Looking at some of the crowd photos from the Mem it has often struck me the club has work to do to encourage and develop a more multicultural support base. This initiative at Bradford City looks great and could perhaps be replicated at the club. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p0536jp7

Very valid point. Used to see a group of 3 black guys who no longer come. Never see Asians, Indian or Pakistani fans. Really is Hugh time this changed

Well done to the op for putting this video on here. There is a massive untapped potential for muslims and all ethnic minorities for football clubs like ours. I work with some somalian guys and they really enjoy their football but tend to follow arsenal or chelsea but most have never actually been to matches. We do have a percentage of supporters who are not white/british but we should be reaching out for more imo. Not scoring points but i know bristol city have almost no ethnic minority supporters, sad imo.

Really? last time i was there i didnt see any! what do you base your opinion on? Going there. Wish I had the money to do both, as dad did with us. I've always been gas as that was a no brainer. Kingswood boy, could walk to Eastville with mates and get bus fare from parents. The gallows humour etc. As the son of Polish parents we spent lots of time in the St Paul's area, other Polish had bought homes there and I played in the park by the back of the empire. All city and all mates. In fact I was often the only white kiddy. The young Poles mostly supported city too and only due to the red and white flag being close to their kit. On Darby days you'd have seen who my allegiance is too. Thing is I have good city friends, the type who would turn up within 10 minutes had I been having a bad time somewhere. I won't turn my back on that. I'm not a hater though used to be selective in that when younger Pick ANY of their home games then see the difference.

16 per cent of Bristol's population belongs to a black or ethnic group so there certainly is untapped potential there. Football is a global sport these days so it shouldn't be that difficult to attract people, unlike back in the 50s and early 60s. Eastville was right next door to St Pauls but I don't think the West Indians who first came here had a footballing culture as such. It took a generation or so before their offspring came onto the scene. It would be good to see the club promote this.

So much falls out of that clip, most of which though I feel we already really knew. People ask why are there so few players from ethnic minorities, but football was/is not part of their cultures, rather like asking 30 years ago why were there no American players or why Lord's is half full of BME supporters when West Indies, Pakistan or India play? I feel the Kick it Out campaign was/is patchy and mostly ineffective. From what I have seen from my visits to Bradford FC it is surrounded by a British Asian community; the Mem for example is in a student heavy/white middle class area. Bradford is proud of its working class origins and obviously local integration projects have made it easier for ethnic minorities to go to the ground along with some reduction in racism from away fans; it's easier for a group of twenty or so British Asians to merge into the crowd though than one Asian player on the pitch. Any initiative needs someone to get off their rear and do something as was shown in the clip, and he is probably second or third generation British born. It's better to see local kids in local colours rather than Chelski or ManUre - Bradford's big crowds with a good atmosphere along with recent success helps. It's a subject which many tiptoe around, but it needs confronting head on; quoting percentages and bringing in quotas such as the Rooney Law (the one about having to intervew at least one BME applicant for football posts, not having sex with grandmothers) is flawed.

I'm nor trying to hijack or take away anything from constructive debate, but...
Thing is, from a very early age I've attended matches.
Some of them alone. Some of them with family. Some of them with partners. Some of them with friends. Some of them with a combination of all of above.
Since 70s.
I'm sorry to disappoint anyone but ethnic groups have been in and amongst my crowd from then until now, but it's part of growing up and never given anymore thought than someone whom is tall, fat or rich or a pagan.
Maybe I'm privileged. I just see blue and white as the important colours because that's all I've been used to..
I honestly think if someone is Gas in their heart, there is no real discrimination within.
I'm sure there are singular instances to counteract this..

Better to attract the many thousands of students in our City. They would boost gates .....why? They wouldn't spend anything. Mst probably don't come from Bristol.. Affiliated to other clubs. Bath Uni tried this a few years ago with little financial success.

Its fair to say students usually go around in small groups and drink ...more income to spend on their leisure time...so yes Better Some students go around in small groups and drink. Lots of others don't drink at all. It rather depends on their culture. The wealthier and Asian students seem not to fit this profile. As for income, I think a lot of students have only terrible loans now. I'm insufficiently convinced that working folk (white British, black British, and West Indian especially) don't also go around in small groups and drink, or even that they do this less than students. Most of those I know do this very well. Not so much the Muslims of course (nor some stripes of Christian) - that's true. But that's not really their fault.

What a strange thread. Seems people have fallen into the PC trap. Shouldn't we just be trying to attract all people to the Mem regardless of ethnicity or education status? I mean god forbid we could even try to attract more working class white people.

I've thought for years Rovers could make a bigger effort to get people from Easton to attend.A hard job of course, many in Easton/Eastville are quite proud of their Premier team shirt and Sky dish, but that's the challenge. I imagine Wael may have some decent ideas and be open to listen to others.
