Manchester United have completed the £47.2m (55m euro) signing of goalkeeper Andre Onana from Inter Milan.

The Cameroon international, 27, has signed a five-year contract, with the option of a 12-month extension.

The deal is worth an initial £43.8m plus a possible £3.4m in add-ons, and the former Ajax keeper is set to join up with the United squad on their pre-season tour of the United States.

"To join Manchester United is an incredible honour," he said.

"I have worked hard all my life to get to this moment, overcoming many obstacles along the way."

Onana will replace David de Gea as United's first-choice keeper, with the Spaniard having left in July when his contract expired after 12 years at the club.

"Walking out at Old Trafford to defend our goal and contribute to the team will be another amazing experience," Onana added.

"This is the start of a new journey for me, with new team-mates and new ambitions to fight for.

"Manchester United has a long history of incredible goalkeepers, and I will now give everything to create my own legacy in the coming years."

Manchester United gained bragging rights over rivals Arsenal as first-half goals from Bruno Fernandes and Jadon Sancho sealed a 2-0 friendly win at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

The match was played in front of a stadium soccer record crowd of 82,262.

Fernandes celebrated being appointed United's new captain by beating Aaron Ramsdale from 20 yards, although the Arsenal keeper could have done better.

And Sancho doubled the advantage with a powerful shot into the top corner.

The winger, playing as a false nine in an outfield line-up manager Erik ten Hag changed completely at half-time, finished after speeding on to a mistake from Gabriel.

However it was not all good news for United, who lost forward Amad Diallo to injury minutes after his introduction at the interval.

Manchester United have released their new away kit for the 2023-24 season.

The club says the shirt, which brings back the vertical stripes from two decades ago, "celebrates the past while embracing a fresh look", adding: "The night-green base represents the urban landscape that Manchester is renowned for."

An Adidas spokesperson said: "Vertical stripes are in the DNA of Manchester United.

"We have intentionally taken cues from the city itself, to provide both the players and travelling fans with a piece of home, wherever they are wearing it."

United will wear the kit for the first time in their friendly against Wrexham in San Diego (kick-off 03:30 BST Wednesday).

The comparisons between Erling Haaland and Rasmus Hojlund are obvious.

Both are over 6ft with a mop of blond hair. Both are ruthless in the final third. And, by the start of the new Premier League season, both could be playing for Manchester clubs.

Speaking on Monday, United manager Erik ten Hag said the club had made progress in their search for a new striker.

Hojlund, 20, remains the most obvious target, though the Red Devils are reluctant to meet Atalanta's £60m valuation of the Denmark international.

But what would he bring to the Premier League and United's attack, and can he really rival Haaland?

After youth spells at Boldklubben af 1893 and Brondby, Hojlund began his senior career at Copenhagen, making his debut aged 17 in 2020.

Still developing, he struggled in the Danish Superliga as a youngster, leaving in January 2022 having failed to score in his 19 league appearances - though only two of those were starts.

He joined Austrian side Sturm Graz - a move that turbocharged his career.

Across the second half of the 2021-22 season, Hojlund scored a goal every other game, netting nine times in 17 starts.

Hojlund caught the eye with his lethal left foot and impressive footballing brain. The striker became exceptional at moving into space, timing runs to perfection to set up a wide variety of finishes.

His form led to a move south to Italian club Atalanta for a reported £15m, 10 times what Sturm Graz had paid for him in January.

That figure now looks like a bargain.

Last season he scored 20 goals in 47 appearances for the Serie A side and Denmark, whom he made his debut for in September.

In March, he struck five goals in two European Championship qualifiers for the Danes, including a hat-trick against Finland.

How does Hojlund match up against Haaland?

So the potential is there, but when you compare his numbers with Haaland's, Hojlund is a long way off the Norwegian.

Haaland hit 36 goals in 35 appearances for Manchester City in the league last season - a goal every 77 minutes. In Serie A, Hojlund found the net every 204 minutes.

That said, Haaland had a record-breaking season, is two years older, plays for the European champions and is further along in his career.

Hojlund has only had two full seasons as a professional. In Haaland's second season, he managed a more modest 12 goals in 25 appearances for Molde.

So while Hojlund is not the finished article, he can be moulded and refined and may become the perfect fit for United's starting XI.

There have been glimpses of how lethal Hojlund can become - and his goal against Lazio last season was Haaland-esque. As Ademola Lookman started a counter-attack down the left wing, Hojlund sprinted from the halfway line, squeezed past two defenders and slid in to reach a cross.

With support from wingers such as Marcus Rashford, Alejandro Garnacho and Jadon Sancho, United could boast one of the fastest front threes in the Premier League.

But Hojlund also has a delicate touch and he dribbles more than Haaland - averaging about 10 more touches per match.

In a sense, he has the qualities of a winger, but the physique of a number nine.

United are in need of a centre-forward. With Anthony Martial spending much of last season sidelined through injury, Rashford has become the team's talisman.

The England striker was exceptional last term, scoring 30 goals in 56 games - one every 143 minutes. But his best position is wide on the left, cutting in on his stronger right foot.

United chose not to sign Burnley loanee Wout Weghorst on a permanent deal at the start of this transfer window.

They have privately ruled out making approaches for Paris St-Germain's Kylian Mbappe and Tottenham's Harry Kane, who are both world-class frontmen.

What they would get with Hojlund is raw potential.

But there are signs of quality, glimpses that suggest he is on the path to stardom.

Northern Ireland defender Jonny Evans will stay with Manchester United for the rest of their United States tour.

The 35-year-old, who left Leicester at the end of last season, signed a short-term deal with his former club to cover friendlies with Lyon and Wrexham.

Those games have passed, and United boss Erik ten Hag explained why Evans and teenager Joe Hugill have been kept on with the first-team group.

"We need the numbers in the coming days in training," Ten Hag said.

"As you see, Fred is not here and also [Anthony] Elanga went back [to join Nottingham Forest]. We need the numbers for proper training to hit our targets and that's the reason they are here."

Evans played in the Lyon and Wrexham games and will train with the squad in preparation for Sunday evening's encounter with Borussia Dortmund in Las Vegas.

Manchester United have made a verbal offer of 50m euros (£42.8m) plus 10m euros (£8.5m) in add-ons to Atalanta for 20-year-old Denmark forward Rasmus Hojlund.

Paris St-Germain, who are also interested in Hojlund, have offered a higher salary to the player whose priority is a move to Manchester United.

Manchester United have rejected a £20m bid from West Ham for England defender Harry Maguire.

Hammers boss David Moyes is keen on Maguire and has funds to spend following the £100m sale of England midfielder Declan Rice.

Maguire's Old Trafford future is uncertain after he was stripped of the captaincy by Erik ten Hag earlier this month.

The Dutchman has said the move could help the 30-year-old regain his form.

United would be prepared to listen to offers that matched their valuation - if Maguire indicated a willingness to leave.

However, the centre-back is believed to currently be earning £200,000-a-week at Old Trafford, which is significantly more than the highest earner at West Ham.

Maguire was appointed skipper by Ten Hag's predecessor Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in January 2020 - five months after signing for £80m from Leicester City.

The England international, who has 57 international caps, said he was "extremely disappointed" to lose the armband but would "continue to give my all" in the shirt.

Maguire played in 31 of the club's 62 matches in all competitions during the 2022-23 season, including eight Premier League starts, with Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes captain in his absence.

Maguire's contract at Old Trafford ends in 2025.

Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez were favoured over him at the heart of United's defence last season, and when the latter was injured, Victor Lindelof deputised.

England left-back Luke Shaw was also deployed at centre-back on several occasions by Ten Hag.
