Heath Streak obituary: Zimbabwe fast bowler was key player in successful - but politically charged era..By Mark Mitchener, BBC Sport.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/5830/production/_129867522_heath_streak_queen_getty.jpg Heath Streak was in his prime at the 1999 World Cup in England, rubbing shoulders with cricketing royalty such as India legend Sachin Tendulkar, and actual royalty in Queen Elizabeth IIHeath Streak, who has died aged 49, will be remembered as Zimbabwe's best bowler of all time, and a key player during their most successful spell in international cricket. Streak, who had been having treatment for cancer, remains his country's highest wicket-taker in both Test and one-day international cricket. Like many Zimbabwean players of that era, his playing days were often overshadowed by wide-ranging political issues. But after a series of coaching appointments at home and abroad, his career was effectively ended in 2021 with a ban from the International Cricket Council (ICC) following corruption charges. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/DAD1/production/_129871065_streak_atherton_getty.jpgIn 65 Tests, Streak took 216 wickets - more than twice the number of any other Zimbabwe player - with a further 239 scalps in 189 ODIsHeath Hilton Streak was born in Bulawayo in March 1974, in a country then known as Rhodesia - for which his father Denis had played at first-class level. Growing up on the family ranch, young Heath made his name as a prodigious schoolboy all-rounder who could bowl fast, hit the ball hard and was an excellent fielder. He had only four unremarkable first-class appearances under his belt when he was chosen as one of six Test debutants against Pakistan in Karachi in December 1993. Streak sent down 39 wicketless overs for 117 runs and was bowled for a first-ball duck by Waqar Younis, but the teenager showed glimpses of his wholehearted character in the second innings, grinding out an unbeaten 19 in 137 minutes in an unsuccessful attempt to save the Test. Better luck was to follow in Rawalpindi as Streak captured the first of his seven five-wicket Test hauls - still a Zimbabwe record. By the time Pakistan toured Zimbabwe in early 1995, Streak was the spearhead of the hosts' attack, taking 6-90 in the first innings of Zimbabwe's first-ever Test win. He spent that summer with English county side Hampshire, gaining valuable experience, and there was double delight for the Streak family when Denis came out of retirement aged 46 to join Heath in playing for Matabeleland as they beat Mashonaland in Zimbabwe's Logan Cup final in Bulawayo in 1996. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/8CB1/production/_129871063_streak_murphy_getty.jpgAlthough Streak's batting did not live up to its early promise at the highest level, he did record a Test century against West Indies in Harare in 2003, and played some match-winning ODI innings, hitting 13 fifties in that formatTest victories for Zimbabwe were still few and far between, with future England coach Andy Flower their only world-class batter, while Streak had to shoulder the burden of being the best bowler in a limited attack, though he passed the 100-wicket mark after back-to-back wins over India and Pakistan in 1998. Zimbabwe were often more competitive in the one-day format and, despite struggling at the 1996 World Cup, better returns came in the 1999 tournament where wins over Kenya, India and South Africa helped them reach the Super Six phase at the expense of hosts England. However, their shortcomings at Test level were laid bare at Lord's a year later as Streak's 6-87 got him on the honours board but England bowled Zimbabwe out twice in fewer than 70 overs for a crunching innings victory. By then, the players could be forgiven if their minds were back home. Zimbabwe was thrown into chaos when President Robert Mugabe's land reforms led to the invasion and seizure of white-owned farms - sometimes violently - with the Streaks' family farm among those affected. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/CD60/production/_129867525_streak_vaughan_smith_getty.jpgStreak had two spells as Zimbabwe captain, leading them at the 2003 World Cup, and later that year in a one-day international tri-series featuring South Africa and hosts EnglandStreak was named captain in place of Flower later in 2000, and found himself in charge of a team who struggled to beat anyone other than newcomers Bangladesh at Test level. He resigned as skipper in October 2001, but was persuaded to take the job again a year later, and it meant he was captain when politics dominated Zimbabwe's co-hosting of the 2003 World Cup. Flower and fast bowler Henry Olonga wore black armbands in Zimbabwe's opening game, issuing a statement that they were "mourning the death of democracy in our country" under Mugabe. Three days later, England forfeited their game with Zimbabwe rather than travel to Harare on safety grounds, after receiving death threats. Streak resigned in 2004 after a stand-off with the board, before he and more than a dozen players went on strike, and were then sacked. Though Streak briefly returned the following year, he ended his international career after the now-weakened Zimbabwe were thumped at home by India. He continued to play for Warwickshire between 2004 and 2007, before a final playing stint in the unsanctioned Indian Cricket League in 2008. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/128F1/production/_129871067_world_xi_getty.jpgFew Zimbabwe players of his era would be under consideration for a World XI - but Streak did play in such a team, captained by Shane Warne, in a January 2005 series in New Zealand to raise money for relief efforts after the Asian tsunamiAlthough his country continued to struggle to put out competitive teams on the world stage, and to pay its players and coaches, Streak did return as Zimbabwe's bowling coach in 2009, before taking a similar role with Bangladesh. He was given the Zimbabwe head coach role in 2016, but he and his entire coaching staff were sacked by email after the team failed to qualify for the 2019 World Cup. Streak also held coaching and consultancy roles with Scotland, Somerset and in the Indian Premier League, but his association with the game ended on a sour note in 2021 when he was banned from cricket for eight years by the ICC. The governing body found that he had colluded with an Indian man known as 'Mr X', passing on information about franchise T20 leagues - likely to be used for betting on games - and players' contact details, in return for two bitcoins and an iPhone for his wife. Having admitted disclosing information, he insisted he had never been involved in match-fixing. "A hard-won reputation, sold cheap," the Guardian newspaper wrote. The cancer diagnosis was announced in May 2023, with a family statement referencing his indomitable spirit. "He will continue to fight this disease in a similar vein to that which his opponents faced during his revered days on the cricket field," it read. ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1B69/production/_129871070_streak_mire_getty.jpgAs a coach, Streak was keen to work with Zimbabwe's up-and-coming pace bowlers, and also founded an academy in his homeland - which had his name removed from it after his ICC banichef.bbci.co.uk/ace/standard/240/cpsprodpb/13A3/production/_129872050_heath_streak_getty.jpg

I have been reading Dickie Bird's book 80 not out, published in 2013, so of course he is now 90 not out... His great life-long friend Michael Parkinson who recently passed, celebrated Dickie's 90th birthday. He was waxing lyrical about another close friend, fellow unpire Barrie Meyer and all the funny stories et al.. Barrie was a good cricketer playing for Gloucestershire, scoring over 5000 runs and taking over 800 catches/stumpings as keeper.. But Barrie was also a goalscorer for BRFC from 1953-58, playing 139 league games scoring 60 goals...a good athlete it seems. Sadly Barrie died 2 years after the book was written at the age of 83... One funny story was when Dickie was in the shower after a match, Barrie shouted see you later mate and took off and left.. Dickie got changed a while later, tried the door to leave, only to find he was locked in and all had gone home.. Dickie got out at 2am when he heard a security guard passing by and let him out, Dickie was rather red faced and the butt of many a joke thereafter. web.archive.org/web/20150916033426im_/http://www.bristolpost.co.uk/images/localworld/ugc-images/276268/Article/images/27795376/10944520-large.jpg

South Africa v Australia: Adam Zampa records joint-worst ODI bowling figures in tourists' defeat..

Leg-spinner Zampa went for 0-113 from his 10 overs as South Africa smashed 416-5, their second-highest ODI score against Australia. Wicket-keeper batter Heinrich Klaasen top-scored with a mammoth 174 runs off just 83 balls. In reply Australia could only reach 252, despite 99 from Alex Carey. The win for South Africa levels the five-match series at 2-2 before the final match at Johannesburg on Sunday. Zampa's figures equal compatriot Mark Lewis' record for the worst-ever ODI bowling figures in this fixture in 2006. His final over went for 26 runs, in which Klaasen hit three sixes and David Miller also struck a four, with Zampa's final two overs going for a combined 44 runs. Alastair Cook: England and Essex legend retires from professional cricket..By Stephan Shemilt, Chief cricket writer.
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/3C3B/production/_131391451_alastaircook.jpg Alastair Cook ends his career with 26,643 runs from 352 first-class matchesEngland and Essex legend Alastair Cook has announced his retirement from professional cricket, ending a record-breaking 20-year career. Left-hander Cook, 38, retired from Test cricket in 2018 but has played five more seasons with Essex since then. Cook's contract at Chelmsford has expired and England's all-time leading run-scorer is not seeking an extension. "It is not easy to say goodbye. Cricket has been so much more than my job," said Cook in a statement. "It has allowed me to experience places I never dreamed I would go, be a part of teams that have achieved things I would never have thought possible and, most importantly, created deep friendships that will last a lifetime. "From the eight-year-old boy who first played for Wickham Bishops Under-11s to now, I end with a strange feeling of sadness mixed with pride. Above all, I am incredibly happy." Essex had been waiting on a decision from Cook following the end of the County Championship season, when they finished second behind champions Surrey. Coach Anthony McGrath said he was hopeful the county would "see him for a bit longer", but Cook informed Essex he would be retiring on Thursday evening. "It is the right time for this part of my life to come to an end," added Cook. "I have always given absolutely everything I possibly could have to be the best player I could be, but now I want to make way for the new generation to take over. ichef.bbci.co.uk/live-experience/cps/624/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2023/10/13/b4d64050-e103-4f5e-8e75-b7a8cdbe83ab.jpg"I will never underestimate the privilege I have had to play cricket. I will always be grateful for what the game has given to me. Now, I hope the Bedfordshire Farmers will find space for a has-been 'all-rounder' somewhere in their lower order." Cook made his professional debut against Essex for Essex Cricket Board in the Cheltenham and Gloucester Trophy in 2003, then played in the County Championship for Essex later that summer. He made a double hundred for Essex against the touring Australians in 2005, and the next year was famously called up from an England Lions tour in the West Indies to make his England Test debut against India in Nagpur, scoring a century in the second innings. It would be the start of a 161-cap Test career, 159 of them played consecutively, a world record. Cook's 12,472 Test runs and 33 centuries are England records, while no batter for any team has made more than Cook's 11,845 runs as a Test opener. He was England Test captain between 2012 and 2017, leading in 59 matches, then a record which has since been broken by Joe Root. Cook captained England to Ashes series wins on home soil in 2013 and 2015, but was also the leader on the wrong end of a 5-0 hammering down under in 2013-14. He was captain for 69 one-day internationals between 2010 and 2014. i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article31182580.ece/ALTERNATES/s615b/0_GettyImages-1031572774.jpgCook's crowning glory was the 766 runs he scored to be player of the series during the 2010-11 Ashes win in Australia, England's only triumph in an away Ashes since 1986-87. The end of his Test career, when he was only 33, was fairytale stuff. Announcing his retirement before the fifth match of the series against India five years ago, Cook marked his final match as an England player with a century amid emotional scenes at The Oval, with his wife Alice heavily pregnant with their third child. "Although my England career came to an end in 2018, I remain blown away by the amount of affection I receive from England supporters," said Cook. "Wherever I have travelled, you have been there with your enthusiasm, kind words and unshakable belief. English cricket really does have the best fans in the world." Cook initially signed to play three more years with Essex, the county he joined as a 12-year-old. He was part of the team that won the County Championship in 2019, repelling the Somerset spinners on a tense final day of the season at Taunton. Essex were in with an outside chance of regaining the title until the final round this season, only to lose out to Surrey. The last of Cook's 352 first-class matches came away to Northants. He was out for six in each innings, both times to Ben Sanderson. Overall, Cook ends on 26,643 first-class runs - comfortably higher than anyone else currently playing the game - at an average of more than 46, with 74 hundreds. Since the end of his England career, Cook's 3,889 runs in the County Championship and Bob Willis Trophy is bettered only by Durham's Alex Lees. He also played a total of 178 List A matches and 32 T20s, making 14 white-ball hundreds. "I won't miss strapping on my pads and facing the new ball, but I will miss being in the Essex changing room," said Cook. "When I ended my international career, I had no idea that I would have five more bonus years playing for Essex. I cannot put into words just how much fun we have had during that time." Cook was knighted for services to cricket in 2019. At the time he was the first England cricketer to receive a knighthood since Ian Botham in 2007. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/10/13/14/76521945-12627811-image-a-144_1697203617103.jpgJames Anderson, England's all-time leading wicket-taker, said Cook has had an "amazing" career. Caught Cook, bowled Anderson occurred on 40 occasions in Test cricket, the most for any fielder-bowler combination for England. "I feel very fortunate that I got to play a lot with him," said Anderson. "For him to give back to Essex what he has over the past few years speaks volumes about him. "He constantly performs, churning out runs. He'll be hugely missed." Former England captain Michael Vaughan said: "I don't know if we'll see a player like him again. He's the last of a dying breed of openers. He maximised every ounce of his ability to the maximum level. "He was a great team member and a great ambassador for the game." i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/10/13/15/76522027-12627811-The_former_England_captain_had_continued_playing_in_the_county_g-a-42_1697207039303.jpg

Bishan Singh Bedi: Indian cricket legend dies aged 77..bmkltsly13vb.compat.objectstorage.ap-singapore-1.oraclecloud.com/cdn.sg.dailymirror.lk/assets/uploads/image_7568a4ee38.jpgIndian cricket legend Bishan Singh Bedi has died aged 77 after a prolonged illness. He was battling age-related illnesses and had undergone a few surgeries in recent years. Bedi, regarded as one of the world's finest ever spin bowlers, captained India in 22 of his 67 Tests and took 266 wickets. He made his debut against West Indies in 1966 and played his last Test against England at The Oval in 1979. Bedi also played English county cricket for Northamptonshire and finished his career with 1,560 first-class wickets, the highest by any Indian bowler. Bedi was an integral part of a famed quartet of India's world-beating spin bowlers in the 1960s and 70s, which included Erapalli Prasanna, Bhagwat Chandrasekhar and Srinivas Venkataraghavan. In 2021, Bedi was picked by readers for a place in BBC Sport's all-time India Test XI. Born in Amritsar in India's Punjab state, Bedi began playing cricket at school. When he turned 20, he became the 113th cricketer to represent India in Tests. Over a 12-year career his best bowling performance came in 1969 when he picked up seven wickets for 98 runs against Australia in Kolkata (then known as Calcutta), a Test match that India lost. In his trademark pink or bright blue turban, Bedi was a spin bowling purist's dream. With a languid run-up and a fluid action, bowling came naturally to him. A cricket writer described the left arm spinner as "stealthy, silent and deadly, a master of deception who conjured variations in flight, loop, spin and pace without any perceptible change in action". i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/10/23/13/76891521-12662073-image-a-37_1698065541333.jpg"Bedi flighted the ball higher than any bowler in international cricket; if he could challenge quick-footed batsmen thus, it was only because his command was so complete that he would make the ball descend far quicker than it went up," wrote Ramachandra Guha, a historian and author of A Corner of a Foreign Field, a book on Indian cricket. Former India wicketkeeper Syed Kirmani, who played 88 Tests for India, once said Bedi had so much variation that he could "bowl six different deliveries in an over". West Indies legend Sir Garry Sobers, one of the greatest all-rounders ever to play cricket, said Bedi "took the weight off the ball nicely". Mike Brearley, one of England's greatest captains, called his bowling "beautiful". And Australia great Sir Donald Bradman, widely regarded as the game's best batter of all time, felt that "Bedi was a real study for the connoisseur and amongst the finest bowlers of his type". Bedi was also a rare outspoken cricketer, often getting embroiled in controversies. In 1976, he declared India's second innings at 97-5 against Clive Lloyd's West Indies at Kingston, Jamaica, in protest against intimidatory bowling by the hosts. Three India batters were out of the game after being hit by West Indian quick bowlers, and Bedi said it was not a declaration because there were no fit players to come out and bat. West Indies won the game by 10 wickets. In 1977, he accused England left-arm fast bowler John Lever of using Vaseline to swing the ball during a tour of India. The next year, he forfeited a match against Pakistan, alleging partisan umpiring. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/10/23/13/76891539-12662073-image-a-38_1698065631697.jpgIn 1990, as the national coach, he threatened to dump the India team in the sea after they lost a match against Australia. In 2002, he launched a stunning attack on Sri Lanka's spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan, accusing him of throwing. "If Murali doesn't chuck, then show me how to bowl," Bedi said in an interview published in Wisden Cricket Asia. Back in 1978, he refused a lucrative contract from Kerry Packer to play World Series Cricket, a rebel tournament in Australia, later recounting that Packer's agent had approached him three times with substantial offers. Decades later, he upbraided player auctions in the Indian Premier League, saying that he "just did not like players being treated like horses being sold to the highest bidder". At home, Bedi never pulled his punches while criticising cricket board officials. He asked for his name to be taken off from a stand at the main cricket stadium in Delhi in protest against the statue of a dead politician belonging to the ruling BJP being installed. He once appeared on a TV programme without permission and sought higher match fees for his team. "If speaking one's mind is a crime, then I am guilty several times over," he said once. Bedi was an intensely social person and a flamboyant personality. His daughter remembered a "home full of free-flowing alcohol, food and an insurmountable amount of loud laughter". He loved dogs and brought various breeds from kennel clubs home from his stints in the UK. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2023/10/23/13/76891517-12662073-image-m-36_1698065531909.jpgThe "sardar of spin" - as he was popularly called in India - had an infectious sense of humour. In England, he once picked up two dogs from a kennel, named them Charles and Diana and took them to India. At the London airport, an official asked him, "Are you taking the mickey out of our royalty?". A deadpan Bedi replied: "No! I am taking the royalty with me." The wisecrack summed up Bedi in many ways: an irreverent personality, and a rebel of sorts. And of course, one of the greatest cricketers of all time.

Australian club cricketer takes six wickets in final over to win match..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/3085/production/_131712421_microsoftteams-image.png Surfers Paradise were 174-4 chasing 179 going into the final over before the bowling heroics of Mudgeeraba captain Gareth Morgan (centre - holding the ball)It is a cricketing miracle that could sit alongside Ian Botham 1981 or Ben Stokes 2019. But instead of Headingley, this latest incredible comeback took place in the humble surroundings of the Carrara Community Centre on Australia's Gold Coast. Club side Surfers Paradise had victory in their grasp against Mudgeeraba in the Gold Coast's Premier League Division Three. Chasing 179, they needed just five runs from the final over with six wickets in hand to win. Mudgeeraba captain Gareth Morgan had other ideas, taking six wickets in six balls to seal the unlikeliest of victories. "It is funny, the umpire said to me at the start of the over that I needed to take a hat-trick or something to win the game," Morgan told the Gold Coast Bulletin. "When it happened he just sort of looked at me." The chaos began when opener Jake Garland, a reporter for the Gold Coast Bulletin, smacked the ball straight to mid-wicket to depart for 65. The next two batters were caught at mid-on and short mid-wicket to make it three in a row - but Morgan was not done there. "I remember thinking after I got the hat-trick - I don't want to lose this game now. Then it just went crazy," said Morgan. The next batter was caught to point to leave Surfers Paradise wobbling on 174-8. Morgan then needed no further help from his team-mates in the field, with the final two batters clean bowled. "When I saw the stumps go back on the last ball I couldn't believe it, I've never seen anything like it," he said. For reporter Garland, he had broken a golden rule of journalism by becoming part of the story. Not that he minded too much on this occasion. "I mean all you can really do now is laugh about it," he wrote on X, formerly Twitter. "Always wanted to be part of history with sport somehow, didn't think it would be for this reason." Incredibly, this is not the first time Morgan has been involved in some bowling heroics. Writing on the club's Facebook page, Morgan's father Huw said: "A proud father here. Gareth won't tell you, but as a young bloke, he once took five wickets in an over! He didn't get six, because there was only five wickets left at the start of the over." The most wickets taken in an over of professional cricket is five, which has been achieved on three occasions, Neil Wagner playing for Otago in 2011, Al-Amin Hossain for a Bangladesh Cricket Board XI in 2013 and Abhimanyu Mithun for Indian state side Karnataka in 2019.

Harry Brook and Nat Sciver-Brunt claim top Cricket Writers' Club awards..

ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/E016/production/_129666375_gettyimages-1469146067.jpg Nat Sciver-Brunt has played 210 times for England across all formatsEngland's Harry Brook has been awarded the Bob Willis Trophy at the 2023 Cricket Writers' Club awards. Brook, 24, scooped the award for the overall cricketer of the year, just two years after winning the CWC's Young Cricketer of the Year. All-rounder Nat Sciver-Brunt picked up the Women's Cricket Award for a second consecutive year. BBC broadcaster Kevin Howells was recognised with the Peter Smith Award. The Bob Willis Trophy, given to England's men's or women's player of the year, was awarded to Brook off the back of 12 months that saw him play a key role for England across three formats. In November 2022, Brook helped England win the T20 World Cup, as well as scoring four centuries in his first 12 Test matches, becoming the fastest player to reach 1,000 Test runs in terms of balls faced. In The Hundred, Brook also scored a 41-ball century for the Northern Superchargers which helped him force his way into England's World Cup squad. "I think the T20 World Cup just tops it to be honest," said Brook. "To have won a World Cup, to have played in an Ashes series and to have experienced some of the things I have this year is a dream come true. "It has been the most enjoyable time of my life so far. The way we've gone out there and tried to play our cricket has been really fun." Sciver-Brunt picked up the Women's Cricket Award for the second year running after her contributions for England in the Women's Ashes led to them drawing the series 8-8 with Australia, despite going 6-0 down. Earlier in the year, Sciver-Brunt had also been England's top run-scorer in their run to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup in South Africa. "It seems like it's not real to me still," said Sciver-Brunt. "Just having a quick think about it and really the enormity of the year that's happened. Hopefully it's the first of many 'firsts' in terms of women's cricket's journey." The 31-year-old also spoke about her ambitions to captain England one day, saying she would "love" the chance to do so. "Heather [Knight] has got a few years left in her I'm sure," said Sciver-Brunt. "She's done such a great job. But I would like to lead England and we'll see how it goes. Whether it's one format at a time, I'm not really sure, but it'll be really, really great to lead England." Somerset's teenage wicketkeeper-batter James Rew was named the Young Cricketer of the Year after a breakthrough season. Rew scored more than 1,000 runs for Somerset in the County Championship and finished third in the leading Division One run-scorers' table, averaging 57.15. Former England opening batter Alex Lees was named the County Championship Player of the Year, after scoring 1,347 runs and finishing as the leading run-scorer in Division Two to help Durham win the league title. Fast bowler Lauren Filer was named Emerging Cricketer of the Year. Filer made her Test debut in the Ashes Test against Australia and also won her first three one-day international caps against Sri Lanka in September. BBC broadcaster Howells was given the Peter Smith award in recognition of his contribution to broadcasting, particularly in the County Championship. "Kevin Howells is one of the best broadcasters in the country," said Tanya Aldred, who chaired a panel which selected the winner. "He works diligently and skilfully, conducting himself with good humour and perspective while watching over a BBC broadcasting team spread across the country. His love and knowledge of the county game helps keep it alive." Sussex D40 batter Alfie Pyle is Disability Cricketer of the Year and Nicholas Brookes' 'An Island's Eleven' won the Derek Hodgson Book Award.

Ben Stokes: England Test captain has knee surgery and aims to be fit for India series..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/1244C/production/_131882847_gettyimages-1766914402.jpg All-rounder Stokes was only able to play as a batter at the World Cup because of ongoing knee problemsEngland Test captain Ben Stokes has undergone surgery to address problems with his left knee. The 32-year-old all-rounder was unable to bowl in the summer's final three Ashes Tests and only featured as a batter at the World Cup in India. He announced earlier this month he would have surgery following the tournament. Stokes is aiming to regain fitness in time for England's five-match Test series in India in January. He posted a picture on Instagram of himself on crutches outside London's Cromwell Hospital, with a caption that read: "In and out. Under the [knife emoji] done. Rehab starts now." Last week, the all-rounder made himself unavailable for the 2024 Indian Premier League to manage his workload and fitness. Stokes was Chennai Super Kings' most expensive signing for the 2023 IPL but played just twice due to injury.

Nathan Lyon: Lancashire sign Australia Test off-spinner for 2024 County Championship..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/16420/production/_131886119_gettyimages-1821634200.jpg Nathan Lyon made his comeback in the Sheffield Shield for New South Wales in October after four months out with a calf injuryLancashire have signed Australia Test off-spinner Nathan Lyon for 2024. The 35-year-old made his return to first-class cricket last month after tearing his calf against England in the second Ashes Test in June. Lyon, who will be available for all formats, took six wickets in four games during a brief spell in county cricket with Worcestershire in 2017. Lancashire are still without a head coach after Glen Chapple's exit at the end of last season. "This is an exciting opportunity for me, and I am really looking forward to heading over to England for a full season of county cricket with Lancashire," Lyon told the club website. "I love playing cricket in England. I'm keen to keep learning, keep improving my game and hopefully I can contribute to winning matches for the Red Rose and pass on some of the experiences that I have gained over the years." Lyon also signed to play for Hampshire in 2020 but the move was curtailed amid the Covid-19 pandemic. Prior to suffering he calf injury which ruled him out for the final three Ashes Tests in the summer, Lyon had appeared in 100 consecutive Tests, making him just the seventh player in men's international cricket to achieve that feat. Only Australian greats Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath have taken more than Lyon's 496 Test wickets for the Baggy Greens. Lyon could feature alongside England bowling legend James Anderson next season. The pair are eighth and third in the all-time list of Test wicket-takers, with 41-year-old Anderson having taken 690.

Tom Abell: All-rounder steps down as Somerset captain after seven seasons in role..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/901E/production/_131849863_gettyimages-1151636329.jpg Tom Abell lifted the 2019 One-Day Cup as Somerset captainAll-rounder Tom Abell has stepped down as Somerset captain after seven seasons leading the Taunton side. The 29-year-old was appointed captain ahead of the 2017 campaign leading Somerset to runners up spot in the County Championship in 2018 and 2019. Abell lifted the One-Day Cup in 2019 beating Hampshire in the final. "I didn't have a great season in 2023. It can be tough to lead when you're not content with your own performance," Abell told the club's website. "This will give me the opportunity to get back to where I need to be, which is contributing to Somerset winning games of cricket." Abell has a first-class average of 33.97 with the bat and 31.62 with the ball. In 2023, he averaged 31.10 in the County Championship with one century and two fifties but claimed only four wickets in 13 matches. He made his debut in 2014, scoring 95 and 0 on debut against Warwickshire in the Championship. 'I'm stepping down with a heavy heart'"As a Somerset boy it's been a massive privilege to captain the club and the experience has been incredible," Abell continued. "I'm stepping down with a heavy heart. It's not been an easy decision, but I've thought about it a lot and I believe that it is in the best interests of the team and the club. "Sometimes change can be a good thing and I think that now is the right time. My decision is entirely based on what I feel is best for us moving forward." Somerset's director of cricket, Andy Hurry, said Abell still had a "huge role to play in the future of the club". Hurry also said the club are beginning the process of identifying who should replace Abell as captain. "Tom feels the time is right for someone else to take on the mantle," Hurry said. "Tom has captained Somerset County Cricket Club with distinction over the last seven seasons. "Everyone connected with Somerset will agree that he has been an absolute credit to the club both on and off the field. "His conduct, commitment, leadership and dedication have been exemplary during his time in the role, and he has written himself into the history of the club forever."

England keep places open for Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer in T20 World Cup squad..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/AAF0/production/_132106734_gettyimages-1840663360.jpg Archer has struggled with a recurring elbow injury since 2020 and has also experienced back problemsBen Stokes and Jofra Archer will have places kept open for them in the England team for the 2024 T20 World Cup, says coach Matthew Mott. All-rounder Stokes is recovering from a knee operation and hopes to be fit to captain England in the Test series in India from January. Fast bowler Archer has not featured for England since March because of an elbow injury. Mott said Stokes was a "rare" talent and lauded Archer's "box-office pace". "Every team in the world wants someone like that [Stokes] and they're rare," said Mott. He pointed to Stokes' "incredible match-winning ability in every department" and said the "ability to have a seam bowler in that top six gives you so many options with your team balance". Mott added: "A lot of the times you have to give up something. If you win, everyone says 'oh, they got it right'. If you lose, it's 'they were a bowler short or a spinner short'. "When you've got a seam bowler in your top six, it makes selection a hell of a lot easier. So [choosing him at the T20 World Cup] is a given." The 2024 T20 World Cup in the West Indies and United States takes place in June. Archer has been hampered by a series of injuries which have kept him out of Test cricket since 2021 and allowed him to play just seven white-ball games in 2023. He has not been selected in the Test squad to tour India.

David Warner pleads for return of Australian 'baggy green' cap after revealing it was stolen..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/4F86/production/_132185302_gettyimages-1891568389.jpg Retiring Warner is fifth on Australia's list of Test run scorers with 8,695 in 111 TestsAustralia opener David Warner has pleaded for his "baggy green" cap to be returned after revealing it has been stolen from his luggage. Warner said the cap was in his backpack which was taken while he travelled to Sydney to play against Pakistan. Wednesday's third Test will be Warner's last before he retires from the format. "It's sentimental to me, it's something I would love to have back in my hands walking out there come this week," Warner said in a video on social media. Warner retires from ODI cricket David Warner: Why Australia's man of many personas bows out an ODI great The baggy green is given to an Australia player when they make their Test debut and has become an iconic symbol of the team. Australia legend Shane Warne sold his cap for one million Australian dollars (£528,514) to raise money for the bushfire appeal. "This is my last resort," added 37-year-old Warner. "A couple of days ago our bags got freighted via Qantas. We've gone through CCTV footage and they've got some blind spots apparently. We [also] spoke to the Quay West Hotel, who we absolutely trust, and have gone through their cameras, no one's come into our rooms. "Unfortunately someone has taken my backpack out of my actual luggage, which had my girls' presents in there and inside this backpack was my baggy green. "If it is the backpack you really wanted, I have a spare one here, you won't get into trouble. "Please reach out to Cricket Australia or myself via my social media and I'm happy to give this to you if you return my baggy green." In the summer Warner laid out his plans to retire after this week's Test in his home city. It will be his 112th Test with Australia already holding an unassailable 2-0 series lead. Warner also revealed this week he will retire from 50-over internationals but continue to play for Australia in T20s up to the World Cup in June.

Warner, 37, said on Tuesday the cap had been stolen from his luggage as he travelled to Sydney for the match. Three days remain in the third Test against Pakistan, after which Warner will retire from the format. "Any cricketer knows how special their cap is and I will treasure this for the rest of my life," Warner said. "It is a load off my shoulders going into the last couple of days." The 'baggy green' is given to an Australia player when they make their Test debut and has become an iconic symbol of the team. Warner pleaded for its return on social media, saying: "If it is the backpack you really wanted, I have a spare one here, you won't get into trouble." In another video after its return, Warner added: "I am pleased and relieved to have my baggy back in my hands. "I am very grateful to all of those involved in locating it - the Qantas team, the freight company, the hotel and our own team management. David Warner: Australia thrash Pakistan by eight wickets in opening batter's final Test..By Ffion Wynne, BBC Sport.ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/13237/production/_132219387_gettyimages-1911140490.jpgAustralia beat Pakistan by eight wickets in David Warner's final Test match to seal a 3-0 series clean sweep. Opening batter Warner struck 57 as the hosts comfortably chased 130 to win on the fourth day in Sydney. An emotional Warner was given a guard of honour by Pakistan and added 119 for the second wicket with Marnus Labuschagne, who made an unbeaten 62. "I'd like to be remembered as exciting, and entertaining," said 37-year-old Warner. "I hope I put a smile on everyone's face with the way I played and hopefully the young kids out there can follow in my footsteps. "This team, they're energetic, they're world class and they're a great bunch of guys." Warner ends his career as Australia's most prolific opener, and the fourth-most successful opener of all-time in terms of runs scored, behind England's Sir Alastair Cook, India's Sunil Gavaskar and South Africa's Graeme Smith. Warner played 161 one-day internationals and also announced his retirement from that format during this series, but will continue to play T20s. "It's going to be hard to replace him," said Cummins. "He's basically played every game for the last dozen years. "He's a huge personality, he really sets the game up with the way he plays every time he walks out. "He's going to be huge to replace. We'll enjoy him for the next day or so while we've still got him around."

Sandeep Lamichhane: Nepal spinner handed eight-year jail sentence after being found guilty of rape..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/15104/production/_132267268_body.jpg Sandeep Lamichhane (centre) was arrested in October 2022Nepal spinner Sandeep Lamichhane has been sentenced to eight years in prison for raping an 18-year-old woman. Lamichhane, who is not in custody, was not present when the sentence was handed down at a court in the Nepalese capital Kathmandu on Wednesday. The 23-year-old - Nepal's most high-profile cricketer - was found guilty of the offence last month. Lamichhane's lawyer Saroj Ghimire told Reuters he intends to appeal against the verdict in a "higher court". "We are not convinced about the decision of the court," said Ghimire. "The court has whimsically declared Sandeep to be a convict. Sandeep will go to the higher court for justice." Lamichhane - who has played in Australia's Big Bash and the Indian Premier League - was suspended as Nepal captain in September 2022 due to the rape accusation. After a warrant was issued for his arrest, he was taken into custody after flying home to Kathmandu from playing in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL). At the time, he said on Facebook he was returning to co-operate with the investigation and denied any wrongdoing. Following his release on bail, Lamichhane returned to the Nepal side amid protests in February 2023 for a Cricket World Cup League 2 tri-series against Scotland and Namibia. Players from both opposition nations refused to shake his hand, but Lamichhane continued to play for Nepal throughout 2023.

David Warner arrives at SCG via helicopter for Big Bash match..
ichef.bbci.co.uk/onesport/cps/800/cpsprodpb/109F8/production/_132288086_gettyimages-1926581080.jpg David Warner will make three appearances for Sydney Thunder this season
David Warner flew by helicopter and landed in the middle of the Sydney Cricket Ground as he dashed from his brother's wedding to play in the Big Bash for the Sydney Thunder. The 37-year-old, who retired from Test cricket at the same ground last week, flew 45 minutes from the Hunter Valley to face city rivals the Sixers. Warner scored 37 with two sixes but the Thunder fell to a 19-run defeat. "I've done my utmost best to get down here," Warner said. Speaking before the game, he told Australia's Channel 7: "I might look like a bit of a goose if I don't get any runs but it's my contribution to not just the BBL but Australian cricket." The Sixers were put into bat first in front of the sell-out crowd and Steve Smith, who has replaced Warner as Australia's opening batter, was bowled for a golden duck. They eventually posted 151 runs, with the Thunder then bowled out for 132.

Nat Sciver-Brunt named ICC women's cricket of the year for second successive year..

The 31-year-old was England's player of the series in the drawn 2023 Ashes contest and their leading run-scorer at the T20 World Cup last February. She scored three centuries in five one-day international knocks in 2023, including two against Australia. "It feels pretty special. I wasn't expecting it," Sciver-Brunt said. "I am really pleased and proud. "It is one of the top awards you can win, to come up and compete against your teams but also the rest of the international teams as well." Sciver-Brunt, who beat Sri Lanka's Chamari Athapaththu, and Australia pair Ash Gardner and Beth Mooney to the award, also scored well in her two Tests in 2023 - 78 against Australia and 59 in the defeat by India in December. Despite Sciver-Brunt's success England were unable to regain the Ashes as the multi-format series was drawn 8-8 while they also exited the T20 World Cup in the semi-finals. Sciver-Brunt was named in the ICC's ODI and T20 teams of the year with team-mate Sophie Ecclestone also in the T20 side.

Imran Khan sentenced to 10 years in prison for leaking state secrets..By Kieren Williams, News Reporter.i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article31998517.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200d/0_FILES-PAKISTAN-POLITICS.jpgThe former Prime Minister of Pakistan and cricketer-turned-politician, Imran Khan was ousted from power back in 2022 in a no-confidence vote and is already serving a three-year prison sentence Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan has been sentenced to ten years in prison for leaking state secrets. Along with one of his party deputies, Shah Mahmood Qureshi, Khan was previously found guilty of revealing official secrets. According to Zulfiqar Bukhari, spokesman for Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, the court announced the verdict during a hearing at the Adiala jail in Rawalpindi. Khan, 71, was previously ousted through a no-confidence vote in parliament in April 2022 and is already serving a three-year prison sentence in a corruption case. He has been in jail since August of last year and claims that the charges are politically motivated. The sentencing of the cricketer-turned-politician is a part of what is popularly known as the Cipher case and in relation to a diplomatic cable that Khan claims proved his allegations that a conspiracy existed to remove him from power in 2022. The latest development comes just a week ahead of the February 8 parliamentary elections in the country. Khan's team is likely to appeal against today's ruling and whilst he won't be on the ballot in next month's elections, he remains a potent political force in Pakistan. This is because of a significant grassroots following combined with an anti-establishment rhetoric. Recently, Khan's supporters held nationwide rallies across Pakistan, some of which descended into violence, leading to clashes with police. They raised slogans against the caretaker government who they warn has been trying to keep the PTI party out of the upcoming elections. i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article31998473.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200e/1_PAKISTAN-POLITICS-KHAN.jpgThe government has cracked down on the party, including reportedly barring them from holding public gatherings, forcibly changing their symbol, and having key candidates disqualified or jailed, according to the Independent. Pakistan’s independent human rights commission has said there is little chance of a free and fair parliamentary election next month because of "pre-poll rigging." It also expressed concern about authorities rejecting the candidacies of Khan and senior figures from his party. The Cipher case is just one of over 150 cases against Khan and other charges range from contempt of court to terrorism and inciting violence. Khan is alleged to have waved the confidential document during a rally after he was removed as premier. He claimed it was proof he was being threatened and ousted by a US conspiracy, executed by the country's military and government. Both Washington and Pakistani officials have denied the claim. The document in question, the Cipher, has never been made public but was apparently a diplomatic correspondence between the Pakistani ambassador to Washington and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Islamabad.

Peter Roebuck inquest: Cricketer took his own life amid sexual assault probe..By Emma Elgee and PA Media, BBC News.
i2-prod.walesonline.co.uk/news/world-news/article28605154.ece/ALTERNATES/s810/0_roe.jpg Former Somerset cricket captain Peter RoebuckA former cricketer, who was arrested on suspicion of sexual assault, was "totally in despair" before he jumped from his hotel room window in South Africa, an inquest has heard. Former Somerset captain Peter Roebuck 55, was in Cape Town to commentate on a match between Australia and South Africa in November 2011 when he fell from the sixth floor of the Southern Sun hotel. Mr Roebuck had allegedly assaulted a 26-year-old man in his hotel room, Cheshire Coroner's Court heard. The inquest concluded Mr Roebuck had taken his own life 13 years ago. The batsman, from Wirral, played for Somerset from 1974 to 1991 and captained the county side, was a former summariser with BBC Radio's Test Match Special. The Sydney Morning Herald columnist was staying at the Southern Sun hotel to commentate on a match between Australia and South Africa. The inquest, held on Friday, heard Mr Roebuck had allegedly sexually assaulted a 26-year-old man in his room on 7th November, when they arranged to meet to discuss whether he could financially support the student through university. A complaint was made to the police on 12th November, and officers went to Mr Roebuck's hotel to arrest him that evening. In a statement, commentator Jim Maxwell, a friend of Mr Roebuck's who worked for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, said he received a call late that evening asking him to go to his room. Mr Maxwell, who was staying on the same floor of the hotel, said he went into the room after being greeted by a police officer and saw his friend sitting on the bed. "He was totally in despair," he said. He said Mr Roebuck asked him to contact people at his home and told him he needed a lawyer, before police then asked him to leave. i2-prod.liverpoolecho.co.uk/incoming/article3250194.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200e/peter-roebuck-300-985758902.jpg'In control of himself'In a statement, arresting officer Det Aubrey McDonald said: "Peter Roebuck mentioned he was well known in the cricket fraternity and that his arrest will be front-page news worldwide." Mr McDonald said he stepped outside the hotel room to make a phone call and heard his colleague Lt Cecil Jacobs shouting at Mr Roebuck. An incident then took place which resulted in Mr Roebuck's death, the inquest heard. Mr McDonald said: "At the time of the incident the deceased appeared very calm and in control of himself." The court heard post-mortem examinations carried out in South Africa and the UK both found the cause of Mr Roebuck's death was multiple injuries. The same cause of death was recorded at an inquest held in South Africa, which was not attended by family members. Dr Matthew Lyall, the forensic pathologist who carried out the post-mortem examination in the UK, said in his report: "There were no findings to specifically suggest that a third party was directly involved in any of the injuries, but the involvement of a third party cannot be ruled out solely on the basis of the pathological findings." Concluding the inquest, senior coroner for Cheshire, Jacqueline Devonish, thanked family members who had attended court. She said: "I'm sorry the case has taken such a long time for us to progress, but it was in part waiting to find out about a renewed hearing in South Africa which hasn't come to pass."
