France 2023: Rugby World Cup Result
Wednesday 27th September
Pool A: Uruguay 36 Namibia 26 - Second-half fightback denies Namibia first Rugby World Cup win..By Alastair Telfer, BBC Sport.ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/15BC3/production/_131272098_gettyimages-1704449760.jpgUruguay beat Namibia in Lyon to record their first pool win at the Rugby World Cup and deny the African nation a first win in the competition. Two early tries from Gerswin Mouton and JC Greyling, along with the boot of Tiaan Swanepoel, put Namibia in control at half-time. Uruguay responded in the second half through tries by Baltazar Amaya, Santiago Arata and Bautista Basso. Namibia prop Desiderius Sethie was then sent off to end any hope of history. Uruguay came into the fixture as favourites after impressing against France to deny the hosts a bonus-point win before leading at half-time against Italy. Namibia head coach Allister Coetzee rotated his squad for last week's meeting with France, which ended in a 96-0 defeat, to focus on claiming a first World Cup win for the nation on their 26th attempt in their final match at this year's tournament. The strategy appeared to be working in the opening stages, with Mouton scoring an intercept try after just a minute. But four games in 18 days for Namibia began to take its toll in the second period, as two pieces of individual magic from full-back Amaya and Arata put Uruguay ahead for the first time. The two scores came with prop Johan Coetzee in the sin bin, as discipline proved to be the African side's major downfall. Captain Tjiuee Uanivi was next to be yellow-carded before replacement Sethie saw his yellow card upgraded to a red for making direct head contact with an upright tackle. The win is Uruguay's fourth in their World Cup history, with their final game of the pool against New Zealand next Thursday. For Namibia, the wait for a first win at the tournament rolls on. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/C7B7/production/_131272115_microsoftteams-image-10.pngLine-ups Uruguay: Amaya; Basso, Perez, Vilaseca (capt), Freitas; Etcheverry, Arata; Sanguinetti, Kessler, Arbelo, Aliaga, Leindekar, Ardao, Civetta, Deus. Thursday 28th September

The two teams, along with Argentina, are likely competing for second place behind England. Samoa have not reached the knock-outs for 28 years, while Japan are seeking a second successive last-eight place. "It's exciting how wide open the pool is with all the results," Samoa assistant coach Andrew Goodman said. "Do or die is not the terminology we have used. We have talked about a performance we can be proud of." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/14057/production/_131270028_gettyimages-1173865527.jpgJapan and Samoa met in the group stages four years ago, with the Japanese winning 38-19Line-ups Japan XV: Lomano Lemeki; Kotaro Matsushima, Dylan Riley, Ryoto Nakamura, Jone Naikabula; Rikiya Matsuda, Yutaka Nagare; Keita Inagaki, Shota Horie, Jiwon Gu, Jack Cornelsen, Amato Fakatava, Michael Leitch, Pieter Labuschagne, Kazuki Himeno Replacements: Atsushi Sakate, Craig Millar, Asaeli Ai Valu, Warner Dearns, Kanji Shimokawa, Naoto Saito, Seungsin Lee, Tomoki Osada Samoa XV: Duncan Paia'aua; Ed Fidow, Tumua Manu, Alai D'Angelo Leuila, Ben Lam; Christian Leali'ifano, Jonathan Taumateine; James Lay, Seilala Lam, Paul Alo-Emile, Chris Vui, Theo McFarland, Taleni Junior Agaese Seu, Fritz Lee, Jordan Taufua Replacements: Sama Malolo, Jordan Lay, Michael Alaalatoa, Steven Luatua, Alamanda Motuga, Melani Matavao, Neria Fomai, Danny Toala Referee: Jaco Peyper Touch judges: Ben O'Keeffe, Craig Evans TMO: Marius Jonker

Japan 28-22 Samoa: Brave Blossoms' win puts England into Rugby World Cup quarter-finals..By Emma Smith, BBC Sport.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/2286/production/_131283880_gettyimages-1706510057.jpg Pieter Labuschagne went over in the 13th minute to open the scoring for JapanEngland reached the quarter-finals of the Rugby World Cup thanks to a Japan win over Samoa which boosted the Brave Blossoms' own knockout chances. Japan saw off the Pacific Islanders with tries from Pieter Labuschagne, Michael Leitch and Kazuki Himeno, along with strong kicking by Rikiya Matsuda. Samoa, who had winger Ben Lam sent off, rallied late on but must now beat England for a chance of progressing. But this result means England cannot be overtaken at the top of Pool D. Samoa can no longer match their current total of 14 points, while Steve Borthwick's men have a superior head-to-head record over Japan and Argentina. It removes the pressure from England's final pool game, against the Samoans on 7 October, and means Borthwick could rest players for that game before a likely quarter-final against Fiji. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/BEC6/production/_131283884_microsoftteams-image-7.pngBoth nations went into this game in Toulouse with a realistic chance of qualifying from Pool D - but only if they won. Japan, seeking a second successive last-eight place, started the stronger and scored from their first major attack on 13 minutes. Lomano Lemeki drove into space, bouncing off two Samoan defenders before being held up five metres out. The ball came to Labuschagne who bundled over. Following an exchange of penalties, Japan appeared to take control of the match as they scored their second try and Samoa had a man sin-binned within a matter of seconds. Jonathan Taumateine was yellow-carded for a tackle off the ball in the build-up to Leitch extending Japan's lead, as they shifted the ball out to the left again and were too quick for Samoa. This sprang Samoa - who have not reached the knockout stage in 28 years - into life. After the game was made 14-men apiece when Japan hooker Shota Horie was sin-binned, Samoa's own number two Seilala Lam touched down following a giant maul. But the Pacific Islanders were their own worst enemies. In the opening minutes of the second period, Ben Lam was given a yellow card for an upright tackle and nasty clash of heads - which was later upgraded - before Kazuki Himeno scored following a Japan maul. Samoa gave themselves hope and a losing bonus point through Duncan Paia'aua and Christian Leali'ifano tries, but Japan held out via Matsuda's reliable boot. Japan, who are aiming to repeat their performance as hosts four years ago when they reached the knockouts, face what looks likely to be a winner-takes-all meeting with Argentina on 8th October.

France 2023: Rugby World Cup Fixtures..
Friday, 29th September
Pool A: New Zealand v Italy (OL Stadium), 8pm
New Zealand v Italy: Other nations have caught up with All Blacks, says Azzurri boss Kieran Crowley..By Joe Rindl, BBC Sport.ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/04C2/production/_131281210_gettyimages-1669656438.jpgItaly head coach Kieran Crowley believes other countries "have caught up" with New Zealand as his side prepare for a crucial World Cup match against the All Blacks on Friday. The Azzurri will reach the knockout phase for the first time if they win in Lyon, while New Zealand would be on the verge of qualification with a victory. "We're not going out there trying to keep the score down, we're going out there to try to win the game," said former New Zealand full-back Crowley. "We're not going to be stupid about how we play, we are going to kick." Crowley said other nations' improvements have closed the gap on the All Blacks, who are "not more beatable". "I've never seen a bad All Black team, but world rugby at the top level now is getting very, very close because everyone's exposed to the same coaching, everyone's exposed to the same strength and conditioning and nutrition," he added. "A few years ago the All Blacks were pretty dominant. They were probably a little bit ahead of other countries in the way they approached the game, but now you see everyone has caught up." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/79F2/production/_131281213_-7d31e059-2dee-43d3-9091-b5cf51674efc.pngLine-ups New Zealand XV: Beauden Barrett; Will Jordan, Rieko Ioane, Jordie Barrett, Mark Telea; Richie Mo'unga, Aaron Smith; Ofa Tuungafasi, Codie Taylor, Nepo Laulala, Brodie Retallick, Scott Barrett, Shannon Frizell, Dalton Papali'i, Ardie Savea Replacements: Dane Coles, Tamaiti Williams, Tyrel Lomax, Samuel Whitelock, Sam Cane, Cam Roigard, Damian McKenzie, Anton Lienert-Brown Italy XV: Tommaso Allan; Ange Capuozzo, Juan Ignacio Brex, Luca Morisi, Montanna Ioane; Paolo Garbisi, Stephen Varney; Danilo Fischetti, Giacomo Nicotera, Marco Riccioni, Dino Lamb, Federico Ruzza, Sebastian Negri, Michele Lamaro, Lorenzo Cannone Replacements: Hame Faiva, Ivan Nemer, Simone Ferrari, Niccolo Cannone, Manuel Zuliani, Toa Halafihi, Martin Page-Relo, Paolo Odogwu Match officials Referee: Matthew Carley (England) Touch judges: Nic Berry, Christophe Ridley TMO: Brett Cronan

All Blacks captain Ardie Savea on BBC Radio 5 Live: "I am very grateful, to put that effort in I am very proud. "We have got talent across the board, we played some free rugby and that is how I want my boys to play. We put a lot into this week and we got the reward tonight. "I put it down to my faith, I play for the jersey and I am very grateful." Italian captain Michele Lamaro on BBC Radio 5 Live: "Obviously it is tough to say something. We have learned a very big lesson. "We have to stick together, we have another chance and we have to prepare well. Sometimes it is not your day, but we have to stick together. "It did not go our way, sometimes you have to focus on your basics and we did not perform in the scrums or line-outs. It is a big lesson for us, but we have to keep moving on and step up and stay together." Italy boss Kieran Crowley on BBC Radio 5 Live: "It was like a training run for them in the end. They just monstered us and they played very well. "We gifted them a few tries which is disappointing. We have to chuck it in the bin and go again next week. "We have got to get the set-plays right, we have got to look at the whole game, but we might not even review it and chuck it in the bin." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/29/8735100b-d281-4180-9935-bf03b4e2b781.jpgAll Blacks head coach Ian Foster on BBC Radio 5 Live:On Sam Whitelock becoming the most-capped All Black of all time: "Individually it is a great achievement and to stand alone at the top for appearances is pretty special. Sam is a warrior and he continues to do that for us. On the strength in depth: "We had an experienced bench, we had four guys back from injury. "We saw the impact they brought to the team. It is about building momentum in this World Cup." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/29/19a86132-54cd-464e-b49c-5bc9c313ef3e.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/29/1064c91f-7154-40ce-bc90-99d5a2b469bd.png

Player of the match Darcy Graham spoke after the game: "I got through lots of work today - we spoke about being discipline, keeping hold of the ball, sticking to our game and things will fall into place. The boys did that well and I'm proud of them tonight. "We just wanted to get this game out the way, get the five points and fire into Ireland. We're going to go to Paris all guns blazing and put in our best performance. Time to rest up and kick on." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/30/503bb664-bfd3-4dc0-817c-669af53e4ce6.jpgScotland head coach Gregor Townsend has also been talking to the BBC post-match:"I thought our intent to work hard was right there from the beginning. Romania were very physical, and it was tough conditions with a wet ball. We're really pleased with the performance. "We will have [tough decisions to make]. We'll sit down tomorrow and discuss selection, but this gives us really good momentum ahead of our biggest game of the World Cup. "It's a real credit to the 23 tonight and sets up whoever plays against Ireland with a lot of positivity." Scotland captain Grant Gilchrist spoke to the BBC after the game: "I'm proud of the boys, we knew we had to stand up and do a professional job. We did that from the start, played well. "Credit to Romania, they fought on and put in some big shots but we stuck to our system. That performance gives us the momentum going into next week. "The guys who came in were all excellent, they showed why they're in the squad and why this squad is so competitive. It's up to the coaches to pick the team for next week but a lot of guys put their hand up for next week. "We know what awaits us next week. It's hugely exciting. What a night tonight, it's been like playing at Murrayfield." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/9/30/a0a32fe4-266c-4d6a-a987-2f6210264f4d.jpg

ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/17F5C/production/_131304189_gettyimages-1711957270-1.jpg Handre Pollard was playing his first game for South Africa since last AugustSouth Africa are on the brink of the Rugby World Cup quarter-finals after a bonus-point victory over Tonga. The Springboks scored three first-half tries through Cobus Reinach, Canan Moodie and Deon Fourie against a much-improved Tonga. The vital fourth try came through Jesse Kriel before Willie le Roux, Marco van Staden and Kwagga Smith went over. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/4AC4/production/_131304191_gettyimages-1701279432.jpgThe game between Scotland and Ireland next Saturday will decide the final order of Pool B. Gregor Townsend's side need to beat Ireland and deny Andy Farrell's team a bonus point in Paris next Saturday to qualify. If they manage it, the Springboks will top the pool. However, a combination of a bonus-point win for Scotland and a losing bonus point for Ireland will leave all three sides on 15 points, meaning it will come down to points difference for the top spot and head-to-head for the second spot. Tonga came into the World Cup with hopes as high as ever thanks to the recruitment of former All Blacks George Moala, Vaea Fifita, Malakai Fekitoa, Charles Piutau and Augustine Pulu following a change in World Rugby's birthright amendment rule. But they have suffered three heavy defeats by Ireland, Scotland and now South Africa. Next Sunday's match against Romania, who have also lost all their games, will offer an opportunity to end their disappointing tournament on a high. Rugby World Cup: England v Samoa - Kyle Sinckler eyes 'last dance' shot at glory..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/3EDC/production/_131329061_sinckler_getty.jpg Kyle Sinckler has overcome a pectoral injury to play his part in England's Rugby World Cup campaignKyle Sinckler has warned his England team-mates that they will never have an opportunity like France 2023 again. Sinckler is one of several players, such as Owen Farrell, Jamie George, Manu Tuilagi and Courtney Lawes, who have passed their 30th birthday. Jack Willis, David Ribbans, Henry Arundell and Joe Marchant will play in France next year and may be ineligible. "It has been mentioned - the 'last dance'. It makes everyone aware how special this is," said Sinckler. "It will never happen again." Sinckler was part of the England side that finished runners-up at the 2019 tournament in Japan, suffering an extra twist of personal disappointment after being forced out of the final defeat by South Africa by a second-minute concussion. "The moment where I was really, really sad was arriving back at Heathrow and saying our goodbyes to each other," Sinckler told BBC Sport. "We knew deep down that this squad will never be the same again, coaches move on and players move on, the team changes and saying those final goodbyes after coming so close was quite heart-breaking. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/12554/production/_131329057_sinckler_kruis.jpg Sinckler arrives back at Heathrow after England's 2019 Rugby World Cup final defeat, alongside George Kruis, who won the last of his England caps four months later"Hopefully this time around, those goodbyes will be goodbyes of joy, rather than regret. "If you know within yourself you have given everything in this experience, that you haven't cut any corners and you have done everything you can, and you weren't good enough - sometimes that is just the way it is. "We are just trying to appreciate every moment." England are already assured of a place in the quarter-finals before their final Pool D match against Samoa on Saturday. They are likely to face Fiji in the last eight and have benefited from a draw that will keep them away from the top five sides in the world rankings until the semi-finals at least. But Sinckler insists England will not be looking beyond Samoa and a reunion with two of his Bristol club team-mates - Steven Luatua and Chris Vui. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/B40C/production/_131329064_sinckler_getty.jpg

France 2023: Rugby World Cup Result
Thursday 5th October
Pool A: New Zealand 73 Uruguay 0
New Zealand 73-0 Uruguay: All Blacks reach Rugby World Cup quarter-finals with 11-try win..By Alastair Telfer, BBC Sport.ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/46E0/production/_131344181_gettyimages-1708738894-1.jpgNew Zealand booked their spot in the World Cup quarter-finals with an 11-try hammering of Uruguay. Leicester Fainga'anuku scored a second-half hat-trick in Lyon, while the impressive Damian McKenzie and Will Jordan touched down twice. Richie Mo'unga, Cam Roigard, Fletcher Newell and fellow replacement Tamaiti Williams also scored. New Zealand will finish second in Pool A if France avoid defeat against Italy on Friday to top the group. The All Blacks will play Ireland or Scotland, who meet on Saturday in Paris, or defending champions South Africa in the last eight. Uruguay leave the competition with their heads held high after impressing for large periods against France and Italy before a second-half fightback against Namibia. Defeat against New Zealand was their heaviest in the pool stage. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/10648/production/_131344176_microsoftteams-image-13.png

Rugby World Cup: England v Samoa - George Ford and Owen Farrell start in Pool D game..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/117B4/production/_131340617_farrell_getty.jpg Owen Farrell and George FordGeorge Ford and Owen Farrell will start together as fly-half and inside centre for the first time since March 2021 when England take on Samoa on Saturday. Their partnership, a key part of the run to the 2019 Rugby World Cup final, has been disrupted by injury and Marcus Smith's emergence as a Test player. Manu Tuilagi is outside Farrell at 13, while Ben Earl retains his place at number eight ahead of Billy Vunipola. Joe Marchant is on the wing, with Jonny May and Freddie Steward also in the XV. Tom Curry returns from suspension to start at flanker but Henry Arundell, who scored five tries in England's most recent victory over Chile, is not included in Steve Borthwick's matchday squad of 23. Tuilagi will play against Samoa, the country of his birth and the nation represented by his brothers Anitelea, Alesana, Henry and Freddie, for the first time. Owen Farrell could pass Rugby World Cup winner Jonny Wilkinson to become England's all-time leading Test points scorer, the England captain is one point short of Wilkinson's tally of 1,179. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1513E/production/_131343368_fordfarrell_getty.jpgGeorge Ford and Owen Farrell playing for England Under-20s against Ireland in 2011Line-ups England: Steward; Marchant, Tuilagi, Farrell (capt), May; Ford, Mitchell; Genge, George, Cole, Itoje, Chessum, Lawes, Curry, Earl. Jack Willis: England flanker to miss rest of Rugby World Cup with neck injury..By Mike Henson, BBC Sport in Lille.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/17074/production/_131342349_willis2_pa-1.jpg Jack Willis' injury will prompt Steve Borthwick to call up a replacement for the knockout stageEngland flanker Jack Willis is out of England's World Cup campaign after suffering a neck injury in the 71-0 win over Chile. A replacement for the 26-year-old, who has endured a string of serious injuries, is expected to arrive in France at the start of next week. Willis' brother Tom, who plays for Saracens, and Northampton's Tom Pearson are contenders to be called up. Alex Dombrandt, Sam Underhill and Zach Mercer might also be considered. "We are obviously really disappointed for Jack. He has been an important member of this team and this squad," said head coach Steve Borthwick. "We anticipate the injury will just be a few weeks, but clearly with the timescales we operate in he will be replaced in the 33. "He is naturally very, very disappointed. His return to being back on the field has already started - a determined man like that wants to be at his very best and getting stuck into the work that needs to be done." Willis suffered a serious knee ligament injury in the Six Nations win over Italy in Rome in February 2021, which kept him out of action for more than a year. Eight months after his return, his club side Wasps went into administration, prompting him to move to Toulouse. He is available for selection for this tournament because of the extraordinary circumstances around that switch. However, his decision to sign a three-year contract extension with Toulouse in April means that his England career is likely to be put on hold because of the Rugby Football Union's policy of not selecting players based overseas.
