Ended up being sold for less than £800,000. Richard: It's hard to think past Andy Carroll. An obscenely overpriced panic buy who obviously didn't want to come, who clearly wouldn't fit into our style of play and with an injury record that made Daniel Sturridge's look good. £20m loss in a year says it all. Mike: El-Hadji Diouf. Signed for £10m in 2002. Mostly remembered for annoying Gerrard and spitting in a Champions League game v Celtic. Sold for zero in 2005. Steve: Benteke. There is no argument. Big fee, was good for Villa then stunk the place out before being offloaded to Palace.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has promised more signings before the season to replace Henderson and 29-year-old Brazil midfielder Fabinho, who are poised to join the Saudi Pro League.
Liverpool are still in contact with Southampton over a deal for Belgium midfielder Romeo Lavia, 19, and are hopeful an agreement can be secured this month.

The new players have been fitting in well with the team and have looked really promising on the ball, but we have to work on our defence, which should not be conceding four goals against a team like this. Matt: Nice run out again but slightly perturbed over the defensive organisation. Last season was similar. I'm sure Jurgen Klopp is aware and on the ball with it. The midfield and attack are looking comfortable. Harry: Defence is leaking like a sieve as per all last season. When are we getting a couple of tough yet agile defenders? The transfer deadline in Europe's top leagues is on 1 September, while Saudi Arabia's runs until 20 September. It means the Middle East country's clubs can still add to their high-profile signings this summer when European clubs cannot. "It is massive, in the moment," said Klopp on Saudi Arabia's influence. "Pretty much the worst thing I think is that the transfer window in Saudi Arabia is open three weeks longer. "If I am right, I heard something like that, then at least in Europe that's not helpful. "Uefa or Fifa must find solutions for that. But in the end, at this moment, I don't know exactly what will happen." According to Transfermarkt, Saudi Pro League clubs have spent 409m euros (£352m) so far this summer - the fifth-highest total in world football and more than Spain's La Liga - 254m euros (£218m). The Premier League leads the way with 1.37bn euros (£1.17bn) spent, followed by Italy's Serie A (548m euros/£472m), France's Ligue 1 (458m euros/£394m) and Germany's Bundesliga (451m euros/£387m). BBC Sport understands leading Premier League clubs have been told the Saudi Pro League has set aside funds to turn the country into a football force over the next 10 years. Four of the leading Saudi Arabian clubs were taken over by the country's Public Investment Fund in June. Liverpool have already been affected by players moving to Saudi Arabia, with midfielders Jordan Henderson and Fabinho joining Al-Ettifaq and Al-Ittihad respectively. They are part of a growing group of players to make the switch to the country, with Brazil forward Roberto Firmino having signed for Al-Ahli after his Reds contract expired in the summer. Al-Ahli have also signed Senegal keeper Edouard Mendy from Chelsea and winger Riyad Mahrez from Manchester City. Al-Ittihad, meanwhile, have brought in former Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema, ex-Chelsea midfielder N'Golo Kante and Portuguese forward Jota from Celtic. Saudi newspaper Al Riyadiah claims Al-Ittihad made an approach and offered a two-year contract worth £155m to Salah on top of a £52m transfer fee. Salah, 31, signed a new three-year deal last summer which runs until June 2025. "Mohamed remains committed to LFC," said Salah's agent Ramy Abbas in a social media post. Lavia joined Southampton from Manchester City last yearLiverpool have had a third bid rejected for Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia. The latest offer for the 19-year-old Belgian is believed to have been about £46m including add-ons, with Southampton reportedly wanting £50m. Lavia was an unused substitute when Southampton started their Championship campaign with a 2-1 win against Sheffield Wednesday on Friday. He joined Saints from Manchester City last summer for £10.5m. Lavia made 34 appearances in all competitions for Southampton in 2022-23 but was unable to help them avoid relegation from the Premier League to the Championship. Liverpool are looking to reinforce their midfield with a third signing in that area of the pitch following Fabinho, Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all leaving the club this summer.
