The MOEX Russia Index is down 40% today. It's basically crashing. It's their biggest slump on record, and it's only 10.30am !.....sorry, make that 43.5%. It's going down as I type ! He`s going to turn his country into a pariah state. I always thought Putin was a shrewd and calculating politician, but it appears not. I still think he could have got what he wanted, without sending in troops. Witness Western leaders falling over themselves to talk to him, even a week ago. We live in interesting times.

"Thanks for the detail. I hope we are not defending Ukraine (to the degree that we are) for those reasons. Rather than to defend the right of Ukrainians to choose their own path." I'm glad you think like that Oldie. It's the same principle as the people of the UK deciding to leave the EU. However, I'm not that sure about you personally defending the right of British people to choose their own path. Come on Nobby, that's ridiculous. I took part in a democratic process. Just like everyone else. Your statement is a classic false equivalence. The point Nobby made, seems valid to me. Why is it a false equivalence?

Yep, back to the invasion.
This means a whole new Cold War. Every free country in the region will be spending more on defence. Putin has put the clock back 40 years.

What allies do Russia have?
Who are united (to a greater or lesser extent) with Ukraine?

What allies do Russia have? Who are united (to a greater or lesser extent) with Ukraine? China? You watch how they will push with taiwan in the next 6 months if the west continues showing weak leadership. These are scary moments indeed...a new cold war has sadly began.Putin will not stop with the Ukraine, he will push further. This is the scariest moment in Europe since WW2.He wants a return of the USSR. This would never have happened under Trump. Love him or hate him he is a leader, a fighter. Putin would never had tried this under his Trump's term in office. Biden is a weak, old man and Putin has taken this chance because of it. We need leadership here, but what Im worried about the leader of the free world doesn't have any of those skills.

Well, countries like Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and maybe Poland didn't have any NATO troops stationed there. None at all. I am willing to bet that by now they have all been in contact with NATO to offer bases for NATO troops. They will all welcome US/UK troops there with open arms. Putin didn't want NATO on his doorstep apparently, even though they have been there for 18 years. Now, each of those countries will be full of NATO troops and bases. The very thing he said he didn't want is now guaranteed to happen, which once again proves that his whole argument regarding NATO is false. I see the first 800 US troops arrived in Latvia today. There will be more.

Astonishing that some on here ignore Trump's pro Putin stance How many new war's started under Trump's watch? Answer None. The world was a far safer place while he was the leader of the free world then it is today,FACT.This can't be argued, debated or span in anyway as it's confined to the history books that Trump was peaceful president dispute what some would have you think. Putin is a nasty, evil bully. He clearly wants a return of the USSR and as soon as he saw weakness from the west he has struck. He did it under Obama also with Georgia. While Trump had little Rocketman from North Korea under his thumb by basically saying in non polical terms ("Hey you may have a couple of nukes in you back pocket, but don't mess with me as I got 6000 of the f**kers!" ) Trump kept his friends close, but his enemies closer and he did that in regards to Putin and the Russia.

That is so naive and ill informed it does not warrant debate. Believe what you will, just don't drag us down with that absolute BS...

See sometimes you have to put things in basic, stupid terms to get a point across like I did above whether you are ignorant or not to it. FACT....it's a FACT.. no new war's started under Trump and Putin never would have done today's actions if Trump was in power. But I guess there will be someone blaming Trump for Putin invasion of Ukraine today.

Look it's a hopeless situation ,is'nt it? Out gunned left, right and centre. Ar'nt they? I'm not doubting the bravery and military expertise of Ukraine, it's just they are going to struggle.Ar'nt they? Civilian casualties will influence the result. The 'West' can't join in the fighting or WWIII begins. Please tell how Ukraine win then.
