Bloody hell that is a poor performance.... Yet still worth 5. He must've started really bloody well. He peaked at 3, max.

Before Saturday, I'd only been to see Rovers at Charlton once. That was Saturday 26th August 1978. The ground has changed massively in the intervening 39 years, of course, but I found it difficult even to map the current stands onto my memory of the ground that I'd visited as a teenager. Here's a view, as was, from the south terrace (now the Jimmy Seed stand, that housed us Gasheads on Saturday). In 1978, I stood on the huge east terracing (right of picture, above), looking down on what seemed an absurdly small West Stand (left of picture, above). This black-and-white photo from the 1970's, below, shows the full extent of the terracing. It swept right round the east and south sides of the ground. I noticed on Saturday that you can still see the ends of the terrace steps at either end of the Jimmy Seed (South) stand and at the far end of the North stand. And how did Rovers get on in that match back in August 1978? We lost, 3-0...

Great pictures GasMacc1,I was at that game in August 78,3 of us went and we sat in the small stand. I went again in March 1980 after a roof was put on the south terrace. The east terrace was huge,I read somewhere that it was the biggest terrace in England at one time,I remember that bits of it were fenced off as unsafe and had bramble bushes growing through the concrete.

You didn't fancy the trips to Oldham or Sunderland, then? That was good going; I only went to the Charlton game. I don't think I went to the 6-1 defeat...or if I did, I've blotted it out of my mind. And to think that they only had another four years of existence after that.

The 6-1 was on my birthday too ! in my memory Rovers scored first ?
Yes although they went bust in 82 I have always wondered when it started going wrong financially, looking back it must have been over several years.
Rovers away form was poor in the 2nd division years but those years 77 and 78 I really enjoyed going away,as I was still an apprentice you can see how cheap admission and travel were back then.

James Clarke was injured. Partington not trusted for that amount of time due to injury. Only other option was Broom to play there! Or burns or even the full back albeit a left back that we had on the bench

May work defensively but our width come from full backs, not sure a left footer would work going forward.

Official away following 2,174 - very good.
But if that end holds 3,000 away spectators, did anyone see where the 826 spare seats were? Some empty bottom right (as you look out to the pitch), but if the capacity of that end really is 3,000 then the figure given seems a good few hundred out.
- Worst shout from TBBM: "COME ON! We've got to get out of this s*** league."

Yes it was a disappointing result, but the advice usually given, when playing 10 men, is to be patient, pass the ball around, look for space, wear them out and break them down. To a large degree we tried just that: tried to keep ball and find the spare man. Generally though it was out wide, and a combination of a poor centre, or poor positioning, let us down in the final third. Having said that you have to give Charlton credit for keeping us at bay, and cutting out and clearing all our crosses. They also had a couple of speedy play-makers, who the ball always seemed to break to, and able to ease the pressure.
On the Linesy playing deep comments and likening to a 'quarterback', they seem to give the impression he sends a long ball every time. Far from it, he mixes it up very well: sometimes a long ball, but generally looking for the best pass. I haven't got a problem with it, especially against 10 men, as he's looking for the pass to a man in space. We retain possession and he picks it up again, later in the move, further up the pitch.

Agree that Lines was far too deep - he was almost playing like an American Football quarterback. But with Lockyer's distribution so poor perhaps he felt he had little option but to drop deep and pick up the ball. I didn't like Charlton's tactics but I guess we would have done the same if we were down to ten men. I did think they kept the ball well though and were far more street-wise
