GB News has launched a petition to keep cash as a widely used legal tender.
"I call on the Government to introduce legislation to protect the status of cash as legal tender and as a widely accepted means of payment in the UK until at least 2050."
Google GB News cash petition and you'll find it.

Currently things are just in the 'consultation' stage, but we all know where that is going. This is actually quite dangerous. Do we really want the governments/banks being able to see, and control, every pound we spend? I am no conspiracy theorist, but this is a perfect way for those in charge to control what you spend, what you spend it on, and where you spend it. It's a perfect control mechanism. Interesting to see that the world leaders in this are the Chinese. Keep your eye on this folks, but I fear it's already too late.

"Big brother" is tightening it's grip..when you see young kids going into the shops to purchase stuff and then paying by card for amounts less than £ 3:00 you do wonder.. seen it happen also with Uni' students when we were in Brighton.was dumbfounded

Whilst the "authorities" can see our bank accounts with the right level of approval I have sympathy for Nobby's viewpoint. This has nothing to do with the widespread use of debit cards which is in fact a good thing, especially from the viewpoint of a customer facing business.

If you go to pay for a pint in a pub with cash they look at you as if you've arrived from another planet! Cash in the UK is very rarely used! Germany is light years behind the UK in many things, especially technology (believe it or not).

My daughter has a small business and I can assure that cash is not dead. However that is for a certain age group, probably post millennials. The difficulty with cash is that is expensive to hold, from a return perspective, and to transport. Banks don't like having to hold or to transfer cash from branches to bullion centres. Banks lose money holding it. Hence they charge businesses to pay in and why since Covid many businesses have stopped taking cash. One local hostelry which specialises in craft beers no longer takes cash at all, and their business hasn't fallen away. Further bank branches are no longer viable as too expensive to run so they have taken the opportunity to close - less cash holding... Young people like the convenience of it. And with charge for even small amounts they will continue to do so. I am afraid the use of electronic payment will grow.
Of course, as an aside, the move to electronic payments will also help tax collecting. No more cash only, VAT free [cough] jobs.....
