Luke Shaw says Kobbie Mainoo 'can achieve anything'..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/94b9/live/259e7e40-3d40-11ef-b4a6-3b1b50d91225.jpgLuke Shaw has described Manchester United team-mate Kobbie Mainoo's progression over the past year as "scary". Shaw and Mainoo are on England duty together at Euro 2024, with the midfielder having started the final group match and both knockout ties. Defender Shaw made his first appearance of the tournament as a substitute in the quarter-final win over Switzerland. "When I first saw Kobbie he was in and out of first-team training, but you could see the qualities he had," said the left-back. "He was unfortunate and got an injury [in pre-season], which maybe set him back a bit - but it didn't stop him. "He has got the world at his feet. He just needs to stay level-headed, keep working hard and the world is his oyster. "He can honestly achieve anything."

United have an agreement in principle to sign 18-year-old French defender Leny Yoro from Lille. However, Real Madrid also remain interested in a deal for Yoro. United are also set to approach Fenerbahce over 24-year-old Turkey full-back - and Arsenal target - Ferdi Kadioglu. Meanwhile, 27-year-old England forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin has turned down a new contract offer from Everton amid interest from Old Trafford. Serie A side Juventus remain interested in signing Manchester United's Jadon Sancho. And the winger is only interested in joining Juventus next. Defender Victor Lindelof could leave Old Trafford this summer because of a lack of games over the past two seasons. Finally, some Marseille fans have demanded the Ligue 1 club end their interest in United forward Mason Greenwood.

Marseille's £27m Mason Greenwood bid accepted..by Simon Stone, Chief football news reporter.ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/a83c/live/78a7af10-3e91-11ef-8c8d-350a849a856f.jpgMultiple sources have confirmed to BBC Sport that Marseille have had an offer accepted for Manchester United's Mason Greenwood that could reach about £27m. It is thought personal terms have still to be agreed with the forward to complete the transfer. BBC Sport has been told Greenwood did not take part in the first day of United's pre-season training on Monday, and there is no imminent likelihood of that situation changing. It is understood the 22-year-old was briefly at their training complex to meet the club's football leadership team - which includes new sporting director Dan Ashworth and technical director Jason Wilcox - with talks centred on finding him a new club.

Here are some of your replies:Nick: Too expensive. We must avoid the pitfalls of overpaying for players in the past. Other clubs see Manchester United as a soft touch based on past behaviour. This must change - otherwise we will soon be a busted flush again. Steve: Why are we pursuing a relative unknown entity at such a high price? One good season helping to keep Everton in the Premier League does not mean you break the bank for them. There are other (better) options. Move on! Barry: He is a good player, but £45m is as much as he is worth. If Everton do not want that then move on. There are plenty of fish in the sea. Alex: United need to do what they have seemingly been reluctant to do in the past - walk away. Branthwaite is a promising player but for too long our haphazard transfer 'strategy' has been taken advantage of. There are plenty of other targets available. Carl: Braithwaite is not the type of player we should be looking at as he is not proven just yet. Andy: The changes upstairs at United have had a lot of coverage, with promises of things now being different at the club. It is time to change the narrative and stop overpaying for players just because there is money. If the player cannot force an exit for the second bid, then there are plenty of other young talents available.

No England player made more tackles (two) or interceptions (two) than the Manchester United midfielder against Netherlands. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/10ed/live/c554e980-3f73-11ef-aab4-abea2b917c4b.jpgKobbie Mainoo says he is "buzzing" to have gone from making his senior debut at Manchester United to becoming a European Championship finalist within the space of 18 months. The 19-year-old midfielder had just three senior international caps under his belt when he was selected to be in Gareth Southgate's final 26-man squad for Euro 2024, but he has already made five appearances in six games in the competition. After England's semi-final win over the Netherlands, Mainoo spoke about his personal journey over the past season: "It is an indescribable feeling," he said. "It has happened quickly but I've just been taking it day by day, game by game. "We are in the European Championship final. We are buzzing. It has been such a journey to get here. "I feel like the only way is up - it's time to put ourselves into history." On setting up a Euro 2024 final against Spain, Mainoo told BBC Radio 5 Live: "Everyone has seen that they are a good side and they have taken down some big teams. "But I feel we will be ready for that. I feel like we have built up so much now, building on performances, and now the only way is up. "We are going to be ready for that. We are going to give it everything." ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/f912/live/93e65530-3f89-11ef-9e1c-3b4a473456a6.png

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/2d20/live/3fcbafe0-3fa2-11ef-9e1c-3b4a473456a6.pngLegendary Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy will be returning to Old Trafford after joining boss Erik ten Hag's coaching team as assistant manager. It will be a welcome sight to many fans with the 48-year-old fondly remembered for his prolific goalscoring time with the Red Devils. He joined United in summer 2001 for £19m and spent five years with the club, scoring 150 goals in just 219 appearances and securing three major trophies. His first season saw him net an impressive 36 goals, but in his second campaign he incredibly eclipsed that figure - scoring 44 times to help the team to the 2002-03 Premier League title. His third season brought another 30 goals. Despite injury struggles and falling out of favour with manager Sir Alex Ferguson in the following two campaigns, it did not stop him adding double figures to his tally. With 30 assists also to his name, it meant the Dutchman contributed 0.95 goal involvements per 90 minutes. Van Nistelrooy ultimately left in controversial circumstances after falling out with Ferguson and went on to join Real Madrid in the summer of 2006.

Benfica have turned down offers from Manchester United and Paris St-Germain for 19-year-old Portugal midfielder Joao Neves. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace are determined not to sell 26-year-old England winger Eberechi Eze to United or Tottenham.

Here are some of your thoughts:Adam: Ruud van Nistelrooy was my first favourite player. He was just always on the scoresheet. Now I look back and I see maybe the most ruthless out-and-out striker in Premier League history. If he can teach our current players anything about finishing, he will be a fantastic appointment. Christine: This is fantastic news! Van Nistelrooy is a great goalscoring genius who will inspire the United players. Sheraz: That goal against Fulham. He wasn't known for his pace, or for taking players on, but the way he used his upper body strength to bully past that backline and then finish it was class! I am really happy he is back and I hope he can help Hojlund, who has the same kind of upper body strength but maybe lacks a little composure in front of goal. Peter: I'm happy Ruud is back! He is someone who knows how to score and surely that will be a positive for the young, raw strikers we have. Hopefully he can turn them in to goalscoring machines like he was. Bebsi: Ruud Ruud Ruud Ruud! What a player! Best of luck to him. He will definitely teach the youngsters a thing or two. Cagapetos: I'm happy Ruud is back. If he is half as good a coach as he was a striker, he will do great. There were concerns last season about whether Ten Hag's high-intensity training sessions had contributed to the high number of injuries, so I hope the current coaching staff will pay attention to exercise science protocols regarding periodised training and avoid overtraining. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/07/15/19/87368617-13637025-image-a-67_1721068635058.jpg

Zirkzee completed his transfer from Bologna on a five-year contract on Sunday. I'm ready for this next challenge - to go to another level in my career and win more trophies." United's new sporting director Dan Ashworth said adding a forward to the squad was a "key aim for this summer". "We are delighted that we've managed to sign a player of Joshua's calibre this early in the transfer window. "His ability and desire to grow into a world-class player means that he will be a great addition."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/2f7f/live/95709000-0915-11ef-bee9-6125e244a4cd.jpgWe asked for your views on Manchester United signing 23-year-old striker Joshua Zirkzee on a five-year contract.
How do you think he will fit in?
Here are some of your thoughts:Maximillian: Zirkzee is a young striker who has a different profile to Rasmus Hojlund and will give the coach different options and approaches to games. He is also versatile, which is a bonus. It is a good signing which confirms Ineos' intent of building for the future. Haddock: Another unproven goalscorer. Why can't United invest in a proven goalscorer? It's not a difficult decision when you have wasted money on Martial, Antony, Sancho and possibly Hojlund. Why not buy Harry Kane? This guy scored 12 goals last season. How come when Manchester City and Liverpool buy players they get value for their investments and we get zero return? Edward: It is hard to say what Zirkzee will bring to United, as yet. If he can hold the ball with his back to the goal - something that Hojlund can't do - he will be a great improvement. He has the physical stature to put up with robust defenders and, if he has the ball skills that Hojlund lacks, he will be fine. Matthew: I'm pleased that United have secured him. Usually we leave it to the last minute! AC Milan were also interested so credit to Ineos, who look a lot more confident in pursuing what the club needs. My only fear is that United only play with one striker, so Hojlund and Zirkzee may not be happy sitting on the bench more than usual. Steve: It's interesting that for the Netherlands he only came on twice and Wout Weghorst was the preferred option for Ronald Koeman when bringing on a substitute. He is not the proven article but hopefully he won't turn out to be another Manchester United buy that fails to materialise. Al: Zirkzee is an OK signing. He is not a striker who is going to come in and score 30 goals per season, but he might take some of the pressure away from Hojlund. I would like to see us sign an experienced centre-forward, like Ivan Toney or Ollie Watkins, but it is a step forward after Martial's injury problems last season limited him to 13 Premier League appearances and one goal. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/0925/live/937bc590-4294-11ef-8210-07bbdc64fafb.jpg

Kambwala spent almost four years at Old Trafford but the 19-year-old was limited in his first-team opportunities despite putting in a Player of the Match display in April's 2-2 draw with Liverpool. "Big Willy Kambwala is off to Villarreal," Drinkwater told the Devils' Advocate podcast. "He did well when he stepped in - 10 appearances, eight in the Premier League. "It was Bournemouth away where he dropped an absolute stinker. It was just inexperience maybe. "We have a buyback clause - I know that about the deal which is promising. "But, I think maybe we've seen enough from Willy Kambwala where it's another one of those players that United's academy has produced that is a fantastic footballer but isn't going to be at the top, top level. "I hope he absolute smashes it, has a good career but loses every time he comes up against Manchester United."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/7d72/live/60aef700-433d-11ef-b74c-bb483a802c97.jpgWe asked for your thoughts after Manchester United opened their pre-season campaign with a 1-0 defeat by Rosenborg in Norway.
Here are some of your responses:Kev: Same old (Scarily). Casemiro had no control flying in and getting by passed, Mount anonymous, Rashford failing to spark, Wan-Bissaka unable to be an attacking full-back. As for the kids, they are as lazy as the first team and also cannot pass - a lot like the first team. Only bright spot was the goalkeeper. Not looking much different one game in. Iain: Nothing can really be taken away from the first pre-season game - not style of play nor quality. It's predominantly about match sharpness for the first teamers and getting yourself into the loan shop window for the youth. Having said that, Vitek, Collyer and Fish stood out with decent performances. Looking forward to Rangers! John: With the amount of first squad players who started in the first half you would expect more from United. In essence the result doesn't matter but it's not a good start losing the first game of pre-season. Ten Hag will have to get a fixed team ready for the start of the season which isn't far away. Mainoo will need a rest and he is the player that makes United tick. Stan: A game of two halves with the second 11 showing their pre-season nerves against Norwegian players who are already in their season stride. The only comment is the youth players wanting to make a statement should up their game from the off. Steve: Twenty outfield players managed just two shots on target and no goals. Ten Hag is back in business. Adam: Unfortunately, today’s game showed why Southgate left Rashford out of the England squad, and why many are hoping Casemiro will move on. Subpar, not sharp enough, lacking enthusiasm. This was a very poor showing all-round. Laney: First pre-season game, a third of the team made up of first teamers, all off at half-time, playing a team of experienced players half way through their season. Predictable result. Nothing to moan about, how can there be? Paul: It's the same old same old! A lot of optimism and positivity going into the pre-season; good rebuilding from the top, but United desperately need good quality strikers, and defenders. This is again a poor show from Rashford, Mount, and Casemiro. This does not bode well for Ten Hag. I cannot see him or players lasting another poor season.

With Andre Onana remaining in Manchester and Altay Bayindir and Tom Heaton ruled out by their respective Euro 2024 commitments, 20-year-old Vitek was the senior keeper in Erik ten Hag's squad. The Czech produced five superb saves but Noah Holm wrecked their hopes of a draw when he lashed home in the fourth minute of stoppage time. United staff have spent the past few days emphasising how Kobbie Mainoo came to prominence in pre-season last year. It is debatable whether Vitek will make the same rapid progress but in front of new goalkeeping coach Jelle ten Rouwelaar, he caught the eye. With Marcus Rashford, Casemiro, Mason Mount, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Jonny Evans part of an outfield starting line-up that was completely changed at half-time, United found it difficult at times to repel a Rosenborg side that is halfway through its domestic season. Rashford did provide a moment to remember when he nutmegged Leo Cornig, which would have been appreciated by another new United coach, former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy. And Darren Fletcher, who has also joined the coaching ranks following Jason Wilcox's arrival as technical director, would have been proud that his 17-year-old son Jack was given his opportunity in the second half.

The 18-year-old centre-back has signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford, with the option for an additional 12 months. Yoro, who made his Lille debut at the age of 16, had been linked with Real Madrid and Paris St-Germain, while Liverpool were also interested in him. He played 32 times in the league last season and scored two goals as he helped Lille finish fourth and was named in the Ligue 1 team of the season.
