About the same age as me first meet him in the mid seventies one of a fearsome mob from Lawrence Weston /brentry which included Horace mike w maff Simons ( who was killed mid eighties in Australia ) toppers brother who was killed in a car crash we used to all meet up in town before games and get up to all sorts of nonsense later on when he had his boys we would all meet in the sugar loaf before games so many good friends from that era now gone .topper was a top gashead who will be sorely missed by all who knew him and it's just occurred to me I've known him forty years and didn't know his real name rest in peace mate always cheered me up in his company some great memories

As a friend of his sons I came to know topper very well, one thing I will always remember is that know matter what I did to p*ss anyone off or however much anyone moaned about me he would always say "yeah but he's a gashead" and that's all that mattered to him haha by far the biggest gashead I've ever met and as much a gas legend to me as any player that's ever come and gone. r.i.p top, hope it's a big win tonight just for you

Unbeknown to me, I went on a nutters coach to Wimbledon in February 1982 and much to our amusement, the first name on the coach list was Topper. I should have known what day it was going to be.
It was the day that Olly made his debut, Topper was in their end with no-one to fight and Dave Ashwin tried to set fire to Lloyds Bank in Marlborough after a Saturday night visit, nearly getting us all arrested. When I finally got back to Kingswood after a 1-0 defeat and a brush with Wiltshire CID, Chasers refused me entry (normally my leather box jacket and wing-collar would have secured easy entry, but a Donkey jacket was no substitute). City even won 2-0 (rare in 81-2 season).
The curse of Topper. RIP though.

I am gutted , Topper (Christopher Marden) i think that's how you spell it !!! was a top Gashead. We go back 40 years and kept in touch up until the couple of years ago.We worked together at Cadbury Typhoo in Avonmouth and became great mates travelling regularly to Home & Away games . His life was Bristol Rovers and always found enough time to talk to any Gashead about the good times and bad times. He would regularly come into work on a Monday morning with a black eye or cut lip after coming back from the midlands or the north sticking up for his beloved Rovers . I can remember back in the 70's he went to 3 away games in a week and saw Rovers concede 17 goals and score only 1..... if I remember right we lost at Blackpool 6-1 , Forest FA Cup tie at Villa Park 6-0 third replay in those days and Oldham 5-0 if i am not right i am not far off !!!!. He spent all his money as a youngster on Rovers. A true 'Gashead' who will be sadly missed by many and i hope he meets up with all the other top Gasheads who are not with us now. It seems a generation that was known as 'The Tote ' are gradually getting smaller but we all have great memories. Rest in peace mate i for one will miss your great smile !!!,- Stewart

Sad to hear that another one of our characters has gone along with Kev Jenks a few weeks ago and Bob D a couple of years it's been now.
Despite some of the nonsense written by aliases on here of lads not being Gasheads most people know people like Topper and Dolan are every Gasheads and part the fabric of the club and no one can take that away.
Say hello to Bob and Kev for us Topper, RIP UTG.

There are 2 things not quite right with this story it wasn't an nutters coach but invite only special quests and I didn't try to set fire to lloyds I succeeded always hated banks and bankers luckily 7 year statue of limitations means I can't get nicked for it now good job I didn't get nicked as I was still on parole then good day as I remember it they have a good old mob in heaven now I'll have a natch for you topper top boy sadly missed

Anyway talk of Topper being a big lad is grossly unfair, truth is he was a very big lad - apparently a staggering 35 stone shortly before he died. His funeral will be at Westerleigh as Canford can't take coffins that big, I was stunned when I heard this.

Chasers refused me entry (normally my leather box jacket and wing-collar would have secured easy entry, but a Donkey jacket was no substitute). it may be a long time ago, but I suspect that the lack of eye-liner was as much of a clue as the donkey jacket

Dave Ashwin - legend of the Trident and protector of Ashton Gate Rovers escorts. I probably owe you my life.
Andrew Knight invited me on board, but I was out of my depth, especially when confronted with all those barking alsations. With hindsight, I should have put the eye-liner on and headed straight to Chasers for a rendition of "Come on Eileen".
I had ordered fish and chips down the road in Marlborough and John Kays hastily summoned me onto the coach (before collection) as a result of Dave's pyromaniac tendencies.
The CID threatened to take us all to Swindon if someone didn't own up. The silver-tongued Kays came to our rescue.
One fact is undeniable. Topper was top of the coach list!

I heard today that the funeral is the 11th, apparently only Saturdays were available at Westerleigh.

I didn't know him well, although he always seemed like a nice bloke and he was an ex-pupil of my dad, and they trained together at Bob's gym in Avonmouth until fairly recently so he will be very sad to hear this news. RIP

I was on that coach, and im no nutter, bit of a clash in Marlborough, nothing too bad,and wasn't invited, just missed the supporters coach and that one was outside the black swan.
