the best-of-five contest at the Ken Rosewall Arena. The British number two defeated Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-3 1-6 6-3 after Harriet Dart lost 6-7 (6-8) 7-6 (7-5) 6-1 to world number 13 Paula Badosa. On Saturday Cameron Norrie beat Rafael Nadal and Katie Swan saw off Nuria Parrizas-Diaz to put Britain 2-0 ahead. Dart and Jonny O'Mara sealed a 4-1 win for GB on Monday, coming from behind to beat Jessica Bouzas Maneiro and David Vega Hernandez 3-6 6-2 10-5 in the final doubles rubber. "We've had a bit of luck, a few withdrawals," said 32-year-old Evans. "We've done unbelievably well on the court as well. "We pride ourselves on team spirit and working hard out there for each other." The mixed-team tournament involves six round-robin groups of three teams, played in Sydney, Perth and Brisbane. The winner of each City Final will progress to the semi-finals in Sydney, plus the runners-up with the best record. GB, captained by Tim Henman, will face the United States in Wednesday's Sydney City Final, which acts as a play-off for the semi-finals.

ASB Classic: Venus Williams starts 30th year on WTA Tour with win over Katie Volynets..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/14101/production/_128177128_whatsubject.jpgVenus Williams started her 30th year on the WTA Tour with a victory over fellow American Katie Volynets at the ASB Classic in Auckland, New Zealand. The 42-year-old beat Volynets, who is half her age, 7-6 (7-4) 6-2 and will play China's Lin Zhu next. Former world number one Williams made her Tour debut in October 1994. She entered four tournaments as a wildcard in 2022, the only year since 1994 in which she did not win a singles match. Her victory over Volynets - who turned 21 on New Year's Eve - was interrupted by rain during the first-set tie-break, which her opponent was leading. But Volynets faded as the match stretched into the evening, with Williams wrapping up her first singles win since Wimbledon in 2021. "It's hard when you're all fired up and just suddenly you have to stop," said Williams, who is now ranked 1,003 in the world. "I was so mad on the rain break. My coach could barely talk to me so I'm going to try to improve my attitude." Williams has been awarded a wildcard to compete in the Australian Open, 25 years after first playing at the tournament. A seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, Williams has never won the singles title in Melbourne, losing to now-retired younger sister Serena in the 2003 and 2017 finals. The Australian Open starts on the 16th January.

Andy Murray loses to Sebastian Korda in Adelaide International first round..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1480/production/_128184250_gettyimages-1453950797.jpgAndy Murray's first match of 2023 ended in a straight-set loss to American Sebastian Korda in the Adelaide International. The Briton, 35, ranked 49 in the world, 16 places below his opponent, was beaten 7-6 (7-3) 6-3. Murray had recovered from a break down in the opening set to force a tie-break but Korda, 22, took control of that and went on to dominate the second set. Murray's fellow Briton Kyle Edmund also exited the tournament on Tuesday. Edmund, who is ranked 582 in the world but was using a protected ranking to enter the event after a series of injuries, lost 6-3 6-2 to Italian sixth seed Jannick Sinner.

Emma Raducanu makes winning start to 2023 with victory in Auckland..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/07F6/production/_128183020_gettyimages-1453907134.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/480/cpsprodpb/114C/production/_128182440_gettyimages-1453907113.jpgEmma Raducanu made a winning start to 2023 with victory over teenager Linda Fruhvirtova in her opening match at the ASB Classic in Auckland. The Briton, 20, came through 4-6 6-4 6-2 against the 17-year-old Czech rising star in a rain-affected match. Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, was a set and a break down against an opponent ranked one place lower than her in the world at 79th. But she won four games on the trot to change the momentum and win the match. "I was like, you need to stop this and just pick it up, like be more aggressive and swing more freely," said Raducanu about her change in fortunes. "It's always difficult playing your first match of the year, so it was always going to be a little bit of a challenge, especially with the conditions. "I was loving the support. I felt like everyone was behind me and I absolutely loved it. Some moments it was tricky in the score and I would hear a young kid say 'Come on Emma' and I was like, 'come on, let's go'." She ended her 2022 campaign in early October with a wrist injury and took a short break to spend time with friends and family before starting a two-month block of fitness training. Raducanu will next face Slovak Viktoria Kuzmova, the world number 105.

ASB Classic: Emma Raducanu retires in tears with ankle injury 11 days before Australian Open..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/FE7E/production/_128205156_gettyimages-1454348356.jpgEmma Raducanu criticised the "slippery" courts at the ASB Classic in Auckland after retiring from her second-round match with an ankle injury. The Briton left the court in tears after rolling her ankle during the second set against Slovakia's Viktoria Kuzmova, with the score 6-0 5-7. It is just 11 days before the Australian Open begins in Melbourne. "The courts are incredibly slick, so to be honest it's not a surprise that this happened to someone," said Raducanu. The British number one, who didn't drop a game in the opening set, told New Zealand website Stuff: "It's difficult to take. I've put a lot of physical work in the last few months and I've been feeling good and optimistic. "So to be stopped by a freak injury, rolling an ankle, is pretty disappointing." The match was played on an indoor court because of persistent rain in Auckland. Raducanu, who said she would assess the injury over the next few days, tried to play on after receiving medical attention but withdrew two points into her opening service game at the start of the third set. The 2021 US Open champion had an injury-blighted 2022 season, retiring from five matches, but said she was injury-free and feeling "good" following an exhibition match in December. She began 2023 with victory over teenager Linda Fruhvirtova in her opening match in New Zealand in preparation for the season's first major.

Carlos Alcaraz: Injury rules world number one out of Australian Open..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/2CA8/production/_128223411_gettyimages-1424034840.jpgWorld number one Carlos Alcaraz is out of the Australian Open after suffering a leg injury in pre-season training. The 19-year-old Spaniard became the youngest men's world number one in history after winning his maiden Grand Slam at the US Open in September. He had been due to play in the Kooyong Classic next week before the Australian Open begins on 16 January. "When I was at my best in pre-season I picked up an injury through a chance, unnatural movement," Alcaraz said. "I'd worked so hard to get to my best level for Australia but unfortunately I won't be able to play the Kooyong or the Australian Open." He added: "It's tough, but I have to be optimistic, recover and look forward. See you in 2024 Australian Open." Alcaraz became the youngest man to hold the world number one position following his victory over Casper Ruud in the US Open final in New York four months ago. His absence at the Australian Open means compatriot and defending champion Rafael Nadal is set to be the men's top seed at Melbourne Park. An abdominal injury ruled Alcaraz out of the season-ending ATP Finals and Davis Cup towards the end of 2022.

Venus Williams withdraws injured from Australian Open..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/64F2/production/_128224852_gettyimages-1454308847.jpgVenus Williams has withdrawn from the upcoming Australian Open after sustaining an injury at a warm-up tournament. The 42-year-old had been awarded a wildcard for the Grand Slam, which begins on 16 January. Williams was injured while preparing for the Australian Open at the ASB Classic in Auckland. Other News:
There are doubts over world number one Iga Swiatek's fitness after she withdrew from a tournament next week. Poland's Swiatek, 21, will not play the Adelaide International 2 WTA 500 event because of a right shoulder issue. Three-time major winner Swiatek was in tears after a straight-set defeat by American Jessica Pegula in the United Cup mixed teams tournament in Sydney on Friday. Australian world number 173 Kimberly Birrell has taken the wildcard place of seven-time singles Grand Slam champion Williams. It remains to be seen whether British number one Emma Raducanu will feature in the Australian Open after she rolled her ankle at the ASB Classic on Thursday.

Australian Open: Emma Raducanu heading to Melbourne hoping to win fitness race..
The British number one retired in tears from her second-round match against Viktoria Kuzmova at the ASB Classic in Auckland on Thursday after rolling her left ankle.
Raducanu had the joint taped up ahead of the deciding set but played only one more point, wincing in pain before deciding she could not continue. The exact nature of the injury is not yet known, but the PA news agency understands her team hope it is a minor strain, giving the 20-year-old a chance of being fit for the year's opening grand slam beginning on January 16th.
Raducanu's frustration was fully understandable given all the injury problems she suffered in her first full year on tour, culminating in a wrist issue that kept her off court for two months.
She began 2023 feeling good physically and won her first match in Auckland against Linda Fruhvirtova before taking the opening set 6-0 against Kuzmova and then being pegged back.
Bad weather in Auckland meant the match was played indoors and Raducanu was unhappy with the condition of the courts. "It's difficult to take," she said on stuff.co.nz. "I've put a lot of physical work in the last few months and I've been feeling good and optimistic. "So to be stopped by a freak injury, rolling an ankle, is pretty disappointing, in the first week as well. I thought I was playing some pretty decent tennis. "The courts are incredibly slick, like very slippery, so to be honest it's not a surprise that this happened to someone."
Tournament director Nicolas Lamperin responded to Raducanu's claims on Friday by insisting the indoor courts were safe. He said: "The courts have been checked, the courts are fit to play. We've had a number of matches on these courts and we haven't had any injuries apart from yesterday and the courts had been redone at the start of the year.
"We are obviously very sorry about Emma's injury. Every player works really hard in the off-season and that's not what you expect when you play a tournament in week one. "However, injuries happen all the time. It could have happened on an outdoor court." Raducanu made her Australian Open debut last year, reaching the second round.

Australian Open: Players can compete if they have Covid-19..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/14C47/production/_128236058_gettyimages-1202918521.jpgPlayers at the Australian Open will not need to take Covid-19 tests and could play if they have the virus. "We just wanted to follow what's currently in the community," tournament director Craig Tiley said. "We have gone a step further by making a recommendation around staying away when you're ill." Last year players had to test daily and isolate if positive and also had to be vaccinated, while in 2021 the event took place in a biosecure bubble. Nine-time champion Novak Djokovic, who is unvaccinated, was deported last January just before the tournament because of his Covid-19 status. "We've made it clear to our players, as well as our staff, if anyone is feeling unwell, stay home, our medical staff will continue to monitor that, with the players individually as well." Tiley added. "It's a normalised environment for us and, not dissimilar to the cricket, there will potentially be players that will compete with Covid-19." Last week cricketer Matt Renshaw continued to play for Australia in a five-day test match against South Africa in Sydney after testing positive for Covid-19. The Australian Open starts on Monday 16th January and runs until Sunday 29th January.

Emma Raducanu hopes to be fit for Australian Open..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/480/cpsprodpb/A1A7/production/_128238314_gettyimages-1454333705.jpgEmma Raducanu says she hopes she will be fit for this month's Australian Open but is trying "not to expect too much". The 20-year-old Briton retired from her second-round match at the ASB Classic in Auckland on Thursday after slipping and rolling her left ankle. The Grand Slam begins next Monday, with the full extent of the 2021 US Open champion's injury yet to be diagnosed. "We'll see hopefully by Monday or whenever the tournament starts," Raducanu said. "We're just taking it a day at a time and not trying to expect too much at this point." Raducanu left the court in tears last week after rolling her ankle during the second set against Slovakia's Viktoria Kuzmova, with the score 6-0 5-7. The world number 75 is hoping to improve on her second-round exit in her Australian Open debut in 2022. "It was really unfortunate because I was feeling great about my season and I was feeling really good with the preparation I did physically," said Raducanu, who has been working with Andy Murray's former physical trainer Jez Green in a bid to make herself less injury prone. "I just had an accident on the court, I don't know what I could have done to really prevent that." Raducanu had an injury-blighted 2022 season, retiring from five matches, but said she was injury-free and feeling "good" following an exhibition match in December.

Heather Watson: Briton loses in Australian Open qualifying..ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/153B3/production/_128236968_70689d5f1ca7ac7ab1ebd9d2a8fd62b0e2e11e1a.jpgHeather Watson was among three Britons beaten in the first round of qualifying for next week's Australian Open. The British number five lost 7-6 (7-4) 6-3 to Spanish world number 145 Aliona Bolsova as she failed to reach the main draw for the first time since 2011. Watson, 30, who reached the Wimbledon fourth round last year, has now failed to qualify for a second Grand Slam in a row after missing out at the US Open. Qualifying continues on Tuesday (23:00 GMT Monday), with Britons Lily Miyazaki, Katie Swan, Jodie Burrage and Katie Boulter in action. They will hope to join Harriet Dart and Emma Raducanu as Britain's representatives in the women's singles main draw, although 2021 US Open champion Raducanu is still recovering from an ankle injury. In men's qualifying, Britons Liam Broady and Ryan Peniston face Ecuador's Emilio Gomez and Canada's Alexis Galarneau respectively on Tuesday. The pair could join Cameron Norrie, Dan Evans, Kyle Edmund, Andy Murray and Jack Draper in the main draw of the men's singles at the opening Grand Slam of the year.
