Excellent news, every Rovers supporting little boy or girl should be able to aspire to play for their club.

I used to sponsor every team at every level of the last group of Gas Girls. The decision at the club to stop funding them was a difficult one but hopefully the current owners will see it as a long term exercise and also receive the backing of local business’s.

I do not know the ins and outs (but still willing to comment) but the Community Trust is funding the team as I understand.

Looks to me that it's nothing to do with the current owners.

I just hope that our supporters don’t think that without serious investment we can compete at the highest level of women’s football. When I was involved we were struggling to pay the wages at the club but funding flights and accommodation for overseas players for the women’s team. The plug had to be pulled.

I think people know that that ship has sailed - just look at the names winning things nowadays, it's the 'usual suspects' only but it's part of being a rounded modern club, I think. Especially if it wants to be a club rooted in the community, rather than, say, an international business

We had a great 'Gas Girls' team formed in 1998. I saw them a few times, the highlight of which was a WFA Cup tie played in front of 3000+ fans at the Mem. Then due to penny pinching by a short sighted Board of Directors they moved form Rovers, became 'Bristol Academy' in 2005, then in 2016.......well you know the sad story.
I wish this new venture well, but so sad we have t start from scratch again after 21 years.

Still, not to worry, you now have an opportunity to show us all that you won't let history repeat itself, I'm sure the club will be delighted to hear from you with your offer to invest in our new Ladies set up.

You seem to take the view that unless you are a Lansdown, Higgs or Al Qadi then you should have no say in your football team! I've supported Rovers for 50 years, I'm a small shareholder in, I've spent a large amount of disposal income on match tickets, programmes replica kit, scarves, books, helpline, 50/50 tickets etc. over these years, so I'm entitled to my opinion. If you look at the percentage of their total income that most ordinary fans spend on supporting their team in a year, I expect it surpasses the percentage of income spent by the wealthy few. The axing of the first incarnation of the Gas Girls WAS short sighted. The entire budget for a year was probably less that the annual salary of one average quality 'journeyman' player. Yet it was clear even then that women's football was growing, and if we'd ket the side going then it would have ultimately met more younger fans for the first team too. It was a bad decision then, and I'm pleased to see a women's team making a comeback. As to investment, well I'm no millionaire, but I would be happy to be a kit sponsor etc. as I am for the main club.

From reading various threads it seems the owners are not keen on others investing.

It was a bad decision then, and I'm pleased to see a women's team making a comeback. As to investment, well I'm no millionaire, but I would be happy to be a kit sponsor etc. as I am for the main club. Hey, don't get me wrong, we all do what we can, most of us have sponsored hopeless players that nobody else ever would, I've got drawers full of shirts that I would be embarrassed to wear. Probably John Beswetherick is the pick of them. Remember him? However, it's not hard to find Directors from that period and speak to them, some were handing over far more than they thought they ever would to try to keep the first team going. One bought his shares for £50,000, then the next week was asked for more money. He knew then that his £50k was gone and would never be seen again and that was just the start of it. There sometimes seems to be a perception that people who own companies or drive nice cars are always wealthy, having access to money and being wealthy are entirely different things. Yes, the numbers are relative to available funds, but when you have your home re-mortgaged to invest in your business interests and you are giving money that you should be investing in your business to the FC it's not just about you, you have your domestic situation to consider and a responsibility to your staff. I'm not sure it's entirely fair to say that having to draw a line somewhere is penny pinching. But as you quite rightly say, we are all entitled to express an opinion.
