The Argentina playmaker played a key role as Brighton finished sixth in the Premier League last season to qualify for Europe for the first time. The 24-year-old also helped his country win the World Cup in December. Liverpool need to add to their midfield with James Milner, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain leaving this summer. They were priced out of a move for Borussia Dortmund's England teenager Jude Bellingham, who is a target for Real Madrid. Mac Allister played a prominent part as the Seagulls secured European football for the first time in their 122-year history. He made 40 appearances and scored 12 goals, mostly in a number 10 role but also at times in deeper midfield positions. Brighton manager Roberto de Zerbi last month said Mac Allister was a "great player" who deserved to "play at a higher level". Mac Allister joined Brighton from Argentinos Juniors in January 2019 and immediately went back to the Buenos Aires club on loan. He played his first match for the Seagulls in a goalless draw against Wolverhampton Wanderers in March 2020 and has since made 112 appearances for the club, scoring 20 goals. Judge Paul Greenwood considered Barnes’ case at an Insolvency and Companies Court hearing in London. HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) had lodged a bankruptcy petition. An HMRC official had last month told another judge that tax owed had been paid and Judge Greenwood on Wednesday dismissed the petition. Barnes was not at the hearing. Another judge had adjourned an earlier hearing – in February – to allow “settlement negotiations” to take place. Megan Vanderhook, who represented HMRC at the February hearing, had indicated that Barnes owed at least £200,000. Barnes, 59, played for Watford, Liverpool and Newcastle. He also won 79 England caps between 1983 and 1995 and was head coach at Celtic after ending his playing career.

Liverpool sold the ground in 2019 to housing developer Torus and moved to a new training site in Kirkby in 2020. The club will also use Melwood for the girls' academy and community projects. "Now is the right time to make this move," said managing director Andy Hughes, who described it as "a new chapter of Liverpool's commitment to our women's first team and academy". Torus' plans to build up to 160 houses on the site were met with 100 letters of opposition and a petition with 450 signatures. "We have always taken the views of the local community seriously," said Hughes. 'A significant step' - analysis, Emma Sanders, BBC SportLiverpool have fallen behind their traditional English rivals in the women's game since their WSL title successes in 2013 and 2014, but this is a significant step back in the right direction. Now one of the biggest clubs in the world will have a training centre befitting the women's professional team representing them. When Jurgen Klopp's men's side moved to a new training ground, the women remained at Tranmere Rovers' Solar Campus, sharing facilities with the League Two club. Several sites for a new training ground were considered across Merseyside but, although an earlier move was intended, Liverpool's patience has paid off and they have reached the most desirable outcome. Further investment in Melwood's facilities is expected to take place, so the players will begin pre-season elsewhere before moving in well in advance of the 2023-24 WSL season. They will continue to play their home matches at Tranmere's Prenton Park.

The 37-year-old won six major honours including the Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League during his eight years at Anfield. "He's an excellent addition for us and I'm sure he will help to bring us to an even higher level." The Seagulls will play in Europe for the first time next season after a sixth-placed league finish secured a Europa League spot. Brighton see Milner's experience as being potentially invaluable in their attempt to cement another finish in the top 10 of the Premier League after two superb seasons. Technical director David Weir said: "His experience speaks for itself with the amount of games he has played and the trophies he has won throughout a decorated career. "These games include European competition, which will be of huge value to us as we embark on our first season in Europe." Milner joined Liverpool in 2015, when the Reds were managed by Brendan Rodgers, and went on to help the club win their first Premier League title in 2020. After beginning his career at Leeds United, he went on to play for Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Manchester City. During his five years at City he helped the club land their first top-flight title for 44 years, in addition to winning the FA Cup, League Cup and Community Shield. Milner has made the third most appearances in Premier League history, with 619 in all, behind only Gareth Barry (652) and Ryan Giggs (632). He also won 61 caps for England, representing his country at the 2010 and 2014 World Cups.

The 43-year-old former Rangers boss has been out of a job since he was sacked by Aston Villa in October. Ex-Liverpool and England captain Gerrard was pictured in Saudi Arabia earlier in June and reportedly made an offer by Al-Ettifaq. "I was invited over there to look at a potential offer, which I did," he said. Speaking on Channel 4 before England's Euro 2024 Qualifier against North Macedonia, Gerrard added: "I have been analysing that over the last couple of days. But, as we stand right now, I won't be taking that offer up." Gerrard led Villa to 13 wins from 40 games during his 11 months in charge, after arriving from Rangers in November 2021. After ending his playing career in 2016, he took his first steps in senior management with Rangers in 2018 and led the club to their first Scottish Premiership title in 10 years.
