I think a number of issues are running concurrently:
Lack of confidence bred by poor performances & results - leading to more of the same
Basic tactical mistake in how we set-up last night: even if playing long balls over the top was the correct strategy v Reading (and it wasn't), then why was Jevani Brown selected as the de-facto 9? (Or even McCormick?) That doesn't play to their strengths. I'd have expected Taylor to know this already having managed Brown at Exeter.
Confused internal messaging (alluded to by Taylor in the post-match interview): tactical changes he wants to make relative to approach under previous manager. Yes, this applies to many clubs when managers change. However, I think the issue for us is particularly acute such was the force of personality exerted over the whole club (let alone squad) by the previous incumbent. As time progresses, I think we'll come to understand that the team under JB played through FEAR rather than togetherness - hence the mental "fragility" identified by Taylor, which he's trying to work on.
The elephant in the room: our ATROCIOUS HOME FORM OVER THE LAST 5 YEARS. Most fans watch home games. Here are our home League ONE stats since 2018 / 19: Season 18 / 19: Won 6 Draw 6 Lost 11 F 24 A 28 19 / 20: Won 7 Draw 6 Lost 5 F 23 A 19 20 / 21: Won 7 Draw 2 Lost 14 F 23 A 32 22 / 23: Won: 6 Draw 7 Lost 10 F 27 A 36 23 / 24: Won: 7 Draw 6 Lost 8 F 26 A 27
Total: Played: 108 Won: 33 Draw: 27 Lost: 48 F: 123 A: 142
We've lost almost 50% of our League One home games in the last 5 years and struggle to score. We don't press teams from the off (and did so relatively rarely under JB, despite the myth to the contrary). The question is why? How does it change?
I think it's this slow drip effect of poor home form over a protracted period that has led to the frustration so many people feel.

Interesting comparison Phil. So on that principal, for those saying JB was better than MT, that is not born out by the above stats. In effect, not a lot between them, with MT yet to get his own squad. We need to get back to the days of Fortress Twerton and make the Mem a place to fear to come, not the soft touch that we have become.
Also on those stats its amazing that the crowds haven't fallen even further.....

Too few employees over recent years with any fire in their belly , that’s the way it has appeared to me.

I'm not happy with results, of course. My threshold remains to win more than we lose in all competitions (overall) from the third division, and to build and struggle for a second division future. No rush. After a promising start, Taylor's not achieving that, and I'm disappointed by it. But I am delighted to be shot of his predecessor, and Taylor seems a decent manager worth sticking with. Start winning again, and all will be fine by me. Start building a positive record, and I'll be glad. Entertain paying gasheads. Carry on. Joey B***** football manager, was all in on passion for Bristol Rovers, wanting to take us to the Championship, and it worked out pretty well bouncing us back straightaway after relegation from insane recruitment under a clueless regime, once Joey had wrestled control of transfers and gave the team a backbone. We all have to admit, it was Joey B***** controversial celebrity who was sacked, as Joey B***** Football Manager was better option for taking us to the Championship than Taylor and host of other managers destined now to also get sacked after Taylor for failing on the pitch in the coming years. We will struggle for years now to land another decent football manager capable of taking us up. I would suggest totally ignore interviews and pressers by our new managers, completely ignore how they talk the game, focus instead on and judge them only on how composed and organised the team looks in games, is there a backbone to the side, is the press effective and can we turn over ball and get it back, how smooth transition out of possession to different shape in possession. Will not agree that Barton would take the club further up the pyramid. If he did expect ee would be bust. In the end he was not the great manager/coach he told us he was. Unfortunately some believed him. I always tried to look at him just in his role as manager but, in my opinion, he was not very good.

I don't know what to make of Taylor's strategy or football philosophy. It's like watching a slowly deflating balloon. Having said that, without Collins and his darting runs into the box our aging forwards have lost their sparkle. He didn't need to score that many because he caused enough chaos for them to utilize and created space for them to work in. This benefitted Scott Sinclair immensely when cutting in from the flanks. Now he looks like Jack Grealish in compression stockings. When there's no sparkle up front, the wheels fall off and it saps energy from the players and the fans. Asking Martin to get back and defend more is absurd imo. We can't score, teams know this and get more men forward. But hey, we made "a cool" 750 grand.

I really dislike going to home games now as we inevitably struggle to a dismal 1-0 defeat against sides we should routinely knock over with dire back foot football. I almost totally go to away games now but only to grounds I’ve not been to before. The away days are much more enjoyable and the performances have generally been better. You are spot on that we don’t get at teams like we used to in the 80’s and 90’s and so at home especially it is a turgid watch. Stevenage are a good example of doing this. At their place they bullied us from the off and could have been 5 or 6 goals to the good before we got into the game and worked out how to counter them. They reminded me a lot of a David Williams or Gerry Mk1 team and I enjoyed seeing them do that . Barton’s track record proves he is a s**t football manager

It's interesting to see those home stats by Phil highlighted a consistent trend of a poor return at home and utter frustration and spoiling the enjoyment of the majority of our fan base.

Apologies, more Matt Taylor stats:
Exeter City P 223 W 99 D 67 L 60 Win% 43.61
Rotherham P 55 W 10 D 18 L 27 Win% 18.18
Bristol Rovers. P 28 W 9 D 4 L 15 Win% 32.12
Recent Form P. 8. W 1. D 2. L. 5. Win%. 12.50. Made worst goals scored 1. goals conceded 14.
Conclusion- No idea but with his arms crossed and moving side to side it could be in his mind, that he’s cradling a large imaginary money bag for when the ‘fat lady sings’

So how does it normally work out of interests? If a manager gets "sacked" does he usually get the whole of his contract paid up? So for example has a 3 year contract, gets sacked after 6 months, he walks away with a 2 1/2 year worth of lump sum? Or he gets a pay off but not so large? Just interested to know

The question is whether MT is accountable for the team performances or whether it is a combination of the players and other outside influences. I don't know. My gut instinct is that most managers would struggle motivating a team of outgoing players based in merseyside involved in a secret whatsapp group run by Barton.
I hope there's a plan to recruit (and develop) players to MT's playing style and culture. I'm backing MT.

These conspiracy theories, Joey barton working surreptitiously behind the scenes to influence the players. If he was such a bad man management bloke and a bully to boot whilst he was with the GAS, why would any player work, under his influence, to undermine the current .manager ?

I’m all for giving him time to assemble his own team , but I’ve got that horrible feeling it won’t work & we will end up with the same scenario a month / two into the new season with a load of players the new / next manager won’t want Glad I’m not the man who’s got to make the decision what to do .

True, but comparing how Chelsea and other PL clubs do business and how BRFC and lower league clubs do theirs isn't a good comparison. Light years difference. UTG!
