Tbh I think that was a lost opportunity for England. They were in with a great chance. But that’s how cricket goes sometimes, over 5 days highs and lows and fortunes can change. Most of the cricket I’m interested in, Test Matches for Men and Women and any match Somerset play has given me great entertainment over the past few weeks. And today I’ve just got back from Taunton and seeing a great match (from a Somerset pov). We looked beaten on Sunday night, fought back well Monday and absolutely smashed Nottinghamshire in batting, bowling and fielding today in front of a big Championship crowd. To win by 399 runs, our biggest Championship win by runs since 1937.
Brilliant.

The Ashes: England beat Australia in second T20 to keep series hopes alive..By Ffion Wynne, BBC Sport.ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/1522/production/_130301450_ecclestone.jpgEngland kept their Ashes hopes alive with a thrilling three-run victory over Australia in the must-win second T20 at The Oval. Danni Wyatt's 76 from 46 balls propelled England to 186-9, their highest ever T20 total against world champions Australia. Australia needed an unlikely 22 to win from the final over and fell short on 183-8, despite Ellyse Perry's two sixes from the last two balls. England trail 6-2 in the multi-format series, and need a total of nine points in order to regain the Ashes. England captain Heather Knight, speaking to BBC Test Match Special: "It was a little bit of a psychological hurdle for us to get over. I think the way we've stayed really positive and been really resilient after two close losses has been really outstanding. "Hopefully we can push on and get something at Lord's. We know Australia will come back very hard at us and we'll try and win this T20 series 2-1." England's Danni Wyatt on TMS: "Hopefully this is the start now. Not to get too far ahead of ourselves, we're going to celebrate tonight. To beat Australia is an incredible achievement. We'll see what we can improve upon and go again."

England beat Australia by five wickets in a rain-affected third T20 of the multi-format Ashes at Lord's, inflicting a first series defeat on the world champions since 2017. The result also narrows the overall points-based Ashes scoreline to 6-4 with three one-day internationals remaining, each worth two points. England were set a revised target of 119 in 14 overs and reached it with four balls remaining, set up by Alice Capsey's electric 46 from 23 balls. They suffered a late wobble, losing Nat Sciver-Brunt and Heather Knight with just two runs needed, before Danielle Gibson emphatically reverse-swept her first ball for four. The match also set a new record attendance for a women's bilateral fixture in England, with 21,610 packing inside Lord's. Earlier, Australia finished their 20 overs with 156-7 before rain delayed the start of England's innings.

With her first ball, she reverse sweeps Jonassen and it races away for four! England win by five wickets!ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/7/8/be5e6b3d-42b4-487f-b143-108e01d0e1d1.jpg................................................................................................................................. England captain Heather Knight on Test Match Special: "We talked yesterday about wanting a series win in the T20s and I'm really proud of the girls and the way we went about it. The pitch is actually quite different to what we thought, it can be quite slow and spin dominates at Lord's, but it actually felt like seam was quite hard to get away, hence juggling the bowlers a little bit. The really pleasing thing is that when someone doesn't have a great day someone else is standing up and we're able to have a real team performance. "I thought the target was a bit high, I was hoping for a bit less! With a shortened game it is what it is, we were just preparing for anything. It's not that nice waiting around when you're in the game. The way Sophia Dunkley and Danni Wyatt started really took the intent to Australia and made the most of the four-over powerplay. "Alice Capsey was awesome. She probably hasn't played how she wanted to in the first two but to play like that and take the game on is exactly how we want her to play so I'm really pleased for her." More from Heather Knight talking to TMS: "I haven't actually won many games at Lord's but today was about soaking it in a little bit as well and trying to enjoy the atmosphere. The support has been so good, we've loved it. It is credit to both teams the cricket that has been played and to get people out and momentum behind the series. There is still a long way to go. "The way we've fought back in this series has been really pleasing. we've felt like we're not far away and once we'd got that win it felt like we'd got over that hurdle a little bit. Hopefully we can keep that going. "Australia are still a very good side. They keep coming at you. They've got a lot of depth and the amount of all-rounders they've got means they can use different match-ups when they need it but there is just belief in our side that we're playing some really good cricket and matching them cricket wise. In the past it was probably about mentality and I think we've worked really hard on that leading into the series and the fruits of our labours are starting to show." More from Heather Knight talking to TMS: "It was a really important toss to win, it is definitely a good ground to chase on. Under lights and a bit of rain it probably skidded on a little bit but I still think it was a really good wicket all the way through. "I was a bit frustrated to get out there. I'm not quite sure how that was hitting the stumps! We just wanted to get it done and Dani Gibson, I love that she came out and reverse-swept her first ball. That is the sort of confidence we want in a player and to play to their strengths. "The ODI series is a new format but I still don't think we've played the perfect game yet. The final over cost us quite a lot tonight, with the drops in there, and things like that. We've fielded so well in the series but tonight was probably our worse night. It is just about flipping formats, getting our skills where they need to be and keeping the momentum going."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/14AF6/production/_130162748_gettyimages-1498667032.jpg Lauren FilerTammy Beaumont and Lauren Filer have been picked in England's squad for the ODI Ashes series against Australia after missing out on the T20 series. Beaumont scored a record 208 and Filer took four wickets as England lost by 89 runs in the solitary Test last month. The three-match ODI series follows the hosts' first T20 series win over Australia since 2017. "We're pleased to welcome Tammy and Lauren back," said head coach Jon Lewis. "Tammy showed her quality during the Test match with her double-hundred while Lauren offers us real pace in our bowling alongside Issy [Wong]. "We were delighted with our T20 series win and look forward to the next stage of the Ashes with everything to play for." Batter Beaumont, 32, has 103 ODI caps for England, while bowler Filer, 22, will be making her international debut in the 50-over format. The first of three ODIs between the sides take place at the Seat Unique Stadium, Bristol on 12th July, before matches at the Ageas Bowl, Southampton on 16th July and the County Ground, Taunton on 18th July. England trail Australia 6-4 in the points-based Ashes series with each ODI win worth two points each. England squad for ODI Ashes series: Heather Knight (capt), Tammy Beaumont, Lauren Bell, Alice Capsey, Kate Cross, Charlie Dean, Sophia Dunkley, Sophie Ecclestone, Lauren Filer, Danielle Gibson, Sarah Glenn, Amy Jones, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Issy Wong, Danielle Wyatt.

The Ashes: England prepare for Ashes 'great escape' in must-win ODI series..By Ffion Wynne, BBC Sport.ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/59FB/production/_130353032_0edb80c191f758945b3a4e71f82c09829493c589.jpgThere is something about England's cricket teams - they seem to enjoy being in must-win territory. Ben Stokes' men lost the first two Tests only to fight back at Headingley, while Australia surged ahead in the women's multi-format series with a 6-0 points lead, leaving England's chances seemingly in tatters. But Heather Knight's side have made history since, becoming the first team to complete a series win against Australia's women since 2017. Impressive T20 victories in front of record crowds at the Oval and Lord's delivered that 'series within a series' success. The job is not done, though, and the task ahead is far from simple despite this resurgence. England have got to win all three one-day internationals to regain the Ashes (or two, if one is washed out or tied) against a team who have won 41 of their last 42 games in the format. The 50-over leg of the series begins in Bristol on Wednesday. If England can turn their fortunes around, it will be one of cricket's greatest comebacks - considering the deficit, the strength of opposition and the fact England have not beaten Australia in an ODI since 2017. "We were still upbeat even after the two defeats," said Knight, whose side are now 6-4 in arrears. "The first win at the Oval was a mental hurdle for us to get over after going behind on points, so once we did that, it gave us that extra bit of belief and reassurance. "It's been interesting to see how our series has pretty much paralleled the men's - we've both lost our first two games, but hopefully we can keep being successful and we can both pull off the great escape." ODI format could 'rally' Australiaichef.bbci.co.uk/images/ic/640x360/p0c1b3wd.jpgWhile England may have the momentum, world champions Australia are the ones with a point to prove. They are in alien territory, despite holding a two-point lead, as losing even just one game is not in their DNA - let alone back-to-back defeats. Captain Alyssa Healy has admitted they have not played their best cricket yet in the series, which in itself is a stark reminder of their brilliance that they can take a six-point lead when undercooked. "We've probably been off again a little bit for all three of the T20s," Australia head coach Shelley Nitschke said after the Lord's defeat. "England are playing good cricket, so we certainly know we have to play really good cricket as well. "It's not going to be an easy task for us." ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/3F91/production/_107337261_healy2.jpgKnight said the pressure is on Australia, as reigning champions and knowing they only need to win one more game to retain the Ashes, but admits playing their opposition's strongest format last could suit the tourists. "I think the change of format will rally Australia - they are very strong in ODIs," said Knight. "I'm sure they'll come at us hard, we knew that after the Oval, but our job is to keep them under pressure and play our best cricket." Another key factor in England's success has been the support from the crowds. The attendances of more than 20,000 at both the Oval and Lord's are being followed by sold-out ODIs at Bristol, Southampton and Taunton. England's XI could see the return of Lauren Filer, whose raw pace impressed in the Test match, while Tammy Beaumont - a double centurion in the Test - will be joined by Sophia Dunkley at the top of the order after Emma Lamb's omission from the squad.

Captain Heather Knight finished unbeaten on 75 as England reached their target of 264 with 11 balls remaining - their highest successful run-chase in the format. England lost three late wickets but number 10 Kate Cross remained unfazed, smashing four fours in her stunning cameo of 19. It is England's first ODI victory over the world champions since 2017. The points-based series is beautifully poised at 6-6 with two ODIs to play, of which Australia only need to win one to retain the Ashes. England started their chase in phenomenal style, reaching 84-1 from the 10-over powerplay with opener Tammy Beaumont scoring 47 from 42 balls, and the aggressive Alice Capsey blitzing a 34-ball 40. Australia were uncharacteristically sloppy in the field, gifting England 16 extras in the first four overs as loose balls were punished to the boundary with ease. Spinners Ash Gardner and Georgia Wareham were instrumental in dragging control back for Australia but Knight held firm as the middle to lower order stumbled, eventually finding company in Cross for a match-winning partnership of 32. England were also ragged in the field, dropping five catches and missing a stumping as Beth Mooney was dropped on 19 and finished unbeaten on 81, but Australia's batters failed to fully capitalise. Australia, who had a lead of 6-0, had previously lost just one from 42 ODIs, and have now lost three consecutive games after England's 2-1 T20 series win. .................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................... It was tough, I don't think I middled one until I got to 30. "I thought it was starting to slip away towards the end when we kept losing wickets and the crowd really kept us in it. Kate Cross, what a hero. She was really nervous. But we just broke it down in 10s and to beat a good side, I still think we can be a lot better, I don't think we've been our best. "The fight in this side is just remarkable." On her own innings: "I was trying to keep it in, stay in my bubble and keep really calm. It was a tricky wicket, I had to have a simple plan, find a way of scoring. It was difficult to be fluent and rotate the ball around so it pure relief at the end. We kept losing wickets and making it hard for ourselves so just really pleased. "I would not have enjoyed watching that game at all so I was glad to be out there and finishing it off." On Kate Cross' scoop: "It's her best shot (scoop), fine leg was up, I had a chat with her and she executed it brilliantly. That took the pressure off. We kept saying to each other, 'Lauren Bell is in next!' Poor Lauren was very nervous. Really pleased for Kate, she has probably not had the best day but is one of the most resilient people that I know so to see her do that was outstanding. "There's a lot we can do better. First 10-15 overs we were a little bit off it. It was easiest time to score but if you bowled straight you could make it hard for the batters with variations. "It was not our best day in the field, we still have more in there, but we're still winning and keeping the momentum going. The way Tammy and Alice batted was a clear tactic from us to take the powerplay on because it's the easiest time to score and they did it brilliantly. "We had lots of people standing up again which is really pleasing." "We gained real momentum, credit to both teams, it's been an awesome series. I wouldn't mind a few less nail biters to be sure. On winning runs: "I wanted to be there at the end. It was pure joy at the end. My home club, lots of family and friends there and I didn't want to go back to the dressing room with a few runs left. "We've kept growing as a team but there's still a long way to go in terms of our growth. We've shown clarity under pressure and stayed calm in the big moments, I think we're really growing as a side. We know Australia are a brilliant team and we have to go again at Southampton, but the support from the side was great. I had to try and not get too excited when they were singing 'Hey Jude' at the end and try to stay calm. It's been awesome and the support has really helped up, hopefully it continues." England captain Heather Knight to BBC TMS: "An amazing atmosphere. I had to stop myself from singing along and staying calm. "Credit to both sides. I wouldn't mind a slightly less close one, but it was an awesome game and I was calmer out in the middle where I could influence the game rather than in the dressing room. "Kate hasn't had the best game so to come back and win the game for us is outstanding. "It feels like the momentum is really with us. I was trying to stay calm, but the way we took on the power play, Tammy and Alice were outstanding. We task those girls with getting the bulk of the runs and that made it easier for us taking on the spinners in the middle." On Alice Capsey's bowling: "She was awesome. The pitch was hard to play against if you put it in the right areas. I kept thinking of taking her off, but she wouldn't go for many so I kept her on. She hasn't bowled much in ODI cricket but she just rolled with it. Lauren Bell deserves a mention as well. It wasn't an easy place to bowl with the win, so she was great." The series rolls on to Southampton on Sunday. It should be a cracker! Join us again then!

The Ashes: England and Australia prepare for epic Ashes battle with series on the line..By Ffion Wynne, BBC Sport.ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/CD44/production/_130384525_englandaustralia.jpgEngland's Tammy Beaumont (left) and Australia's Ashleigh Gardner..Very few thought Heather Knight's England could get to this position - levelling the multi-format points-based Ashes series after Australia raced ahead with a 6-0 lead. Knight and England were perhaps among the only ones who did believe. The captain said her team would "fly" after overcoming the psychological hurdle of getting one win on the board against the world champions, which they did in the second T20 at The Oval. But England are not just flying. They are soaring, and in a fascinating twist, Australia are the ones succumbing to the pressure. There was a sense after England's 2-1 series win in the T20 leg that they had already achieved enough, that they had exceeded expectations and now normality would resume in the 50-over format. After all, it is Australia's strength: they are world champions, and England had not previously beaten them in the format since 2017. And in a fitting coincidence, that win came at Bristol, also where Knight's side reached parity with Australia with a tense two-wicket win. England still face a tough task, needing to win their two remaining games (or one, if the other is tied or washed out), while just one win sees current holders Australia retain the trophy. But despite the hype, England are keeping their feet firmly on the ground. "We're not taking them lightly, they're not pushovers whatsoever," said England batter Tammy Beaumont. "But we're playing good cricket. We've gone toe-to-toe with them. "We've always felt we can beat them, but in the past we probably wouldn't have thought we could achieve that after going 6-0 down." ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/13E8C/production/_130384518_ecf8a609424f774fab93b1828b922c459915e80d.jpgEngland's aggressive style of play has provided much of the thrill throughout the series, sparked by Lauren Filer's raw pace in the Test match and accelerated by the brutal hitting of Alice Capsey and Danni Wyatt with the white ball. And there is plenty to improve, too - England dropped five chances at Bristol and missed a stumping, and ended up chasing at least 40 more than they needed to. But throughout it all, Knight has remained calm, Sophie Ecclestone has been world-class and quite ominously for Australia, Nat Sciver-Brunt is yet to really fire. The world's best preparing for the unknownPerhaps the most intriguing element of it all is how Australia are going to handle the pressure. While England are basking in the joy of unfamiliar territory, there is no precedent for how this Australia side will react. After the T20 defeat that allowed England to creep back in to contention, captain Alyssa Healy said it was a "kick up the bum" - but the performance that followed at Bristol suggested the kick had not quite been hard enough. They have built themselves a reputation of a team with immaculately high standards under skipper Meg Lanning, who is absent from the tour for medical reasons. They grind bowlers down with the bat, frustrate batters with their consistency and pull off athletic saves in the field when everyone in the ground is assuming that it's gone for four. But in the first ODI, balls slipped through legs to the boundary, fielders were giving up on achievable chases (for them), bowlers gave away 17 wides and some batters threw away their wickets cheaply. It is difficult to say whether this is down to Lanning's absence, or whether England's aggression has landed a psychological blow. And yet, Australia's brilliance is shown in the fact that they are probably still favourites, and that even in their poor performances, England have had to work very hard for the wins. They are not be used to being the wounded tiger, and England, so often the prey, are not used to being the hunter. History beckons for England, or else world order will be restored.

Women's Ashes: Nat Sciver-Brunt's century in vain as Australia retain urn..By Ffion Wynne, BBC Sport in Southampton.ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/480/cpsprodpb/13CB7/production/_130397018_australiawin.jpgAustralia retained the Women's Ashes with a dramatic three-run victory over England, who so nearly pulled off a remarkable victory through Nat Sciver-Brunt's masterful unbeaten century. Sciver-Brunt, who scored 111 off 99 balls, dragged England from 203-7 to a position where they needed 15 runs from the last over and five off the final ball. However, Australia and Jess Jonassen, who bowled the final over, held their nerve to retain the urn with one match to spare by virtue of being the holders. The points-based series, which is now 8-6 in favour of Australia, concludes at Taunton on Tuesday. Australia owe plenty to number eight batter Georgia Wareham, who smashed 26 from the last over of the tourists' innings, bowled by Lauren Bell, to drag them from 240-7 with three overs remaining. While it was a match-defining over, England were also left to rue another sloppy performance in the field, dropping all-rounder Ellyse Perry three times in her innings of 91. In the second ODI at Bristol, England levelled the series with their highest-ever run chase and were set the task of breaking that record again to keep their hopes alive once more. England started positively, with opener Tammy Beaumont continuing her fine form with 60 from 62 balls before Australia's spinners once again proved the difference. All seven England wickets fell to spin as leg-spinner Alana King and off-spinner Ash Gardner took three each to unravel the middle order. Sciver-Brunt stood firm with a chanceless knock, her third unbeaten century in her past four ODI innings against Australia, but she slumped to her knees in devastation as she could only manage a single from the final ball. England can still draw the series with a win in the final ODI, but were visibly distraught by the defeat having dragged themselves back into contention after Australia initially raced into a 6-0 lead in the points-based series. Australia captain Alyssa Healy: "It was a really, really good game of cricket. Both sides really hung in there and Nat Sciver-Brunt, yet again, played an incredible innings - I thought she was going to take it away from us at the end. "But full credit to our girls, they showed all their grit and determination again and we got ourselves over the line. "To know that the Ashes are coming home with us is hugely exciting." ichef.bbci.co.uk/images/ic/640x360/p0c1b3wd.jpgEngland captain Heather Knight on BBC Test Match Special: "It's been a ridiculous series, and has to go down as the best ever in history. "How Nat played to get so close was brilliant. To nearly chase down that total was really good. "Our focus now is to win both white-ball series. We're gutted we weren't able to keep the momentum." ichef.bbci.co.uk/images/ic/640x360/p0djj4fh.jpg

TUESDAY 18th JULY 2023 - 3rd WOMEN'S ONE DAY INTERNATIONAL - At The Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton.
England v Australia - 1pm - Australia Women won the toss and decided to field...
England captain Heather Knight: "I was going to have a bowl as well but I don't mind too much.
"It's usually a pretty good wicket down here at Taunton, the runs away pretty fast so we'll try to put a good score on the board.
"We've got the opportunity to win (the ODI series) 2-1 and that's all we've talked about.
"It's quite a quick turnaround with just two days between games and travel but we've regrouped brilliantly. Obviously quite disappointed losing such a close game the other day, it can take a bit out of you.
"It's all about our character today with the ODI series on the line. We still feel like we haven't played our best cricket so we want to show this very good Taunton crowd what we can do today.
"Unfortunately Sarah Glenn has had to have her appendix out so Charlie Dean comes in. Gutted for Glenny but a brilliant player to come in."
Teams
England: Sophia Dunkley, Tammy Beaumont, Heather Knight (c), Nat Sciver-Brunt, Alice Capsey, Danni Wyatt, Amy Jones (wk), Sophie Ecclestone, Charlie Dean, Kate Cross, Lauren Bell.

Women's Ashes: England bowler Sarah Glenn misses final ODI after surgery..By Ffion Wynne, BBC Sport at Taunton.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/A425/production/_130412024_glenn.jpg Sarah Glenn has won 60 caps for EnglandSarah Glenn will miss England's final Women's Ashes match against Australia at Taunton on Tuesday after having surgery for appendicitis. Leg-spinner Glenn was replaced by Charlie Dean for the third one-day international in the series. Glenn, 23, had played in all of England's Ashes white-ball fixtures, taking six wickets across three T20s and the first two ODIs. She is recovering well from surgery and will be at Tuesday's match. Glenn is set to play for London Spirit in The Hundred, which starts in August. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and Hundred medical teams will evaluate Glenn's health over the coming days before setting a timescale for her return. ichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/0713/production/_130411810_7046fb77df21e7519ca85be68d6ce1d88996d975.jpg

Was in Taunton today (not watching the cricket) and went past the cricket ground before gates were open and there were queues stretching all down the street and the car parks were full. When I left at 4.45 it was bright and sunny and you could see them playing so surprised and to get home and see they went off for rain. Going to be a tight finish.
