Coppell worked with Garner in India both coached a Club over there. Dunne helped Coughlan on voluntary basis before getting permanent role. Who remembers Trolls and Lawrence double act....young inexperienced coach/manager and very experienced manager that worked well. Who remembers Dennis Rofe and Malcolm Allison double act...that ended badly Rofe resigned and Big Mal ended up drunk most evenings in Hotel in Keynsham.

Did a great job at the 82'ers... (from wiki) ... "on 11 August 2010 after only four months in charge, Coppell resigned as bristol city manager, saying that he would retire from football management altogether citing a lack of passion for the job." In charge for 2 games at the sh*tpit. W 0, D 0, L 2. Legend. Welcome Steve.

Its messy though surely? I mean nobody said lets get coppell in when coughlan quit did they? why is it messy? and why should they? Because coppell has not been a manager in this country since he walked out on city 10 years ago. Because it smacks of "i cannot cope" from garner. It will push mansell/maher aside. If it does actually help i suppose all that wont matter but to me its messy.

Happens in all walks of life in the real world. Why should it be a problem in football

But Maher and Mans aren’t the finished articles either so it will be a good opportunity for them to learn from an experienced head. SC is a strange thing, he walked out on City after a very good record with Reading and winning promotion at Palace but then he’s knocked about with various jobs not doing anything of note. He has a decorated career though and I’m sure his knowledge will help.

My observation is that the current management regime isn't working so if the Board (Not sure who is left?) feel that action is needed then that is their decision to make. Who knows if there are issues between the coaching staff behind the scenes but bringing in a man of Coppell's experience to report to the board can't be anything other than a good move imo. It shouldn't take him too long to come to a conclusion so let's wait and see what happens.

Coppell know's the north west like the back of his hand so probably called in to show us the best route to Tranmere!

Its messy though surely? I mean nobody said lets get coppell in when coughlan quit did they? Perhaps but I suppose no one told us Lennie was coming in to help Trolls but that seemed to go well so this, as a short term measure might be worth it. UTG!

Nothing messy as I see it. Let’s hope it helps and we see improvement. I do see that it could possibly end up undermining Garner but there is no point in what ifs right now IMO

If I recall, coppell had some depression issues which was behind him leaving city. I realise this is ripe for a joke, but let's not. A rated coach, with an exp ex manager and world class player who's not getting paid, if people are going to find negs in this then you will find negs in everything.

Steve Coppell has managed over 1000 games and has a win rate of just under 40% mostly lower league teams at the time.
I see nothing wrong with helping out in any way he can, let's face it we need all the help we can get.
We have gone 14 games since our last win in the fa cup game at Plymouth, we are in free-fall.

To all the people who replied to my slightly negative post about coppell coming in. I hope your right. I think you were wrong with your first post. Garner seems quite arrogant to me, not the sort to admit that he wasn't able to cope. Said after seeing the total farce of Garner's attempts at match day tactics 2 or 3 times that he was utterly clueless, was a coach maybe but most definitely not a manager at this stage, so needed help. That doesn't mean that he can't become a manager, but today he's still towards the bottom of a steep learning curve. No idea why it's taken this long for whoever is making decisions at Rovers to work it out.
