“Where - and when - were you at Twerton Park?”
When the FA Cup draw is made, do you hope for a home game, or the chance to travel somewhere? It’s a 50-50 chance, isn’t it? Well, in the FA Cup between 1969-70 and 2015-16, Bristol Rovers have been drawn at home 43 times and away 53 times. The FA’s apparent long-run bias for making Rovers fans travel has applied whether we’ve played exalted opponents from higher divisions, peer-level clubs or plucky underdogs. Bristol Rovers FA Cup History since 1969-70....pdf (23.55 KB) Sometimes, one game in a round is just not enough. Of our 49 victories in the period, Rovers have needed a replay twelve times before knocking out our opponent. Conversely, of the 47 times Rovers’ FA Cup run has come to an end, our adversary has beaten us in a replay fourteen times. Bristol Rovers FA Cup Replays since 1969-70.pdf (24.86 KB) On two occasions, two games in a round proved not enough for Rovers. Perhaps the 1989-90 season was a good one to concentrate on the League, as Reading eliminated us in the first round after a game at Twerton Park, a first replay at Elm Park (eight years before the Madejski was opened) and a second replay back in Bath. And could we have been the springboard to European glory? In 1977, Rovers drew 1-1 away at Forest. The teams could not be separated after extra time in the replay at Eastville in another 1-1 draw. So: off to Villa Park, a neutral venue, for the decider: a 6-0 win for Forest! Next season, they won the first division championship, and the season after that they clinched the European Cup!
