Looks like Forest Green wouldn't take Gos unless we committed to pre season friendly!

Forgetting the Portugal game only one team above us in the structure of the game. I would have liked at least one against a Championship team. I guess either the Taunton or Forest Green game will be with the youth / weak team as I would have thought the Portugal trip would be for more than 2 1/2 days including travelling.

What happened to the days when pre-season friendlies were announced one-by-one, drip feed? It smacks of organisation to me!

Thanks to 1986 gas. I guess that sometimes we all need to take the chance. The players will at least have a proper break this year, just hoping they keep it real my bredren, innit. Is it cos I is black ? Lol

... I've decided to do the Portugal. Life's too short not to take every chance one gets to enjoy.

Just added Corinthinians Casuals away on 31 July, that makes 13 friendlies; some will be reserves, U23 and U21, but that's a fair number of games.

So Hull now added. This will be a decent game if the managers try to win but most of these games are not taken too seriously unless by trialists. I wonder how many subs we will use in any one game. Didn't we have one game last year where the side. gK apart, was changed ?

Is this the first time that Rovers have played Corinthian Casuals ? I know that city played them in the cup once but I don't remember Rovers playing them.. I quite fancy this game and Blyth Spartans away in the cup would be another good one.

Don't know is the answer. The link to the team comes from Steve Hamer who played for them and even managed them for a short time. I like the founding concept of the team: playing only amateurs, never questioning the ref and generally playing to the spirit of the game. Watched them up at Wembley at one of their anniversary celebrations against AFC Wimbledon; it was strange with just one side of the ground used - it was a poor game. Their strip is chocolate and pink.

I will definitely be going to Corinthians. What I hate about football - Manchester United & Mourinho. A global "brand". A bunch of over-paid mercenaries. A manager who is a serial cheat and whose ethos is to win at all costs (though cheating only got them to 6th in the league last year). Cheating. Diving. Intimidating and conning the referee. They are not alone - but they are the worst. What I like about football - the spirit of the game (as summed up by Corinthians) and being a Gashead. I hate it when we cheat. It's rare - but we have had a few divers. Snake was probably the worst offender. I know I'm in a minority, but I'd rather see us lose than cheat our way to a point. It's just not the "Rovers" way. UTG.

Perhaps Hamers amateur days are why he doesn't seem to like agents.

The'Corinthian spirit' is admirable but it is only possible in a truly amateur game, once money comes into it everything changes (sadly).

I had read that somewhere about the pens too: NL ‘Pa’ Jackson – Founder Corinthians FC When penalties were first introduced in 1891, Corinthian C.B.Fry called the new law: “a standing insult to sports men to have to play under a rule which assumes that players intend toe tip, hack and push opponents and to behave like cads of the first kidney”. www.corinthian-casuals.com/the-corinthian-spirit.htmlThanks google! The Corinthians have a link with their name sakes in Brazil and have toured 3 or 4 times, once playing a team containing Socrates and Rivelino with a TV audience of 20M - our team will be mostly U21/23s with the season starting 5 days later.

Rovers played at Corinthians in Nov 1936 beating them 2-0 in the FA Cup. Match played at the Crystal Palace which burnt to the ground just days later. Indeed Steve Hamer was player manager of Casuals in early 1970s.

Support is secondary to the issue for most managers; building up match fitness and getting used to each other are key in these competitive games. DC, I am sure, has a planned build up to the season. Me, I go to look at new signings and regular players, tactics and a trip out. 13 games is a large amount and you are bound to be watching games with many U21s in the teams; naming teams in advance may not help as some supporters may chose not to go if a 'weakened' side is named. It's a tricky one and a quaint aspect of lower leagues. Most of the top teams hardly play any friendlies in the UK before the start of the season and fans have to go to the US, Australia or the Far East etc as these teams build their overseas support and more importantly (to them) shirt sales. Improving the quality and names of opposition teams would improve attendance, but few big teams would come, we would get a Big Team XI, not big names, and more than likely get run ragged which does not help morale.
