ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/609e/live/2fcf7ac0-0633-11ef-b9d8-4f52aebe147d.jpgBBC Sport's chief football news reporter Simon Stone has been answering your questions. Mike asked: What did you think of Tottenham's line-up in the north London derby? Do you think playing the likes of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Ben Davies showed that Ange Postecoglou and Spurs have prioritised the other games in the run-in? They put out a patched-up squad against probably Arsenal's best team in seven years (even if they did get away with only a 3-2 loss) and seemed like they were just protecting key players for important games. Simon replied: I am not sure about that theory at all. I realise Tottenham still have five games to play but they do not play again until Thursday and have no travel. They have also surrendered the initiative in that battle for fourth place to Aston Villa as they cannot catch them even if they win their two games in hand (which are against Chelsea and Manchester City so not exactly easy). Tottenham have won six and lost four of their past 13 Premier League fixtures. That tells me Ange Postecoglou is searching for the line-up and combinations that would give him consistency, which is what every manager wants from their team. No-one can be certain what they will get from Tottenham at the moment, even within games. The respective first and second-half performances Sunday were like chalk and cheese.

Report By Alex Howell, BBC Sport football news reporter at Stamford Bridge.Chelsea beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to keep them in the hunt for European football - and deal a massive blow to their London rivals' hopes of qualifying for the Champions League next season. Trevoh Chalobah opened the scoring when the defender rose to meet a Conor Gallagher free-kick with a powerful header mid-way through the first half. There was a lengthy video assistant referee check for a possible block by Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella on Brennan Johnson in the build-up, but the goal was given. Spurs did not create many chances and Cristian Romero had their best opportunity when he headed wide inside the six-yard-box in the first half. But Chelsea took control in the 71st minute when Cole Palmer's free-kick from the edge of the area struck the bar and Nicolas Jackson headed the rebound into an empty net. Victory sent Chelsea into eighth place, just two points behind Newcastle in seventh and a possible European spot. Tottenham, meanwhile, are seven points behind Aston Villa with a game in hand in their battle for fourth place. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/594/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/2/293b2d52-2e30-4968-a8ec-3ebc1541b96a.jpgTottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, speaking to Sky Sports: "It wasn't good enough and I have to take responsibility for that, it is on me. I am the manager and I am the one putting them out there and it was not good enough. "When we put in a performance like we did in the first half it meant my message wasn't getting through." What message was that? "Come on mate, we didn't play well, do you want me to write you a dossier of where it went wrong? "I feel like we've lost a bit of belief and conviction in our football and that is on me to change that. "It wasn't about conceding the [first] goal, it was our approach to playing football and we were nowhere near good enough. That is on me. "We've been in a bit of a grind for a while now, that is part of our challenge and part of our growth. We have to go out there and perform and sometimes you have to grind out. We were poor today." Top four out of the question now? "I don't now how to answer these questions. We were poor today, what is the point of thinking about anything else? My responsibility is to make sure we play better next time."

Spurs lacked belief and conviction - Postecoglou..by Alex Howell, BBC Sport football news reporter at Stamford Bridge.ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/594/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/2/f2553749-1bb4-45d6-be93-ba856c82f7ac.jpgAnge Postecoglou said Tottenham lacked "belief and conviction" but promised to find a fix as their Champions League hopes suffered a blow with defeat at Chelsea. Spurs were beaten 2-0 at Stamford Bridge and are now seven points behind fourth-placed Aston Villa, albeit with a game in hand. Tottenham have games against Liverpool and title-chasing Manchester City among their remaining fixtures and have now lost three in a row in the Premier League. "They've lost a little bit of belief and conviction in their football and that's for me to fix," Postecoglou said of his side. Tottenham made an excellent start to the season under Postecoglou and their free-flowing football was praised as the former Celtic manager looked to bring Champions League football back to the club. However, Spurs have won just two of their latest seven games and it leaves them needing to sharply find a return to winning ways while hoping that Villa slump. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/0dba/live/cc561980-08cc-11ef-b89c-3bf358a2ed5f.jpgHeaded goals from Trevoh Chalobah and Nicolas Jackson gave Chelsea a well-earned league success over their London rivals. "It wasn't a great night for us. We didn't play at the levels we needed to and didn't deserve something from it," Postecoglou said. "We lacked belief and conviction in our game. "I don't know if it is low confidence, but we are not playing with the mindset we need to play the football we want to, and that is something I have to look at. "It is on me to fix it. That is what we will be doing." Asked how he would "fix" Tottenham's failing form, Postecoglou said: "Just hard work, mate, there's no major formula. We will work hard and make sure we get it right."

Here are some of your answers:
Tottenham fans
Graham: Abysmal. Shocking performance by each and every player. Two seasonal ‘cup finals’ in a week and didn’t turn up for either. Players disgraced themselves, the club and above all the fans. Pathetic! Ed: Spineless performance against a team that has struggled and with some of their best players out . I think Ange is out of his depth , bereft of ideas, inability to pick the right team . All our players should take a hard look at themselves. We are a disgrace. Tiger: Seems like our players are not enjoying playing football. No passion whatsoever and not playing as a team or a functional unit. Ange you can't say week after week we playing well when what we are seeing is the absolute opposite. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/3/bae32423-bdd3-4e9e-a29b-d7a0ca9873df.jpg

Sunday 5th May 2024 - Premier League
Liverpool 4 (Salah 16, Robertson 45, Gakpo 50, Elliott 59) Tottenham Hotspur 2 (Richarlison 72, Son 77)
ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/24a9/live/44f7cc00-0b0f-11ef-81fe-c12fd33f3636.jpg
Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou to BBC's Match of the Day: "Our last two away games at Newcastle and Chelsea weren't great, not only the performance but the results as well. At least today I actually thought we played more like ourselves and we at least endeavoured to be the kind of team we want to be. "I thought first half, we actually played well, it's just whenever we got to the final third just nothing came of it and I think it allowed Liverpool to get comfortable and the flip side of that, when they got into our box, they were looking dangerous with the player they have. Obviously them getting the two goals made it difficult for us and in the second half, they obviously scored a couple of exceptional goals. "I still thought our football was good in general and at least in the last half hour, our front third started to click a little bit more and looked a little bit more dangerous. A couple of goals, created a couple more [chances]. It is disappointing obviously when you lose but at least today, I can hold on to the fact that we looked more like ourselves." On whether the substitutes made the difference: "I thought before that, we played some really good stuff under pressure to get out of the front third, but just whenever we got to the front third, just nothing came of it and when that happens, the opposition get comfortable. "If we were able to even just create a couple of goalscoring opportunities for ourselves, it would've maybe set Liverpool back a little bit. I still thought [we did] in genera' but our games subs coming on had some creativity and Richy's [Richarlison] presence up front helped us."

Here are some of your answers:
Tottenham fans
Maggie: It's the defending or lack of it. When our attackers were clicking it wasn't so bad during the early part of the season but the last few games have been woeful. You can't start playing with 25 minutes to go and 4-0 down. Villa's earlier loss should have inspired us. It's just so disappointing after a fabulous start to the season. Nick: As with the last three games, if you make mistakes then really good players invariably score. This is still a mishmash squad of a number of players who are mid-table. Ange can take credit for both bringing some stability back and making a transitional season better than hoped. However, next season has to be a genuine step forward. Joe: Better than Chelsea game, however Son at centre-forward and Emerson at left back are big mistakes. Keep the final formation for the Burnley game. Next transfer window crucial both in and out of the club. Tony: Another awful display and a scoreline that frankly flattered us. I really don't know where we go from here. Postecoglou looks completely out of his depth and tactically inept. Unproven at this level he was always a bit of a risk and sadly it looks increasingly like the risk is not going to pay off. Will he get another season? Should he? ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/0e42/live/714fcf70-fcda-11ee-b809-ed07436f9ef3.jpg

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/860c/live/13db9bf0-0c6e-11ef-bee9-6125e244a4cd.jpgBy Nick Godwin, BBC Radio London reporter. One of the distinguishing elements of Ange Postecoglou’s reign at Tottenham so far has been his calmness on the touchline. Whether his team were losing, winning, struggling, rejoicing or even floundering, his solid, unperturbable countenance remained consistent. Given his team’s recent struggles, you’d forgive him for allowing that patient mask to slip at some point. And on Thursday evening it finally did. It was just before Chelsea took the lead. Spurs had conceded a free kick inside their own half and it was as though the Tottenham manager had looked into the future and loathed what he saw. From the technical area he made it very clear that free kicks of that type were avoidable and could be costly – as Trevoh Chalobah’s headed opener moments later proved. He went on to issue further admonishments as the half went on, allowing us all a peek into his thinking at a time when so many Spurs players are underperforming. It is possible that a man capable of such tremendous self-control on the touchline may have allowed himself to vent in order to demonstrate he was as frustrated with his team as the supporters. It appeared the players thrived on their manager’s pitch-side calmness earlier this season. Visible, audible feedback hasn’t exactly restored that spirit of adventure yet. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/3e23/live/68494770-0c4e-11ef-88c9-b971c42a2660.jpg

Saturday 11th May 2024 - Premier League
Tottenham Hotspur 2 (Porro 32, Van De Ven 82) Burnley 1

Report by Jonathan Jurejko, BBC Sport journalist.Whatever happens over the final week of the season, Ange Postecoglou's debut campaign can only be considered a successful step in the right direction. The style of the Australian manager has galvanised the club. The substance could still be a place in next season's Champions League. Tottenham's chances of overhauling Aston Villa remain slim, but breaking Burnley's resistance keeps them in the hunt for the top four. Even if they can't make up the four-point gap in the final two games, a spot in the Europa League is almost secured. As Postecoglou pointed out afterwards, this season was always viewed as a building block with a raft of players - including Saturday's goalscorers Pedro Porro and Micky van de Ven - far from seasoned Premier League players. So even if Spurs miss out on the Champions League, it feels like there could be exciting times ahead for this young Spurs squad.

Tottenham 2-1 Burnley: What Postecoglou said:
ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/594/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/11/4226556c-9eaa-41a9-aba8-0c1c48f7316f.jpg
Ange Postecoglou, spoke to BBC Sport after Tottenham's victory over Burnley: "We were dominant enough, their keeper was outstanding today and we had enough chances. "It's always difficult when you lose four matches in a row and it is only natural there will be a bit of anxiety and a bit of stress there. "For the most part I think we handled the game well and we finished the game strong. "It should have been a more comfortable victory but the most important thing is we won the game." Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, speaking to BBC Sport, on matchwinner Micky van de Ven: "He's not a bad player is he? He's outstanding and that's the exciting thing for me - it is his first year in Premier League football. "Same with Destiny [Udogie], Pape Sarr and [Guglielmo] Vicario, too. We have so much growth in this team and Micky is at the forefront of that. "I can't think of too many players who have made such an impact in their first year of Premier League football, and knowing he only really had one year in the Bundesliga. It's not like he's a seasoned professional. "He has had a few injury problems but when he's played he has been outstanding." Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou, speaking to BBC Sport, on their top-four challenge: "For us this was always going to be a year of building and it always unlikely we would get through it unscathed [with injuries]. "We've stayed competitive in the league and always tried to play our football. We've got two games to go and we want to finish strong." On his hopes of still making the top four: "It's about being the best we can be. Irrespective of where we finish it is important that we strengthen in the off season and I know the players who have been through this year will come back strongly."

Tottenham will listen to offers for 31-year-old Wales defender Ben Davies this summer. Tottenham are ready to give manager Ange Postecoglou the funds to sign a striker, centre-back and midfielder this summer.

Get Involved:Joseph, Finsbury Park: I'm an Arsenal fan but I'll be cheering on Tottenham tonight. It's a strange feeling but... come on you spurs! Dazza, Gooner: At ease Tottenham fans. We don't expect you to win tonight. I have more hope that West Ham do us a favour on Sunday. Congratulations due to Villa. Charlie: I can’t really understand the thought process of wanting Spurs fans to deny Arsenal winning the league at the cost of their own success. Spurs can qualify for the Champions League which will attract better players and bring in much wanted revenue. That could then bring continuity to future league positions. Dan: It's not about Arsenal. A win keeps our slim CL hopes alive. A draw guarantees 5th place. A defeat puts Man City in control of the PL. We aren't responsibile for what happens on the final day of the season. Richard, Lowestoft: As a Spurs fan, I want Spurs to win, even if it means Arsenal take the title. I'd rather a London team won, anyway, than Man City yet again (even if they were my granddad's team). Beating City would be a fantastic way to end an up and down season. Nigel, South Molton: As a Spurs fan I obviously don't want Arsenal to win the league. I also don't think that the Spurs squad is ready for Champions League next season so I'd be more than happy for City to win tonight. We'd have a chance of winning the Europa League. That'll do until the squad gets stronger. Sam: Spurs fan for thirty years. Would I rather we lose so Arsenal don’t win the league? Yes. Yes I would Nicholas: As a Spurs fan, I will happily watch us get beaten 5-0 with a smile on my face if it stops Arsenal winning the league...sorry Ange Skully: Literally no Spurs fan wants to not lose tonight. Big Ange showing he really doesn't understand English football yet Jon: 100% behind the team tonight for the win, especially as this result has no bearing on the title anyway. Arsenal will bottle it on the last day against West Ham regardless, it’s just what they do! Kayleigh: Tottenham to win tonight. Arsenal fans rejoice! But then City beat West Ham and Everton hold Arsenal on Sunday. City crowned champions for a fourth time in a row, by a point! Whatever happens... I cannot wait for this game! Peter: Even if Man City end up drawing tonight they could still overturn the goal difference against West Ham on Sunday. Would be an exciting final day shootout for who can score the most goals between them and Arsenal. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/14/a0991bb2-0131-4a03-ba0f-6ba173e7786a.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/14/fae7d058-63f0-4094-b66c-6dc9fa014902.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/14/e53c7cd2-c302-4469-a82c-b251cce26360.jpgichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/14/e340dfb9-d390-43ac-a489-7815243b4fc4.jpgKICK-OFF - Tottenham 0-0 Manchester City - And here we go. 'Foundations really fragile' at Spurs - Postecoglou..by Charlotte Coates, BBC Sport journalist.i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article32725190.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/0_Screenshot-2024-05-02-at-223942.jpgTottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou said the foundations are "really fragile" at the club after Tuesday's defeat by Manchester City ended their hopes of Champions League football. Spurs could have handed north London rivals Arsenal an advantage over City in the Premier League title race had they taken points off the visitors. Postecoglou's side needed to beat City at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to keep hopes of a top-four finish alive, but lost 2-0. "The foundations are really fragile," the Australian said. "The last 48 hours have shown me that. "It's inside the club, outside the club. Outside, inside, everywhere. It's been an interesting exercise. It's just my observations, mate." In the build-up to the match, Postecoglou was bewildered by some Spurs fans being happy to lose to City because it would damage Arsenal's title chances. Spurs put up a strong fight against City, but Erling Haaland's 51st-minute opener was met with home supporters chanting "are you watching Arsenal?" The atmosphere in north London was noticeably flat, and when Postecoglou was asked whether this influenced his players he said: "Of course it does. It is what it is. I can't dictate what people do. "They're allowed to express themselves any way they want. But yeah, when we've got late winners in games it's because the crowd's helped us." Postecoglou was captured on video arguing with a Spurs fan in the stadium, while two home supporters were filmed doing City's Poznan celebration shortly after the opening goal. When quizzed on the Spurs fans' chants, Postecoglou replied in a spiky media conference: "I'm not interested, mate. I just don't care. Maybe I'm out of step, but I just don't care, I just want to win. "I want to be successful at this football club, it's why I was brought in. So what other people, how they want to feel, and what their priorities are, are of zero interest to me. "I know what's important to build a winning team - that's what I need to concentrate on."

Rotten to the core aren't we mate. I just can't understand it mate. You know what I mean mate. Couldn't care less mate.

Report by Shamoon Hafez, BBC Sport football news reporter at Bramall Lane.Ange Postecoglou said he "loved every minute" of his first season in charge of Tottenham Hotspur after they ended their inconsistent campaign on a high by thumping the Premier League's bottom club Sheffield United to clinch a Europa League place. After a prolonged search for Antonio Conte's replacement, Postecoglou left Celtic to take over last summer and Spurs were touted as title contenders early in his reign but have fallen away to finish fifth. “Contrary to my general demeanour, I have loved every minute of it," said the Australian. "It is a great challenge in the Premier League, and taking over a big club. I have enjoyed it all season and I have some pretty lofty ambitions for the football club." The visitors were shaky early on at Bramall Lane as Ben Brereton Diaz fired over for the Blades in the opening two minutes and struck the post with an effort on the stretch. But Spurs scored the opener with their first attack as Son Heung-min picked out Dejan Kulusevski's run into the box and the midfielder drilled a cool finish into the far corner. The Sweden international should have added to his tally shortly after but was denied by Wes Foderingham's sharp save low down, while centre-back Cristian Romero struck a post. Pedro Porro smashed in a scorching first-time finish to double Spurs' lead in the second half, before Kulusevski managed to slide home his second of the game to condemn Sheffield United to their 28th defeat of an abysmal campaign. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/17e4/live/cfeb3780-0d48-11ef-82e8-cd354766a224.png

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/c043/live/ecb3f520-0913-11ef-82e8-cd354766a224.pngTottenham manager Ange Postecoglou will prioritise signing a new striker and defensive midfielder as he plans a summer clearout. Chelsea are no closer to agreeing a new deal with England midfielder and 24-year-old academy graduate Conor Gallagher, who is linked with Spurs and Aston Villa, and could be sold by the Blues to help with Premier League's profit and sustainability rules. Ange Postecoglou has asked the club for at least three new signings this summer. Spurs are ready to cash in on 25-year-old Brazil defender Emerson Royal, with Juventus, AC Milan and Bayern Munich all keen. Everton have placed a minimum fee of £80m on 21-year-old England centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite, who has attracted interest from Tottenham, Manchester Utd & Newcastle. Spurs are contemplating a summer move for Bournemouth's 26-year-old English striker Dominic Solanke. Tottenham have asked Chelsea about the availability of Trevoh Chalobah, 24, as they look to sign for the defender and 24-year-old midfielder Conor Gallagher. Tottenham are willing to offload 27-year-old Brazil forward Richarlison to make space for England and Bournemouth striker Dominic Solanke, 26. Tottenham are set to target Nottingham Forest and England winger Callum Hudson-Odoi, 22.

Spurs agree to extend Werner loan deal from RB Leipzig..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/7896/live/04484870-1d06-11ef-b2a5-db1af9c0862f.jpgTottenham have agreed a deal to extend Timo Werner's spell from RB Leipzig until the end of next season. The Germany forward made 14 appearances in all competitions and scored twice for Spurs after joining them on a temporary basis from the Bundesliga side in January. Under that arrangement Tottenham had the option to sign the 28-year-old permanently for £15m this summer, however, the new agreement will contain an £8.5m option to buy. Werner proved a useful addition to the Tottenham squad last term, bolstering manager Ange Postecoglou's attacking choices until a hamstring injury ruled him out of the final five Premier League matches of the campaign. Spurs eventually finished fifth and will compete in the Europa League next season. Werner has 24 goals from his 57 Germany caps, but last played for his country in a friendly defeat by Belgium in March 2023. He also scored 23 goals in 89 appearances during a two-year spell at Chelsea, winning the Champions League, Uefa Super Cup and Fifa Club World Cup, before rejoining Leipzig in 2022.
