Saturday 27th April 2024 - Premier League
Manchester United 1 (Antony 79) Burnley 1 (Amdouni 87 pen)

Report By Simon Stone, BBC Sport chief football news reporter at Old Trafford.Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana cost his side victory as Zeki Amdouni converted a late penalty to grab a priceless point for relegation-threatened Burnley in the Premier League at Old Trafford. Despite another unconvincing display from Erik ten Hag's men, they did look set for victory thanks to Antony's well-taken 79th-minute effort. But, just as he did on the opening day against Wolves, Onana recklessly charged from his line in an attempt to punch the ball clear but hit an opposition player instead. Although referee John Brooks missed the incident in real time, unlike against Wolves the video assistant referee, Peter Bankes, stepped in. Substitute Amdouni recovered from being on the wrong end of Onana's fist to send the keeper the wrong way. The result moved Burnley to within two points of fourth-bottom Nottingham Forest, whom they play at Turf Moor on the final day of the season. "We've earned the right to believe and hope," Burnley manager Vincent Kompany told Match of the Day. Kompany said "the task is to do something special" against Newcastle next Saturday, before Burnley travel to Tottenham the following week. "We have an opportunity on that one day against Forest," he said. United, meanwhile, are still to win successive league games since February and, with new technical director Jason Wilcox watching on, boos from the home fans greeted the final whistle, although they were not as loud as the ones triggered by Ten Hag's decision to take off teenage midfielder Kobbie Mainoo after 65 minutes. Man Utd 1-1 Burnley: What Erik Ten Hag said: ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/cab7/live/7c1e1420-03d8-11ef-9c0d-4b4b207c6d59.jpg Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has been speaking to Sky Sports following the draw: "A strong start to the game, loads of chances, then we lost in control in the second part of the first half when Burnley came back in the game and had some chances. The second half was all ours and we are in a winning position, but we gave the game away at the end. "Very frustrated, it shouldn't happen. You put yourself in difficult positions. Over many phases of the game we did very good, so at the end we have to take the three points and the clean sheet. We gave it away again at the end. "We put ourselves in a winning position by playing some good football, creating loads of chances, and then to give it away in the final minutes is so unnecessary." On whether the dropped points have been down to bad luck or mentality: "Both. We have not been lucky with the refereeing in recent weeks. We have conceded so many penalties - this one is justified but other ones [aren't]. If you make [Aaron] Wan-Bissaka in the final a penalty, then what is this [Alejandro Garnacho penalty claim]? Where is the consistency? "We have to look in the mirror. We made a mistake, but you take responsibility. They should understand what it means for a team and for a manager."

Borussia Dortmund will try to turn 24-year-old England winger Jadon Sancho's loan move from Manchester United into a permanent deal this summer. Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United are interested in Brighton's 20-year-old Cameroonian midfielder Carlos Baleba. Everton may have to sell 21-year-old English defender Jarrad Branthwaite to comply with Financial Fair Play rules, opening the door for a move to Manchester United.

Scott McTominay says injury 'nothing serious'..i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/04/29/19/84233187-0-image-a-66_1714417029695.jpgManchester United and Scotland midfielder Scott McTominay hopes to be back "soon" after describing his injury as "nothing serious". The 27-year-old left the field in discomfort after playing just 26 minutes as a second-half substitute in United's 1-1 draw with Burnley on Saturday. However, he suggested on social media on Monday he will make a return sooner than he had feared. McTominay was Scotland's top scorer in Euro 2024 qualifying with seven goals and is expected to feature in Steve Clarke's squad for the finals. "I slipped and fell awkward on my knee, similar to against Chelsea," McTominay wrote on Instagram. "Nothing serious, just hyperextension, but I was angry and upset that I thought it was worse than it was. "Hoping to be back on the pitch very soon to help the team as much as I can."

Here are some of your answers:
United fans
Bob: Erik ten Hag has lost the plot. I've said it before and will say it again - he is a mediocre manager out of his depth. If it wasn’t for McTominay scoring a few crucial goals, Ten Hag would be gone. He has to go. I'm bored of listening to him once a week, goodness knows how the players put up with him. Scott: Manchester United need a good clear out this summer of the players that are either past their best or just simply not good enough, after numerous years of waiting or chances - Rashford, Wan-Bissaka, Eriksen, Casemiro. Not to mention Onana, who has cost us far too many times this season. We will never get anywhere with him between the sticks! Will: Little has changed since the early season Champions League games. While my instinct is to blame the manager, especially after another Onana error, the fact remains - something deeper is wrong at the club. Until that is fixed, the manager cannot be solely responsible. Moyes, Mourinho, Rangnick, Van Gaal, Solskjaer, Giggs, Carrick... let's give Ineos time. Graham: Yet another scrappy display, without any real team structure. Yet another winning position lost through a dreadful header by Casemiro, and Onana then conceding a penalty. Are there any other teams who have lost as many matches from a winning position with just minutes on the clock? Extremely poor decision-making. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/4db5/live/a6c063a0-063e-11ef-9733-bdd69412715c.jpg

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/096b/live/1421ec80-0607-11ef-bee9-6125e244a4cd.jpgBBC Sport's chief football news reporter Simon Stone has been answering your questions. One fan asked what he made of Erik ten Hag's latest pronouncements on Manchester United versus Coventry City, picking fights with media and making claims on the entertainment his team provides? Simon replied: Well, on the entertainment front, he’s not wrong is he? Manchester United are entertaining. But I am not sure conceding late goals and making games that seemed to be won full of jeopardy is the kind of entertainment their fans want. On the ‘picking fights’ front, he is perfectly entitled to his view. He has to defend his position. I just feel on the Coventry game there was a difference of opinion. Ten Hag admitted United made mistakes – but they got through, which is the main thing. I, and colleagues in the media, felt being 3-0 up against a lower league side and only avoiding being knocked out by a marginal (correct) VAR offside decision was embarrassing for a club of that size. It is clear Ten Hag is getting more forceful in his defence of performances and results. That is a sign of pressure. It is also a sign that a decision will soon be made on his future. i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/04/28/22/84196725-13360101-image-m-128_1714339315479.jpg

Juventus are the leading the race to sign Manchester United and England forward Mason Greenwood, 22, who is on loan at Spanish club Getafe. Manchester United are planning to stick with manager Erik ten Hag next season because of the lack of a clear alternative, alongside the cost of firing the Dutchman. Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo has told his club he will not sign a new deal when his current one expires this summer with Manchester United, AC Milan and Liverpool all interested in his signature. Barcelona and Uruguay defender Ronald Araujo, 25, is deciding whether to sign a new deal with the Spanish club amid interest from United and Bayern Munich. Marcus Rashford might find his options limited if he chooses to leave Manchester United, with Paris St-Germain cooling their interest in the forward. Ajax are keen to reappoint Erik ten Hag as manager if he is sacked by United this summer, although no decision is expected on the Dutchman's future until the Old Trafford side play Manchester City in the FA Cup final on 25th May. Meanwhile, United are still planning to appoint Dan Ashworth as sporting director this summer, with the expectation that a deal over compensation will be agreed with Newcastle United soon.

We asked for your opinions following comments on BBC Radio Manchester's The Devils' Advocate podcast that Manchester United's football this season is some of the worst fans have seen at Old Trafford.
Here are some of your comments:Roger: I have supported United since 1957 and this is the worst I have seen them play. They are moving the ball too slowly and often backwards, and many players just do not look interested. I think the coaching must be at fault. Peter: The worst thing about Erik ten Hag's side this season is the mental frailty of the individual players - the exceptions being Martinez, McTominay and Garnacho. We have a captain who sulks and does nothing to lift his team when we concede bad goals. But the last months of Moyes' team were hopeless - far worse, with no invention or moments of hope. Chris: Worst football in my lifetime and I’m 43 years old! We can’t seem to avoid the cycle of hiring and firing managers who initially have some success then can’t get a tune out of our supposedly top quality players. It’s a Catch-22 - get rid of Ten Hag and a new boss is left with a lot his signings and a huge job to change the team! David: As bad as United are playing at the moment - and let's be honest, it's dreadful - I do have some sympathy for Ten Hag. He really hasn't had a settled team at all this season and regularly has four or five of his best players missing. Then add the fact some of the players he relies on are strolling around nonchalantly. Look at the U18s now and there's hope. Kevin: Ralf Rangnick was correct when he said two years ago the United squad needed open heart surgery and every position strengthening. Unfortunately, Ten Hag's transfer dealings, with the exception of Martinez and Hojlund, have made the team worse. Ryan: Ten Hag needs to stay as Manchester United manager. Do not sack him - give hime the chance to sign some players in the summer transfer window. We need players like Jarrad Branthwaite, Kieran Tierney, Edmond Tapsoba, Jeremie Frimpong, Joao Gomes and Pedro Neto.

Bruno Fernandes will 'definitely' stay at Man Utd - Ten Hag..By Simon Stone, Chief football news reporter.i.dailymail.co.uk/1s/2024/04/30/17/84278865-13367791-image-a-3_1714495198934.jpgManchester United manager Erik ten Hag is convinced captain Bruno Fernandes is committed to the club. Fernandes gave an interview to DAZN, external last week in which he appeared to cast doubt on his future at Old Trafford. Ten Hag says his quotes were "taken out of context" and believes Fernandes, who has a contract to 2026, will "definitely" see out his current deal. "I know he is Manchester United and I think he is very happy to be here," Ten Hag said. The United boss has repeatedly defended Fernandes, whose captaincy has been criticised on numerous occasions since he replaced Harry Maguire at the start of the season. In October, former United skipper Roy Keane called for the armband to be taken away from the 29-year-old. However, Ten Hag feels Fernandes leads by example, including playing through pain as he might have to do at Crystal Palace on Monday after missing training last week with a wrist injury. “Taking responsibility is one of the biggest assets top footballers have nowadays to show and to deliver,” said the Dutchman. “Bruno is a very good example for many other players. He is a real fighter. Last year when we played Brighton in the [FA Cup] semi-final, he played with an ankle that was so thick. It was unbelievable. He couldn’t run but he was still on the pitch. “He is always available, always delivers and always gives energy to the team. Such assets are necessary to be successful.”

Manchester Utd's Harry Maguire faces FA Cup final fitness fight..By Simon Stone, Chief football news reporter.i2-prod.mirror.co.uk/incoming/article32738093.ece/ALTERNATES/s1200e/0_GettyImages-2150463539.jpgManchester United defender Harry Maguire faces a race against time to be fit for the FA Cup final after suffering a muscle injury in training. The club estimates the injury will keep the 31-year-old out for ‘about three weeks’. United play holders Manchester City at Wembley on Saturday, 25th May. The England international joins a list of defensive absentees, with Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof, Lisandro Martinez, Willy Kambwala and Jonny Evans all ruled out for various lengths of time over the past few weeks. Brazilian midfielder Casemiro has partnered Maguire in central defence for the last three games. It was thought Evans might be available for Monday’s trip to Crystal Palace after he returned to training last week.

Borussia Dortmund want to keep 24-year-old England winger Jadon Sancho next season, but a permanent move from Manchester United is currently unlikely and not affordable for the German side. Manchester United are hoping to raise £100m by selling on-loan Jadon Sancho and 22-year-old England forward Mason Greenwood this summer. United held talks with Sancho in March, during his loan spell at Borussia Dortmund.

Midfielder Casemiro, 32, has faced scrutiny for his recent displays, with a lack of mobility cited in some quarters. Carragher told Sky Sports: “I think Casemiro should know tonight that he should only have another three games left at the top level. The next two league games and the cup final, then he should be thinking, I need to go to the MLS or Saudi. "This has to stop because we are watching one of the greats of the modern time. I always remember the saying 'leave the football before the football leaves you'. The football has left him. At this top level, he needs to call it a day at this level and move. "The level of that player, he should not be putting himself through this. He is too good of a player to be putting in a performance like that being laughed at by Crystal Palace. He needs to call it a day."

ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/d13f/live/f1ac4610-3b6c-11ee-bde6-7ffba94c56ae.jpgReport by Alex Turk, Fan writer.ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/b408/live/86f38e90-007f-11ef-8f9d-f36fcaa5063a.jpgIt’s the morning after the night before. Crystal Palace 4-0 Manchester United felt like the end for Erik ten Hag. Like Watford 4-1 Manchester United did for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Like Liverpool 3-1 Manchester United did for Jose Mourinho. Like that four-game losing stream in December 2015 did for Louis van Gaal. And like Everton 2-0 Manchester United did for David Moyes. Ten Hag’s players surrendered at Selhurst Park. Only 12 senior outfield names travelled but there is no excuse for what became a Bank Holiday battering in the capital. The squad’s under-performers can’t escape criticism. They should’ve been embarrassed to receive an incredible ovation from United’s first-class away support, who had been disregarded by more scheduling. But the worry for Ten Hag is that eight of the players who were ripped apart by Palace were his signings across the last two years. Jonny Evans wasn’t fully fit and has earned respect for stepping in as United’s only available centre-back. But along with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Antony and Sofyan Amrabat, he shouldn’t be at the club next season. Ten Hag’s fate is likely sealed, now. But Ineos must be just as ruthless with their squad clearout. Alex Turk can be found at Stretford Paddock

Here are some of your answers:
Manchester United fans
Paul: Another new low for United. Embarrassing shambles of a performance. 4-0 flattered us. No desire, no ability, no care, no teamwork. Palace played the whole game in third gear and beat us easily. It could have been 8-0 if Palace had gone into fourth gear. It is hard to support the players at the moment and the manager must take some blame. We look a disorganised mess. Jo: I actually don’t think they were any worse than they have been for much of the season. This has been a scenario waiting to happen. Every team we play have a myriad of chances to score and they have wasted their opportunities. The difference on Monday was Crystal Palace took theirs. Gav: Chalk and cheese. A team giving everything for their manager, with exciting wide players - against a team who clearly have given up and a manager who is not prepared to try anything different. Same every week - conceding numerous chances but even more worrying now not making any! Arsenal and Manchester City will destroy us on that performance. Andy: All I can say is well done Palace. I should have been 6-0. United are awful! The worst side I’ve ever seen. Erik ten Hag did inherit a broken side - but his signings have made them worse still. He has to go. The whole squad bar three players should go. Start again with the youth. It simply cannot get any worse. Something has to change. ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/800/cpsprodpb/e50b/live/4acb94a0-0c44-11ef-bee9-6125e244a4cd.jpg

Report by Phil McNulty, Chief football writer at Old Trafford.Arsenal returned to the top of the Premier League and ensured the title race will go to the final day with victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford. The Gunners delivered an unconvincing display against a severely depleted United side but did enough to secure the win that puts them one point ahead of Manchester City having played a game more. Leandro Trossard struck after 20 minutes when lazy defending from struggling veteran Casemiro played Kai Havertz onside and his cross was turned in by the Belgian at the near post. United showed plenty of endeavour but suffered from a glaring lack of quality and never seriously tested Arsenal keeper David Raya, as their own hopes of European football next season faded further. Arsenal must now hope north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur do them a favour by getting a result at home to Manchester City on Tuesday. The Gunners host Everton in their final game of the season next Sunday, while City are at home to West Ham.

FT: Man Utd 0-1 Arsenal ichef.bbci.co.uk/news/594/cpsprodpb/vivo/live/images/2024/5/12/4a9bbc7b-f0dc-4d0e-a3c5-2ed20f2f3958.jpg
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, speaking to BBC Sport, on whether there were more positives to take than from Monday's defeat at Crystal Palace: "Yes, but it's still disappointing. I want to win, it doesn't matter who we face on the pitch. We have to win every game and give everything. On Casemiro's mistake which led to the goal: "It's small detail, one layer makes a mistake and it opens up. Before that in possession we could have done better in better positions and better options. It's details." Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag, speaking to BBC Sport, on injuries to his defence: "We've talked all season about this. To have a backline who play together regularly and have routines is obviously better. "You need players who have confidence to play there, we have players playing in positions who are not used to them and then you make mistakes. "At a high level you are punished. Or you have to play players who are not fit. That's the situation we are in." Man Utd boss Erik ten Hag, speaking to Sky Sports, on his team's key improvements: "The attitude, it starts always with the right attitude during the week and on matchday you have to be spot on. "When we missing seven starting 11 potential players we are still competitive with one of the best teams in the league. "When you don’t have the right attitude to find the moments to press or you don’t make the recovery’s then you make it very simple for every opponent." On Casemiro's error for goal: “In that situation he is a midfielder playing in that position and making a small mistake, but it has hard consequences. "I think for United players every game is a final and you have to perform and win every game - we should realise this.” On the fans: “They understand where we are and where this club is. We have so many injuries in key areas they [fans] don’t get what deserve, but they understand this and that is why they are behind the team. “I think that is why they are with us we are united and hopefully we can pay them back in the future.” More from Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag on being able to influence the team and turn things around: "I have no doubt about this. "As human beings and my experience that will always happen once in three months when you are not in the right attitude. "But, mostly this team has the right spirit and they execute the rules and principles of the game even if they have to adapt in their positions. “I can only be happy and it is a big compliment for this team that they executed all that they could and they were fighting."
