Have to say Bruce Bannister was my favourite nowadays we have lots of players with three names - THD, JCH, JML etc back then we had a player with lots more than that, even if the first 6 were all the same

Yep great memories, watched all three games - The goals against Southampton were slotted away nicely -although I had on occasion cursed him, like the snake, his one on ones weren't great. UTG

I'd have thought for most people it would be the player who captured their imagination when they first started going. For me that would be Lee Archer.

Geoff Fox - an attacking full-back with a sweet left foot. Paired up with Harry Bamford and a half-back line of Pitt, Warren and Sampson. Geoff moved to Swindon in 1955, far too early in my opinion. He was also an accomplished minor county cricketer and like many of the players I was lucky enough to watch, a Bristolian. #UTG

Are you still North East based?
It's interesting what captures the imagination. I absolutely know that objectively Lee Archer was at the very best a slightly above average 3rd tier winger. I've also seen 3 England internationals play for Rovers who were undoutedly the best technical players I've ever seen in the Blue and White Quarters - Marcus Stewart, Mark Walters and Rickie Lambert*. I don't think that's bad going really considering, unlike yourself, during my time as a Gashead I have never seen Rovers play a single minute above the 3rd tier. Yet Lee Archer is my favourite ever Rovers player and will always be so and it's not even particularly close.
I put it down to watching my early games in the Family Enclosure in the corner at Twerton and Archer rampaging down that left side. Of course now I know that the main reason for that was Stewart being a genius at playing him (and others) into space but at the time he seemed like a force of nature. He did score the first ever goal at the Mem too which means he has a significant part of our history - snuck one under the illegally crossbar as I recall.....
*I've been attending games since 1993/94 season - I'm pretty sure that Stewart, Walters and Lambert are the only England internationals we've had play for us in that time (I know we've had several other internationals in that time). Stand to be corrected though- can't help thinking I've missed someone obvious......

My son was born in January 1994. I blame him for us not witnessing a game in the 2nd tier since May 1993 (Millwall away). Just the 26 years then... So the closest we've got to the 2nd tier was being 3-1 up against Northampton after the 1st leg of the play-offs in 1998. Thugs, b*stards, cheats. Let it go. (Reaches for another beer).

By the way -it turns out I completely invented Marcus Stewart playing for England. How on earth did I get that lodged in my head?! Having a superb day on the cockup front.....

cockups. Solution: cocktails. Yeah I'm trying to stick to only drinking on a Friday in current circumstances....I'm not sure that's been one of my better decisions!
