Report By Shamoon Hafez, BBC Sport at Goodison Park
Marco Silva hailed "special player" Tosin Adarabioyo after the defender scored the winning spot-kick as Fulham beat Everton on penalties to reach the Carabao Cup semi-finals for the first time. Centre-back Tosin stepped up in sudden death, after Idrissa Gueye struck the post, and rolled home to send the Cottagers through to a first domestic semi-final in 22 seasons. Silva's men had a smash-and-grab win at Goodison Park in the opening game of the season and they went home to London victorious once again. "He is a key player for us, one of the leaders in our dressing room and we need them to step in," said Fulham boss Silva. "He didn't play the first three months of the season, but he is a special player for us. He can defend the box and on the ball he builds the way I want him to. "He is getting better and better and a great performance tonight. To be able to take the decisive penalty, he deserves all the credit." The opener came four minutes before half-time and went down as a Michael Keane own goal, with the Everton defender diverting the ball into his own net from Antonee Robinson's cross. The hosts could have hit back immediately but James Tarkowski was unable to get enough of a firm connection on James Garner's free-kick and flicked his headed effort narrowly off target. Everton searched for an equaliser in the second period and Jack Harrison fizzed a long-range drive just wide before substitute Beto headed in from close range with nine minutes remaining. The game went to penalties, with Bobby De Cordova-Reid seeing his effort saved by Jordan Pickford and Amadou Onana's having a weak effort kept out by Bernd Leno, before Tosin sent the travelling fans into raptures. The draw for the semi-finals takes place on Wednesday, with the first leg of those ties being played in the week commencing 8th January. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/12/19/452dcc46-df12-4f97-9ed3-674f38b20059.jpg

ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/B715/production/_132096864_gettyimages-1860789333.jpg Callum Wilson's goal was his eighth of the season in all competitionsReport By Phil McNulty, Chief football writer at Stamford Bridge Newcastle United's Kieran Trippier endured a Stamford Bridge nightmare as Chelsea reached the Carabao Cup semi-finals after a penalty shootout. Callum Wilson's 16th-minute goal looked to be sending Newcastle into the last four until substitute Mykhailo Mudryk pounced on the veteran defender's error deep into stoppage time to send the game to spot-kicks. The 33-year-old, who has suffered a dip in form recently, then fired Newcastle's second penalty wide and once keeper Djordje Petrovic saved Matt Ritchie's spot-kick Chelsea had gone from the despair of contemplating defeat to the sheer elation of a place in the last four. It was cruel on Trippier, such an influential figure under manager Eddie Howe, but his fatal indecision on a header gave Chelsea that lifeline which Mudryk gratefully accepted. Cole Palmer, Conor Gallagher, Christopher Nkunku and Mudryk were all on target for Chelsea but only Callum Wilson and Bruno Guimaraes scored penalties for Newcastle, who suffered fresh disappointment after their Champions League exit. The draw for the semi-finals takes place after Liverpool v West Ham on Wednesday, with the first leg of those ties being played in the week commencing 8 January. Following Mudryk's equaliser a male Chelsea fan climbed over the advertising hoardings before celebrating in the face of and bumping into Newcastle goalkeeper Martin Dubravka. The fan was then led back into the crowd with referee Jarred Gillet speaking to stadium security before the shootout began. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/EAAF/production/_132097006_gettyimages-1868264372.jpgChristopher Nkunku scored his penalty in the shootout after coming off the bench to make his Chelsea debut

WEDNESDAY 20th DECEMBER 2023 - EFL CUP - QUARTER-FINALS
Liverpool 5 (Szoboszlai 28, Jones 56, 84, Gakpo 71, Salah 82) West Ham United 1 (Bowen 77)ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/1440/cpsprodpb/158D4/production/_132067288_gettyimages-1813805690.jpgLiverpool cruised into the Carabao Cup semi-finals with a dominant performance against West Ham at Anfield. Once Dominik Szoboszlai had driven a superb 25-yard effort into the bottom corner after 28 minutes, Liverpool's place in the last four was never in doubt. Curtis Jones added a second 11 minutes after the restart when he deceived Alphonse Areola into thinking he was going to cut a cross back from the edge of the six-yard box, and instead drove a shot through the Hammers' keeper's legs. Cody Gakpo was given too much space to fire home his eighth goal of the season 19 minutes from time, then Mohamed Salah made it four when he raced clear of the visitors defence and finished, before Jones finished off an excellent run by adding his second. There could have been more as the excellent Harvey Elliott, Gakpo and substitute Trent Alexander-Arnold all went close and Salah put the rebound wide of an empty net after Areola had touched a Darwin Nunez shot on to a post. It was the first time Liverpool had scored five at home against the Hammers since 1998 and keeps them on course for a record-extending 10th triumph in the competition they last won as recently as 2022. They will face Fulham in the semi-finals, with the first leg in the week beginning 8 January and the second leg two weeks later. For Hammers boss David Moyes, it was a disappointing night. The former Everton boss is still waiting for his first victory in this stadium after 21 visits and Jarrod Bowen's 77th-minute goal with West Ham's first shot on target was scant consolation. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/AA32/production/_132107534_gettyimages-1870657456.jpgLiverpool's second goal from Curtis Jones was their 500th in the competition

Michael Carrick: Middlesbrough out to enjoy Carabao Cup semi-final experienceichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/607B/production/_132099642_gettyimages-1860791569.jpgMiddlesbrough will look to enjoy their Carabao Cup semi-final experience after making the last four as a Championship club, says boss Michael Carrick. It is nearly 20 years since Boro won the competition in 2004 for their only major trophy, under Steve McClaren. "You want to try to achieve things," Carrick told BBC Radio Tees. "For anyone in football, for the fans as well to have that journey and that bit of spark and excitement - that passion - sometimes football can be a beautiful thing. "Cup competitions throw up that, we're in it to see how far we can go and we'll enjoy it as long as it lasts." Bradford were the last side from outside the top flight to reach the final, when they lost to Swansea in 2013 as a League Two club, while Brentford in 2021 were the last non-Premier League club in the last-four phase. Middlesbrough 1 (Hackney 37) Chelsea 0Chelsea missed a host of chances as Championship side Middlesbrough earned a slender advantage in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final at a boisterous Riverside Stadium. Hayden Hackney scored the only goal, opening up his body to slide home an Isaiah Jones cross in the first half. Cole Palmer missed three presentable opportunities as Chelsea failed to score for the sixth time this season. The second leg takes place on Tuesday 23rd January at 7.45pm. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/B122/production/_132264354_3060e0f83c81d3d1f22e5296abb921ee23e436de.jpgHayden Hackney's goal was just his second of the season in all competitionsMiddlesbrough captain Jonny Howson, speaking to Sky Sports, said: "These opportunities don't come around too often, it's the first time in my career. You have to make the most of it, give it your all, your best shot and see what happens." Goalscorer Hayden Hackney said: "We stuck to the plan and tried to keep it tight and catch them on the counter. It was a great ball, I just got on the end of it. "I think we did really well tonight, but it's a completely different game away from home. We will give it our best shot." Middlesbrough's Isaiah Jones, named player of the match, speaking to Sky Sports, said: "Very special. A good performance from the team and solid defensively. We scored a goal but it's only half-time and we still have to go to their place and get the job done. "The crowd were our 12th man. We have a lot of belief and we go with a 1-0 lead. We played Aston Villa and only lost in the last five minutes so we have lost to a Premier League team and beaten a Premier League team. Hopefully we can go there and get to Wembley. "I enjoyed it. I love to test myself, it was a good challenge and I rose to the occasion." Ali: You can’t go to a Championship club and not play a striker. Completely handcuffed our best player this season (Cole Palmer) and then took off our most creative players (Enzo Fernandes and Noni Madueke) when we needed them to break down a deep lying defence. He’s a good manager, but Poch has had a stinker tonight. Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "It is difficult to talk about our performance. We made some mistakes where we was punished and they scored. "It was difficult to breakdown and we created some chances, but we were not clinical enough. "Now we need to think for Fulham [on Saturday] and then prepare for the second leg." On Cole Palmer: "Good chances to score, but it can happen - we were not clinical enough. "This first half of the season we have created some chances, but we have not won because we were not clinical enough - we must keep pushing." On the second leg: "The frustration is we are disappointed. We have 90 minutes at Stamford Bridge and we will be positive in two weeks' time where we can change the reality." Match Stats: Middlesbrough 1 Chelsea 0 - Possession: 28% - 72% - Shots: 6-18 - On Target: 2-5 - Corners: 1-6 - Referee: Samuel Barrott

WEDNESDAY 10th JANUARY 2024 - EFL CUP - SEMI-FINALS - 1ST LEG
Liverpool 2 (Jones 68, Gakpo 71) Fulham 1 (Willian 19)ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/5F11/production/_132273342_liverpool.jpgCody Gakpo scored the 2nd goal in the victory over Fulham at AnfieldLiverpool staged a second-half turnaround to beat Fulham at Anfield in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final tie. The visitors had taken the lead in the first half when Willian showed great control inside the area to slot in. It was no less than Fulham deserved after an impressive first half, but Liverpool stepped it up after the break and fought back with two goals in three minutes. First, Curtis Jones equalised when his 68th-minute strike from distance took a big deflection off Tosin Adarabioyo to wrong-foot Bernd Leno in the Fulham goal. Substitute Cody Gakpo then drove in a Darwin Nunez pull-back to send the home crowd wild. The two sides will meet again in the second leg at Craven Cottage on Wednesday, 24th January, with Jurgen Klopp's men now in the driving seat as they look to keep alive their hopes of a record-extending 10th League Cup win. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/10/5d1ec2b2-65cf-41da-94d8-ad1610e48fec.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/1/10/a14495dc-4798-4850-aa77-601afb07b944.jpg19 mins - GOAL - Liverpool 0-1 Fulham - Willian

FULL-TIME - Liverpool 2-1 FulhamMan of the Match Curtis Jones, speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live: "It was an enjoyable evening. The first half was a tough game, we had most of the ball, we dominated, but we couldn't score. In the second half we turned that around, we scored two good goals and dominated again. So good game all round." On if it has been a special week in the cups: "Yeah definitely. It is one of those things that there are plenty of games coming round, we are making changes to the team but we are still getting the job done. So happy days." On getting a good run in the team: "It is benefitting me loads. The important thing is that I keep it up. My chance is there, so it is on me now [to perform]." On the second leg: "It is always a tough task until the end in all games. We're going there with a lead but the tie isn't over, so we'll see on the day." Goalscorer Curtis Jones, speaking to Sky Sports, said: "In the first half it was tough, we had all the ball but couldn't find the back of the net and in the second half we changed that around. The fans are leaving with smiles on their faces so I'm happy. "I came all the way through the academy so it [scoring] means more. I've been around the team since I was 17 and the journey has been up and down. "It has not always been easy but I've always stuck in there, my mindset is right, I know I have the ability and I just need the game time." Goalscorer Cody Gakpo, speaking to Sky Sports, said: "He [Curtis Jones] got a very important goal to get us back in the game and after that I felt we really dominated, not only with possession but creating chances and then the second so I was happy. "It's the mentality in the group, in the club, in the city, everyone is like this mentality of just keep going and it doesn't matter what happens and we showed that again today. If you have that mentality a lot of things can happen. "I love playing with these guys. We showed good mentality and have to keep going as it's only the first leg of this game." Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was super tough. First half we caused ourselves some problems. They were really compact defending and we had to change at half-time and the boys did really well. "They had big counter-attacking chances, then we were dominant, we scored and everything was fine. It's not the best game we've ever played but we're human beings. "It was always too slow and we had to change it. It was then a good game and the crowd were there all the time for us, we just didn't give them a lot to cheer about. but in the second half it was a proper, proper Liverpool performance. "Fulham are a really good team. Can you play pretty offensively against us? No, then we hit you on the counter attack. It will be an open game and we want to go to the final and if we do a really good game against Fulham and a good result we will. If not, congratulations to Fulham and they go to the final." On the performance of Conor Bradley, Klopp added: "Exceptional, what a boy, what fantastic character and the potential. He is in the right team, everyone loves him and respects him and wants him to succeed." Match Stats: Liverpool 2 Fulham 1 - Possession: 67% - 33% - Shots: 21-6 - On Target: 7-4 - Corners: 8-2 - Referee: David Coote
