Eriksen scores winner in same stadium as Euro 2020 collapse - Denmark 2-1 Swedenichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/6/6/ed9d5226-bdce-4a1c-8c7d-3b4ade2a0f07.jpgChristian Eriksen scored a stunning late winner to give Denmark a 2-1 victory in their Euro 2024 warm-up against Sweden - in the same stadium Eriksen where collapsed during the last tournament. The Manchester United midfielder found Tottenham's Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg for an early opener at a sold-out Parken Stadium in Copenhagen, which was soon cancelled out by Newcastle's Alexander Isak. Eriksen, who suffered a cardiac arrest during Denmark's Euro 2020 opener against Finland, pulled the strings in midfield and made it a memorable evening as the 32-year-old claimed victory with a curling, dipping strike in the 86th minute.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/2f7f/live/95709000-0915-11ef-bee9-6125e244a4cd.jpgWe asked what you think should be the first priority at Manchester United this summer.
Here are some of your suggestions:
John: The issue of whether Erik ten Hag remains as manager or is let go is of paramount importance. Everything else radiates from that decision. Andy: Where to start? Clearout first! Too many players are not good enough or injury-prone, simple as that. Take a loss then get rid! Kevin: Clear and honest stabilisation of the whole club structure and let's get back to the days when there were no leaks of gossip/news until everything was as signed and sealed. Batbaatr: United simply sort out the Dan Ashworth issue first, no matter the cost. James: Defence has to be a priority. Losing Varane and relying on Shaw and Martinez not to be injured is a concern. Bob: Sort out the ground and training facilities.

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/2f7f/live/95709000-0915-11ef-bee9-6125e244a4cd.jpgWe want to know how you feel about Manchester United's decision to stick with Erik ten Hag.
Here are some of your responses...Tennis Jon: 100% correct decision. Two trophies in two seasons is undeniable. With some new players in, less injuries and deadwood out, I can't wait for Season 3. Paul: Apparently a Coventry City toenail & one half-decent performance in an FA Cup final was enough to erase memories of a truly appalling season of ineptitude and Erik ten Hag delusion at Old Trafford. Seriously questioning the reported genius of Dave Brailsford & Ineos after this decision. Martin, Cardiff: On Erik ten Hag - of course they should keep him at Manchester United. Worse season ever for injuries, especially in the back line. Two seasons with trophies and who else is there anyway? The names that were mooted are serial losers that have been at big clubs and won very little if anything. You cannot keep changing regime and expect to have a stable footing to build on. Clive, Marlowe: Man Utd haven’t listened to the clamour of “experts” calling for Erik ten Hag to go. One game of brilliant tactical and strategic nous has demonstrated what our future could be like under ETH. Fergie had his FA Cup career-saving season, so has ETH. The crucial work starts now, in the close season with arrivals and departures. Give ETH the opportunity to mould the footballing side in his image. Bravo Ratcliffe et all for giving ETH the means to bring success back to Old Trafford. “Glory, glory Man Utd!” Ken, Northern Ireland: Delighted Ineos have finally concluded their review and have come to the correct decision. Erik ten Hag deserves more time. Has he been perfect? No. Has he made mistakes? Yes. But the outside noise and mitigating circumstances that Ten Hag has had to put up with have been crazy - Greenwood, Ronaldo, Sancho, defensive injuries and the protracted takeover. Given all of this, he hasn’t lost the dressing room and has reached three out of four cup finals in two years, winning two of them. Ten Hag has proven he has the ability to win trophies, in Ten Hag we trust!! Andrew, Belfast: Ten Hag staying is an indication that: 1. No viable alternatives were interested in the role; 2. Ineos didn’t want to pay compensation to ETH; 3. Utd want to break the cycle of hire and fire. However, it kicks the real rebuild project down the street for at least another year. Chris: I find it absolutely baffling that United fans are comparing Ten Hag to Ferguson! Ask any fan of any other club in the Premier League and they will unanimously tell you that watching on as a neutral it is clear to see that Ten Hag is a nice guy but simply not good enough for this level. He isn't Premier League. It really is that simple. Jules (a good-football enjoyer), Kent: Successful clubs seem to be the ones that give the manager a fair chance. With all the takeover hoohah it feels like the right decision to stick with EtH. It will be exciting to see what Man Utd can do this coming season. Nick, Kent: United sticking with ETH should be seen as a breath of fresh air in the rinse and repeat cycle for the club. They’ve saved themselves from being set back another year. Sam, Portsmouth: The United job is still one of the biggest in football, and has been a poisoned chalice since Ferguson left. People seem to forget the club is falling apart, literally and figuratively. Ten Hag has come into an almost impossible job and won a trophy in each of his two seasons. Yes, United have been awful in patches, but have they honestly been any better in the 11 years since Fergie dragged a weak squad to one last title? Robin: We must remember that it took several years for Sir Alex Ferguson to impose his authority on Manchester United before breaking through spectacularly with the Class of 92. The Busby Babes took even longer to reach fruition. I’m willing to allow Erik ten Hag a further season to introduce new young players into the team and develop them alongside the exciting FA Cup winners. George: Erik ten Hag deserves at least another six months - winning two trophies in two years with this shambles of a system and club is worth persevering with! It’s the third year so if United aren’t in the title conversation come October it’s time to move on, but he deserves the chance to start this season right. Mike: The main reason for sticking with Ten Hag is nobody else wanted the job and realistically why would they? Can the money be worth the hit to your reputation? The rebuild process can only really start when they have got rid of the failing stars on massive contracts and spending regs are only getting tighter. There are plenty of better jobs out there. Matt, Birmingham: I think the lack of viable alternatives has been the deciding factor for Ten Hag. If they had gone for one of the options currently available, they probably would have been in the same position in 12 months time with someone like De Zerbi or Potter. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/6/12/0f6543f0-9d1f-49fb-aeed-592cab64f99e.jpg

Fenerbahce are interested in 29-year-old Manchester United and Sweden defender Victor Lindelof. Juventus are interested in Manchester United winger Jadon Sancho but, because of his £40m price tag, they could be forced into a loan with the option to buy. Manchester United remain interested in Bologna's 23-year-old Netherlands striker Joshua Zirkzee, but the high commission involved in any deal is complicating the situation. United are evaluating whether to make an approach for Genoa's Spanish goalkeeper Josep Martinez, despite Inter Milan having already agreed personal terms with the 26-year-old. Winger Amad Diallo is set to remain at Old Trafford and is a key part of Erik ten Hag's plans.

Manchester United to cut 250 jobs..by Simon Stone, BBC Sport.ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/742/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/7/3/d9fc76e9-e3b6-4a1a-868f-ae5244d7fbfe.jpgManchester United are to cut 250 jobs as part of a determination to slash costs and scrap some "non-essential" activities. United director Sir Dave Brailsford has led a wide-ranging review of club operations since Inoes’ co-ownership of the club was confirmed in December. Sir Jim Ratcliffe had already told staff of his desire for them to return to working from club premises. However, club sources now say financially significant transformation is required to halt the steepling rise in year-on-year costs. The review has concluded, structure-wise, the size and shape of the club does not reflect the current football performance and they have more staff than they need. Sources say cost savings have been identified around "non-essential" activities, which are to cease. It is yet to be clarified what these activities are, but the aim is to reduce headcount and employee costs. United have about 1,000 full-time members of staff. The move is bound to be greeted negatively, with many pointing out poor recruitment around the first team has wasted far more money than will be saved by cutting the rank and file workforce.

Manchester United are preparing to trigger the £33.8m release clause in the contract of Bologna's 23-year-old Dutch striker Joshua Zirkzee. Manchester United and Liverpool have both made bids for Lille's Leny Yoro but the French defender, 18, wants to join Real Madrid. Meanwhile, former United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy has been approached to be part of the new coaching staff for manager Erik ten Hag. Manchester United are expected to meet the 40m euro (£33.9m) release clause for Bologna's Netherlands forward Joshua Zirkzee, 23, and have also held talks with Lille over a deal for 18-year-old France Under-21 defender Leny Yoro. United are hoping to fund the signing of Zirkzee by selling forward Mason Greenwood. Everton expect Manchester United to make another bid for 21-year-old England defender Jarrad Branthwaite. Manchester United have held talks with Juventus about signing Adrien Rabiot, but face competition from Arsenal and Aston Villa for the 29-year-old France midfielder. Barcelona could be interested in a loan deal for 24-year-old English winger Jadon Sancho after holding talks with Manchester United. Manchester United are considering selling the naming rights to Old Trafford to help raise funds. Saudi side Al-Hilal are weighing up a surprise move for 19-year-old Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho, who is currently at the Copa America with Argentina. Paris St-Germain are considering a move for Manchester United's Marcus Rashford and could step up their pursuit if they receive encouragement the forward is open to joining them. Manchester United are unlikely to pursue a deal for Barcelona defender Ronald Araujo despite the club's long-standing interest in the 25-year-old Uruguay international. Manchester United have offered 24-year-old Netherlands defender Matthijs de Ligt a five-year contract, as they continue transfer talks with Bayern Munich. United would make another move for Jarrad Branthwaite if Everton drop their asking price, but the Toffees are under no financial pressure to sell the 22-year-old England defender. Matthijs de Ligt is interested in a move to Manchester United, with Bayern Munich valuing the 24-year-old Netherlands defender at 50m euros (£42.4m). United have made a move to sign Bologna forward Joshua Zirzkee, though AC Milan have already agreed personal terms with the 23-year-old Netherlands international Manchester United are willing to listen to offers for Harry Maguire this summer, with clubs in Italy interested in the 31-year-old England international. The Red Devils have also not ruled out the possibility of allowing 26-year-old English forward Marcus Rashford to leave this summer. West Ham are interested in signing United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka with the 26-year-old Englishman having less than 12 months left on his current contract. Manchester United are keen on re-signing Tottenham's 27-year-old Spain defender Sergio Reguilon, who spent the first half of last season on loan at Old Trafford United would also consider a sizable offer for captain Bruno Fernandes, 29, but the Portugal midfielder is expected to stay at the club and sign a new deal. Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, 25, is expected to be involved pre-season next week amid interest from United, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Manchester United believe kit deal to be largest of its kind..by Simon Stone, Chief football news reporter.ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/480/cpsprodpb/c04f/live/5c139980-37a3-11ef-bbe0-29f79e992ddd.jpgManchester United will wear the Snapdragon logo on the front of their shirts next season. United unveiled the new design on Monday, with the logo part of the new three-year deal with US-based Qualcomm Technologies, which will net them in excess of £60m a year. The kit will be worn in pre-season, part of which will see them play in the Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego when they take on La Liga outfit Real Betis on 27 July. United believe the deal to be the largest of its kind in the world, and it also contains the option to extend by a further two years. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/558/cpsprodpb/a0dd/live/40dc8f40-3781-11ef-a780-47cb50223b50.pngManchester United have released their new home kit for the 2024-25 season. They say it is "built for the new era" and "ready for what comes next". The shirt features the classic red tones of the club and has orange detailing down the side that feeds into the black shorts. It is available in long and short sleeves.

The Red Devils have opted for a simple design for the upcoming campaign, which will see them compete in the Europa League once again.
Here are your thoughts on the new strip:
Martin: All of the kits under the new brand have shown a lack of imagination. I don't think much time has been spent on any of the designs. Michael: I love the new home kit. I think it looks classy. Steve: The shorts are terrible, they are just a basic take on the pattern that is doing the rounds at the Euros. The top is very bland and uninspiring. Fingers crossed the second and third strips will be better. Anthony: Great. Clean. Classic. However, £80 for an adult short-sleeve shirt is ridiculous. Craig: I much prefer last season's home kit. I don't like the orange and the line at the back of the shirt doesn't go with the rest of it. I wish they would just stick to the basics.

Keeper Tom Heaton signs new 1 year deal..ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/54f7/live/327cec90-387d-11ef-8a0a-5d92815c72ec.jpgManchester United goalkeeper Tom Heaton has signed a new one-year contract. The 38-year-old rejoined the club for his second spell in 2021 and has made appearances in the Champions League and Carabao Cup since. "I am delighted to continue my stay at my boyhood club," Heaton told club media. "I still feel in great shape and I am ready to offer whatever the squad needs throughout the season ahead. "In addition to on the pitch, I am learning so much off it for my next steps, whatever that may be. "I want to push the squad to build on our successes from last season."

Here are some of your answers:
Adam: Brilliant and sensible news. Now we can build in the right way and move forward. Hope to make it three trophies in three years. Well done Erik! Mark: It was a no brainer to keep ETH. Two trophies in two seasons and the worst injury list in the league last season was a main cause behind finishing eighth. Ten Hag was unable to implement his strategy or style of play due to the injuries and I expect a similar season to his first season in charge and hopefully another trophy. Jon: I think he deserves it. He worked under impossible circumstances last season, even though I do think he was naive tactically at times. If he doesn't improve this season, then he'll be gone, but I like his disciplinarian attitude with the superstars. Stephen: I think it is a good thing that Ten Hag has signed a new deal as it brings some stability. However, he still has to quickly develop a style of play that fits with the ethos of Man Utd. Brian: I think it’s a terrible decision. He doesn’t have a clue on tactics or man management and should have been sacked 12 months ago. He not only makes himself look daft in interviews but also the club and management if they think he’s right in anything he says. John: There is no question that Ten Hag is not the man for this job, despite two trophies. The way the team plays (or doesn't play) is awful, with no plan and no strategy. It's all off the cuff. Ten Hag has no personality and looks frightened to death, but we require a leader of men and a style of play. No more back four football please. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/0899/live/494c7220-3a0c-11ef-bbe0-29f79e992ddd.jpg

What De Ligt would bring to Old Trafford, if he signed...by Josh Lobley, BBC Sport Researcher.ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/7d54/live/610c55a0-39ef-11ef-9106-7b8942fc70ac.jpgBringing a centre-back to Old Trafford appears to be a priority for Manchester United this summer. The club have shown an interest in Jarrad Branthwaite, Jean-Clair Todibo and Lenny Yoro, but their pursuit of Bayern Munich's Matthijs de Ligt seems to be the most advanced. On the surface, there is plenty for United fans to get excited about. Still just 24 years old, the defender is already very experienced and successful, having played for three European giants in Ajax, Juventus and Bayern Munich. De Ligt has won multiple trophies and been to three major tournaments with his country. His time at Ajax, particularly the period under United boss Erik ten Hag is arguably what de Ligt is most known for. He became a mainstay in the Ajax defence, captaining the side to a league and cup double in 2019 and being a key member in their run to the semi-finals of the Champions League. Given how much trust Ten Hag put in de Ligt during their time at Ajax, there is little doubt the manager would be keen for a reunion in Manchester this summer. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/dee6/live/96d5dda0-39ef-11ef-a044-9d4367d5b599.png

Manchester United will hold a meeting about transfers on Monday which will include making a decision about whether to make another bid for 22-year-old Everton and England centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite. Mason Greenwood wants his future sorted out in the next week with Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Juventus, Lazio, Marseille and Valencia - who have made a £25m bid - interested in the United forward. Meanwhile, Bayern Munich will get 20m euros if United trigger Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee's 40m euros release clause, having negotiated a 50% sell-on clause when they sold the 23-year-old Dutchman to the Italian club. Manchester United and Arsenal are ready to compete for the signing of England defender Marc Guehi, with the 23-year-old set to reject Crystal Palace’s new contract offer. United are considering a surprise move for Chelsea's England left-back Ben Chilwell, 27. The Old Trafford club are expected to meet Joshua Zirkzee’s £34m release clause to sign the 23-year-old Netherlands forward from Bologna. United are deliberating over whether to trigger that release clause or negotiate a higher fee that would allow payments by instalments. Mason Greenwood is set to join Marseille in a permanent deal, with United moving closer to selling the forward for £35m.

Andy asked: There was one example against Switzerland where Luke Shaw ran around Phil Foden on the overlap and took two defenders with him. For me, that's the perfect example of why Gareth Southgate took Shaw and why he has to start on Wednesday. What do you think? Phil replied: I would be very tempted - if I was convinced in my own mind that Shaw was fit - to start him against the Netherlands. We presume Southgate will know that. He looked very good when he came on and, as you say, gave England more of a balance and attacking threat on the left, where they have struggled at Euro 2024. Southgate, however, is a huge admirer of Kieran Trippier, speaking in glowing terms about him pretty much every chance he gets. He not only sees him as a key player but often talks about Trippier’s outstanding communication and the way he talks colleagues through games. He thinks that is a bit of a dying art in the game and Trippier is one of the best. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/dfd7/live/37c56140-3d38-11ef-b4a6-3b1b50d91225.jpg
