Kevin Pietersen says he is going to work on a possible return to the England side. The batsman, 34, was sacked in February 2014 but was given encouragement that he might be able to return to the team in future by incoming England and Wales Cricket Board chairman Colin Graves. Graves said the first step back for Pietersen would be to play county cricket. Pietersen said: "I'm going to try to work this out for sure." The batsman also said he was humbled by the support since Graves' comments. Graves was speaking to BBC Radio 5 live's Sportsweek on Sunday and later told the Daily Telegraph that the selectors "can't ignore" Pietersen if he "scores a lot of runs" for a county side. The ECB then moved to clarify the situation over the prospect of Pietersen returning to the international fold. "Colin Graves is correct. Nothing has changed," said an ECB spokesperson. "Only players who are playing consistent high-quality county cricket and who are seen as a positive influence will be selected." And on and on it goes.......I think we'll still be hearing KP griping on about this in 20 years time in a desperate attempt to keep his name in the media.

going by the current fiasco in the southern hemisphere, someone is about to press the panic button and get him back on board, where the current crop should be going back to learning the art of bowling/batting,...... therefore blanking out the need for Mr egotist

There are a couple of examples (notably the Oval 2005) but more often than not when under real personal or team pressure he didn't deliver.

I wish the ECB would just say thank you KP for all your service in the past but it is time for us to move on and we will not be selecting you again. What on earth has he even done in recent years to warrant all this clamouring for his recall, I don't even think he has done that much in the Indian competition has he ? It's all become so predictable and boring from KP now

He has now declared undying love for King and Country by giving up this years IPL millions to go and play for Surrey and try and get back in the England team. He's dominated the narrative of the England team for so long I almost feel like he is an unwelcome lodger living in my house!

Not sure KP even knows where Somerset is! Basically he seems to refuse to play for anyone that isn't based within a 5 minute drive of his house...

Well what will be interesting is if he scores a load of runs for whoever he lowers himself to play for whether the selectors are actually prepared to pick him if as it has been reported they will consider his performances.

If he puts a run of scores together I don't think they'll have much choice given the current state of the England team. All it does is highlight the stupidity of the quick scapegoating of KP that happened after the Ashes last year. Is it me or has Paul Downton not been an utter and complete catastrophe for England? I'm not sure he's done a single thing right.

Jonathan Agnew wrote about KP; There was no need to sack Pietersen. They could merely have decided to move on and not pick him again without a big song and dance. But that is the way they chose to go. It has created such a massive reaction and they only have themselves to blame for that really.
Downton, who took over from Hugh Morris, was not in a position as MD in which he was solely dealing with the England team; there was much to the role.
Downton had a difficult time of it. He was briefed that his first job must be to get rid of Pietersen. He took responsibility for that, but it was not 100% his call - it was a broader decision.
So perhaps he was an easy person to target with regards to KP. He has taken a lot of flak for that. And likewise he was not directly hands-on with the England team.
You have to question how much responsibility he actually had on England team matters.

Correct - it was all about finding someone to scapegoat after the Ashes debacle. KP has always been a marmite character to say the least and so they threw him under the bus. I don't like Pieterson at all but that was a cowardly thing to do and the ECB deserved all the knives KP and his mates subsequently hurled at them. It's true that KP seems like a selfish somewhat brainless git who has been terribly advised over the years and buys his myth but the ECB have behaved even worse. It's been a spectacular race to the bottom and it's still not over yet.

After a ton against an amateur team, he's brought right back to ground in his first County game.
Even without his planet-sized ego, Alex Hales is ahead of him now after an impressive 222 at the weekend.

Too right it is not over. KP has fled back to the welcoming and warm embrace of the IPL.

I don't blame him really. He's wasting his time trying to get back in the England set up. 355* was a nice parting shot though!

Too right it is not over. KP has fled back to the welcoming and warm embrace of the IPL. Sadly, he isn`t. He`s injured his calf and Achilles, and will be out for two weeks. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/cricket/32718965Apparently, the injury was caused when Pietersen attempted to lift his ego into the boot of his car. Anyway, the IPL will just have to get along without him sending text messages to all the other teams, telling them how best to beat his own side.

There is only one thing that interests KP and that's exclusively KP. He's caused controversy wherever he's gone, fallen out with virtually every team he's ever played for including South Africa and then decided to create his own illusion in his adopted country and has fallen out with them. Why he just couldn't retire like others without all this fuss and nonsense just shows how far his head is up his backside. As someone has said the last 18/24 months he has hardly produced anything of any worth including his performances in the IPL. Time to move on, acknowledge his record run scoring and his undoubted ability and develop the next generation.
