Interesting what you’ve said irish about the GM clubs. And you’ve done it without even mentioning Salford. I see them doing well as a vanity club for all the ex-Man U players and hangers on that have been attracted to them. Their support looks to be still embarrassingly low and with so much competition in the area unlikely to grow. Yet they will do well because in Gary Neville they have a driving force that the other class of 92 aren’t. He will, with Peter Lim drive the club forward and as long as the “project” continues they will provide the finance. Once Peter Lim’s money or his motivation dries up so will the club. Is there even a fanbase the size of Rochdale or Bury there? The attendance at Wembley for the National Final was embarrassing. If the fans can’t get themselves up for that they will struggle when they have a few bad results in League 2. But if that happens, Neville and the rest will throw Peter Lim’s money at the team and will survive but in front of crowds of 2000. Spent some time in south Manchester once upon a time and Stockport was a sizeable community but I never thought Salford was and it’s become more gentrified so I don’t know if it’s got the fanbase to grow. Didn't mention Salford because they're not a proper football club - they're a PR project! File in similar bracket to Wigan - they'll go as far as the money takes them when the money dissappears they will plummet because there's not really a club underneath it. Although in fairness to Whelan at Wigan I think it really was investment in his passion and in the town. I imagine that the plan is for Salford to become a kind of Man United B club for United fans to follow. But FC United already take the lions share of that market and are much more convincing as an alternative fun club to support. Sure you can do a bit of low level glory hunting at Salford but there's no fan culture or atmosphere there. It's a crap place to watch football. If the 'class of 92' wanted to do something for local football then they should have invested in one (or a number) of the struggling GM clubs. Gary Neville could have invested in Bury, his father's club. Scholes in Oldham etc. But contrary to the PR it's not really got anything to do with football - it's about the property investments they have (with Lim) in Central Manchester. It's just something that helps grease the wheels when the council starts asking about 'community value' and commmitment to the area. A few years ago I had a very long conversation about Rovers with Tony Smurfit, now CEO of the Smurfit-Kappa Group, and asked him if he would consider getting financially involved with our club. He showed a great interest in the potential of the UWE Stadium development but said if he ever were to invest in a club it would likely be Wigan Athletic. His father Sir Michael Smurfit had sent Tony, as a young man, from Ireland over to England to help run the company's British interests which were then based in Wigan and he had become a fan of the football club. Eventually he got to know their owner Dave Whelan who was generous enough to allow him to "borrow" the FA Cup for publicity purposes after Wigan won it in 2013. www.wiganathletic.com/news/2019/july/smurfit-kappa-signs-up-as-a-shirt-sponsor-of-wigan-athletic-football-club-back-of-shirt/

Basically the only way to feel IMO is happy for Rovers that we are already 12 pts clear of two teams. Makes it easier for us. Selfish but no one would feel sorry for us. No one did when we went down to the Conference. Not true, we had quite a few fans saying they couldn't believe it etc.

Southampton turned 12 points around And Leeds i seem to remember Yes Leeds started on -15 points when they were last in League 1. They won their first 5 matches so were on 0 points after 5 matches and still made the play offs that season.

Bury's opening League One match of the season against MK Dons will be suspended if they do not provide proof of their financial viability by Monday.
The English Football League is still awaiting details of how the club plan to settle their debts after a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) was approved by creditors on 18 July.
The Shakers have already been deducted 12 points by the EFL.
Their fixture against Dons is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 3 August.
"The EFL board met today in respect of the ongoing matters at Bury FC where it determined that if the league is not in receipt of the previously requested information by 12:00 BST on Monday, 29 July, then the club's opening day fixture with MK Dons will be suspended," an EFL spokesman said.
"Both Bury and MK Dons have been informed of the league's position."
MK Dons said they were "very concerned for everyone at Bury" and hoped the match could still go ahead as planned.
Bury were originally given a deadline of Thursday to give evidence of how the terms of the CVA will be met and threatened with potential expulsion from the EFL in two weeks' time.
An EFL statement on Thursday said it had requested the information - which includes the "means of payment of outstanding football creditor debts" and "source and sufficiency of funding" - on several occasions.
The Shakers are still looking for new ownership after Steve Dale put the club up for sale in April.
They are also due to reappear in the High Court next Wednesday after a winding-up petition taken on by HM Revenue & Customs over an unpaid tax bill was adjourned in June for a third time.

Bolton game going ahead Bury's game postponed. EFL Decision: www.efl.com/news/2019/july/efl-statement-bolton-wanderers-and-bury-fc2/Where to from here for Bury? Further to the EFL’s statement issued earlier on Monday 29 July 2019, the following updates can be provided:BOLTON WANDERERS At its meeting today, the EFL Board was appraised of the position in regard to the outstanding information requested in respect of ongoing matters at Bolton Wanderers.
The Board has fully considered the Club’s further submissions and is satisfied that they are sufficient to meet the requirements of the League subject to the completion of formal documentation.
As a result the EFL Board has opted not to suspend their opening day fixture with Wycombe Wanderers and it will remain as originally scheduled on Saturday 3 August 2019 at 3pm.BURY Following continued and comprehensive discussions with the ownership at Bury and other interested parties throughout Monday, the EFL Board is not satisfied it has received the necessary evidence in regard to the outstanding information it requires that demonstrates how the Club will be funded moving forwards.
As a result of not meeting Monday’s 5pm deadline, which had been extended on two previous occasions, the EFL Board feels it has been placed in an unenviable position and, regrettably, has opted to take the reluctant decision to suspend Saturday’s opening day fixture with MK Dons under the provision of EFL Regulation 28.2.
In addition, the EFL Board, if not in possession of the necessary evidence by 12pm on Friday 2 August 2019, will make a determination as to whether to suspend Bury’s away fixture at Accrington Stanley on Saturday 10 August 2019.
As has been the case throughout this entire process, the EFL will continue to offer its full assistance to the ownership at Bury, but remains clear that while the League is here to support the Club through some extremely complex and complicated issues, the outstanding matters can only be resolved with the cooperation from the Club itself.

The EFL have been a complete disgrace over this. No backbone what so ever.
I dont particularly want either club to go bus, but Bury robbed mansfield and 22 other teams last season, were allowed promotion but could go out of business. How is that acceptable and fair to the other clubs?

How is that acceptable and fair to the other clubs? Football is just getting more and more weird. So much money at the top, bringing desires beyond acceptance. We want want and want more and more. We have 7000-8000 proper fans, I know we could get more with better this and that. I want a stadium as well, but id settle for a couple of new stands at the Mem, and keep the club going forwards, and I always want upwards, the latter I haven't seen that much of since I started in 1972.

Yes I’m very sad for the fans but what have they got to do to get thrown out of the league? Despite knowing the start date of the league it’s clear and has been for weeks that neither club are going to be in a position to start on Saturday. Every other club has worked to the same timetable and will be able to kick off yet these two clubs won’t. The EFL have lost whatever credibility they still had over this. Both clubs have had warnings and deadlines pushed back because they, or potential new owners, have said they would be ready next week or so. But never were. I feel sorry for Wycombe (I know I shouldn’t) and MK Dons because they would have been working up to this only to have it delayed through no fault of their own. Bury and Bolton should now be on a final warning, complete by a certain date, within a week, or they forfeit their league place. Then the EFL should have an extraordinary meeting to announce how they will allocate places for this coming season's relegation places so that everyone knows what they are playing towards this season.
Yes I feel sorry for the fans but Bury fans had a decent watch last season because their club decided to spend money they didn’t have and Bolton have been doing that for years without much thought of how they were cheating other clubs and other clubs fans. And perhaps taking such action now would finally knock sense into clubs all over about only spending what they can afford.
Will this happen? I doubt it, another fudge will be decided and they will avoid any such drastic action. There will be a photo call about how everything has now been sorted out. Lots of businesses will go out of business but no one will care about that and the clubs will survive and those involved will smile, shake hands and quote about how hard everyone’s worked to sort it out. Only for it to happen again at both clubs within a year.
A cautionary tale to us at BRFC and all other clubs I hope.
UTG!

Who gives a f about Bolton or bury. They have probably never heard of us and don't give a f about us either. It's dog eat dog out there get used to it. I do. Both traditional football clubs run into the ground by incompetent owners. I am also pretty sure they would have heard of Bristol Rovers. When we got relegated out the league I was pleasantly surprised how much support we received from other clubs, and that even includes the sh*t. It's not quite dog eat dog. The EFL needs to look at their own rules and apply them. 'Losing' Bolton and Bury would be a wake up call to dozens of clubs (ours included) that unless you live within your means you are going to go bust. I predict a number of clubs are going to go to the wall over the next couple of years. It's all about sustainability. What say you Kegan?

I think most Bury fans would quite happily still be in League 2 or even take a relegation to the Conference if it meant stabilising their club. All the ones I've spoken to have said that promotion was an added complication to everything because it raises some costs - they knew this was coming and the more sensible ones realised that going up made no sense.
I honestly think there's a real chance they could actually fold here. No one is convinced there is any buyer out there - perception is they are just stalling for time at this stage. How many games would the EFL suspend before kicking them out?

Exactly. Bury are not Bolton, or Pompey

Bolton Wanderers have travelled with just three senior outfield players ahead of their League One opener against Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.
The Trotters went into administration in May while a protracted takeover of the club is still to be completed.
This week, the English Football League (EFL) set Bolton a deadline to show evidence of financial viability before the Wycombe match could take place.
The club met the deadline as the takeover was expected to be completed.
EFL: Inside a summer to forget at Bolton Wanderers and Bury Three of Bolton's pre-season games have been cancelled, with players saying they had not been paid for five months prior to a planned match against Chester.
A takeover of the club by Football Ventures was due to be completed at the end of last week but, on the eve of the new season, is still yet to go through.
not looking too good .... as per Bury... how long will the EFL tolerate this and other clubs not knowing wether their fixture with either will take place,,,,

Reading the BBC website tonight made me wonder even more about Bolton specifically. Whilst not wishing ill will on the club it seems to be descending into an even bigger farce. Tomorrow Bolton go to Wycombe with 3 senior players so the result should be very interesting. If any club fielded a team with only 3 senior players which could be a weakened team they would probably be fined. My point is any club facing Bolton within the next 3/4 weeks is going to have a serious advantage as opposed to those clubs facing them later in the season. This could seriously disadvantage any club esp if it effects promotion or relegation. I don’t expect the EFL to do anything about it but I bet any club facing Bolton in these first few weeks will be laughing all the way to the top of the table! UTG!

The logical thing would have been to not let either of them play until their situations are sorted one way or the other. The teams lined up to play them could play each other on the scheduled weekends. Too easy a solution I guess.

Far too complicated for EFL I'm sure there's some issue with police on rearranging games, but it would make sense
