Report by Simon Stone, Chief football news reporter at Etihad Stadium.Imperious Manchester City beat West Ham 3-1 at Etihad Stadium to become the first team to win the English league title four seasons in a row. With City needing a win to be sure of holding off Arsenal, who started the final day two points behind but with a better goal difference, Phil Foden put Pep Guardiola’s side ahead after just two minutes. The England star added another before the break and although Mohammed Kudus pulled one back, midfielder Rodri restored the home side's two-goal cushion with a shot from the edge of the area after 59 minutes. City survived a late scare when West Ham had a second goal ruled out by VAR for handball. However, their victory was never seriously in doubt The win completed a staggering run of 19 wins and four draws since their last defeat in the league, at Aston Villa on 6 December. City have now won six out of the past seven Premier League titles. Last term, they joined Huddersfield, Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United, twice, in winning the top flight three years in a row. Now Guardiola’s team have achieved something no other men's side has managed since the English league was formed in 1888, 136 years ago. On 25th May they will aim to become the first side to complete the domestic Double in successive seasons when they face Manchester United in the FA Cup final at Wembley. It is 15 months since City were hit with 115 Premier League charges for alleged financial irregularity, which they strongly deny. Earlier this season both Everton and Nottingham Forest were charged and deducted points over breaching profit and sustainability rules. But there is, as yet, no update on when City's case will be heard. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/19/590e1987-6de8-47f8-b85a-5b4ba8bc1add.png

Unless he comes back for a third spell of course. The club confirmed earlier this month that the Scot would leave at the end of his contract. Julen Lopetegui is expected to replace him. Moyes was in charge for the second half of the 2017-18 season, keeping them up before leaving at the end of the season. He returned in December 2019 and led them into Europe, including several runs to the latters stages and most memorably the Europa Conference League trophy last season - their first silverware for 43 years. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/19/d59f2ecf-5c4f-4f2f-8c34-8dae8bbdd9a9.jpgWest Ham boss David Moyes: "I hope that the people here have enjoyed my company over the period, and I'll keep in touch with them. I've enjoyed my time here, and I'll always look at it fondly. I'm very proud to be able to say I helped deliver European football to West Ham. "The amount of games we've played has been huge, and there are lots of things that show our success. I'm pleased to be leaving West Ham in a strong position, and we'll see what happens in the future. "We can't finish lower than ninth which is a really good league position for West Ham in lots of ways. The players and ourselves are really pleased that no matter what the situation, we're in a really strong position." West Ham boss David Moyes has played down any suggestion that his side will try to win this match for Declan Rice. A Hammers win (or draw) would open the door for former West Ham captain Rice to win the title with Arsenal. "No, no," said Moyes. "Everybody here loves Declan. Everybody will remember him but we're not doing it for Declan. "We're doing it for ourselves and we need to try and do the best that we can and we concentrate and focus on what we're doing and hopefully it works." West Ham boss David Moyes, speaking to Sky Sports: "My emotions are fine, every game is important for a manager. "I have enjoyed my time at West Ham. I had a great send off last week, we had a good result too and hopefully we can do that again today. "Today is a big game for the Premier League." On Jarrod Bowen not being named in the squad: "It is difficult when you don't have Jarrod. He has tonsillitis and it wasn't well enough to travel. He is a big miss for us, to be without him is a blow." On Man City: "I watched Real Madrid play deep against Man City. I have seen some teams play five at the back and some have played four, whatever you do City make it really difficult as they find a way to outdo you."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/7621/live/8ef9e870-fa7e-11ee-8369-47dc4454b972.jpgWe asked for your opinions on Sunday's Premier League fixture between Manchester City and West Ham, as Pep Guardiola's team clinched a record-breaking fourth consecutive Premier League title.
Here are some of the best responses:
West Ham fans
Darren: Another soft, poorly motivated performance. There are too many players that have been on the beach since Easter. Individually, James Ward-Prowse was off the pace for the first two goals and Areola should've done better with the third. In-between, we offered very little except for Mo's worldie. How long can we keep him? Andy: That summed up David Moyes nicely. We had nothing to lose, we could only finish ninth whatever happened, so he had the chance to let his hair down and have a go, but instead he picked a back five and went ultra-defensive. We couldn't possibly move forward under Moyes, I'm looking forward to a new chapter. Joseph: We finished a respectable ninth, but the huge losses since the start of the year belay that achievement unfortunately. We could've finished the season so much better. Moyes has to take responsibility for leaving us with an ageing squad that has to be completely overhauled for next season, if we're going to be serious challengers in the Premier League. Dave: I don't think that getting rid of David Moyes is the answer to West Ham's problems as a team. I think it's down to the chairman, who needs to spend more money on getting players in that will make West Ham more competitive in the Premier League.

Man City 3-1 West Ham: What David Moyes said:
ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/e44c/live/67229300-1618-11ef-a5f9-c9e97f2e93cf.jpg
David Moyes speaking to the media for the final time as West Ham boss: "Today was all about Manchester City, Pep Guardiola and how well they have done. We had to come here and attempt to put on the best show that we could. "You would not have thought we would be behind so soon but it was a wonder goal by Phil Foden. It was something special so you can see why he is getting the accolades he is. "We stuck it out and we kept ourselves in the game as much as we could. The third goal was a killer and then took a comeback away from us. "If you want to come here and get a result then you are going to have to play really, really well. They are the best team in the world. The manager has done so, so good and it is beyond belief that he has won four Premier League titles in a row. "It used to be when someone won one year, it was very hard to win it again the next year because all the others were preparing and getting stronger. For him to come here and knock that myth over is an incredible job." On how he is feeling: "It is my last game here, but I have not processed yet what exactly it is that I want to do. But what I do know is that I leave West Ham in a better place than when I started. "If you asked other supporters about what we have done then I would imagine they would say it is pretty good for West Ham! "I will miss it but it will not stop me from watching it."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/105b/live/dd356a40-0b96-11ef-9973-d38818507d0a.jpgCesc Fabregas believes Julen Lopetegui could be a good coach for West Ham despite playing a "different style" to what fans have grown used to in recent years. The Spaniard has agreed a deal to replace David Moyes as manager at the end of the season and speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live's Planet Premier League podcast, Fabregas rates him highly. "I think he's a good coach - I shouldn't say that because he kicked me out of the Spanish national team. He's the one that stopped taking me - so that hurts," Fabregas said. "He's had success, obviously. All that mess that happened in the Spanish national team when he signed for Real Madrid - they kicked him out before the World Cup but when Real Madrid signs obviously something is good around you. "His Sevilla team for example played quite well - they won the Europa League playing some good football. "At Wolves I think he did a good job - especially in the first year. Creating a good dynamic, a very good brand of football and getting them away from the relegation zone." Lopetegui left Wolves three days before the start of the Premier League season and the club said both parties had "accepted their differences of opinion on certain issues and agreed an amicable end to his contract was the best solution". Fabregas added: "He's definitely a coach that has very clear ideas of what he wants to do - he's had success a couple of times where he's been. "I think he could be good - but again, he plays a different style than what West Ham have done for the last couple of years." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/b36c/live/ea6eee80-0df2-11ef-8856-81fec34dc4e7.jpgWest Ham are set to appoint Julen Lopetegui as their new manager later this week. The former Spain and Real Madrid coach was identified as the Hammers’ first choice to replace outgoing boss David Moyes and, earlier this month, agreed to take up the role. Now the Premier League season is over, Lopetegui’s contract will be signed, allowing him to take over for the start of pre-season, which includes a two-week trip to the United States for matches against Crystal Palace and Wolves. Ironically, Lopetegui spent the second half of the 2022-23 season with Wolves, guiding the club to safety. However, he left on the eve of the new campaign after issues over transfer funding failed to be resolved. Former Spain and Real Madrid coach Lopetegui won the Europa League with Sevilla in 2020 before moving to Wolves two years later.

Lopetegui announced as West Ham head coach.. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/23/134036bd-f0a4-408c-b4d7-470d3de98703.jpgJulen Lopetegui has been speaking to club media following his appointment in east London. The Spaniard has told supporters that Moyes has left a 'fantastic platform' for him to build on and he rejected other offers to join the club. "I feel very happy, first of all, to be able to be part of the future of this big club. We will try to put our stamp on the club," said Lopetegui. “I feel that we have a fantastic platform. I think the last few years have been very good years to have this base, of course, but my ambition as a coach is always to be better and better, to achieve more and bigger aims and to encourage and improve the players, the team, and to compete because football is about this – to compete. We are very ambitious about this. “I am where I want to be. I am here because I want to be here and for us it was a fantastic day when we closed our agreement here because we our commitment is 100 per cent to be here. We had other opportunities but I am very happy that West Ham chose me because I chose West Ham too, so we are really happy about this. “We came here with the idea and the thought to make a big, big noise. That's why we came here, and we are excited by this challenge. Of course, we are going to do our best to help the Club and the team to achieve to achieve the best level and to achieve our aims. I assure the fans that they are going to be key in all our achievements." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/23/5da30fc0-4b9c-42d9-8e25-a76294fb9c9b.jpgWest Ham joint-chairman David Sullivan has been singing Lopetegui's praises. “I would like to welcome Julen to the club and wish him every success in his new role. We believe this appointment will ensure a strong opportunity to build on the positive progress made in recent seasons, helping the club to move forward in the direction that aligns with our ambitions. “We have been working hard behind the scenes to continue shaping the right strategy for West Ham United’s future, and we are looking forward to bringing Julen’s coaching ability, experience and personality to the club.” ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/23/4153dc0a-36c7-4e7b-a58e-2ec06e2ef28c.jpgJulen Lopetegui is already at West Ham's training ground at Rush Green in Romford, meeting the club's staff, including the women's manager Rehanne Skinner, technical director Tim Steidten and former captain Mark Noble, who is now the Hammers' sporting director. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/760/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/23/f1b7957c-9326-4db0-b92b-f5e732058888.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/23/89abd680-0fc3-46f7-8a09-60bf501c0387.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/23/00b113a7-08d3-44f3-bc50-836c9068812b.jpg

Julen Lopetegui's road to West Ham..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/23/c9c6e110-9bfd-4f74-b789-8d36a8478b08.jpgJulen Lopetegui has crammed in plenty of experiences into his 10 years in club management. After a brief stint with Rayo Vallecano following his retirement as a player in 2003, it wasn't until 2014 that the Spaniard moved back into club management with Porto. The 57-year-old spent two years with the Portuguese club, leaving in 2016 to become the manager of Spain's national team. Lopetegui was with the national team for nearly two years but never managed in a tournament after he was sacked just days before the 2018 World Cup after Real Madrid announced him as their new manager for the upcoming season. After a brief, unpleasant stint at the Bernabeu, Lopetegui really found his feet at Sevilla as he guided the club to Europa League success in 2020 during his first season in charge. He joined Wolves in November 2022 and was a popular figure with supporters, but he stood down at the start of the 23-24 campaign due to a clash with the club's owners. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/23/5f01d4a6-6a8c-4324-a338-d046651744a0.jpgLopetegui statistically Wolves' best ever Premier League managerBefore returning to club management with Porto, Lopetegui was instrumental in bringing through Spain's next generation as coach of the U21s, U20s and U19s. In 2012 he won the European U19 Championships, and he followed that up with success in the European U21 Championships a year later with a team that boasted the likes of David De Gea, Thiago Alcantara and Isco. Lopetegui had to wait until 2020 to get his hands on silverware again, winning the Europa League with Sevilla and knocking Manchester United out along the way. Wolves were bottom of the Premier League when Lopetegui took charge in November 2022 but he helped the club to a 13th placed finish before his departure.

Jackz in Brixham: HAVE to play attractive football and HAVE to finish top 10 MINIMUM. Good luck Lopetegui Anon: Lopetegui needs to create greater depth in the squad and build a defence less dependent on the protection of Alvarez. 4 or 5 nil thumping were far to regular. Also we need an on-field captain who can exhort players to dig-in through example. Irish Hammer: Lopetegui has to finish in the top 10, a decent domestic cup run and European football qualification by the end of his second season. If we wanted pretty football we should have brought in Kompany, don't expect a huge tactical shift unless Sullivan gets his wallet out. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/1b9d/live/36b7cbc0-18ef-11ef-a22e-a75630c88eea.jpg

Your West Ham United player of the season is...No surprises it's JARROD BOWEN.ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/742/cpsprodpb/60c3/live/cb689840-184e-11ef-baf9-2dfab45ba024.jpgAnd here's what James Jones from We Are West Ham, external had to say about your winner when the vote opened on 15 May... "His 20 goals and 10 assists in all competitions have ensured West Ham were in the fight for Europe for the majority of the season. An unbelievable campaign which should see him on the plane to Euro 2024 for England this summer."

The verdict on West Ham's season..by James Jones, Fan writer.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/fa16/live/63615f50-16a7-11ef-9b12-1ba8f95c4917.jpg ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/c478/live/4c20e950-17a6-11ef-baa7-25d483663b8e.jpg
West Ham's Premier League season might not have lived up to expectations with a ninth place finish, but they did reach the Europa League quarter-final.
James Jones, from We Are West Ham, external, has given his verdict on the 2023-24 campaign.Season rating: 6.5/10. It started really well and we did enjoy another memorable run in the Europa League, but form after in 2024 cost us massively - and we failed to qualify for Europe again as a result. Ninth is not the worst position, but it probably should have been better. Happy with your manager? Over the course of the past four years, yes. David Moyes transformed our club, but it was definitely time for change given the form during the second half of the season. It was going stale. Regardless, I will always love him for giving me the four best years of my life supporting West Ham. Legend. Unsung hero: Emerson Palmieri. Just consistently solid at left-back - good defensively but also offers a bit of a threat in attack and has a good partnership with Lucas Paqueta. The fact we have been so poor defensively this season means he perhaps has not got the plaudits he deserves because, on the whole, he has been our best performing defender. Player you would most like to sign: A striker. Do not care which one, just as long as he fits the system and scores goals. We cannot go into another season relying on Michail Antonio and it is unfair to expect Jarrod Bowen to have to deputise when he is already so effective from the right. That has to be a priority for the new manager. Best away fans: From memory, Bayer Leverkusen were good, but that is no real surprise given what they have been treated to this season. In the Premier League, Luton Town were decent.

Aston Villa are interested in 24-year-old Italy defender Raoul Bellanova, after he impressed during his first season with Torino, but the Hammers and Manchester United are also keen. West Ham and Fulham have held talks with Corinthians over the possibility of signing 19-year-old Brazilian forward Wesley.

West Ham coaching staff to depart alongside David Moyes..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/bc3d/live/527439e0-1825-11ef-85cb-e963500f6f32.jpgWest Ham have confirmed that first-team coaches Billy McKinlay, Kevin Nolan, John Heitinga and Henry Newman have left the club. All four worked with manager David Moyes - who is also departing this summer - during his time in charge as the Hammers secured three top-nine Premier League finishes and won the Europa Conference League in 2023. Head of player recruitment Rob Newman and first-team technical advisor Alan Irvine will also leave, as will fitness coach Nick Davies and head of performance analysis Jamie Osman.

Lopetegui targets Kilman reunion - report..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/23/25cb233c-e1e2-47af-8c04-90db0739d1e0.jpgAccording to the Sun, external, new West Ham head coach Julen Lopetegui could soon be reunited with Max Kilman at London Stadium. The defender, who is celebrating his 27th birthday today, enjoyed a brief spell under Lopetegui as the Spaniard steered Wolves away from relegation during the 2022-23 season. The Englishman has cemented himself as a mainstay in the Wolves defence, playing every single minute of the Premier League campaign just gone, as well as being installed as captain under Lopetegui's successor, Gary O'Neil. Kilman, who extended his contract at the start of last season until 2028, has been touted as a replacement for Kurt Zouma in an expected summer reboot for the Hammers under the guidance of technical director Tim Steidten.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/2f7f/live/95709000-0915-11ef-bee9-6125e244a4cd.jpgWe asked for your views on whether you were happy about Julen Lopetegui's appointment as head coach and what should be first on his to-do list?
Here are some of your responses:
Calpso: We should have stuck with Moyes. The new manager is not an upgrade in my opinion. We need to strengthen the central defence and get a good striker. Scamacca was good but Moyes wouldn't adapt his system to suit him. Bob: I only hope the new manager brings in youngsters from the academy and plays attractive, attacking football. We also need better central defenders and a proven striker. Barney: We got rid of a problem, now let's give the new guy a chance. I believe he is an improvement on Moyes and in my opinion we can breathe a sigh of relief that we will not be playing 'Moyesball' this season. Relegation is not on the cards. Tony: Moyes deserves credit for what he did for the club and the view West Ham is now seen in by the wider football community. Lopetegui now must be given time to build on that base and implement his playing philosophy of possession based football. Fans, pundits and journalists aren't that patient though. I think he will move the club forward. #COYI Mark: Personally I think whoever comes in will have a rebuild on their hands. The season after this one will be the acid test, but I hope the fans give him time because the squad he's inherited is no better than ninth or eighth place. His transfer dealings are the key to whether he succeeds or not. Robert: I'm going to give the new manager a chance and not go against him before he's even started but he's got big shoes to fill as Moyes built us into a European football club and even won us our first silverware in a long time. David: Good appointment and hopefully a more attacking approach than David Moyes. The board need to back Lopetegui with huge investment starting with a quality striker, two central defenders and two full-backs. Assuming Bowen stays, will we keep Lucas Paqueta and Kudus? They are both key to success next season. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/605/cpsprodpb/e239/live/181f63a0-19b5-11ef-a962-2d3f331879ab.jpg
