Last two league matches starting with one striker. Is this typical, brave to start with nothing to lose, as soon as you get the job you start to tiptoe about...? Despite our league position I don't see a point at Accrington as an achievement, of course that seems arrogant, I actually mean I believe we have a team capable of winning there and id like to see a couple of strikers.

It is to be hoped, Rex, that you're not taking Bambi seriously. You set that bar nice and low, it helps with avoiding disappointments in life. Maybe we should give the players a medal and a commemorative T-shirt for competing in the event? Nope but the SC are arranging the bus tour as we speak....

We got a point at a ground where we normally get none. We didn't concede again. We extended the unbeaten run
Is it really that difficult to see all the above are positives, or is it just easier to be tiresome in the constant criticism of all things Rovers that some seem to prefer?

So out of interest, to maybe understand who we should be playing, what are the 20 clubs we have played the most in league football?

Nope but the SC are arranging the bus tour as we speak.... Unfortunately Wael was carried down Gloucester Road on Saturday night so we've pied it off.

So out of interest, to maybe understand who we should be playing, what are the 20 clubs we have played the most in league football? Average League Position as of Febuary 2018
Well, going on this League 1 should be made up of;
1. Huddersfield PL 2. Preston North End CH ------------------------- 3. Blackpool L1 4. Swindon L2 5. Notts County L2 6. Swansea City CH ------------------------ 7. Oxford United L1 8. Plymouth Argyle L1 9. Bournemouth PL 10. Bradford L1 11. Bristol Rovers L1 12. Walsall L1 13. Rotherham CH 14. Wigan Athletic CH 15. Brentford CH 16. Tranmere Rovers L2 17. Port Vale L2 18. Gillingham L1 19. Leyton Orient CN 20. Carlisle United L2 ------------------------ 21. Grimsby Town L2 22. Shrewsbury Town L1 23. Southend United L1 24. Peterborough United L1
So in real terms we're 9 places down on our 50 year average. I've decided to do a bit of maths to see where we'd be placed this century on our average position, last seasons finish of 13th in League One would be 57th in the league so;
2000/01 - 65th (R) 2001/02 - 91st 2002/03 - 88th 2003/04 - 83rd 2004/05 - 80th 2005/06 - 80th 2006/07 - 74th (P) 2007/08 - 60th 2008/09 - 55th 2009/10 - 55th 2010/11 - 66th (R) 2011/12 - 84th 2012/13 - 85th 2013/14 - 91st (R) 2014/15 - 94th (P) 2015/16 - 71st (P) 2016/17 - 54th 2017/18 - 57th
That's an average position of 74.06 or 6th in League 2, currently 10 places down on where we are. Let's make no bones about it, that's more like our level than our current position. Of all the clubs currently in League One realistically only Accrington and AFC Wimbledon currently have facilities that are comparable to ours. Accrington have just this summer built a new stand and have purchased some land surrounding the Crown Ground. Wimbledon are just about to break ground on their new stadium. This will leave us with one of the worst facilities in the football league if not the worst (depending on Macclesfield's status).

I am enjoying the forum's new 'excitement-o-meter' being controlled by Bamber.
If you are ever unsure about how excited or depressed you should get about a Rovers result, just PM Bamber and he will be happy to tell you how to feel.
We can disregard DrFaustus' comments regarding form and Chewbacca's historical analysis - it was two points dropped on Saturday, boo indeed.

So out of interest, to maybe understand who we should be playing, what are the 20 clubs we have played the most in league football? That is an interesting question. Stockport,Workington,Southport,Torquay,York, and a few more that Rovers used to play are much lower down these days. Bournemouth,Cardiff,Swansea,Fulham are higher up now than when they played against Rovers. Interesting though history is I wonder how much relevance anything that happened more than 10 years ago is ? 20 years ago Stockport were higher than Man City (I think that's correct) but I think that's unlikely to happen again. Rovers were a 3rd tier club that sometimes got into the 2nd tier,the last 20 years have been more a 4th tier club sometimes getting into the 3rd tier, the next 20 years could be totally different.

It takes a promotion goal with about 30 seconds of the season left to stop me marching into the ticket office and demanding a refund. Having said that, Jim's meltdown that followed the Daggers game was pure comedy gold.

Well, going on this League 2 should be made up of; ............ Chewbacca has put forward the answer that follows most logically from the discussion about Rovers’ proper station in the natural order of things. The average League position is a better answer to "Who we should be playing" rather than "who we have played the most", to my way of thinking. However, laughingsas’ question did get me thinking. So, I’ve started a new thread to provide the answer. Link to Familiarity Breeds Contempt
