'We want to play' - Bristol Rovers boss relishing Barnsley opportunity amid international break..By Daniel Hargravesi2-prod.bristolpost.co.uk/incoming/article9533477.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_PPA_Bristol_Rovers_v_Cambridge_United_310824_052.jpgMatt Taylor has described Bristol Rovers' trip to Barnsley this weekend as a "great opportunity" with the pair two of just six League One clubs in action this weekend due to postponements throughout the division amid international call-ups. Rovers' game at Oakwell, Wrexham vs Shrewsbury Town and Charlton Athletic vs Rotherham United are the only surviving fixtures in the third tier as the scheduled international break, which sees all teams in the Premier League and Championship off duty for a fortnight, has meant that rosters have been left hit with an increasing number of international players competing in League One. Admittedly, that tends to come in the form of young loanees featuring for their nation's respective youth sides with the Gas having England youth internationals in the form of Jed Ward and Matt Cox last season as well as Brandon Aguilera and Elkan Baggott who represented Costa Rica and Indonesia respectively. Rovers will have two absentees in the form of Kamil Conteh and Michael Forbes this weekend who are on duty with Sierra Leone and Northern Ireland Under-21s respectively but the EFL only allows postponements to be requested if three or more players are called up for internationals. However, Taylor is adamant that his camp are pleased the game is going ahead. "We maybe expected not to have a fixture this weekend but it became apparent quite early on that we had two and I think Barnsley had two or three in the same situation on standby," the Rovers managed admitted ahead of Saturday's game in South Yorkshire. "We want to play. We’re looking forward to it. I just see it as a great opportunity, probably for both teams, to put more points on the board and I know it will be a game more we would have played than the majority of the league table but get up the league as early as possible and get points on the board. "Always when there are no other games elsewhere other than the international ones then it will be well-attended, there will be more people there from a scouting opposition perspective so a good one for players to impress and I want the club to impress this weekend." After missing out on a place in the play-off final to Bolton Wanderers last season, having narrowly lost to Sheffield Wednesday in the final the campaign prior, it's no secret that Barnsley will once again be targeting promotion this term and therefore represent one of the toughest opponents in an already fiercely competitive division. They are now under the management of a very familiar face down in BS7 in the form of Darrell Clarke who left Cheltenham Town to take up the vacancy at Oakwell over the summer following the Robins' relegation to League Two. Clarke, who led Rovers to back-to-back promotions from the National League to League One as manager, will always be seen as a legend amongst Gasheads but, of course, come Saturday it will be strictly professional. However, being a familiar face not just to the Gas but in League One and League Two having also managed the likes of Port Vale and Walsall, you know what you're going to get from a Darrell Clarke team with Taylor saying on this weekend's opponents: "A play-off team at this level, pushing the top echelons of the league. A strong team managed by someone we’re quite familiar with as a club, I know Darrell pretty well myself so he really suits what Barnsley are as a football club. "We went there last season and we weren’t quite ready for the start of the game and almost played catch up in that game. We can’t allow for that to happen this time around. "They’re coming into it on the back of good results as well. They were 3-0 up at half-time against Crawley and it could have been a lot more than that. They’ve had a good couple of cup results so they’re on a high." i2-prod.bristolpost.co.uk/incoming/article9523062.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_PPA_Bristol_Rovers_v_Cambridge_United_310824_042.jpgThat match the Rovers manager referred to was a 2-1 defeat at Oakwell in January where the Gas squandered a number of good chances and, despite equalising via one of Chris Martin's 16 league goals last season, a 73rd minute winner from Corey O'Keefe condemned the Gas to defeat. It was a game that represented what became a common trend last term in the form of being in the game but not getting the rewards from any pressure or momentum and, on the back of taking seven points from their opening four games with three clean sheets to their name too, Rovers will no doubt go into the contest confident while also being wary of the quality of their hosts. "I think it’s going to be a fantastic game of football," Taylor added. "Good time to go, good pitch, big pitch. There will be space but then, as always when you’re away from home, you’ve got to earn the space and then you can capitalise on it, something we’ve not done quite yet away from home. "We don’t want all the pressure to be on our home form. We want to leave with some good results away from home. We’ve threatened without quite getting the goals and results on board away from home so we’re really looking forward to this weekend. "Like I say, it’s got probably a big exposure to the outside world and hopefully on the back of our result last week and Barnsley’s result it will be a well-attended game."

'To the wire' - Matt Taylor sees the positives despite Bristol Rovers' defeat at Barnsley..By Daniel Hargraves
Bristol Rovers were beaten 2-1 at Barnsley on Saturday afternoon having had good chances to score more than one goali2-prod.bristolpost.co.uk/incoming/article9538006.ece/ALTERNATES/s1176b/0_JS344506425.jpgMatt Taylor has claimed that his Bristol Rovers side took a play-off team in Barnsley to the wire as they were beaten 2-1 at Oakwell on Saturday afternoon. The hosts started the much stronger of the two outfits and got their rewards as debutant Davis Keillor-Dunn fired past Josh Griffiths to hand the Reds the lead with the goalkeeper called upon on a couple of occasions to keep the scoreline down. However, Rovers started to grow into the game and found their equaliser late in the half as Ruel Sotiriou capitalised on an error in the Barnsley back line to take the ball around goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina and slot home into an empty net for his first Gas goal. The visitors started the second half the better of the two sides too but fell to defeat as Adam Phillips headed home a cross in the 65th minute. "We’ve took a play-off team to the wire, if not more today," Taylor said post-match. "There’s not much in that game. They were the better team for the first 20 minutes but from that point on I was really pleased with our performance. "We have to understand where they are. They had a little bit more nous and experience on that pitch than us. A few more league minutes, so to speak. We’ve got to improve certain aspects. We’re a fit team but we do get gassed sometimes, we do blow our legs, so you’ve got to effect it from the bench, of course you have. But I want that to happen at a later stage in the game. "I thought it was a really good game of football," the Gas manager added. "Two teams who really went at each other. They started better than we did. We were second best in too many areas to start the game in terms of our speed of thought into our speed of movement so we had to chase the first 20 minutes of the game. "But from that point on I thought we improved, controlled the better side of the footballing aspect but there’s always a physical approach which we never got a handle on all day." Rovers did have a golden opportunity to take the lead as a Bryant Bilongo cross was misread by a Barnsley defender and headed into the path of Promise Omochere, who couldn't convert from close range having scored his first two goals for the Gas last weekend. "With the way the second half started I thought we were in a really good position in the game and if we go ahead in that moment then the game looks totally different," Taylor said. "But it wasn’t to be. If we play like we did bar the first 20 minutes more often than that I think we’ll be okay away from home this season." The defeat keeps Rovers on seven points from five league matches with Taylor's men hosting Wigan Athletic next weekend, going into the clash with a perfect home record so far.

Matt Taylor discusses Bristol Rovers' start, home comforts and facing 'monster' Wigan Athletic..By Daniel Hargraves
Bristol Rovers have won both of their home games in League One so far this season without conceding ahead of hosting Wigan Athletic on Saturdayi2-prod.bristolpost.co.uk/incoming/article9549861.ece/ALTERNATES/s1176b/0_JS344506286.jpgMatt Taylor has labelled his Bristol Rovers side's start to the League One season as "solid" after taking seven points from their opening five games while also calling for their home comforts to continue this weekend against Wigan Athletic. So far, the Gas have won twice, drawn once and lost twice in the league alongside a Carabao Cup exit at the hands of Championship side Cardiff City and a 3-3 draw in the EFL Trophy with Tottenham Hotspur Under-21s, who took an extra point after winning the eventual penalty shootout. Last time out Rovers were one of just six teams in the third tier that saw their matches go ahead amid the international break as they lost 2-1 away at Barnsley in a game that went down to the wire. Following a dominant start from the hosts which saw Davis Keillor-Dunn fire home an early goal on his debut alongside a number of missed opportunities, the Gas found their stride, equalising through Ruel Sotiriou while having good chances either side of Adam Phillips' second half winner. "Going into last weekend I thought we’d had a good start," Taylor declared ahead of this weekend. "A win would have turned it into a great start. The defeat has probably made it a solid start. "That was a close game. We could be sat here saying we’ve had a great start or still a good start with maybe a draw. We’ve not been too far away in relation to that. "We’ve probably beaten a couple of teams at home that, if we look at the league table starting to shape up, you might hope and, not expect because you never expect to win a game of football, but expect to be on top of in terms of point return but then we’ve had some real tough tests away from home. We’ve been in each of those games and it’s been close but we’ve not come away with enough points. "We’re trying to find the right balance. In a few games time we’ll be close to that double-figure mark where you start to get a little bit of a pattern of where you think your team will be." Alongside clear areas for improvement, there have been a number of positives to take from the opening handful of matches, especially considering the fact that this new-look side are still early into their infancy. One of the biggest takeaways has been Rovers' improved home form with maximum points thus far and no goals conceded. To suggest that the 1-0 win over Northampton Town and the 2-0 success over Cambridge United were comfortable wins is a slight stretch, especially considering that the former was won thanks to a 92nd minute winner from Bryant Bilongo. However, the hosts were solid throughout in both matches and always looked as though they would come away from both with a point at the very least. i2-prod.bristolpost.co.uk/incoming/article9549872.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200e/0_PPAUK_Bristol_Rovers_v_Northampton_Town-_090824_053JPG.jpgIt's a welcome improvement on last season's home form, in fact, traditionally the Gas haven't been overly impressive on their own turf in recent campaigns. Prior to the start of this term, Rovers had won just three home games in 2024 against Oxford United, Carlisle United and Cambridge United while losing nine with torrid defeats to the likes of Fleetwood Town, Exeter City and Burton Albion in that mix. On the importance of maintaining strong form at The Mem, Taylor said: "I think for the team and for the fans. The fans, if they see a certain brand of football which is uncomfortable for the opposition and results are always dependant on certain moments in games but putting the opposition under pressure and playing a certain style and then for our team and for a lot of the new players and certainly a lot of the young ones, having a bit of a comfort in their home form. "I’ve always felt the best teams I’ve ever managed have had a comfort in their home form and a trust in it because generally, you lose the odd game here and there, but there’s a consistency to it. So that’s certainly what we’re looking for. "We’ve had a couple of good performances at home. This weekend will be a different test and a harder test but one for us to look forward to and we should always look forward to our home games. But I think maybe the history of Bristol Rovers and certainly possibly last season when home form left us, people, and players especially which is what you don’t want, don’t overly look forward to playing at home. They should be desperate to play in front of their supporters and play with their home comforts of that support network of 10,000 Gasheads going mad for the team." This weekend Rovers host a Wigan side that have endured an underwhelming start to the campaign with one win and three defeats in the league alongside an early Carabao Cup exit to Barnsley and an EFL Trophy loss at home to League Two Morecambe. However, the Latics have had a particularly tough early schedule with games against Charlton Athletic and Birmingham City as well as a trip to Reading and, although they're yet to hit their stride, Wigan remain one of the biggest clubs in the division having boasted Premier League status while lifting the FA Cup as recently as 2013. The two teams faced off at the DW Stadium on the final day of last season as Shaun Maloney's side cruised to a 2-0 defeat against a Rovers side desperate to see the back end of that campaign. As expected, Taylor is hoping that this weekend proves to be a polar opposite to that afternoon. "Yeah, we hope so," the Gas manager responded when asked if he expects a completely different game to last season's final day. "That was the end of what had been a painful time. There’s no more painful moment than when you know your team aren’t where they need to be. Hopefully they can put on a performance where our fans enjoy it and we get the points off the back of it. "But Wigan are still a monster at this level. An ex-Premier League club. Fantastic set of players. They’ve probably not had the start to the season they’d have liked but they’ve got some serious quality on the pitch there. "A game of heightened quality I think is fair to say in terms of what our supporters have seen so far at The Mem and we’ll have to be at our best."

Baffling how MT thought our performance at Barnsley was good enough when we could have quite easily lost 4-1, no wonder players performed like they did yesterday if they thought MT was happy with their performance in the last match.

Morning Droitwich. That's what worries me the most, either he is trying to puff his players up and be positive about what they did well or he genuinely says what he sees (Like Catchphrase). From the reports, stats and highlights and what I managed to see of the game we didn't lay a glove on Barnsley apart from an unfortunate error on their behalf. We have got 2 first teams on paper yet people who don't perform dont get dropped. Also a concern.

We struggled, or laboured, against mediochre opposition in them. I can understand he has to put a positive spin on things, but there are limits. Ok, give him more time, etc.,but I don't see it getting much better for quite a while. Avoiding relegation will probably be an achievement.

I honestly don't see any hope in achieving anything with him as a manager in charge of us. He for me is a sitting duck until we will need to release him in 6 months, or next season as we sadly seem committed to him. Ive got no problem sticking with a manager if you can see progress. With him, I see none.I think we have signed some talented players, but I have zero faith in him as a leader or manager. It's like being in a loveless relationship just waiting for the end and it's going to be painful. Nice guy, I think try's his best but it's not, and will not work under him.

We don't attack, we don't play good football, and we are not getting results. I like what the club is trying to do in regards to signing younger players on long contracts, in order to develop and win promotion, or at very least to sell on for profit. I don't think that is anything to do with Matt Taylor tho.

Problem is we tied that under BG and that ended in relegation, whilst we seem to have spent more this season we don't really seem to have any real leaders on the pitch. Whilst Sinclair may be a true pro he's hardly vocal nor leads by example when he's on the pitch, likewise Wilson, Moore looked a potential leader until the red mist got to him on Saturday.
It's baffling why we didn't sign a Craig or Elliot type leader for the defence or a Finley for midfield. Surely experience pros like GF &T must realise every teams needs a couple of experienced pros.

We are listening to the same drivel from MT as we have from so many of our previous managers,in my opinion we have zero chance of progressing under his leadership, unfortunately our new owners are as clueless and should stick to what they know which is property development.

I think we have to give him a little bit more time. It's almost a complete new team so a bit of bedding in time should be expected. The conference season we started terribly but eventually got going. I don't how long Taylor should be given though, too long and the season is no longer salvageable. I don't think he's a particularly good manager and seemed an odd choice in the first place to me. But there you go.

Matt Taylor assesses Bristol Rovers' goalkeeping 'balance' after Jed Ward's strong start on loan..By Daniel Hargraves
Jed Ward has begun his loan spell at Forest Green Rovers magnificently while Josh Griffiths has majorly impressed at Bristol Roversi2-prod.bristolpost.co.uk/incoming/article9558158.ece/ALTERNATES/s1176b/0_JS327596409.jpgMatt Taylor has revealed that Bristol Rovers are still keeping strong tabs on Jed Ward's development away from the club on loan at Forest Green Rovers with the young goalkeeper enjoying a fantastic start to his season at The New Lawn. The 21-year-old has played every minute of Forest Green's National League campaign so far with Steve Cotterill's side second in the fifth tier having been named pre-season favourites for promotion on the back of consecutive relegations, keeping four clean sheets in nine appearances. Ward has received widespread praise from many affiliated with the Gloucestershire outfit, particularly after the Rovers academy product produced penalty saves against both Boston United and Solihull Moors. He also played a huge part in creating Forest Green's late winner against Sutton United, pinging an outstanding long-range pass on the half-volley to a teammate whose eventual cross set up the clinching goal. The decision to send the 21-year-old out on loan was initially met with sceptisism from many Gasheads on the back of Ward coming into the Gas first-team last season in the second half of the campaign and seriously impressing. However, the idea of this loan is to allow the academy product to continue his development while playing as close to 46 league games as possible and the early signs suggest that the decision will pay off. Asked about keeping watch on Ward's performances from afar last week, Taylor told BBC Radio Bristol: "Scott [Brown] was at his game on Tuesday. He's been to a couple of his games. We've watched a lot of footage and we expect Jed to perform well there. We expect him to be in one of, if not the top team at that level and great he's getting those reviews. "The balance that we've got at the moment with Josh Griffiths performing well for ourselves and Jed getting the experience elsewhere. Last season was a year ahead of where we expected Jed to be so this season's massive in terms of his loan experience, his loan exposure. That's great but you've still got to perform as a footballer so great that those reviews are coming through to us." Rovers' goalkeeping department has been a frequent topic of conversations amongst supporters with West Brom loanee Griffiths, who has essentially come in to be the Gas' first-choice before Ward returns from his loan, looking set to be amongst the league's best shot stoppers this term, regardless of his mistake on the weekend. The 23-year-old was at fault for Wigan Athletic's third goal in a 4-0 drubbing at The Mem on Saturday, spilling a cross to allow Thelo Aasgaard to tap home but has largely been outstanding with Taylor labelling the goalkeeper as Rovers' best player in the early stages of the campaign. However, he's top of the League One charts for saves made with 23 and his three clean sheets is joint-third in the division. Griffiths also led the way in the third tier for goals prevented prior to the Barnsley and Wigan defeats. With Ward signing a four-year contract in March, the plan very much seems to be that the 21-year-old will return to BS7 with another season's worth of experience and reclaim his first-choice credentials at the Gas. He also earned his first caps for England Under-20s over the summer with the goalkeeper's stock on an upward trajectory. Elsewhere, concerns over the risk of not including a goalkeeper on the bench in every league game since the opening day have been expressed with Taylor stating publicly that he doesn't yet feel Matt Hall is at the level to play League One football if called upon. The Rovers manager has admitted that the Gas are assessing the free agent market for a shot stopper to bridge the gap between Griffiths and Hall which seems to be gaping. Assuming Rovers do bring in a currently unattached shot stopper to provide support, the 'keeper's profile will be particularly interesting as the solution would initially seem to be short-term but a more experienced profile could prove to not only be decent support for Griffiths but also Ward upon his return should the Gas keep them on beyond this season. i2-prod.bristolpost.co.uk/incoming/article9207979.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_GettyImages-2018457784.jpg

Do you disagree with my little summary?

Do you disagree with my little summary? I assume a good engine meant a box to box midfield player, not pacy wingers, who really just run around in short bursts. Whatever he's built doesn't seem to be working! Personally I think he's way out of his depth as I can't see he's built a squad that can compete in L1.
