Pottering around the website of the National Football Museum, I discovered this painting. I'm no art critic, but - how shall I put it - the style is not to my taste. The caption accompanying the picture is "Oil painting depicting a football match between Manchester United and Bristol Rovers in 1953 at Eastville Stadium".This is a little problematic, as (a) the ground doesn't look like Eastville - look how close the crowd is standing behind the goal, and (b) Rovers didn't play against Manchester United in 1953 (at least not in a competitive match). Perhaps Mr Pearce imagined the scene, never having visited Eastville? The Rovers kit looks pretty accurate for the early 50's, though (compare the colour photo from the 1951 Rovers v Newcastle FA Cup tie on the cover of "Bristol Rovers: The Official Definitive History"). Anyone know anything more about the painting or the painter?

Sorry, I can't help with the painting or the painter. However, Rovers did play a friendly against Mancheter United on 30th January 1954, so maybe the painting refers to this game? I think that we lost 1-0. Both teams had been knocked out of the FA Cup in the third round, so assume this friendly was arranged to fill a gap on FA Cup Fourth Round day! Got a feeling the game was an early appearance by Alfie Biggs, but I'm not sure about that. There is a scan of the cover of the programme half way down the left hand column. bristolroversmemorabilia.weebly.com/1953-1954-4649.html

I believe the original painting was purchased by Geoff Dunford. The 1954 friendly match was played on a snow bound pitch and won 1-0 by United. Rovers gave first team debuts to 17 year olds Alfie Biggs and Norman Sykes.

Grass is a bit green for those days!(unless it was the first match of the season).
