Bristol Rovers duo Kamil Conteh and Michael Forbes have both received international call-ups to Sierra Leone and Northern Ireland Under-21s respectively ahead of the first international break of the new season.
Conteh, who has been capped by Sierra Leone nine times, is expected to play a part in the start of his country's Africa Cup on Nations Qualifying campaign with a home game against Chad this Friday (September 6th) before travelling to Zambia next Tuesday (September 10th). The Leone Stars are in Group G with the Ivory Coast the other nation they will face in qualifying.
The tournament itself is set to be played between December 2025 and January 2026 in Morocco. Sierra Leone haven't qualified for AFCON since the 1996 tournament and have also never made it to a World Cup finals.
As well as Conteh, there are a couple of other League One players who represent Sierra Leone, including Huddersfield Town forward Josh Koroma, Charlton Athletic striker Daniel Kanu and Cambridge United winger Sullay Kaikai.
The midfielder has started the new season strongly for the Gas, playing 100 per cent of their League One minutes so far while being a significant presence in the middle of the park.
Meanwhile, Forbes' Northern Ireland Under-21s face England and Ukraine at Ballymena Showgrounds in Euro 2025 qualifying. The Green and White Army have collected six points from their first six games, making qualifying automatically now unobtainable but qualifying via the play-off route is still possible.
The West Ham United loanee has impressed in the limited number of displays he's had in a Rovers shirt, coming off the bench in the opening league game against Northampton Town before getting starts in cup matches against Cardiff City and Tottenham Hotspur Under-21s. However, the centre-back has missed out on the matchday 18 for the last three league outings with there currently serious competition at the back with Taylor Moore, James Wilson, Clinton Mola and Connor Taylor all ahead of the 20-year-old in the pecking order.
Although the Gas will have two internationals away on duty, it currently appears as though their trip to Barnsley this weekend will go ahead, although there is yet to be any official confirmation.
EFL rules state that clubs can request for a fixture to be postponed if they have three or more players called up for international duty so a late postponement would only happen if Barnsley were to have said amount of players called up and then make a postponement request, although it would be considerably late.
As things stand, only three games originally scheduled are set to be on with Charlton vs Rotherham United and Wrexham vs Shrewsbury Town the other two fixtures. The Sky Sports website also has all three fixtures listed as games set to be broadcast on Sky Sports Plus, although the kick-off times remain 3pm.
