'Difficult day': Davie apologises over sport programming..BBC director general Tim Davie says it has been a "difficult day" as he apologised for the disruption to BBC sports programming. "I’m sorry audiences have been affected and they haven’t got the programming," he told me, in an interview in Washington DC. "As a keen sports fan I know to miss programming is a real blow and I’m sorry about that. We are working very hard to resolve this situation and make sure we get output on air." He did not want to go into detail about discussions or if he had spoken to Lineker in last 24 hours. But he said: "Everyone wants to calmly resolve the situation. Gary Lineker’s the best in the business - that’s not for debate." ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/3/11/97fe59d4-9736-4101-9f7a-053d156bf64c.jpg BBC director general will not resign over Lineker row..Tim Davie, the BBC's director general, says he will not resign over the fallout from Gary Lineker being asked to step back from the Match of the Day programme over impartiality. Speaking to the BBC's Nomia Iqbal in the US, he was asked if he should resign over the crisis - he said he would not. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/3/11/2f0e85dc-cd12-4003-8dfd-75eb06d69065.jpg

Davie should resign since by prosecuting the Government's anti-free speech agenda in this manner he is failing to adhere to the BBC's desire to be "impartial". Plus as an ex Conservative political candidate he should never have been appointed in the first place if impartiality is the be all and end all that he and the BBC claim it to be. If he doesn't resign, he should be sacked for the colossal balls up he has made of this issue.
They (BBC and UKIP Government) are making an example out of Lineker because they don't like his views which he has expressed via his own social media. They don't do the same for right wing media personalities. As a freelance media presenter they do not own his soul. Where does this invasion of his privacy stop? Should he be sacked for airing a political opinion down the pub as taking Davie's ludicrous approach to this matter to the extreme is where this ends up.
I've been a strong supporter of the BBC all my life but cannot do so at the moment. In my opinion they should draw the line at what people say during the jobs they are paid to do and no further. If Lineker had made these comments on MOTD then they may have had grounds to challenge him as he is not doing what he is paid to do. Attempting to censure him on his own social media however is overstepping the mark.

Lineker to return to air this weekend after BBC deal reached..ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/3/13/76688a24-da18-48d1-97ef-e913397c1270.jpgGary Lineker and BBC management have reached a deal to get the presenter back on air, after the weekend's disruption to BBC Sport schedules. Director General Tim Davie says: “Gary is a valued part of the BBC and I know how much the BBC means to Gary, and I look forward to him presenting our coverage this coming weekend.” In a statement, Davie also announces the BBC will launch an independent review into its social media guidelines, with a particular focus on freelancers outside news and current affairs like Lineker. Gary Lineker says in the statement: "I am glad that we have found a way forward. I support this review and look forward to getting back on air." Davie apologises and recognises 'grey areas' in social media guidanceIn his statement, BBC Director General Tim Davie apologises again for loss of BBC Sport programming over the weekend. He says: "Everyone recognises this has been a difficult period for staff, contributors, presenters and, most importantly, our audiences. I apologise for this." Davie also recognises the "potential confusion caused by the grey areas of the BBC’s social media guidance" that was introduced in 2020, adding he wants to "get matters resolved and our sport content back on air". He goes on to emphasise how impartiality is "important to the BBC and the public as a whole, noting the corporation has a "commitment to impartiality in its Charter and a commitment to freedom of expression". BBC launches review into social media guidanceThe BBC Director General Tim Davie has announced there will be review, led by an independent expert reporting to the BBC, on its existing social media guidance, with a particular focus on how it applies to freelancers outside news and current affairs. The director general says the BBC and Gary are "in favour of such a review." The BBC’s current social media guidance will remain in place while the work is completed and who will carry the review out will be announced "shortly", Davie adds. ..................................................................................................................................................................................................... Lineker's next appearance for the BBC will be the coverage of the FA Cup quarter-final clash between Manchester City and Burnley. The match will kick off on Saturday at 17:45 GMT, with coverage from the Etihad Stadium on BBC One starting at 17:25 GMT. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/3/13/10e978c9-8ab9-4bc9-a5c8-8946a5c42d08.jpg

Keir Starmer: BBC chair's position increasingly untenable..ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/3/13/0e9b1443-fbdd-4563-8875-321f5b0b4712.pngWe've also been hearing from Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer this morning. He has accused the BBC of being in a mess and repeated that its Chairman Richard Sharp's position is becoming "increasingly untenable". Speaking to journalists just before it was announced Lineker would return to Match of the Day, Starmer says this is a "mess of the BBC's own making". Starmer tells broadcasters the public would wonder: "How on Earth is he still in position but Gary Lineker has been taken off air?" An ongoing KC-led review into Richard Sharp’s appointment as BBC chairman is investigating whether he failed to properly disclose details of his involvement in the facilitation of an £800,000 loan guarantee for the then-prime minister Boris Johnson. He has denied any involvement in the arrangement of a loan for Johnson. The BBC is also conducting its own internal review over any potential conflicts of interest Sharp may have in his current role as BBC chairman. ...................................................................................................................................................................................................... Lessons for the BBC from this - Alastair CampbellAlastair Campbell, politics podcast host and once Tony Blair's director of communications, has been speaking to the BBC about Lineker's return as Match of the Day host. Campbell's Rest is Politics podcast is produced by Goalhanger Podcasts, a company co-owned by Lineker. He says it's "very good news" and a "complete and total vindication for Gary Lineker." Director general Tim Davie handled a "very difficult situation very badly at first, but has then recognised the mistake the BBC has made and has sought to rectify it, and that's a good thing." There are lessons in this for the BBC, he adds, as this is about "much more" than Gary Lineker. "When you are subject to this right-wing political pressure, you should resist it and stand up to it, not pander to it."

Difficult few days 'don't compare to fleeing war' - Lineker..A final thought: however difficult the last few days have been, it simply doesn’t compare to having to flee your home from persecution or war to seek refuge in a land far away. It’s heartwarming to have seen the empathy towards their plight from so many of you." Gary Lineker Lineker thanks Davie for his 'understanding'
Gary Lineker has thanked BBC Director General Tim Davie's "understanding during this difficult period". The Match of the Day presenter writes Davie "has an almost impossible job keeping everybody happy, particularly in the area of impartiality". "I am delighted that we’ll continue to fight the good fight, together," Lineker adds. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/490/cpsprodpb/12883/production/_128970957_555baa7cbb6c8d2d5d5163f41d669ab16d8925ec.jpg

There's no doub t that Linkeer is a fine presenter, an all round good sport and lots of other things besides. But I thought that he was wrong to place a political text message. If he's so unhappy with political decisions made by others then his remedy is obvious - stand in an election himself. Mind you, he'd have to say goodbye to the incredible payments he draws down...

Ian Wright says 'heads have got to roll' over the Gary Lineker row..ichef.bbci.co.uk/images/ic/640x360/p09hgckl.jpgIan Wright has criticised how the BBC dealt with the Gary Lineker controversy and believes "heads have got to roll." Last week, Lineker was suspended from his presenting Match of the Day due to an impartiality row with the broadcaster over his tweet that the government's controversial asylum policy on small boats was similar to language used in 1930's Germany. The former Arsenal and England player supported his MOTD colleague alongside Alan Shearer by boycotting the programme which led to last week's show being reduced in length with no presenters or pundits. On his podcast Wrighty's House, the 59-year-old previously vowed to leave the BBC if the broadcaster decided to fire Lineker. As the drama was playing out, he said: "If they do, the BBC get rid of Gary Lineker, I’m out. I’m gone, I’m not staying there" Since then, Lineker and the BBC “navigated a way” through the disagreement for him to return as host. Now, Wright has discussed the matter again on his podcast where he described how the BBC "made a hot mess," out of it. "For me, they made a hot mess. I’m telling you, this is all from high up, I can’t blame my man [head of BBC TV Sport] Philip Bernie, the BBC Sports team. All of this is over a tweet," he said. "At some stage surely, heads have got to roll… the mismanagement levels of this is, I can’t even tell you, but it’s done, everybody knows how I feel about it." Wright added: "I’m just pleased that it’s kind of come to something." Elsewhere, Lineker has called out a Tory MP for falsely claiming he called people "Nazis".
