In League One, Peterborough made the most profit in the season to mid-2018. Blackburn, Charlton and Wigan had about 5x, 3x and 2x the losses incurred by Rovers. In this graph Rovers (and three other clubs) had yet to report 2018 results. (Click on the pic). I sense the need for a deeper dive into the accounts of the 6 clubs that were able to make a (modest) profit. Without looking, you get the feel that Peterborough have managed it through shrewd wheeler-dealing in the transfer market, but I'd be willing to be proven otherwise.

If I am reading it right, "Non recurring costs" of close to 2.3 million - the stadium fiasco? The upside is that assuming they are one off costs the figures would look more in line with what you would expect. Still not good though. From memory, yes, that was all written off in the year ended June 17 So what created the even bigger loss in the year ended June 18? More stadium costs, which have now been written off? (I seem to remember that much of the £2.3m above had previously been capitalised, but was written off ib the first period/accounts under AQ ownership) Didn't click with me that chart was only up to 2017. That is worrying.

Yes, one good deal and your accounts can look great! This from the Peterborough Telegraph (Thursday 23 May 2019): "When Posh sold striker Jack Marriott to Derby last summer in a £4 million deal, lucrative clauses relating to the future success of the Rams and Marriott were inserted.
One involved Derby reaching the Premier League. If they beat Aston Villa in the Championship play-off final at Wembley on Monday (May 27), Posh are expected to receive a seven-figure bonus, although a percentage will go to Luton.
Luton sold Marriott to Posh for £450,000 in June, 2018. The 24 year-old scored 33 goals in his one full season at London Road. ... Posh will also collect £50k from Sunderland relating to Jack Baldwin’s transfer if they win Sunday’s League One play-off final against Charlton".

I seem to remember a few years back that only Hereford made a profit, and they got relegated that season. If that's correct and not my memory failing, then 20 clubs not losing money sounds like an improvement? Very true that, Graham Turner was brilliant at unearthing talent that cost peanuts on 1 year contracts. The reality surrounding Hereford United’s demise hovers like the sword of Damocles over the majority of clubs. Turner gave football agents short shrift, when David Keyte took over the club these parasites immediately took the piss and we all know where that ended.

These losses are par for the course if we continue to recruit from outside of the club. Mercenary players and agents have landed us in this mire and the end will always be the same, financial disaster. We have to bite the bullet and as with times past bring our own players through and yes any that are any good sell on to keep the club afloat. I would rather see a side of young players making mistakes than a side full of overpaid wasters that couldn’t give a s**t.

I'm not sure those are entirely good. I'm not sure I can make sense of what's going on here. Can anybody say, from the accounts, what the gross income was please?

What I'm looking for is a gross income figure, we can then easily work out what the remaining 3% is and compare that to other expenditure. I'm intrigued by this thing of spending 97% of income on wages across the organisation. Our gross income must be massive if 3% of it covers all of the other stuff relating to running the club.

Ground maintenance and improvements, travel, all insurances, accountants, vehicles, catering, advertising, agents fees (if any), bank charges, all of those annoying things that erode the bottom line like the cost of phone lines and internet services, fuel for vehicles, everything, really? Even if we didn't spend a penny anywhere else that would give us a budget of £8000 per home game for programmes, catering for hospitality, pasties, security, etc etc etc. Is there something about these accounts in terms of company structure that I'm missing please?

We earned 5 815 958 but we spent 8 968 183 so the gross loss was 3 152 225 In the Chairman’s report to shareholders there is no mention of these huge financial losses or any strategy to tackle them. So it is quite amusing that as the report waffles on about our academy we are told that one of the key strategic core areas they are working on is economic management.

And this is the exact point I was getting to. Wael was making a 'non-point'. It didn't matter if he was saying that the 96~97% was just player wages or if it was for all staff costs, if he even knew, it's a huge distraction from the fact that the losses are enormous. That's what I would like to hear him addressing.

This is a perfect example of how it's done. Put forward a number that suggests that you are ploughing everything in to the team. If you are sat at an AGM without the accounts in front of you it's not easy to work out exactly what's being said. It sounds like almost every penny is being spent trying to push the first team forward, but of course that's not the case. Now, next question, how do we square those numbers away with SMCP?

It sounds like almost every penny is being spent trying to push the first team forward, but of course that's not the case. Now, next question, how do we square those numbers away with SMCP? Yes, I also think that is exactly the reason he said it and it shows he continues to depend completely on fans’ gullibility. The myth of the SMCP rules preventing investment in players has been exploded many times but Wael still persists with it. The latest spin is that we are taking the moral high ground by sticking to the rules even if it stops us competing. And fans often boast how proud they are that our owners don’t invest in shares or make donations to allow us to exceed the SMCP limits because it shows we are being responsible by trying to achieve sustainability. But as losses rise to unprecedented levels any fans who actually ask whether this is sustainable are accused of trying to undermine Wael ?
