Frank McAvennie: Former Celtic, West Ham & Scotland player picks his team-mates XI..i2-prod.dailystar.co.uk/incoming/article20937272.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200e/1_GettyImages-459290246-1.jpgGoalkeeper - Billy Thompson Defenders - Ray Stewart, Roy Aitken, Alvin Martin, Julian Dicks Midfielders - Alan Devonshire, Graeme Souness, Paul McStay, Davie Cooper Forwards - Kenny Dalglish, Charlie Nicholas Frank McAvennie enjoyed a prolific partnership with Tony Cottee at West and, on one occasion, their competitiveness got the better of them, as Macca describes... "The team was just on fire. I came up with this great bet - who could score the best goal? Tony took it, £100 bet. Tony didn't go out the box. This game playing Aston Villa, he came out the box, 18, 19 yards, bang top corner. I'm delighted because I'm a team player. But obviously I'm a thinking, 'how am I going to beat that?' Mark Ward put me through - Nigel Spink's a big lad. I scooped it and I put it over him. I'm thinking, 'he's going to catch it' but luckily the ball crossed the line, bet was won - brilliant. "After the game, the manager knew something was up after that chip, made a few enquiries, found out about the bet and fined the two of us £1,000. Never done it again. And I still never got the £100 off Tony Cottee."

Galatasaray forward Wilfried Zaha is keen to return to the Premier League, with West Ham United, Wolves and former club Crystal Palace interested in the 31-year-old Ivory Coast international. West Ham have had a 35m euro (£26.9m) bid rejected by Nice for France defender Jean-Clair Todibo, 24. The Hammers are also interested in signing Manchester United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka with the 26-year-old Englishman having less than 12 months left on his current contract. West Ham are weighing up making a fresh offer for Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo after having a £24.5m bid for the 24-year-old France international rejected. Flamengo have initiated contact with West Ham about signing 26-year-old Brazil international Lucas Paqueta and the two clubs are in the early stages of talks.

The 24-year-old, who came through the Hammers academy and made 109 senior appearances, has left the club at the expiration of his contract on 30 June. In a message to fans on the club website, he said: "I have been blessed to have come through the Academy of Football and to play for the first team in the Premier League, domestic cups and in European competitions. "I just want to be known and remembered for my time at West Ham for having played with a smile on my face and having really enjoyed my football. That's really important to me." Johnson, who is the cousin of former England defenders Paul Parker and Ledley King, joined West Ham aged seven. The full-back was part of the squad that won the Europa Conference League in 2023, which he described as his "most special memory". He added: "To be involved in a European trophy win doesn't come around frequently, so to be around and be part of it, and to be able to achieve that with West Ham was incredible. "My dreams were exceeded by what happened two seasons ago and I'm just so, so pleased I did it as a West Ham player. I'll never forget that night."

No limits for new West Ham - Julen Lopetegui..by Simon Stone, Chief football news reporter.ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/1d51/live/87cff7d0-37d5-11ef-838d-27f8313922b4.jpgNew West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui says there are "no limits" to his ambition for the club. Lopetegui knew when he left Wolverhampton Wanderers on the eve of last season he wanted to stay in the Premier League. It is why he remained in England for an extended period even as successor Gary O'Neil was making his mark at Molineux. He underlined his determination to succeed in his unveiling news conference at London Stadium on Monday. And he stressed he will not set targets for his new club - because he does not want to restrict them. "There are no limits," he said. "We believe in ourselves. "I always said [after leaving Wolves] my first thought was to remain in the Premier League. "I have a lot of reasons to be here. I am in a big club - a London club with a big potential. "We have a very good platform to be able to do one step and to make a big noise." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/05/23/11/85242879-13450979-image-a-32_1716459529631.jpgOn Lucas Paqueta, who has been charged with six counts of breaching the FA's betting regulations: "We know he and his family are suffering a lot in this moment but when I saw him smiling in the last match (for Brazil) that was good. We are also his family and we are going to take care of him. We are looking forward to seeing him with us." On Edson Alvarez, who was injured on Copa America duty with Mexico: "We are crossing our fingers. We suffered a big injury with Edson. It is not good news because he is an important player." Speaking about why he has moved to West Ham, Lopetegui said: "I have a lot of reasons to be here. I am in a big club, a London club with big potential. Look at the pitch, the stadium, the fans we have. The Premier League is the best in the world. It is the competition we want to compete in. We love to be here." On succeeding Moyes, the Spaniard added: "David Moyes has done very good work here. But here we are. The fans want to win. We will win more if we play well with collective football. I love attacking football but I also love counter-attacking. We have to choose our way."

West Ham unveil 2024-25 home shirt..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/aa57/live/14c11ae0-3919-11ef-85ba-e5e081cb6e53.jpgWest Ham have unveiled their new home shirt for the 2024-25 Premier League season. The kit is inspired by the Hammers' glory era of the 1960s in which the club won major domestic and European silverware for the first time with the help of players such as Bobby Moore, Martin Peters, Geoff Hurst who were part of England's World Cup-winning team. The 2024-25 season also marks the 60th anniversary of West Ham's European Cup Winners’ Cup triumph. The new kit pays tribute to the 1960s' style with a round neck and claret detailing on the sleeve cuffs. It also features a new commemorative Umbro diamond logo to mark the British sportswear company’s 100th anniversary. The club said: "This bold kit celebrates the memories of our past triumphs, all while showing the determination, spirit and style of the teams which won the FA Cup and European Cup Winners’ Cup in consecutive seasons."

West Ham sign Wolves defender Max Kilman for £40m..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/07/04/14/86923541-0-image-a-62_1720100687229.jpgWest Ham have completed the signing of Wolves captain Max Kilman for £40m on a seven-year contract. The defender is reunited with Hammers manager Julen Lopetegui, who made him skipper while head coach at Molineux. Wolves rejected West Ham's opening bid of £25m but accepted the improved offer for the player they signed from Maidenhead for £40,000 in 2018. The National League side are also due to bank a 10% sell-on of £4m from the deal. Kilman, 27, said: "It’s an amazing feeling to be a West Ham United player. “As soon as I was aware of the interest from the club, it was an opportunity I was keen to pursue, so I couldn’t be more delighted to be here. “I really enjoyed working with Julen during his time at Wolves. He’s a top-class coach and someone I learned a lot from, and I am confident I will continue to improve as a player under his management here.” Kilman made 151 appearances for Wolves, scoring three goals, since making his debut in May 2019. He joins goalkeeper Wes Foderingham and Brazilian winger Luis Guilherme as summer signings at London Stadium. Wolves sporting director Matt Hobbs, who signed Kilman in his previous position as chief scout, said his departure was a "bittersweet moment" but a "deal that worked for everybody". Hobbs said: "He’s someone you can’t help but root for. I don’t know anyone at the club who would have a negative word about him. "Maybe people will realise what he did on the pitch more now he’s left than when he was here."

The Hammers announce Cockney-inspired away kit..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/3834/live/3acd6430-3d03-11ef-bdc5-41d7421c2adf.jpgWest Ham have unveiled their new away kit for the 2024-25 season, which takes inspiration from the club's East End origins. The black shirt features "unmistakably east London elements", including a graphic of St Mary-le-Bow on the nape of the neck, and the traditional claret trim. A club statement said: "The striking strip is a reflection of the club's community in the vibrant heart of London, celebrating the collective identity shared."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/2f7f/live/95709000-0915-11ef-bee9-6125e244a4cd.jpgWe asked for your views on West Ham United signing Max Kilman on a seven-year contract, which will see the defender reunite with his former manager Julen Lopetegui.
Here are some of your thoughts:
Joe: Being the Wolves captain must say something about his ability as a player and a leader, something that West Ham have lacked recently. I can see him being a solid signing for the back four. He reminds me of Craig Dawson in a way. Jon: £40m is an absolute joke amount for him. If this is the type of business Tim Steidten is going to do, I think we have had it! Adrian: We paid way too much for Kilman but I do think he could be a good addition - only time will tell. West Ham need a top-quality striker now. I hope they haven't spent all of their money on a centre-half. Steve: If Kilman can regain the form he showed when he was on the brink of the England squad, he should be a positive addition to West Ham's backline. It is an area which does need strengthening. Adam: It seems like a high transfer fee for a good but not exceptional player. He is on a seven-year contract as well, which seems excessive for a player of his age. Good luck to him, hopefully it works out for him and West Ham. It's great for Maidenhead! Don: We will have to wait until the first game of the season to know how all of our new acquisitions will work together. Steve T: We need reliability at the back and Max played every minute of the 38 league games last season, a good buy... i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/07/04/14/86923543-0-image-a-64_1720100700204.jpg

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/5a02/live/9908cdb0-3f96-11ef-ad0d-f55b8c1259b9.jpgWest Ham defender Aaron Creswell says his time time with the club has been a "rollercoaster" but he "wouldn't change it for the world". The 34-year-old is now the longest-serving member of the Hammers' squad and is entering his 11th season with the team. He completed a £3.75m move to east London from Ipswich Town in July 2014 and has now made 349 appearances for the club. "It just goes so fast, and when I reflect on my time here, I've had some real highs but also some lows as well, but they are part and parcel of the journey and I wouldn't change it for the world," Creswell told club media. "I've made some fantastic memories and some fantastic friends, which include both players and members of staff. It's been a rollercoaster, but it's one that I have fully enjoyed." The left-back is in Austria for West Ham's pre-season training where he is working with new boss Julen Lopetegui for the first time. The former Wolves coach replaced David Moyes at the end of last season and is the fifth manager Creswell has played for while with the Hammers. "It's been brilliant [since Lopetegui came in]," he said. "It's an exciting time for everyone and one we are all looking forward to. Every manager I've worked under, which is now five at West Ham, comes with different ideas, their own philosophy and way of doing things, not just on the pitch but off it also. "He [Lopetegui] has certainly put in place how he wants to work already and I'm sure we will have a bigger meeting when everyone is back and go through it all again. "I think if you dive into everything the manager wants and give it everything you’ve got, then you’ll do fine. We are all professionals, so you’ve got to attack it with a positive mindset. I am 34 years old now, but I still want to learn things."

Aaron Wan-Bissaka in demand..by Simon Stone, Chief football news reporter.ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/566/cpsprodpb/7c6e/live/d26d0f60-44ca-11ef-8ade-a11b190a056f.jpgManchester United made it clear very early this summer they would listen to realistic offers for virtually all of their squad. That does not mean they will all get sold but it does underline United's need to raise money. Full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka falls into that category. He is not a regular member of Erik ten Hag's starting line-up - although he played all of the FA Cup final win over Manchester City - and his contract runs out next year, when he could leave for nothing. West Ham have made their interest known but, as with Harry Maguire and Scott McTominay last season, financially it needs to make sense for Wan-Bissaka, who will know more clubs will come for him when he is a free agent. He is one of those players likely to be talked about a lot before the 30th August transfer deadline - with no guarantee he will move anywhere.

The Hammers eye Kante move..by Nizaar Kinsella, BBC Sport football news reporter.ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/35fc/live/0028c310-45a0-11ef-af77-8713e5143fed.jpgWest Ham are interested in signing France midfielder N'Golo Kante. The 33-year-old starred for France at Euro 2024 after a year in Saudi Arabia with Al-Ittihad after leaving Chelsea. A potential return to the Premier League could be scuppered by Ittihad's desire to hold onto the World Cup winner. Kante still has years left on his current contract.

Billy Horschel on Hammers and Kante links..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/d3f6/live/28b27be0-45ce-11ef-b74c-bb483a802c97.jpgAmerican golfer Billy Horschel has been speaking about his beloved West Ham in the aftermath of his second round at The Open. Horschel is in the mix as the tournament nears the halfway mark and was seen sporting the West Ham crest on his bag at Royal Troon. "Whenever I try to come over here I try to get the West Ham bag out. Up the Hammers and come on you Irons," Horschel told media. "Other supporters of other clubs have been gracious enough to be nice to me compared to how they may be to a fellow English person supporting West Ham." Asked about new manager Julen Lopetegui, Horschel replied: "I think Julen is going to do a good job. I'm excited listening. David Moyes was awesome. He took the club from one spot to another and it was time to pass the torch. I think Julen will do a good job and I think David has something up his sleeve for the next couple of years - I think maybe the Scotland national job will be his." And on links in the morning newspapers with former Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante, Horschel remarked: "I saw that this morning. $20m (£15m) for a 33-year-old, I don't think that's really good business so I don't think that's going to happen." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/2037/live/1e726e10-45ce-11ef-9e1c-3b4a473456a6.jpg

West Ham United are interested in a move for AC Milan's 26-year-old England defender Fikayo Tomori. Manchester United and West Ham are in competition to sign Morocco right-back Noussair Mazraoui from Bayern Munich, who want about £19m for the 26-year-old. West Ham could pursue a deal for Manchester United's 26-year-old English right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka if Mazraoui moves to Old Trafford.

England defender Fikayo Tomori, who is currently at AC Milan, Leeds' Crysencio Summerville and Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran are the latest. West Ham are in the uncomfortable position of having money to spend and their priorities - forwards and central defence - being obvious. Technical director Tim Steidten is busily working his way though the targets to see what deals can be done. Inevitably that means a lot of calls - and a lot of links. West Ham's non-Euros and Copa America players have flown into Florida for the start of a two-week camp that includes games against Crystal Palace and Wolves. Meanwhile the rumours will continue until a deal is done.
