Some very interesting points are emerging from the Ukraine regarding Russia weapons/tactics and outcomes. They appear to have a real shortage of precision weapons. They have failed to achieve real air superiority. They still follow the old Soviet doctrine of 'deep strike warfare'. I will go into more detail tomorrow, but basically they are still fighting a war from the 1970's. If the US or the UK got into them it would be a repeat of the carnage inflicted on Saddams boys.

I saw an interview with a guy from the Royal United Services Institute who spoke along similar lines. Not quite the same, saying that the Russians had much improved their capabilities in recent years but were still employing tactics from 30 years ago.

Judging by the tower blocks etc being hit in civilian areas, the Russians either lack precision weapons, or the personnel to use them properly. Or maybe they just don`t care.

Your last sentence sums up those fascists, Alf.

is there still a thing as in the Geneva Convention, where the likes of the russian bloke and his compatriots can be issued with a warrant for arrest for crimes against humanity/genocide ,,, time for some mercenaries and SAS types to emerge

Secondly, taking out a Head of State would be taken as a declaration of war.

Possibly a more successful strategy in a big country? When you are outnumbered and outgunned the last thing you should do is go nose to nose......step back and strike selectively. Hit the easy targets and isolate the strong ones. Fight smart.

Your last sentence sums up those fascists, Alf. The ubiquitous fascists, eh? You`ve been listening to Oldie too much. Vladimir Putin...fascist. Communist party of China...fascist. Bus driver, five minutes late...fascist.
The only people who don`t appear to have been fascists, were the Baader/Meinhoff faction. He approved of their murderous activities.

Not so Alf. I think the far left (Baader Meinhoff for example) ,the far right (Hitler etc) and all round tyrannical b*****ds like Putin are fascists by definition.

Germany has woken up! For many years they have cut defence spending. They spend nowhere near the 2% of GDP that is mandated by NATO. Their defence forces are actually a complete shambles.
Today, they have announced that defence spending will be increased to 3% of GDP. In the next year they will spend 100 billion on defence. To put that in context I think the UK defence budget is about 60 billion. This is the new cold war with every free country in Europe increasing defence spending.

Russia's GDP is less than Italy, circa 60% of the UK. Given the economic capacity of NATO, with the EU's largest economy now joining in big time, what realistic chance would Russia have in a conventional confrontation with NATO? Of course it would be carnage on both sides, but the reality for Russia?

Makes it all the more mystifying to me, why Putin`s done what he`s done. The result of which, is to unify European nations in a common purpose. Against him, no less.

Ok. That being the case, why did you have such admiration for the murderous rampage of a fascist group? "Heady days." God, you truly are dense. Why so? You agreed with Dr F, that the Baader/Meinhofers were a fascist group.
You also used the forum to state ( and repeat, when I challenged you ) that you looked back on their time in the sun, as "Heady days." If you could leave aside the insults for once, why does my pointing out your stated admiration for the activities of a fascist group, make me dense?
